How Do I Continue My Walk When My Dog Plops Down and Won’t Move?
Going out for a walk with our dog is one of the best things we can do with our furry best friend. Whether it is around the neighborhood, in a park, or on a hiking trail, the fresh air and companionship are always just perfect.  Both of us are enjoying the sights and sounds from our unique perspectives while being together.  Life couldn’t get any better.
And then, the proverbial wrench gets tossed in.  We are going along just great and suddenly our furry companion decides to take a seat. We initially don’t think much of it. Maybe, he needed a little break. So, we stop too and continue to enjoy the surroundings for a moment or two. We might chat with a neighbor in their yard or enjoy the mountain view.
Well, that was great. Ready to go. I said, “Ready to go!”.  We then observe that “something is wrong”. Our dog won’t move. He is remaining on the ground and even pulling back on the leash. The more we tug, the more he tugs back.
As Rod Sterling would say, “You’ve entered the twilight zone”; we have just entered the “I’m not moving zone”.   The problem now arises as to “how we get out”. How do we get our dog off his rear end and continue our walk? Pulling doesn’t work and makes it even worse.
After years of searching, I have come across the perfect solution.  Please take a moment to read our dog training blog titled “How Do I Continue My Walk When My Dog Plops Down and Won’t Move”.

How to Tackle Reactivity
Reactivity is a common issue very often caused by a lack of socialization.
This is an important thing to understand, lack of socialization is the reason for most reactive cases, not bad experiences. A dog doesn’t have to be abused to become reactive. Not being around other dogs or people in a positive way within the first 16 weeks can - and most likely will- cause reactivity too. For more info: Dog Training Advice Sydney

Canine behaviour in general: You need to learn how dogs think and behave. Breed: You need to know your breed. What are the qualities that have been passed on for hundreds of years? How Do I Safely Have a Bike Ride in a Neighborhood Filled with Dogs?
When I was a kid, I used to ride my bicycle everywhere. I would ride it to the country mart to get a milk shake or to the hobby store to pick up a new balsa wood glider.  I also rode through the neighborhood to visit all my friends.  The problem I often experienced was that the fastest way to my friends’ homes was right past “that house”.
“That house” was the one where the scary dog lived.  He was always out front and appeared to be waiting for me when I rode past.  Every time I rode past, there he was. Didn’t he have anything better to do?
My problem was that every time I rode past, he would chase me and nip at my heels. No matter how fast I tried to go or how “stealth-like” I tried to be when passing, he was always there.  No matter how fast I went, he could always catch me.  It seemed that the faster I tried to go, the faster he could run.  I finally concluded that this was something I needed to expect when riding my bike to my friends’ homes.
Now that I am older (a lot older), I like to ride my bike through the neighborhood for relaxation and exercise. Once I started to do this, I quickly discovered that my current neighborhood has one of “those houses” with one of “those dogs”.  I needed to find a better solution to ride my bike past that dog than “go really, really fast”.  I knew that didn’t work.
Once I became a dog trainer, I revisited this issue using my knowledge of canine behavior.  I went out, found “those houses” with “those dogs” and put my theories to the test. I found some great solutions. To see what they are, please read our dog training article titled “How Do I Safely Have a Bike Ride in a Neighborhood Filled with Dogs”.

Should Socialization be Part of My Puppy’s Initial Training?
Over the years Robin and I have trained thousands and thousands of puppies.  Most of the time our client will have a list of things they “would like”.  The lists normally include things like pottying outside, walking on a leash, coming when called, not jumping on guests, etc.  The reason that they are almost always on “the list” is because they are the “classic things” people assume would be on the lesson plan of a puppy training or dog training class.
In all honesty, these can be very important things a dog owner would want from their dog.  In other words, they are all “things they want their dog to do”.  What they don’t address is the issue of “How do you want your dog to behave in the world?”. To put this in another way, simply addressing a puppy’s ability to walk, come and not jumping does not address their overall social skills.
Is your puppy afraid to go out in public with you? Does he jump and bark at people in the store? Can you take him to the Veterinarian?  In other words, does he feel safe in the society in which he lives?
The initial answer to that question is “No”.  That negative result is nobody’s fault. It simply means that your puppy hasn’t been “socialized” to understand that everything around him if safe and fun.  This is not a hard task to accomplish. It is simply overlooked by many puppy owners.
The most important thing about “socializing your puppy” is that you should start doing it as soon as he arrives home.  It is a lesson that you will be teaching him twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Robin and I have some great tips on how to properly socialize your puppy and have a great dog.  Please read our puppy training article titled “Should Socialization be Part of My Puppy’s Initial Training”.

