Book!Hinny is trash and their kiss scene easily foreshadows Ginny's treatment as Harry's accessory

I just thought about the Hinny kiss scene so this is another impromptu HP post.

Harry looked around; there was Ginny running toward him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her. After several long moments — or it might have been half an hour — or possibly several sunlit days — they broke apart. The room had gone very quiet. Then several people wolf-whistled and there was an outbreak of nervous giggling. Harry looked over the top of Ginny’s head to see Dean Thomas holding a shattered glass in his hand, and Romilda Vane looking as though she might throw something. Hermione was beaming, but Harry’s eyes sought Ron. At last he found him, still clutching the Cup and wearing an expression appropriate to having been clubbed over the head. For a fraction of a second they looked at each other, then Ron gave a tiny jerk of the head that Harry understood to mean, Well — if you must. The creature in his chest roaring in triumph, he grinned down at Ginny and gestured wordlessly out of the portrait hole. A long walk in the grounds seemed indicated, during which — if they had time — they might discuss the match.

Personal Takeaways from this scene:

Hinny seems mainly to be based on passion/lust. Ginny becomes hot and is dating guys so now Harry is horny for her. Their first kiss embodies this whirlwind passion. It's not in an intimate setting where they can discuss their feelings but in an euphoric moment after a victory - a victory where Ginny beat his ex. There's nothing inherently wrong about getting caught up in the moment but it just contributes to the shallowness of this ship.

There is zero focus on Ginny during or after the kiss. Harry has been pining for several chapters but nope, the first person highlighted after Harry kisses her is Ginny's ex. Harry is very conservative to whom he pays attention so it's not a coincidence that Dean is the first one mentioned here.

Instead of getting Ginny's reaction to all this, Harry seeks out Ron for his approval. Hey Harry, how about checking in the with girl you just kissed in front of a crowd? How does she feel about all this?

Ginny feels like a nonentity - just a conquest. His chest monster roaring in triumph is so repulsive to me. Harry showed up Dean, he has Ron's approval so Harry's won. Harry claimed her.

The last line is just a personal peeve of mine. It just gives me the impression that Harry is the leader of the relationship and Ginny is just meant to follow along. Still no reaction from Ginny. Is she shy, joyful, mischievous, uncertain etc about leaving with Harry? Why would Harry not start the discussion by talking about the match so he can praise Ginny for her performance? Given that her team's victory played a role in their kiss and all.

Sigh, the teen romances in HP are atrocious. The people saying that book Hinny was a great relationship have to be high. I don't like Ginny but JKR really ruined her character. Just like here, in the epilogue, Ginny is just there. Ginny deserved better. Not that I care much about her but it's frustrating to see female characters treated like this and people praising the relationship as amazing.

Saw a post on Reddit, and now I have feelings. Allow me to stand on this here soap box for a minute.

JKR has stated that Fred and George figured out the passphrase for the Maurader's Map by being coached through it by the map itself. This makes me all the more irritated with the line "Never trust anything if you can't tell where it keeps its brain" and I absolutely hate that she made Arthur Weasley say it. It's a moment completely out of character for him, a man who offers soft comfort and encouragement to his children every day. A man who only ever raised his voice once in 7 books when his sons took a prank too far and intentionally caused harm. There's no way he would berate his daughter, who is clearly torn up about what happened, for getting manipulated, especially not as the first words he speaks to her after she was minutes away from death.

Inconsistent world building leads to inconsistent characters. It's literally never addressed that the map is sentient, just like the fucking diary. Nope, we're just told talking diary = evil, and dumb Ginny should have known better; meanwhile, talking map = funny and brilliant piece of magic.

Fred and George fucked around with a parchment that coached them how to reveal enchantments on it and nothing happened to them. How the hell was an 11yo girl supposed to assume her talking diary was nefarious??? She lives in a literal world of magic where letters scream at you and mirrors offer encouragement and grooming tips. Why the fuck *wouldn't* a magical diary offer sympathy and soothing words, friendship and camaraderie??

Angelina eventually marries her late boyfriend's brother?

I'm curious as to how that even happens. What's the thought process behind that for her? What about how George feels about it?

Like- girl ended up with her dead boyfriend minus one ear and half of his livelihood gone...

Don't get me wrong, George definitely deserves a great life and future...

But also, (for George) how do you date your dead brother's girlfriend in the first place?

Idk the only real "solution" is that they helped each other through the grieving process of Fred's death???

Bill Weasley & Fleur Delacour

I can't say I'm well versed in the details of their relationship but... it's definitely interesting.

They definitely have relationship goals moments:

They met by chance: at Gringotts as coworkers

Fought alongside each other during the war

But also...

Bill caught Fleur's eye when she was in the Triwizard Tournament: Fleur was 17 Bill was 24 💀💀

How'd that even happen????

That means that Bill was 18 when Fleur was just starting school at Beauxbatons (which I assume was when she was 11)...

I mean- in hindsight, it's not that bad... but I wish we got more or a build up yk?

Like- Charlie was literally working at the Triwizard Tournament because of the Dragons... how did she not meet him first?

No. They had an amazing setup, but no.

It's like dating your younger sister.

There was also no buildup, chemistry, or reason.

I also thought the saving Ginny from Tom Riddle was supposed to be a nod at the "Handsome Prince saves the Damsel in Distress" trope... yeah no.

