One thing about xmas at my parents that I am still not over is the feeling of walking w A to their basement toy area with toys they have saved but they were ALL my brothers' toys. All trucks and train sets and john deere tractors.

When they moved in 2014 they (especially my mom) were a huge jerk about getting everything out of their house. I didn't even have much bc they had already insisted on getting rid of my "crap" to make room for more hockey equipment. I basically took my AG doll (omg that's another long story) and had to ditch the rest.

Clearly they did have room to move and keep bins and bins of my brothers' stuff. I mean like huge tonka construction trucks, like a dozen of them. At least 6 big metal john deere tractors. Two complete train sets, one electronic and one non electronic. Hotwheels. Like a complete set of approximately 1990-96 Boy Toys.

All my dolls and tea sets and barbies and beanie babies were seen as stupid *at the time I was a child.* So why would they save them? It just hit like a fucking wave again after many years of coping what and who my parents think are important. And then they have the nerve to make little midwestern comments about why we don't spend more time there and bring the grandchild.

Put a band in my ask and I will do: Am I a fan?:

For some brief point in 2014 I was a Beatles fan, now I just live here. They're like water to me.

First Song I Heard By Them?:

I have a distinct memory of hearing Yellow Submarine as a young child and thinking it was by the Beach Boys and then becoming upset when I found out it was by some band called the Beatles, who didn't even have an ocean-themed name.

Favorite Song?:

So hard to pick, but I'm going to say Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey, just because it's so underrated and I never get sick of hearing it no matter how many times I do.

Favorite Album?:

It used to be Revolver for me...now I'm not so sure. I'm going to say Magical Mystery Tour even though it's not considered one of their "canonical" albums

Favorite Music Video?:

The Blue Jay Way sequence in Magical Mystery Tour just because that image of George Harrison sitting on the ground playing the chalk piano is so iconic.

Have any merch?:

I have this really weird old ceramic statue of the Beatles cartoon Beatles sitting on a couch, a yellow submarine hotwheel, some Japanese fan magazines, and a pick from Abbey Road studios.

Seen them Live?:

Yes <-lie (I have seen Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr live, but not together)

Favorite Member?:

I've been a fan of all of them at some point, but right now it's Paul, followed by George. (then Ringo, then Billy Preston, then George Martin, then Josh or whatever his name is)

GamerGate name dropped in article about recent terrorist attack in NZ

“Based on labyrinthine and anonymous comment threads, 8chan was founded by Fredrick Brennan, a user of similar site 4chan, in the fall of 2013. It is now owned by American Jim Watkins, who is said to be based in the Philippines.”

“8chan was spawned by #GamerGate, a long-running episode in which forums were frequently used to “dox” and harass female video game enthusiasts who were pushing back against sexism in their industry.

When sites like 4chan and Reddit belatedly clamped down on such hate-filled forums, Brennan began 8chan as a “free speech friendly 4chan alternative,” the Washington Post reported in 2015. The site became the second-biggest “imageboard” outlet, after 4chan.”

8chan was founded on October 22, 2013. This is correct. GamerGate began in August of 2014. 8chan pre-dates GG by nearly a year. Hotwheels did not create 8chan as a response to 4chan censoring discussion of GG.

GG also had nothing to do with women in gaming

The majority of GG supporters were centrist and left leaning, with right wing supporters being a minority.

“Imageboards are a haven for (terrible things) … and that’s exactly what makes them such wonderful places. I wouldn’t change a thing,” Brennan said at the time.”

Does anyone have a source on that quote? I want to know what “(terrible things)” is replacing there.

“Shitposting” sees posters deliberately send out online content that is sarcastic and trolling in nature, safe in the knowledge that news consumers — who aren’t aware that the joke is on them — will be upset after taking the “humour” literally.”

Thats not what shitposting is. I mean, the sarcasm bit, can be shitposting, but the rest of what was described is literally just trolling. Or what what trolling was before the media learned of trolling and decided trolling was specifically being a racist, sexist asshole on the internet. Or just someone with a different opinion :shrug:

“But the shooter referred to various right-wing figures in his manifesto and not all references appear to have been genuine praise. Evans says the manifesto “is a trap itself, laid for journalists searching for the meaning behind this horrific crime. There is truth in there, and valuable clues to the shooter’s radicalization, but it is buried beneath a great deal of, for lack of a better word, ‘shitposting.’”

Well at least they understand that and aren’t taking everything he said in the thing as gospel.

“The ultimate goal is to derail productive discussion and distract readers,” Evans writes. “The Great Replacement is a clear and brutally obvious example of this technique.”It is misdirection, he says, used to split left and right and maybe even lead them to violence.”

Dude did say he wanted to start a race war if I recall.

Joan Donovan, Director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at Harvard Kennedy’s Shorenstein Center, agreed. She posted to Twitter:

“Journalists must not annotate the NZ murder’s manifesto. The coded language is not worth your time. Moreover, his social media celebrity call-outs don’t mean you need to ask those influencers to speak on this. Those references were strategically placed to create coverage.”
