I've been wanting to rewatch Brokeback Mountain (2004) for the past four years, but a couple of things are holding me back. 1, Seeing Heath Ledger play a well-written character brilliantly may be Too Much for me to handle after watching him in The Patriot for four years. 2. The homophobic violence isn't even the worst thing. The fear of homophobic violence and the destruction wrought on lives by that fear--and not exclusively gay peoples' lives--is. If Jack and Ennis had been together, it's entirely possible that one or more of them would have died for it, but at least they wouldn't have lived in abject misery for most of their adult lives. Brokeback is better than most mainstream queer representation that came before it, but it sure as hell is not happier than what came before.

I shouldn't comment because I said in my post that I was keeping my mouth shut, but I read @waitmyturtles's post and @wen-kexing-apologist commented on mine about Sani x Wat, so let the record state that I am firmly a

NO!

Sani isn't just a teacher but also works in the Student Welfare Office. She is there to assess the needs of students, and someone in her position tends to work with the most vulnerable student populations.

Having positive student-teacher relationships is a must for 1) increasing retention rates (if students like their teachers, they will want to attend class, and if they form a relationship with their teacher, they will also trust them), 2) creating a productive classroom environment (students who like their teachers are more inclined to participate regardless of their grasp of course material), and 3) allowing faculty to form a course that touches on the students' practical needs while meeting objectives.

But showing up to Akk's house for their beach vacation? Going out to drink with them after the film festival for Akk's birthday? Outing her colleague in front of the students she has become friends with?

Even with my glasses, these lines are blurry.

She isn't encouraging Wat, but she also isn't discouraging Wat.

Sani is the youngest of the teachers, which makes her more relatable to the students but she is still a teacher. She is in a position of power regardless of her age. Wat may have graduated, but he just graduated after one of the worst school experiences to happen.

Also, it's interesting that the show offered up several comments from others (and Akk) that Dika, a gay man, was too close to his students and was the reason for their misbehavior, yet Sani is chilling with her students hours away from the school on the beach and all is well. Akk even had the audacity to ask if Dika was Aye's boyfriend because Akk took Aye's behavior as a sign of the similar disruption Dika caused, yet all are okay with Sani.

Different strokes, I know, but it's a hard no from me.

She should help students with the resources and power that her position allows, but there is a line, and she keeps tip-toeing it. Send them a card with some money in it to congratulate them. Help them fill out scholarship applications. Go with them on a college tour, so they don't get overwhelmed. Let them text you to ask questions or to give encouragement.

DON'T GO DRINKING WITH THEM AND STAY TALKING TO THE BOY WHO HAS A CRUSH ON YOU WHEN ALL HIS FRIENDS HAVE LEFT!

To be clear about the Hobie age situation:

I head-canon him as 18-20. I have reasons for why I think that if people are interested. I do not care what you head-canon/see him as. I will never force my own head-canons on another person, nor will I expect someone else to agree with them. The people getting so up in arms about the whole situation ON BOTH SIDES are being WEIRD.

This does mean I do not ship him with Pavitr( chaipunk / punkchai ), Gwen( ghostpunk / HobieGwen ), and Miles( punkflower / HobieMiles ) because two of those characters have in movie confirmed ages of 15 and 16, and then I head-canon Pav to be the same age as Gwen. The age difference is too weird and gross for me because of the way I SEE THEM. That does not mean those ships are proshipping or whatever it’s called. It would be proshipping if you HC Hobie as 20 and he’s dating a 15 year old, but that is CLEARLY not what’s happening here. More power to the people who see Hobie as younger and ship him with the above ships and make amazing works for it! But personally, I love him in the older brother role!

With that said, and I wanna be exponentially clear on this part: it isn’t a micro-aggression to think he’s 19/20, it isn’t deaging/infantilizing to thinks he’s 16/17, and it isn’t homophobic to not ship a ship because you view the character as a different age, making the ship weird for you. What is a micro-aggression or straight up racist are the people(ngl haven’t seen A LOT of this but I’ve still SEEN it) who think Hobie is 26/30+. If that is your view on him maybe examine why you thought that originally and your own biases towards young black men and then reevaluate. What is homophobic, and potentially also racist, is not holding the above talked about ships to the same standards, again not something I’ve really seen but people talk about it like it happens so I’m going to assume it does.

Bottom line: Unless they specifically say(or give just an undeniable hint at it) in the next movie, Hobie’s age should be and is up to interpretation. There is no reason to send hate because of a 5 year variability in a character’s age.