Also, Ginny literally disappears and has no relevance/importance to the stories after that, only becoming relevant when she started dating Dean Thomas (which I personally thought was cute) and Harry suddenly realized that he was in love with her all of a sudden. There's no buildup, and they had no chemistry in the supposed romantic scenes...

They honestly just did Ginny dirty....

Nymphadora Tonks & Remus Lupin

Ouch. This made me cry.

Ok I get that the 13 year difference is a bit odd... but to some degree it makes sense:

Remember that Tonks' mother married for love, even if it was out of the norm. Tonks is literally continuing the legacy lol

Lupin and Tonks were both outcasts, they relate to each other and appreciate their uniqueness

Anyway, their sacrifice was brutal but also devastatingly beautiful

I don't understand why people want Press and Abby together. The only thing he has going for him is his body. I personally don't find Press attractive.

What's with people shipping characters they like with characters that are mean to the character they claim to like?

He's said on multiple occasions that she has whale legs. I need people to want better for Abby.

Badass Pansy Parkinson and Draco Malfoy stepping off that train for eighth year not giving a single shit what anyone else thinks about them.

Give me Draco with blue hair because he's been living with Andromeda these past few months and Teddy has blue hair and Draco was so tired of seeing Teddy change it to his stupid blonde hair, so he dyed it blue to match his nephew's. And he's got this massive tattoo over his arm with Narcissa flowers, because even if they haven't had the best relationship, she's still his mother and he loves her. And the rings, all silver, and coming in many different shapes and sizes.

Give me Pansy with a tattoo sleeve that she keeps mostly hidden per McGonagalls request (dress codes exist even at a wizard school). It's pansy flowers painted over the dark mark, covering as much as she can because she likes to remember that shes her own person outside of war. Then it's spiderwebs around her elbow (she was drunk for that one and she still remembers the pain). On her upper arm is Draco, he's the second biggest tattoo because other than her self, she's the most important person in her life. And then a small fire, for Blaise, because he's always been there even when she doesn't want him to be.

Give me them, helping first years find there way, because they wish someone had helped them, but they're also the only people who don't hate them. Give me Draco starting a study group, which includes Luna, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville. Give me Pansy trying out for Quidditch because she needs something to get her mind straight and exercise just happens to work. Give me Draco being to scared to bring up the war because he knows how badly he hurt people, but also give me Pansy not being afraid to bring it up because she knows she did wrong, and hiding from that fact won't make it better.

Abby/Max :(

This thought has been brewing in the back of my mind for a very long time now, and I feel that, as a certified Abby defender, I must say it.

Abby/Max is toxic. Obviously it's not Abby/Press levels of toxic, but I have this theory that the writers originally intended for MANG to be a complete mess (which they are) but for Ginny to eventually completely drop them and never come back, never have that apologetic reunion etc. I reckon it wasn't until they expanded a bit more on Max and Abby (god knows if they'll ever give Norah an actual story arc) that the writers decided they wanted to keep the friend group around. BUT I also believe that you can see little sprinkles of the original idea with MANG in the existing version of the show.

That's the only way I could try to explain those odd scenes. One in particular comes to mind, and is in fact the entire reason I haven't been able to get this out of my head.

Yes that's right, jurors of the court, "Abby, why are you such an ADD nightmare?"

To those that have not spent their time watching "Abby Litman Scene Pack" videos and, god forbid, that "Sad Abby Litman Scene Pack" one, Abby, in quite normal friend fashion, tries to jokingly draw on Max's face and Max delivers the infamous line.

Abby is so visibly hurt and Max just does not give the slightest fck. And then the cut to Ginny who was laughing along before, her smile suddenly dropping at Max's words? Like dam, that hit me a little hard.

There's this dynamic with Max/Abby that gets more frustrating the more I think about it, and I think it's summed up really well in @/rahnesinclair's fic cool cool cool, fun fun fun (really good fic).

Abby is extremely insecure and Max doesn't care, and in fact often abuses that fact. Not on purpose, Max isn't a bad person (not like someone cough cough) but she takes and takes and takes, and simply gives nothing back. It especially bothers me that Max has supposedly been Abby's best friends since they were toddlers, and I worry that this is how their dynamic has always been. And just like in the fic, it completely crushes me that Max apologised only to Ginny and doesn't even think to apologise to Abby. (Abby really does have reason to be insecure in her relationship with Max, and I think it's so telling when you compare the way Ginny treats Abby in comparison)

Abby has convinced herself she needs Max (and, well, maybe in a way she does) so, just like with all the other problems in her life, she shuts up, sits down, and lets Max be the main character in both of their lives.

All that said, I do also believe the writers will resolve this (unless they forgot about it ;-;) and perhaps then I can go back to writing my MaxAbby fic in peace (I SWEAR TO GOD I REALLY WILL UPDATE IT, I HAVE A SCAFFOLD AND EVERYTHING). They have a habit of always hinting and hinting about Abby's upcoming storylines (Oh look, Abby's gone to the bathroom and doesn't want Ginny to come with her, oh look Abby keeps a stack of food with her in the bedroom, oh look Abby's looks a lil sad today, etc. etc.) but supposedly we've been told she will finally get attention from the writers in the third season (I have a whole list of things I want to see next season for Abby and if I don't get them i will riot) and I hope to see Max's "self-growth" extend towards Abby as well, and not just two very select people.
