Valley Times Collection via the Los Angeles Public Library, June 5, 1957. Original Caption: Burt Lancaster, who portrays Wyatt Earp in Hal Wallis' Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, became a bonafide town marshal when representatives of Earp, Calif., and Parker, Ariz., in the Calzona county, flew to Hollywood yesterday to get the film star's signature on the affidavit and then pinned the official seven-point badge on him. Representing the Calzona territory was Jim Loder, above, editor of The Pioneer.

On This Day: Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer go to the o.k. corral and kill three men unprovoked. Upon arrest, they claim they did it to help them prepare for roles in a movie they were doing together, only nobody knew what a "movie" was. They were promptly hung.

Wyatt Earp - and the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
What really happened in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and was Wyatt Earp a hero or a villain? TV historian Tony McMahon investigates
Wyatt Earp – stolid, courageous lawman defeating the bad guys in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Or, Wyatt Earp – every bit as criminal as those he killed and furthermore, guilty of shooting unarmed men. Who was the real Wyatt Earp? And why do we still remember the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral – which some believe only lasted thirty seconds and was more a judicial execution than a…

Captain's Log: Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Star Date Unknown: Gunfight at the O.K. Corral!
Tumblr media
The landing party and I have apparently beamed into an Old West replica of Tombstone, Arizona. According to a posted notice, the date is October 26, 1881. It’s the day of the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Spock is the first one to notice that our phasers have been replaced by six-shooters. Are we about to participate in a reenactment of that historic battle?
The Participants
The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a showdown between two groups of men: Sheriff Wyatt Earp, his brothers, and Doc Holliday versus the Clanton Gang. In the deadly shootout, the Clanton gang lost -- and we have been forced into the roles of the gang.
James T. Kirk as Ike Clanton
Mr. Spock as Frank McLaury
Montgomery Scott as Billy Clanton
Leonard McCoy as Tom McLaury
Pavel Chekov as William Claiborne
Causes of the Gunfight
No matter what I do, tensions with the Earps seem to be unavoidable in this alternate reality. I’m sure that the Melkots -- the alien race who brought us here -- are using the gunfight as a way of punishing us, ironically using our own violent history.
Course of the Gunfight
Unable to reason with the Earps, we resolved to leave town, but are prevented by a force field. Despite our best efforts, my crew and I are forced to fight the Earps in a gun battle. It’s a hopeless battle, given our inexperience with the weapons provided us.
At the last moment, however, Spock voices a revelation. Given the contradictions with the physical reality we’ve experienced since arriving, he reasons that we are living an illusion.
The bullets would only kill us if we thought they could. But any doubt would be fatal. Spock conducts a Vulcan mind meld with all of us, to purge any uncertainty.
The Earps arrive, and wait for us to draw. I feign reaching for my gun. They open fire. The wooden fence behind us becomes riddled with bullet holes, but we are unhurt.
Legacy
I have an opportunity to kill Wyatt, but I refrain. This confuses the Melkots, but they are impressed. They invite us to talk about membership in the United Federation of Planets.
End Captain's Log
This tale is depicted in the classic Star Trek episode Spectre of the Gun. It remains one of the most memorable and thought-provoking episodes of Star Trek, exploring the nature of violence and conflict in human history. It is a testament to the importance of seeking peaceful solutions to the challenges we face.

“Burt was wonderful to work with, very generous, very involved,” Dennis Hopper said of a man he felt “protected” him. Hopper observed what he calls a “clash of method acting versus classic film acting” on the set. Jo Van Fleet…insisted that [Kirk] Douglas slap her, hard, before each of their scenes and Douglas, incredulous, asked Lancaster to come watch. When it came time for Lancaster and Hopper to work out the scene in which Earp grabs and slaps Billy in the alley the night before the shootout, Lancaster had a different approach. “Burt made it really easy,” Hopper explained. “It was a very emotional scene, so many elements, with very complicated blocking. Burt was very good at it. He had a sense of that.” Sometimes he was so good at it, he blocked the emotion right out.
Dennis Hopper on working with Burt Lancaster — excerpt from An American Life by Kate Buford, screencaps from Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, 1957.

Boot Hill Graveyard
Tombstone, Arizona
At Boot Hill Graveyard, called such because many of its occupants died with their boots on, more than 250 graves give partial stories of the Tombstone’s lawless past. Used primarily from 1878-1884, the graveyard was originally called the Tombstone Cemetery. Men such as those killed at the OK Corral Gunfight, Marshal Fred White killed by Curly Bill Brocius, an unfortunate soul by the name of George Johnson who was hanged by mistake. Five men hanged for the vicious killings labeled the Bisbee Massacre, gunfighter, Charlie Storms who was killed by Luke Short, and dozens more, ranging from prospectors, to outlaws, lawmen, and prostitutes. Some who were laid to rest here, their names were never known or were only known by a nickname.
Tumblr media
Today it is one of Tombstone’s most popular tourist attractions. Evidently, per a number of legends, it also remains popular with the many dead who lie there. Visitors often report seeing strange lights and hearing unidentifiable noises coming from the old graveyard. Spirits have been spied on numerous occasions, and even more frequently are said to appear in photographs. Billy Clanton, killed in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is said to rise from his grave before walking along the road back to Tombstone.
