“What do you think that Daddy’s gonna say when he hears about your latest escapade?!”
“He’ll say ‘Lemon, take care of it.’”
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’m gonna fight someone. Mainly Alice. But also Brick. Cause they forced their 17 year old daughter into a situation where she had to step up and parent a 2 year old cause no one else was gonna do it and I - it’s just not fair. What Lemon went through was just not fair. 😔

the fact that despite their intense mutual dislike of each other (which lbr isn’t necessarily dislike so much as they hate that they can relate to each other this much) zoe and lemon always find their way to each other when they’re at their lowest moments/heartbroken and comfort each other while also using tough love and denying how much they understand each other..... ugh the flavor!!!!!

Thinking thoughts rn about how Luke and Asch keep having this back and forth about who is necessary and who isn’t/who is more important/who is the one who really matters and like
Every world-changing success they’ve had was only achieved because they worked together

Ex-Machina Review
!!!Spoilers!!!
Nathan Bateman, is a fucking asshole.
I love it.
There’s a lot of “theories” about this movie, but I have my own interpretation.
Narcissism and God complex aside, yeah he has those things, but Caleb is a driving point for how we see him.
I do not think Caleb is a robot or AI.
But he was losing his mind in the end.
Nathan may be an arrogant asshole, but he wasn’t wrong or lying to Caleb about AVA. Like he might have lied about the experiment, but for that to work he would need someone gullible and perhaps with no family, because let’s be honest, if the test worked, Caleb was not going home 😭 (homeboy was going to end up like the people who installed the generator)
Ava had Caleb eating out the palm of her hand. He fell in love her and she just wanted to leave.
Nathan is the only man smart enough (from what the movie tells us) to make this cutting edge AI, but no matter how many prototypes he builds, at some point they are going to feel like they are being held captive if they gain a conscience.
He can’t let that shit out in the world until they chill first and accept that they are an AI and can’t have normal life until xyz.
Either way, the end result of “what next” if they passed his test is going to be fucked up no matter what.
That robot feels like a person and can’t have a or al life and they are obviously going to want one.
So in my opinion, the movie sets up Nathan as a fucked up god figure held captive not by his intellect but also his creation.
He had to baby sit these fucking robots and hope one day they won’t try to escape him or worse (how the movie ended).
He obviously isn’t a god, but asshole rich geniuses tend to be arrogant and self absorbed in some way. Like, yes, you are a super genius and no one can do what you do, but let’s cool it with the God comparisons.
The movie only ended with his death because Ava turned Caleb against him.
I think he knew that was going to be the end result.
“Caleb wanting to help Ava.”
But he didn’t plan on Caleb losing his fucking mind. Because that’s what turned everything to shit.
But now let’s talk visual language, and meta shit.(my favorite🥰)
Domhall Gleason is obviously taller than Oscar Isaac, but this movie put a lot of emphasis on it.
On top of that, Nathan works out a lot.
Caleb is taller and he’s also pretty smart. But he’s also a gullible dumbass. That’s what feeds into the evil narcissist narrative to get us to think Nathan is the “villain” befor the big twist.
But CLeb just keeps feeding into it. He calls him a hod and kept doing stupid shit for Nathan to correct him.
Nathen isn’t suspicious, Caleb was just suspicious of Nathan.
I also think Nathan is the type of man where being smart isn’t enough. Taking, care of his body as well as being smart, makes him more “superior.” It feeds into his god complex as much as his intellect.
He also likes to subvert expectations of super smart scientist.
He’s not some frail absentminded professor in a lab coat.
He’s a weightlifting, dance loving, dude that likes to kick back with a few drinks. He likes to talk the shit and have a good time.
But also he lived alone for many years with an AI robot to fuck from time to time and sometimes dance with.
Good chance his workouts and hikes are for his mental health.
Nathan is an asshole, but he’s not a villain.
At the end of the day he’s making and testing something.
He killed those generator guys, and I think at the end of it all, he was going to kill Caleb too. NDA or not.
He chose a kid with no friends or family for a reason.
He’s making a product that needs getting and manipulated someone for the best results.
He likes to be In control of everything and aware of every possible outcome.
While the lying might have been wrong, it is the best way to test his AI. Like it makes sense not in a crazy way.
I think Nathan is more callous/sinister than evil or cruel.
I think Caleb was buying into Ava so much, and since the movie is from his perspective, it can convince the audience he is a villain of sorts.
