Since the death of God, there’s been a vacancy open.
You can fill that void.

Sure Groundhog Day is already psychological torture enough but as someone who JUST got out of January I can't imagine being trapped in a time loop AND it's an eternal winter. An eternal February 2nd. That's basically still fucking January

Today is Harold Ramis’ birthday, so I thought of doing Harold Ramis related poll for the occasion.

HELLO! i like tropes and i like time loops so im making a tier list! this tier list isn't a tier list about how good these pieces of fiction are, it's only about how well i feel they execute time loops as a trope!
this was inspired by how i decided to watch groundhog day for the first time today after people recommending it to me because im making a visual novel with time loops in it.
THE ACTUAL REVIEW:
i liked how they used time loops! i think it was very solid. one of my favorite tropes people use with time loops is having there be this guy who sucks, and then trap him in a situation that they originally respond poorly to. And then as they goes through the time loop they have to make mistakes and learn lessons about their environment from having to repeat those same situations over and over again. and then eventually they know how to respond to those situations better!
and i think groundhog day did that trope very well! it was very satisfying to watch phil's character get progressively less sucky. he was still the same guy by the end but he'd just had a lot of time to learn about his environment and how to treat people better.
it didn't do anything "transformative" with the genre or anything but because it was made in the 90's it kinda Didn't Have To becau,se it doing the trope well was enough.
the only reason i didnt give it an S was because the time loop itself wasn't incredibly interesting? i gave it an A because it was very interesting to watch characters interact with it, but otherwise it was just the backdrop to the story because it was a completely character driven story.
if you have any suggestions for things i should read/watch to add to this tier send them my way ^_^

So I watched Groundhog Day for the guest time and it's good. I enjoyed it, but I also felt like it ended too soon.
Phil should be slightly terrified of going into a non-groundhog Day world. By the end I don't think he's become a better person. When he finally creates the perfect day is just him putting on a show of being the perfect guy to get the girl. But is he going to still love her in a week? Will he continue to care about Larry and the citizens of Putatawny? Or will he be tired of them and distressed by not being able to know their every actionv in advance, even if he does remember their history.
Imagine a guy moves to town who suddenly one day completely shifts in personality and has God like knowledge of all the residents of your small town. When he's blowing in and saving lives on day one of makes sense to love him, but if he moves to Putatawny they are eventually going to have questions. Especially because I don't buy that Phil cares about these people, I think he lucked into the 100% run of the day (as indicated by getting the girl) and the next day he is going to laugh at a waiter dropping tables and not stop for the homeless.
Maybe it's because I'm a loveless hag, but speaking as one of those, I found the ending where now the people are in love because he won the challenge and gets pussy now to be uncool and could be like any other indicator of growth as an individual to make, like, a Point with the film. It's a hard standard to hold a movie from that era too, and I want to be clear that I am a hater and Groundhog Day is misogynist trash that you are a bad person for liking, but also there is no media that I Do find to be Above Reproach, so you may as well indulge in a great premise that leaves you asking lots of questions, great acting, gorgeous old world the music very aesthetic nineties.
It will help explain things in pop culture if you haven't seen it yet, and the memes are funnier when you get them on context.

NO YOU DONT EVEN GET IT PHIL CONNORS LIVED HIS WHOLE LIFE IN CONTROL. HE THOUGHT HE HAD SO MUCH POWER BECAUSE HE BASICALLY DECIDED WHAT HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY/WEEK WEATHER-WISE. HE WAS LIKE THE GROUNDHOG PHIL. BUT THEN WHAT HE PREDICTED WAS WRONG AND THERE WAS A BLIZZARD. PHIL WAS FINE BEFORE HIS PREDICTION WAS WRONG. HE LOST THE CONTROL HED ALWAYS HAD.
FUCK I LOVE GROUNDHOG DAY
YES HELLO
and then he starts predicting in a different way he starts predicting people and interactions and relationships but even the literal time-altering event can’t get him a perfect prediction. he learns to stop expecting to be in control, to stop wanting to *know* everything that he can use just to help himself.
wait this ask reminded me of my favorite letterboxd review ever hold on-