I Just Got My First Puppy – What Do I Do Now?
Over the years, the one thing that Robin and I always encounter with “new puppy owners” is their lack of asking “What happens when I bring my puppy home?”.  They love playing with the puppy at the breeder or store as they are considering the purchase.  Their kids are prodding them on with the classic “Oh, I will help taking care of the puppy” universal fib.
Most first-time puppy owners think that all they have to do is to buy all the stuff in the pet store, bring that home with the puppy, and they are “ready to go”.  The question that I always like to ask is “Ready to go for what?”.
Puppies are a blank slate that come home with us with all the potential of being wonderful members of our family.  They also have the potential of being terrors and even dangerous as they get older.  The good news is that, even though they are home with us now, they might have already spent some time with their mommy or siblings.
Their mommy or siblings have already started them on the proper track of socialization and behavior. It is now our turn to continue.  We must provide a contiguous process to assure they will be properly socialized and well behaved.
We do not have to be overbearing taskmasters to assure that our puppy will be great.  We simply have to be proper “puppy parents” and understand how we must guide them to do the right thing.  And, by the way, “the right thing” is what we want them to do.
Robin and I have a great dog training article for all new puppy owners to help them get off on the “right paw” when they bring their new puppy home. Please read our dog training article titled “I Just Got My First Puppy – What Do I Do Now”.

Why is it so Challenging to Train my Puppy?
I am sure that the most universally loved creature on the face of the earth is a puppy.  Just think about it.  Who doesn’t love a puppy?  They are so cute and cuddly.  They are always ready to play and will give you as much love as you are able to take. Having a puppy always makes you happy. When you have a puppy, everyone around you is happy too!
In many respects, what I am telling you is true.  With that said, why the title of this article?  What could ever be challenging when it comes to such a “bundle of joy”?  We all must remember that puppies are simply “baby dogs”.  This makes them cute, but also means that they have a great deal of learning ahead of them.
Among these “learning things” are pottying, good behavior, obedience, socialization, and more.  We think that these should be pretty easy.  They were well behaved when we played with them at the breeder.  We see little children walking around with their puppies. What could be the issue?
If you just asked the last question, you probably aren’t a mother of young children.  They went through the task of teaching us how to potty “on the big boy (or girl) toilet”.  They taught us how to behave when we met people.  They taught us all this and we haven’t even begun to start about reading, writing, and arithmetic.
There is a lot of stuff we need to teach our puppy.  In fact, we need to teach them “everything”. We can do it and have a great puppy and lifelong companion.
Robin and I have some great information that we would like to share with you. Please read our dog training blog titled “Why is it so Challenging to Train my Puppy”.

How Do I Assure My New Puppy Will Become a Great Dog?
All puppies are universally cute and lovable.  Everybody loves puppies and will always take the time to play with them.  And, who could fault anyone for this behavior? Puppies are always willing to join us in our chasing games, tug-of-war challenges, jumping, barking, etc.
Our puppies were “beyond cute” when they were small and young.  Guess what? After a while, our cute and tiny puppies become big, adult dogs. Many of them are still well behaved and a joy to be a part of our family.  Some of our adult dogs just seem to be out of control, never listening to us, jumping, demanding us to play, nipping our pants, and always barking when they aren’t getting their way.
What bad doggies!  How could they have become such little monsters?
Well, let’s rewind our “doggie video tape” (I am showing my age) and review the show from the very beginning.  When we do this, we notice that many of the activities that we were encouraging our puppy to perform when he was young and small are the exact same things that are quite bothersome now that he is older and much, much bigger.
We quickly come to the conclusion that we were the ones that “made our once great puppy a bad adult doggie”. Since the realization of “that is fun” to “that is annoying” can take a long time, we didn’t even know what we were doing.  The problem becomes how do we reverse the process that we actually encouraged in the first place.
Robin and I have a great article that focuses on setting you on the right track from day one.  It is always far easier to establish appropriate behavior than to try and reverse lifelong misbehavior. Please take a look at our dog training article titled “How Do I Assure My New Puppy Will Become a Great Dog”.

What Are Some Important Training Tips for My New Christmas Puppy?
Puppies are always so wonderful, cute, and cuddly.  They are even better when they arrive during the festive and joyful time of Christmas. They appear under the tree and the kids go crazy.  When it comes to “What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received” question, “a puppy” is always either number one or within the top two or three.
The initial happiness that we all experience with our Christmas puppy normally lasts several days. We originally don’t worry too much about their making “little accidents” around the house, their “cute little habit” of ripping up our slippers, or their jumping up on us with their muddy paws. Since all of that is brand new to us and they are “just so darn cute”, we think nothing of it.  We often will observe these activities and exclaim “Oh, isn’t that so cute!”
After a while it stops “being cute” when they are constantly going to the bathroom all over the house. You really liked those slippers your puppy chewed up.  You are getting tired of their jumping and barking.  Now is the time you look for the switch that makes him the perfect puppy you saw at the breeders or pet store.  You quickly conclude that there is no “I will be a perfect puppy switch”.
Now is the time that you come to the realization that your puppy, and probably you, need some training. When you think about it, it just makes sense. You may have never had a puppy before, so how would you know what to do? And, they never come with an owner’s manual like your car.
Although not complete, Robin and I have some great tips to get you off on the right foot when it comes to your puppy’s (and your) training.  Please take a moment and read our training blog titled “What Are Some Important Training Tips for My New Christmas Puppy”.