Thank you for making it to the end of you did. I hope you enjoy my word vomit of the movie I enjoyed!

regarding that ask about Dismas and candlemaking... didn't RH remove candlemaking from his backstory in DD2 because it wasn't cool enough for their vision of him…?
I'm not sure, I gave up on DD2 for now, frankly (._.)
but if they rewrote his backstory, do you think it means it's a completely different reality from DD1 altogether? items and some story bits disapprove it, but... I dunno anymore, really, what even to make out of it all.
Hi hi! I wouldn’t go and say Red Hook outright erased the candlemaking from Dismas’s backstory– I feel more like they… forgot about it (lol)? Like, they just didn’t show us that part of his past, if that makes sense? Dismas could have still been an apprentice before he got involved in crime! Here, I’ve made a diagram to show what I mean:
Tumblr media
DD2 HWM backstory follows him from prison to the incident, the blue bits are things that never once showed in DD1 backstory (the distance between the dots do not represent time length).
Personally, I feel like the whole rat-eating thing weakens the incident– as in, he accepted this one last job cause he was desperate and hungry, he needed the money, what choice did he even have? It was way more tragic to think of the incident as him being overconfident in his robbery skills after years on the road (“I never miss” and all that). He *could* have been a humble candlemaker instead but nope, he chose the life of crime, he caused the death of an innocent mom and kid out of a hunger for gold and thrill. This Dismas badly needs redemption. DD2 HWM? Not as much.
But yeah, to answer your question about whether DD2 is an entirely different reality from DD1, I do like to believe it’s some sort of branching alternate universe (mostly to cope with the fact I dislike DD2 Dismas) but it’s hard to say as of now, we don’t have the full story out yet. There are some elements in DD2 that seem to point towards a connection to DD1 universe, but the nature of this connection is unclear: is DD2 set directly in the future of DD1 events, facing the aftermath of defeating the HoD (or failing to defeat it)? Is it an alternate timeline where we don’t get stuck in DD1 looped ending, as in, something broke the loop? Or is it something else entirely? We just don’t know, we might never know! I’m sure it will be easier to draw some theories once all the acts are out though.
For now, all we can do is compile the nods towards DD1 lore found in DD2! I haven’t played DD2 in a long time, so I might be missing some, but here are the ones I can remember:
RETURNING NPCS
Just like with some heroes, there are a few familiar NPCs back from the first game! Half of them didn’t seem to change or age much (save for a new sick arm scar), but the Nomad got a silver lock and the Caretaker/Hoarder went totally gray. Maybe this means DD2 is set in a timeline posterior to DD1 events, maybe it means nothing.
Tumblr media
About the Hoarder, the Highwayman is the only one who seems to recognize him somehow. Maybe due to the fact we always start each DD1 save with the Caretaker bringing Dismas and Reynauld to the Hamlet? Is this some sort of memory from another life? When leaving the Hoarder node, the HWM might say this bark: "I swear I've seen him before someplace..."
Tumblr media
To give us more to think about, the Academic (DD2’s narrator) has this to say about him: "His attention is unfocused, as though he is in two places at once."
No idea if this means something or if it’s just a meta nod towards DD1 (probably the latter). It’s curious to me the Hoarder seems to be carrying some heirlooms, he clearly has a bust and a portrait in his pack. Is he clinging to what remains of the Hamlet?
ANCESTOR’S PORTRAIT
Speaking of portraits, there’s actually an Ancestor’s Portrait in DD2! It can be randomly found in the Academic’s Study, it’s named as ‘unsettling portrait’ in the files, and the Academic line about it is so interesting: “A handsome rendering of that devilish degenerate who so eagerly welcomed us to his table.”
Tumblr media
Again, I haven’t been playing DD2 at all (I haven’t even reached the second act boss), so I don’t know much lore wise to say if the Ancestor holds any significance to DD2 events. All I know is that the Academic and the Protégé (the player) held a common interest in the occult, and their studies brought them to many places over the world– apparently the Ancestor’s table was one of them! I wonder what was in for the Ancestor in hosting for those two?
THE SLUICE
The last thing that comes to mind that seems to connect DD2 to DD1 events is the Sluice, an unfinished DD2 region that brings back the Pigmen we typically find in DD1 warrens. One of the enemies is even named Wilbur, just like the Swine Prince’s little minion-- though DD2 Wilbur is way bigger, like a grown up version of it. When choosing to go to the Sluice, the Academic mentions this:
"The swine were first reported by denizens of a small hamlet nestled on the western coast."
