A Deathly Hallows Missing Moment

"Sit."

Ginny stood, gaze focused on the beady eyed murderer sitting in front of her. The sword of Gryffindor lay on the desk between them. Luna and Neville long gone after the Carrows escorted them back to their dormitories. Snape held her gaze.

It unnerved her.

"Where is he?" He asked, voice firm.

"I don't know what you are talking about."

Snape forcefully stood, nearly knocking his chair over. "What else would you possibly need the Sword of Gryffindor for besides giving it to Potter?"

"I fancied myself a new letter opener," Ginny acerbically replied, crossing her arms, raising her eyebrow at her Headmaster. Daring him to do something. Anything. Make him slip and say something revealing she could leak back to the Order. Curse her so she could feel something besides lethargy. Take her away to wherever they kept their hostages so she could be involved in the action instead of being held hostage at a school that pretends there is not a war going on.

A look of frustration crossed Snape's features for a second before disappearing.

Suddenly, she felt herself forced back into her own mind.

Memories of hard hands and soft smiles drew her in. Dark broom closets and bright green eyes. Sunlit days and starry nights. Flying on a shared broomstick and falling in love. Harry was everywhere in her brain, forever immortalised in her memories.

Memories that did not belong only to her anymore.

Ginny mentally stumbled back to reality. Snape still in front of her, and Harry long gone.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Miss Weasley. A game I thought you already learned the lesson of during your first year," Snape sneered.

Snape picked up the Sword of Gryffindor, staring at his face in the reflection.

"Play smarter, or quit while you're behind. You're dismissed."

To Harry’s surprise, a solid third of sixth seventh year Slytherins stayed seated after McGonagall’s announcement.

“Aren’t you going to... you know, leave?” he addressed the remaining students.

A sixth year Slytherin rolled her eyes. “Nah,” she said simply, stumping Harry into silence.

“You know that if you stay, you’ll be forced to fight your families?” Hermione pushed carefully.

The Slytherin girl snorted. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to punch Great Auntie Gemima,” she said, running her fingers through her short spiky hair.

“Literally the only reason I came back to Hogwarts this year was because I was hoping you’d come here and give me a legitimate excuse to fistfight my cousins,” added a second Slytherin with a savage smile that sent shivers down Harry’s spine.

“If you want me gone, Potter, you’ll have to physically force me out,” added a third Slytherin, giving Harry a warning look. “I’ve been waiting for this for years.”

Nothing about being the Chosen One had prepared Harry for this. With most of the population blinded and man-eating plants running amok, he can only stay close to his friends as they make their way to safety. Not that he’d call Malfoy a friend, but the end of the world does rather make their ongoing feud seem trivial. And it just figures that it took nothing short of an apocalypse to make Malfoy seem like less of a git.

Rec: Hogwarts Houses Divided (Gen-Teddy Lupin) 197K by @inverarity-the-writer

This is an old fic from 2007, that @inverarity-the-writer, has just recently posted to AO3. It's been backdated to 2007, which I think limited its readership so far. Many HP Gen readers know the author from the Alexandra Quick Series (1.15M) a story about an American OC in the Wizarding World that started in 2007 and updates every 3-4 years. The latest update Part 6 just came a few days ago. The series has a niche but very loyal following. But I want to talk about this Teddy Lupin fic! Summary: The war is over, and all is well, they say, but the wounds remain unhealed. Bitterness divides the Houses of Hogwarts. Can the first children born since the war's end begin a new era, or will the enmities of their parents be their permanent legacy? Comments: This fic has all of the charm of a fic written right after the release of HPDH. Not all of the additional canon info was known but a little was. It's unlike most nextgen fics I've read, it takes place when Teddy Lupin begins Hogwarts. He becomes fast friends with three other characters that are in the same Hogwarts Express Compartment as he is. Dewey Diggory (Cedric's brother born after his death), Kai Chang (Cho Chang's half brother), and my fav, Violet Parkinson (daughter of Pansy and Draco, though they never married and Pansy is still off the rails. FYI She was pregnant during the last Battle.)

All is not well at Hogwarts. Bitterness over the war and which sides the kids' parents were still spills over to the kids. It's ugly and worse than it's ever been. The Headmistress and Staff try to get a handle on it, but Teddy views it as not being fair at all. He's got strong characteristics of both his parents and a heavy influence from his godfather Harry. The plot, which is strong, begins with a mystery of wands being stolen from students. The direction it goes is surprising and the D.A. is reformed. You'll cheer for Teddy and his friends, and your heart will break for a few others. The Marauder's Map makes a strong appearance, and the moments where Harry, the Weasleys, Cho, Pansy and Draco pop-in are terrific.

So, if you're up for some strong nostalgia, and a first year adventure story, this will entertain you from start to finish.

Just a side note: This maybe the first fic I've read where Professor Binns plays an important role.

