Vegan Masterpost
Want to make a change for the animals, for the planet and for your fellow humans? Here's how to start: 1. Replace your favorites with plant based ones. Look up vegan recipes + your fav meals. Stop buying animal products and start buying alternatives! That's basically it! You're probably going to start getting exposed to a bunch of new plants and flavors to cook with. Embrace the fun! I'm not going to lie, you will probably crave animal flavors and textures at first. There's nothing wrong with having these cravings, just accept they are normal and will go away. 2. Look up vegan nutrition needs. You will probably need to supplement with B12 (found in fortified foods, such as fortified cereals or nutritional yeast). This is fine. Supplements are a good things! We put iodine in salt, and most carnist cereals and cow's milk are fortified for a reason. Take advantage of modern efficiency and accept that fortified foods and occasional supplementation is normal and healthy. My doctor recommends everyone where i live to take vitamin D daily, due to the lack of sunlight. Getting nutritional needs met in the most efficient and cruelty free way is good, actually. If you have specific needs around allergies or are dealing with an eating disorder, talk to a vegan nutritionist if you can afford it, otherwise consult with the vegan community and do your best.
3. Start using a cronomoter if that feels okay for you mentally. A lot of vegans don't eat enough at first! We need to load up on those delicious carbs and protein rich foods and keep consuming fats. 4. Integrate yourself into the community! Join vegan facebook groups, vegan hobby groups, vegan book clubs, follow the vegan tag. Follow animal sanctuaries on every social media. Seeing animals as animals and not objects is a big step in being vegan and seeing how happy these animals are in fulfilling caring environments is a positive reminder of the difference you're making. The hardest part of being vegan is the reaction from non-vegans. If you feel supported through the vegan community, you're much less likely to feel strong in the face of non-vegan pressure to conform or "cheat". A lot of us are genuinely pretty welcoming, probably because vegans are more likely to be liberal, poor, nonwhite, and lgbt+ than average. 5. Educate yourself! Read through vegan books, watch educational videos about what animals go through, and/or look at the vegan boot-camp. You are not required or expected to put yourself through watching animal violence, but if you have trouble connecting to the animals and think you can deal with it, it can help you realize how horrible and violent their lives and deaths are. I personally have not seen Dominion nor do i plan to, i have no need. The only people who need to be watching that stuff is non-vegans who are dismissive of the suffering animals go through. 6. Prepare yourself for a lot of unprompted excuses and defensiveness around non-vegans! Here's some lists of common "gotchas". You'll have them memorized within the first 3 months because of how often you'll hear them. There's also vegan debaters on youtube if that's your jam. Remember, you can always disengage and say "honoring my personal values is important to me and you should respect that" if you don't know what to say or don't want to argue. NOW FOR THE FUN PART Replace WHAT with WHAT? TEXTURES: make sure to get extra firm tofu! ground beef -> textured vegetable protein steak -> seitan steak recipes shredded chicken -> jackfruit sliced chicken -> soy curls, Tofu Fish textures -> watermelon (seriously) Unagi -> eggplant Bacon -> Tofu or rice paper Popcorn Chicken -> breaded soy curls lunchmeat -> vegan lunchmeat, or make your own with seitan/tofu Tuna or chicken salad -> chickpea salad Fried Chicken -> Fried Oyster Mushrooms or Tofu pulled pork --> Jackfruit Cow's milk -> any non-dairy milk! You can also make your own very easily Butter -> margarine Cheese -> vegan cheese, or make your own! Eggs -> Tofu, or mung bean egg, eggy yolk recipe In Recipes: Replace eggs with flax seeds or yoghurt, aquafaba, silken tofu, applesauce, banana, pumpkin, chia, baking soda & vinegar Flavors! Beefy -> Basically just salt with some umami Chickeny -> kinda salty, kinda herby Bacony -> liquid smoke, salt, and some sweetness Eggy -> use black salt Cheesy -> nooch please! Sweet -> maple, agave
7. If you drink alcohol, check barnivore to make sure your wines and beers weren't processed using fish guts! 8. Don't purchase any new products made from taking from animals. This means looking for cruelty free grooming items, cruelty free textiles, and avoiding animal exploitation like purchasing from breeders or riding horses. Obviously, necessary medication is the exception. 9. Be extra kind to animals in your real life :) They deserve extra love. Learn to put spiders outside and how to deal with "pests" by preventing them. 10. You are now vegan! Welcome! We're happy to have you! :D You will probably stumble a little bit or not know things like how some sugar is processed with charr from animal bones! That's okay, just keep learning and keep your eye on the positives.

a recent ask has me reaching back to my early vegan days, and how i lived (and still live, sometimes) when i was super broke.
Ramen: Top Ramen has a soy sauce flavor that is vegan, and Gefen has a vegan imitation chicken flavor as well as a veggie flavor. get yourself a bag of assorted frozen veggies and use them in your ramen to add nutrition. when you start using a ton of fresh veggies in your cooking though, you can save the trimmings to make broth, and then your ramen really elevates.
Tacos: pinto or black beans, potatoes, onion, bell pepper, tomato, avocado, greens, jackfruit... there are so many options for making vegan tacos. make sure your tortillas and canned refried beans are vegan! watch out for lard. i like making my own refried beans by heating up canned black or pinto beans in a pan with some oil and smashing them with a fork (:
Pancakes: not just the traditional breakfast kind! but those are good too. by adding some flour, salt and other spices to refried black or pinto beans, you can make amazing savory pancakes. i recently made amazing kale pancakes for breakfast! there are some serious possibilities in this category.
Rice: fried rice, curries, buddha bowls, even veggie sushi if your family happens to gift you a little sushi roller for Christmas. rice is a beautifully versatile carb.
Soup: potatoes are my base of choice for soups, and it can really be as simple as potatoes, alt milk and/or veggie broth, and salt and pepper to make a tasty filling soup. i love pairing soup with rice, and adding assorted vegetables, like other roots, onions, and greens to the soup and/or the rice.
creativity and the internet are your besties in hard times. doing dishes sucks but taking care of yourself is worth it <3
i also think it's important to note: if you are poor and vegan, it's totally okay to eat free non-vegan food that would otherwise be wasted! i was working in food service when i was poor, and we were throwing away perfectly good food at the end of the night, so i would instead take it home and eat it myself. if you're not giving any money or press or whatever to the animal products industry, it's all good (:

So in love with the "Canival Town Vaggie" AU, but that lead to a thought. In Alastor's first song he puts Vaggie in a certain outfit that people have noticed shows up later. This time, Vaggie would recognize "You dressed me up as Susan!?"
what with Alastor kinda being Vaggie's live-in Susan, she might take it as a compli-
WAIT
WHAT IF SUSAN WAS LIKE VAGGIE'S GRUMPY BITCH CANIBAL GRANDMA?? WHAT IF THE ONLY PERSON SUSAN DIDN'T HECKLE WAS VAGGIE????
like- like vaggie, in the hotel in canon SHE'S the one getting pissed and frustrated and and and the one being realistic (pessimistic???) about stuff, STRICT, judgmental (to anyone not charlie) like imagine her meeting Susan like "Wow. mean granny says it like it is" and Susan latching onto her "I'VE ONLY HAD THIS SNARKY JADED GRANDDAUGHTER FOR /FIVE MINUTES/, AND IF ANYONE LOOKS AT HER WEIRD, IM EATING THEM AND THEN EVRYONE ELSE IN CANNIBAL TOWN"
can you imagine mom/aunt Rosie struggling valiantly to be supportive and have Vaggie's evil granny over for tea steeped in the skull of earl Grey, CAN YOU IMAGINE CHARLIE TRYING SO HARD TO BE NICE TO HER GIRLFRIEND'S GRANGRAN BUT ONLY EARNING SUSAN'S RESPECT WHEN SHE CRACKS AND CALLS HER A BITCH
(and Vaggie grinning and CHEERING HER for it???)AND THEN SUSAN IS GIRNNING TOO, LEANING OVER TO HER GRANDAUGHTER AND GROWLING
"oh i see why you like her now~" - "that's not why, granny chops, but yeah. she's great"
WHILE CHARLIE SITs THERE, TRYING NOT TO REACH OVER AND THROTTLE THIS OLD LADY THAT HER GF CLEARLY LOVES
even in hell no one can figure out how this (healthy?) (happily fucked up??) granddaughter / grandmother relationship works!!!! they just know they'll find Vaggie and Susan standing in a corner of the party, smirking / grinning with too many teeth together as they trade sick burns about everyone else there! (especially Alastor) (and excepting Charlie once Susan decides she might almost be worthy of dating her sad emotionally burnt dropout angel vegetation grandchild)
the non-cannibal vegetation diet thing is ONLY part of Vaggie that Susan ever picks on, and it's only because she's WORRIED Vaggie will fall off the flesh is she doesn't eat human three times daily in the special way Granny kills it~

I fucking hate the veganism fights like all fights online have no nuance and are in super bad faith but man the veganism one is just... something else
I've never heard any vegans be like 'yeah I don't care about agricultural workers lol' and I've never heard anyone who thinks that animal products can be consumed ethically be like 'ha ha factory farm/slaughterhouse/meat packing plant employees can go die actually!'
I think. People who feel strongly about what we are eating in general do care about Pretty Much Everything
I'm friends with some vegans vegetarians and they're friends with me and like... it's. Fine. And not in a 'we Don't Talk About It' way at all!!!! In a like 'we can talk about food systems and what we would ideally like to be able to do within them'
I'm someone who tried to be vegetarian once and had to stop for health reasons. I'd love to be able to only eat animal products from small local farms who i trust to treat all their animals ethically but for health and money reasons can't rn. None of my friends who eat differently than me are mean about that? I don't know comma man it's just. I think we all care a lot about everything actually. Which is why everyone's so fucking mad lmao
This is a pointless post which is why no one can reblog it 🥲 I just feel like omfg the veganism fight has the BIGGEST STRAWMEN IN THE WORLD its like ... straw mechas
Actually that's a really good mental image. Strawmechas. Bad ass

we need to have meaningful discussions about food and where we get it from and insulting each other isn't going to do anything at all like stop pretending all vegans are stupid or misguided or don't care about the people and stop pretending that all people who eat meat are dumb or heartless or don't understand impact. like it isn't a dichotomy. the most 'ethical' way to eat will depend massively on who you are and what you do and where you live. someone who lives rurally and gets all of their food within a 10 mile radius and knows most of the people who grew it or farmed it is going to have a different impact on the world and opinion on ethics than someone who lives in a city and cannot buy local because it does not exist. i cant be bothered to make the case properly but the meat industry IS unethical. consuming food that has travelled thousands of miles harvested from slave labour is ALSO unethical. like we should not be arguing over whose side is the most unethical - and everyone just wants to believe their way is the right way and feel better about themselves - we need to be discussing how to improve how we all access food. we need repurposing of land (which yes means everyone needs to be eating less meat) we need to change the way we eat in terms of demand and eating in season we need tighter regulations on animal welfare and how they're kept and how products like eggs and milk are taken we need sustainable sources we need local sources we need spaces to actually grow local for people who do not have gardens or space to do so at home. but how r we gonna go anywhere with it when everyone hates each other