Many people take this line as hard evidence that DD2 *is* in the same universe as DD1, but again, it’s so hard to tell. I still like the branching alternate universe better, as in, maybe DD2 is set in a universe where there was no heir to receive the letter. There was no Dismas and Reynauld at the Old Road, there was nobody to fight the corruption on the Estate. Maybe that’s when the Pigmen spilled out of the Warrens, they grew and reproduced unchecked! The NPCs flee from the doomed Hamlet, the darkness spreads and it all eventually leads to DD2 events. Can you even call this the same universe as DD1 if there’s no Heir (player)?
In the event of this being an alternate universe, there’s nothing stopping us from imagining other events happened differently in here as well, such as Dismas’s backstory (all of this just for that lol). But oh well, I guess we’ll find out more once the game launches!

Okay, so I told myself I would try and get Railway done by the last last week of Season 2 since I was still mostly dicking around with my teambuilding and not making anything meta out of stubbornness, and that day is quickly approaching. Originally I was going to be lazy and just use W Corp because Charge is busted, I have Don Telepole, and I will play Meta if it means getting through a bad/annoying series of fights over with faster.
However.
I also want to at least try and be original and do something a little out of pocket, to beat this challenge my way using strategies and units I personally like using or want to use. To that end, before I ultimately cave and just Uptie 4 Warp Don for the mother of all Charge Teams I wanted to give Railway an earnest go the way I'd prefer to. And my inner Hod is acting up this week so I'm going to try and built a (Non-N Corp) bleed team.
Keep in mind I'll be bring all these units to Level 35 over the week and possibly going to Uptie 4 a few of them, namely Ryoshu and maybe Meursault. I wanted to hear the fandom's opinion before I dive into this.
That said, here's the quick summary of this team.
Yi Sang is here for Crows Eye View to buff Don and Meur's clash/coin power with that much needed haste boost.
Don is here for her good clashing numbers and declaring duels.
Heathcliff is actually more on support than a mainstay since I don't feel like dealing with his ammo.
The Zwei IDs are there to tank and Faust fuels her own Fluid Sac.
Outis is an emergency tank/rupture gal.
Ish is here to support Yi Sang's sinking if need be.
Okay, onto the breakdown.
Yi Sang: Yi Sang is going to be the on the active team is probably the most important member of the team. Along with his good clashing and Sinking application for chip damage, Crow Eye View practically required for this team so I can boost Don and Meursault's speed and let them access their extra bits as they hit +7 speed. Sunshower being a good AoE ego also helps.
The Bleed Team: With the understanding that I'm going to be pushing hard with the bleed team characters like Kurokumo Ryoshu, Rhino Meursault, and Hook Hong Lu are a must. I was debating between Tingtang and Hook, but since I have little in terms of bleed potency already I went with Hook Hong Lu. I'm hoping that Hong Lu can put in the work for bleed potency, but I can't be sure sense I only use him in mirror dungeons at the moment. I know Steam Machine's gonna' be a pain with their Bleed-Cap, but that's what Seven Outis, Molar Ish, and Yi Sang are for in case the first round with it feels too tedious. I'm tempted to put Heathcliff on the bleed team, but I'll be saving him for when I really need his Quick Supression since I can not afford to lose an expensive unit like him early on. and I can actually do stuff with his support passive with this team.
The Tanks: From what I've gleamed Zwei Faust and Zwei Gregor sync well with each other, and I'm gonna' need some damage sponges and Aggro because I can NOT afford for ANYTHING of the DPS units to die in this run. Everyone is too vital to go missing save for maybe, ironically, Rabbit Heathcliff. Faust is especially useful since she fuels her own Fluid Sac and the only thing we're really hard pressed on is Envy, but overall have units with good clashing so it shouldn't be too bad.
The Extras: Rabbit Heathcliff is here to get 45 Sanity on the first boss, then spam the shit out of Quick Supression to delete Steam Machine ASAP. Ironically, he'll be the one I'm saving until maybe the third or fourth cycle. I need at least one DPS unit I can switch out at any given time and Heathcliff is too valuable to risk losing early on. This is the same mentality I have for putting one Seven Outis and Molar Ish. Seven Outis is mostly here as an emergency unit with good clashing just in case I either lose a tank near the end or when I feel like I'll really need that spammable base EGO rupture chip damage. Molar Ish is there to help support sinking with Yi Sang along with also having good clashing power. Mostly emergency units at the end of the day.