Listening to HPDH randomly, got to the part at the wedding when Viktor Krum shows up, and really, I think his connection with Hermione was underrated. I mean, he shows up three years after they dated, he's a famous Quidditch player, and he's still carrying a torch for her. And she's still clearly at least a little into him. Tbh I kinda wish they ended up together. He liked her when no one else noticed her. He saw how incredible she was.

I think I may ship them a little.

I just read again Malfoy's Manor chapter of Deathly Hallows, more precisely the dialog between Grindelwald and Voldemort

And it's so bloody hilarious, Grindelwald uses the exact words employed by Dumbledore, when he says "you still don't understand" etc

Grindelwald is facing the current hugest threat of the Wizarding World and is so contemptuous and sassy and arrogant - as was Dumbledore - and has no limits, and it's a true delight to read

And Voldemort is just like : >:(, please dude

i have a LOT of spare time on my hands so i’ve been reading a lot of fanfiction recently (like, a lot, don’t ask). i’ve read several fics recently that i honestly didn’t expect to like that much but i ended up *loving*. SO i wanted to ask, do you have 5 (or whatever) fics that you enjoyed more than you expected to?

(p.s. thanks so much for running this blog. it’s one of the first tumblrs i found when i got back into fandom and all your opinions and recs have taken me to some wonderful places 💜)

Hello friend, welcome to my ask box haha and thank you for this amazing ask! I’m happy to know you’ve been enjoying the blog and recs 💗 I love this ask btw, it’s a great feeling to fall unexpectedly and utterly in love with a story you didn’t think you’d be too invested in. This happened with one of my all-time faves, Far From the Tree by aideomai, and with other long fics or stories exploring themes that aren’t on my priority list or aren’t my usual jam. I listed 5 of those happy surprises below (tried to focus on fics I don’t see being recced often) and am very curious to know which ones surprised you in that way. I know you said you’ve been reading A LOT and I shouldn’t ask, but maybe just a lil teaser with five faves?? 👀

1. Timecode by Rasborealis (M, 73k) - my rec

Harry Potter has been dead for two years, and Draco would laugh in the face of anyone claiming differently. Well, anyone but Hermione Granger.

2. Super Rich Kids by @thusspoketrish (E, 81k) - my rec

Draco Malfoy has become disillusioned by the glitz and glamour of the scandalous lives of the Post-Second Wizarding War Pureblood Elite. Enter: one existential crisis, one group of thieving cynical friends, and several terrible, terrible decisions.

3. He Comes Like a Thunderstorm by @korlaena (E, 140k)

Draco is doing his best to balance the life he wants to live and the life he’s forced to live. Hi! Welcome to my first day of fandom blogging! I'm very excited about doing this and hope you'll join in on the conversation and really hope that you might start one of your own!!! So on that note, lets get going.

What I'm reading:

I'm currently re-reading The Changeling by @annerbhp. It's a canon rewrite of sort, with a big twist. Here's the summary: Ginny is sorted into Slytherin. It takes her seven years to figure out why. It's 182K from Ginny's POV. It does follow canon to a point. I read this about 6 months ago and I still think about it when writing Drarry. I now have to give Ginny a positive break-up with Harry. LOL No dissing her because she's such a badass in this story. While it's listed as Harry/Ginny, it really is mostly a Ginny story for the main story. There's follow on stories after this one that are fab too.

It starts with Year 1 and the house sorting. Ginny is surprisingly sorted into Slytherin. She at first thinks its a joke done by her twin brothers, but then reality sets in. Most of her family is devastated and she feels completely isolated. This is a Ginny you'll recognize from canon and then so much more. If you longed for more Slytherin background and lore than canon gave us, this you will love. And if you think Slytherin is dominated by the males...well this will give you a headcanon that you won't forget.

What I'm writing:

The Azkaban Letters, which I'm so far behind on I want to cry. It's a 2007 WIP I started right before HPDH came out. So it's canon divergent after HBP. I did edit the first 7 to be more in line with canon and post canon. My issue is I have too much in my head and too many ideas to get down on paper...er on the computer. When I stopped writing it in 2007, I had posted the first 7 chapters on The Hex Files. It came over to AO3 during the transfer and has been staring at me in the face since then. I'm now up to 16 chapters, which sounds like a lot, but there's 4 sections to the story and I'm in the middle of section 2. sigh.

3. HDMpreg2023 has posted the reveals on A03. TWENTY fics in all. I only got to read about 1/3 of them, but whoa there are some serious gems. (If I find the Tumblr post for this, I'll add it.)

4. @lcdrarry has also posted their reveals! My apologies to the fest and authors/artists. I've only read a few this round but plan on diving into the treasure trove of Drarry. This was a new fest for me to watch when I came back to fandom. While I don't watch many movies or watch tv much anymore, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to follow/understand the stories as well as I should. I was wrong. Most I have found I could enjoy without knowing the source.

I'm guessing most of you follow @drarryspecificrecsdaily, but in case not, you should definitely follow! They post Drarry completed fics which have been posted on AO3 for the current day. I have found some amazing gems from this resource. Fics I haven't seen discussed or recced anywhere else and authors I haven't been blessed reading before.
