Would anyone on here be interested in my HTTYD the nine realms AU/rewrite where it doesn’t take place in the modern day anymore but instead the kids (plus maybe a few other- big maybe!) are just the next generation/children to the original dragon riders + plus some the RTTE tv show characters? Nothing too serious but something fun to talk and think about lol, just wanna see if anyone would be interested in that before I do anything with it just yet so yah
Here's the first of my human redesigns for The Nine Realms. In the actual show, I absolutely hate this character, and I know I don't throw that word around lightly.
Her character writing is just atrocious, she's supposed to be the secondary protagonist other than Tom, but she is consistently extremely selfish and unlikable, and rarely ever actually apologizes or learns from her mistakes. There are aspects of her writing that feel kind of racist, like they have her believe very strongly in spiritualism/mysticism, but she also believes in cryptids which makes it hard to take her real spiritual beliefs seriously.
So for mine, I ditched that aspect and leaned fully into her being a nerd for ancient history and mythology, mainly because she idolizes her estranged father who is a famous archaeologist. Her admiration for her father leads to her having a lot of issues with her mother, whom she mainly lives with. (Eugene lives mainly with their dad and his situation is pretty much the reverse of hers.) When Tom lets her in on the secret about the existence of dragons, she is enthusiastic. In her eyes, it opens up the possibility that the myths and legends she's read about are based in reality, and it gives her an outlet to escape from being stuck at Project Icarus with her mom.
(Also she's not having a romance with Tom because I hate the childhood friends trope in romance. So they're just friends. Sorry guys, I just prefer Tomalex.)
Also, I really hated her original design, it felt like someone just threw up purple all over her outfit, like every piece of clothing she wears is purple?! And her eyes were purple too?! No other human character in the entire franchise had an unnatural eye color like that. So for my redesign, I mainly took inspiration from her concept designs, which were a million times better than what we actually got. I also wanted to use some tiny inspiration from the dark academia fashion aesthetic, since I think it fits well with my version of her.
The fact that there are people out there who think the only reason Thunder can exist is through inbreeding is odd. Did you not think it through? Toothless and Toothpaste had three Nightlights, Ruffrunner, Pouncer, and Dart. All three with varying degrees of eye and scale coloration. Even if they all found their own lightfury mate, the black coloration would still be a dominant trait because science, genetics specifically. The black coloration would be a dominant trait that Toothless would have passed down and Toothpastes white coloration being the recessive color. While you can see that yes, they can have a mainly white coloration like Pouncer does, there will always be a bit of black. Thunder is not inbred. He is just a descendant of Toothless. Stop yourself. It's like you didn't do a punnet square in school
SOMEBODY TELL ME WHY WE'RE BEING ASKED TO BELIEVE THAT THE SKRILL, RAZORWHIP, GRONCKLE, MONSTROUS NIGHTMARE, FIREWORM, AND HOBGOBBLER (?) HAVEN'T EVOLVED IN THIS NEW ENVIRONMENT AND SURROUNDED BY HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT SPECIES THEY DON'T NORMALLY INTERACT WITH HAVEN'T EVOLVED OVER 1300 YEARS
the one good thing to come out out of NR is this image of the skrill sleeping that i can use for reference when i eventually get around to drawing viggo sleeping under beast's wing
Something I think would have been a really good move on the nine realms' part? Not having the main character ride a night light. And not just because of the descendents of Toothless/Hiccup thing (though yes, that also should've been ditched imo), but just because that makes it feel even MORE like a httyd knock off. The possibilities were endless!
Maybe a more aggressive, difficult to train species? A dragon eater? Something that made the protagonist actually WORK to bond with it through mutual respect and tenacity? A Hookfang-esque temperament, where rider and dragon were largely at odds? Hiccup was the first of his team to ride a dragon; what if this new protagonist was the last, spending that first half of the season or so slowly working their way towards an earned first flight while their friends all got their dragons ahead of them?
What if the protag had a smaller dragon, akin to book Toothless? Something he could hardly ride? Maybe he has to wear his dragon like a wingmaiden would, (or treat it like a really cursed flying skateboard) to actually fly?
So many dynamics, abilities, and designs were at their fingertips!!! Why couldn't they use them!!!
Project ICARIS is a GIANT crater where the middle keeps going down and down and for some reason it’s causing the area around the crater to become a winter wasteland. Their currently working to figure out WHY that’s happening, They bring their children with them and skipping some stuff we find Alex and Tom walking to one of the igloos and getting attacked by a dragon, then thunder( or Zeus as I call him) coming and attacking the other dragon! Thus their first introduction to dragons, terrifying.