The Supports: I have no good Rodion or Sinclair IDs, at least for Railway, so I'm gonna' be using base Rodion's passive and if I have the thread to spare I'll Uptie Zwei Sinclair for his surprisingly decent support passive. Heathcliff is ironically on the support team too since he can boost quite a few of my units with this time with his pierce boost, namely Yi Sang and Ryoshu, but Hook Hong Lu might get some usefulness out of this too if I play my cards right (or wrong).
And... that's the team. Any thoughts so far? Anyone I should Uptie 4 first before I dive in? Is this actually going to be possible or am I'm just screwed and should Uptie 4 Warp Don for MAXIMUM CHARGE TEAM to get through this?

Introducing my teams Pt3 - Mono Bow
Tumblr media
disclaimer: I build my teams mostly based of a certain thematic and just for fun, they are not fully “meta” oriented and while I’m sure they can be improved upon I’m generally happy with the compositions.
Ganyu - Burst Support Yelan - Off-field DPS Childe - Main DPS Diona - Support
The fact that this team started bc I ship Chilyu.... Anyway I wanted Childe and Ganyu together and apparently the way to go is permafreeze combo, at the time I was going to add Xingqiu for sub dps and Diona for double cryo and shield/healing but THEN Yelan was announced and I went "haha what if full archer team?" and here we are.
So yep, permafreeze, everyone supports or boosts the ginger and he goes wild on the field as he likes to do, simple. In the case the fatui menace is on cooldown Ganyu can pick up the slack and DPS by herself rather easily.
Rotation goes Ganyu E -> Ganyu Q -> Yelan Q -> Childe E and go wild -> Childe Q -> Diona E -> Diona Q -> Yelan E
Tumblr media
Disco ball Ganyu is still Nuke Ganyu. Her burst lasts so long she's usually ready to go when the first one starts giving 100% uptime on that cryo. Can deploy her flower for some energy or to lure some enemies but doesn't always work that well. //cries in no Amos Bow or Acqua Simulacra Hunter's Path is usually recommended for Melt Ganyu but it's the only 5* I have and it's a crit bow idk, she used to have Viridescent Hunt. One could argue Diona's EM burst buff helps but it's minimal. 2pc Noblesse 2pc Blizzard for that burst and cryo buffs Atk/Cryo/Crit dmg as per usual offensive builds, she just gotta keep that cryo raining down.
Tumblr media
Yelan is insanely amazing, seriously, her burst does so much dmg so quick and she's rather fun and easy to use and build. She's mostly a quick Q swap but her skill is incredibly useful also achieving that freeze when the whole field is raining ice, and easily doing 20k per thread. Favo Warbow for energy reasons, she's easily the team's battery with how fast and easy she procs the passive. 4pc Noblesse to boost her burst and other members. HP/Hydro/Crit as she scales off HP and to proc the bow and get those numbers. I'm quite happy with how much HP these pieces give her omg.
Tumblr media
Ah yes the war criminal. Comes out to absolutely destroy everything on sight charging wildly and attacking violently, we love to see it. There are SO many blue numbers on screen once this guys starts lashing out with that riptide mechanic and the support of Yelan's and Ganyu's burst is insane. Enemies can't attack you if they can't move, and they all fall down quite easily... Sad crit rate but he never crits anyway, we know that. Rust for raw power being his BiS before Polar Star dropped, 4pc HoD for that sweet sweet hydro and atk bonus tailored for him and Atk/Hydro/Crit as per usual DPS builds. C1 gives me a bit more of leeway with his long cooldown but if anything is even alive by the time he's done the girls can pick up quick.
Tumblr media
Let's not kid ourselves, this girl is the backbone of the entire team. Shielding, Healing. Ganyu battery and support. She's got it all. The rest would be dead without her, quite literally. Sac bow for ER and the passive that can allow for an extra shield uptime. 2pc Tenacity 2pc Maidens HP/HP/Healing for those sweet sweet heals. Her burst heals around 7k per tick enough to quickly patch up anyone who needs it (usually childe) while providing a mini version of Ganyu's cryo field that Yelan can use with her threads.
Tumblr media
So much blue at once.
