A blessed Palm Sunday to all!
Hosanna Filio David! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini!
As we celebrate our Saviour’s kingship, let us not be like those who cried out, “Hosanna!” today, only to cry out on Good Friday, “Crucify Him! We have no king but Caesar.” Rather may we at every moment, with every thought, word, and deed, give all glory, laud, and honor to our God “who hath reigned from the Tree.”

HOSANNA FILIO DAVID

Week 10, Day 5: It's Creepy When Your Name's In It
I’ve always found it kind of creepy when a song uses someone’s name. I don’t know why, it seems natural that a song would be sung directly to someone. Maybe it’s that it removes the song a degree from the universal of you or I, turns it just personal enough it feels more like voyeurism, more like I’m the jerk with my eye to the peephole or the rich bastard in his room full of video streams, than simple listening and relating.
Like Suzanne Vega’s “Luka.” Like “Joey” by Concrete Blonde. Like Europe’s huge 1987 power ballad “Carrie.”
Then there is track 19 on Chant, “Hosanna Filio David.” Sure, the chant is part of the Palm Sunday Mass, I get that, but I can’t shake the sense it is speaking to me specifically, especially given the feelings of missing and isolation this album seems to dredge up in my gut. Hosanna filio David: Praise for the son of David. Which makes it doubly creepy, as it’s not even about me, but about my unborn son! The Once and Future King, or some shit like that.
Sounding self-centered to myself today. Must be my past lives as a warrior coming to the surface. Must be today I’m not feeling up to writing about what I should be writing about, Dad and all, God and all, death and all, the gift that precedes the peace.