I love this team with a passion, they would be so funny to interact together I have lots of headcanons LOL. The 5* are crowned at least once but hey Diona's C6 sooo they're even. They also all have the dragonspine wings bc matchy matchy. Kinda hope to get them better bows one day (Yelan's and Diona's used to be swapped bc sac bow meant free C1 Yelan) but we'll see we'll see.

12 for the ask game!
12) the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
I don't know which fandom you're interested in, so...
Sonic: Elise is getting more and more love recently and I'm glad :) but the real unpopular characters I like are half of the Deadly Six lmao. Zazz and Zor are pretty funny (Zor is particularly enjoyable in how meta he is), and Zavok in LW was not as bad as people say, I enjoy his dynamic with the others. (he was definitely milked dry, though...)
CV: everyone who isn't Alucard, Soma or Richter lmaoooo. My heart obv belongs to the CoD cast, but I also wish I could see more love for OoE, HoD and specific villains like Walter and Brauner. It's just. They're good characters, they're fun, not all of them are super fleshed out but they all have at least one interesting trait.
AA: Barok in the West :P jokes aside, it feels that the AA fandom loves pretty much every character (save for some very minor witnesses). I want to give a special shout out to Gina, who seems to be the more neglected of GAA's main cast, but I like her a lot and I was genuinely proud of her accomplishments by the end of GAA2 <3
Megaman: Ciel? Ciel fans? Where are you? :( and what about the Four Guardians? Am I the only one who finds Fefnir cute? :(
SU: I find Sugilite a fascinating Fusion and I'm still bitter that she was only used as an example of a "bad" Fusion. Oh, and you know. Rose deserved better :P
Evangelion: Shinji is the most obvious answer, but you know who stole my heart? Toji and Kensuke. They're very good friends to each other, I like that Toji quickly proves himself to be more than Shinji's bully, and Kensuke is just adorable in his nerdiness lol.

tell me about your favourite hart of dixie episode <333333
That would be season 4, episode 7 “The Butterstick Tab”!
Most importantly (to me) it’s the conclusion to Lemon’s series long arc dealing with her mother’s abandonment. We get Lemon telling off her mother and the show makes it very clear that what Alice did is unforgivable and Lemon in no uncertain terms does not have to forgive her. And she doesn’t! And it’s awesome to see as someone with a shitty parent cause a lot of the time the prevailing attitude in media is you must forgive your shitty parent no matter how shitty they were because you can’t make peace otherwise. And Hart of Dixie completely rejects that! And instead, Lemon makes peace by welcoming her half sister Scarlett into her life ❤️
We also get so much other great Breeland stuff. Shelby being welcomed into the family, Magnolia admitting that Lemon was the closest thing she ever had as a mother (which is very sad but we don’t need to get into that rn) - also the way Zoe is practically an honorary Breeland in this episode, Brick’s confidant, Scarlett’s protector, and of course Lemon’s unlikely sounding board…*chef’s kiss*
Oh also the way Lavon promises to wait for Lemon. Swoon.
Second most importantly is George & AB’s first date. I don’t have an essay to write about that, I just think it’s all very sweet and cute and I love them so so much
Also Wade’s plot of learning how to stop flirting is silly and fun but that’s when I like Wade the best! (See also: that very silly plot in s1 when he had to figure out Hangover style what happened to him the night before)
Anyway I love every single part of this episode very very much, it’s a perfect episode and satisfies all of my hart of Dixie tastes so yeah 🫶🏻

contagiousgrace said: I want all of your Hart of Dixie thoughts
I am more than happy to oblige!! =D
I think I’ve just seen Hart of Dixie all the way through once, and I’ve seen the first season at least three times by now, so my strongest opinions are season one adjacent!
First: it must be said, Zoe Hart is a difficult main character.  She’s not extraordinarily endearing, and she’s also not very funny.  Her grasp of social situations and how to be a good friend is about on par with that of a protagonist in a Disney Channel original show. That said, I do really appreciate that she’s a character on an adult tv show who’s not down with casual sex! Her decisions in the heat wave episode, and her arc with Wade in season two (“casual…monogamously”), are really, really refreshing.  As far as I remember, the narrative doesn’t force her to “grow up” by sleeping around and not caring about it, she remains a very uptight, possessive serial-monogamist, looking for the person she’s really meant to be with – and that actually fits with the overall theme!  Zoe is looking for belonging, that’s what the show is about, so if she were able to hook up indiscriminately and not care that she didn’t have a person who was hers it would have run counter to her ultimate arc.  She wants to belong to a place and a person. Hashtag Lover.  Etc.
George and Lemon’s story in season one (excluding the finale) is better than any of their subsequent arcs separate from each other. I just can’t think of anything else like it!  George, choosing to live the small town life with his high school sweetheart, even though he had a taste of something bigger, and even though Zoe is always there, reminding him of all that he’s giving up.  Lemon, desperately afraid that she’s inherited her mother’s weakness and struggling to know what to do about her past infidelity. When she tells Lavon, “You were right to turn me away, the right thing to do was to confide in George, and now that he knows about my mother we’re closer than ever” – I mean!! It’s a story about making a choice, and sticking to it, even when you find yourself tempted by all the other options out there.  It’s about forgiveness!!  It’s about the true meaning of fidelity!!!  It’s about the reality that feelings of love aren’t more real just because they’re new!!!!  I just don’t understand how anybody could watch the second half of season one and not want them to stay together, not because they’re soulmates or anything silly like that, but because it’s such a good story!! I would have been really interested to see them learn how to forgive each other and trust each other again!!  If I had to rewrite it, they would probably postpone their wedding after they get counseling, because two weeks isn’t long enough to get over being cheated on, but George does love Lemon, and so they should have gotten married on/by the season two finale!!  He knows that he loves her in the show, but then he decides to leave her at the altar because he also has feelings for Zoe??  That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.  If you have feelings for two women, when in doubt, remain faithful to the one you’ve been with for fifteen years, because those are the feelings that are based in truth.  (I realize now that I’ve basically been ranting for 300+ words about how George and Lemon could have been @itspileofgoodthings‘s novel.  So.  I’ll just wait for that!!)
Overall, Hart of Dixie has a good dose of HIMYM/Gossip Girl syndrome, where they accidentally land on a really good OTP mid-series that’s better than their planned endgame couple, so that the last season just kind of feels like, “.....really? them?”  George and Lemon are, as I’ve said, great together – and so are Lavon and Annabeth, from what I remember!!  (Even George and Tansy are better than George and Annabeth, who are basically the most egregious case of Pair the Spares I have ever seen.)
George and Lemon are also just more interesting as individual characters when they’re paired with each other.  George needs Lemon’s sharpness, ruthlessness, and occasional spontaneity to balance him out, or else he’s just not remotely interesting – also, his fidelity to Lemon is what makes him a good person and not just a nice one.  And Lemon’s arc with her career would have been more interesting if it wasn’t written as an alternative to marriage.  Season one says, “Lemon is intent on being the perfect wife and southern belle because she wants her mother’s approval”, and then subsequent seasons say, “Lemon isn’t afraid of her mother anymore, so she can be a single careerwoman now.”  But that seems like a shallow solution to me – and kind of turns Lemon into her mother.  I loved that Lemon, in season one, found her identity in charity work and town preservation and tradition!  I didn’t think that made her weak at all!!  I wanted to see her find a way to be both traditional Belle, wife and mother, and learn how to navigate having a job.
I wish Lemon and Zoe had more scenes together. The scene where Zoe tells Lemon she’ll be a good mother is one of the most touching moments in the whole show, and there’s always a few gestures toward friendship per season, but they don’t go anywhere until the very end, and that’s sad.
Lemon and Wade are a friendship for the ages!
I’m not sure what to say about Wade and Zoe except that I enjoy them a lot, and he deserves all the happiness in the world. Favorite moments (that I remember, due to recent rewatching) include: Wade sleeping over because Zoe’s afraid of ghosts!  The absolute bucket o’tropes (with bonus baby goat) which is the season one finale! Their being so bad at secrecy – “is that Wade’s shirt??” “…is it? WADE! I told you to do your own laundry and stop throwing your stuff in with mine!” “yeah I sure…hate her”
tldr: I’m in the weird position of thinking that almost everybody ended up with the wrong person, but that individual arcs were largely upward-swinging.  I prefer this to Gilmore Girls, where everyone ends up with the right person (or the revival implies they will, anyway) but individual arcs swing downward.

So @johermione and @stellaluna33 have been having this really cool discussion about comparing Jess Mariano with Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, and they got into the topic of Loki/e, the Norse god most famously depicted in the MCU. And while I’m not an MCU fan (I’m not anti MCU, but I’m not exactly fond of their depiction of Norse mythology either.... that’s not the point though), I do want to throw in my two cents about comparing Jess to Loke from Norse mythology!
(Quick disclaimer before I start: there is very little written records from the time of exactly what Scandinavians believed in during the Viking age and how they practiced their belief. Like, astoundingly little (oral culture over written yada yada it’s a long story). And the little we do have isn’t 100% reliable either (just look at any historian debating about the validity of Snorre Sturlason’s works... or which gods are actually just aliases of each others and which aren’t) So take everything I say and every interpretation I make with a huge grain of salt... also! I’m writing anything from Norse mythology and poor Snorre’s name in modern Norwegian-ish spelling because I’m lazy :P)
For those who need a refresher, Loke is a god from Norse mythology whose alliances are sort of flimsy. He is of Jotunætt (aka of the Jotuns) but considered to be part of the Æsegods. He can be defined as a trickster god who often gets the other gods in trouble, but also helps them out a lot (except for when he doesn’t). He’s a shapeshifter who can switch species and gender, and has both fathered and mothered various creatures and gods (Sleipnir, Hel, Fenris, the Midgardsorm). He tends to cause the other gods a lot of grief (like when he cut Siv’s hair against her wishes) and even crashes a party once to offend every god he can until Tor threatens him away, but what finally severs his ties to the gods is the death of Balder (long story short he tricks Balder’s blind brother Hod into shooting Balder with an arrow that kills him. When Hel only agrees to let Balder return to Åsgard on the condition that every living being weeps for him, Loke shapeshifts into an old crone and refuses to cry). He flees for a while, is then captured, and in Ragnarok he’s going to lead the army against the gods only to die in combat with Heimdall.
Now one important thing I have to explain that is crucial to understanding both the mythology and this meta about a Gilmore Girls character, is that Norse Mythology doesn’t really operate on black and white morality. The Jotner are not inherently evil, but rather foils to the gods and competition. If the gods represent order the Jotner are chaos. But the two main groups are also tightly connected, both narratively and literally. Several gods, like Loke and possibly Tor (info on Fjorgyn/Jord is scarce), are related to Jotner or at least part Jotun themselves. Frøy, god of autumn, prosperity and fertility, marries a Jotun woman. And many of the male Jotner desire his sister Frøya. It’s also worth noting that the gods and Jotner have different factions within themselves and are also just some of several species. For example, the gods themselves are split at least between the Æsegods and the Vanegods, who actually fight for ages until the Æsegods win, and Vanegods like Frøy, Frøya and Njord are taken into the clan. Basically, all of this needs to be said so that you understand that just because Loke ends up on the side against the gods, doesn’t mean he is pure evil. And the gods aren’t secret villains either. To quote Rachel Bloom: “The situation is a lot more nuanced than that.”
So what does any of this have to do with a 2000s romcom tv character? Not a lot actually. I think it’s fair to say that there’s little point in speculating whether Loke would see himself in Jess Mariano. He’s a literal god, he has other things to deal with, and also I don’t think I have the gall to assume what he would think or feel. But that doesn’t mean Jess wouldn’t see himself in Loke. So hear me out:
When Jess arrives to Stars Hollow, he’s instantly branded as an outsider and a threat. The townies don’t like him, his motivations are constantly questioned, and every f**k up he makes is held over his head like a proof of his deviousness. And hell, why try to be anything else? He’s a crafty kid, and he’s never been one for order anyway. So why not put a chalkboard outline of a dead body outside Taylor’s market? Why not steal the school’s 500 baseballs? Why not rile up that cute girl’s boyfriend just to see how much steam he can get out of those ears?
Now imagine this Jess, teenage dirtbag Jess, coming across an English translation of the Prose Edda or the Poetic Edda. Imagine that boy reading these stories, of gods who fight and love and make stupid bets and dress up as the opposite gender to get their hammer back and are just generally pretty messy and entertaining but also dark and violent. Who would that boy relate to? The thunder god with a loving wife, magical tools and his very own hall? The golden boy son of rulers, described as sweet and kind and fragile and loved and mourned by almost every creature in existence? The symbol of fertility and success, the very essence of desire, a ruler of his own realm and a man of peace?
Or does he relate to the asshole outsider who always gets people into trouble, never gets credit for fixing things, and is kind of creative as f**k?
Jess might not relate to Loke as a diety, but he sure as hell might feel like people have cast him in the role of Loke. And narratively it does check out. Jess did screw up and end up having to patch things up (the car crash, the love triangle, Luke drama). His efforts to improve are initially dismissed or treated like the least he could do, and one day he does the thing that is just a step too far. Obviously not as far as killing another person and refusing to revive them when given the chance, but far enough in this human small town life to destroy his ties to Rory, Luke and Stars Hollow. His existence also has this lingering effect on the narrative that mirrors Loke. As mentioned, Loke parents a lot of creatures, and while some (Sleipnir) serve the gods well, most of them become future enemies in some way. Hel refuses to let Balder go and rules what is considered the ‘crappy’ place for dead people, Fenris is prophesised to kill Odin in Ragnarok (a fate that is sealed when Odin decides to chain down Fenris) and the Midgardsorm is- like, the Midgardsorm. It’s a giant snake swimming around Earth eating anyone who goes over the edge and has to be defeated by Tor in Ragnarok. And again, obviously Jess’ actions don’t have nearly as colossal consequences as this, but he does become this ghost to the season 4 narrative with what he did in season 3 and his current absence. He becomes this unnamed boogeyman who haunts Rory’s romantic narrative and reminds Luke of his failings, and every time he does show up he leaves things even messier than he found them.
But just like the mythology Loke belongs to, Jess’ situations are a lot more nuanced than that. Obviously he’s not the only one causing trouble (two good examples of this in the mythology are the bet in Gylvaginning and the chaining of Fenris); there’s also Dean and Lorelai and Rory and Luke as well as many others. And what’s important to know about Jess is that he’s not a villain, he’s a teenager. A teenager who might not be part Jotne, but does come from a troubled background. Who isn’t a shapeshifter, but is a bit of a modern day trickster anyway. Who might not have intentionally betrayed his friends and murdered a beloved God, but did cut off his loved ones and consciously antagonise several people of a small town. But where Loke would eventually become the leader of the enemy, trapped in a fate written long before it began, Jess got to grow up. Make amends. Live his life. Be an actual human being because that is what he was. Not a myth.

Seeing the Light: Evaluation
What was the project theme and what did you think of it?
The theme of this project was Seeing the Light. I found this project really interesting and I felt it help me learn a lot about working with available light and how we can use this more creatively in our images. It really helped me to understand the importance light plays in photography.
What part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting (preproduction, production or postproduction)?
I really enjoyed the production aspect of this project. I found the challenge of working with available light really fun and interesting. Having to work with light modulators was something I hadn't had much experience of so that was a bit of a learning curve for me, but I really enjoyed the challenge and feel a lot for confident with them now.
What new techniques have you experienced?
Before this project I hod only worked with flags and diffusers, so getting to use reflectors and gobos was a great experience and a useful skill for the future.
What technique would you like to develop further?
I would love to challenge myself to work in worse weather conditions more. I often found my self trying to wait for better light instead of taking advantage of the light that was available to me.
Which photographers did you research throughout this project?
My main influence for this project was Jack Davison, he was unfamiliar to me before the project and his work has quickly become some of my favorite.
How have they influenced your photographs?
Jacks use of light heavily influenced my work in this project and in my own personnel work.
Which technique did you enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed working with the available light, it was an interesting challenge and an are I would like to develop my skills in more.
Reflect on the feedback you have received how has this helped you to develop?
During our crit sessions I got some really good feedback and have been able to use that to adjust my final images, and correct any issues I may have overseen.
What do you feel is the most successful part of your project and why?
For me a feel the most successful part of my project was shoot 2. I feel I nailed the light and colours and the overall final image turned out exactly as I had imagined.
Did you encounter any problems in your project?
I came across many challenges while taking on this project, and each one of these provided a great learning experience for me. The biggest challenge I had was getting models available on the days I needed to shoot.
How did you learn from them and how did they affect your final images?
to overcome this I changed my models and chose to shoot my family instead. This changed the look of the final images and affected the locations I chose to shoot them in.
What SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE: META SKILLS did you use working on this project?
I think I used a lot of self-management during this project. I really needed to push myself and focus on the project. I had to adapt to the challenges I faced in order to get the project completed on time.
What would you do differently given the chance to complete the project again?
If given the chance I would like to shoot in more varied locations, I felt the locations of my last two shoots could have been better and I would loved to have found somewhere better.
