I have words with the 4th season of Dragons: The Nine Realms

Once upon a time, we had How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. It was the third installment of the HTTYD movie franchise, which by that time had already branched out to comicbooks, videogames even, and TV series.

At the end of HTTYD3 (let’s call it like this from now on because I aint typing all that every single time), Hiccup, our daring and gangly protagonist, parted ways with Toothless, the wrongly named Night Fury, so he, and all the other dragons could take refuge in the hidden world, safe from any human attack.

That was, at the time the ending to the franchise. The final scene of a last flight with Toothless and his progeny had an adult Hiccup and Astrid, as well as their children, was the melancolic send off.

(Yes I am aware of that Chirstmas special short, but it’s just there as a bonus and has basically no weight on the overall plot. Also I’m pretty sure it chronologically happens before the last scene.)

Then Dragons: The Nine Realms came along. A show set in modern times, taking off 1000 years later, and sequel to both Race To The Edge, the last TV series the HTTYD franchise had, and HTTYD3.

The Nine Realms, unfortunately, cannot hold candle to RttE, which by many (or at the very least me), is considered the height of the HTTYD franchise. It has subpar animation and mediocre writing, had it not been for the IP it was attached, it probably wouldn’t have taken flight. One of the things this show likes to do once per season, is totease the connection between our protagonists, Tom and Thunder, and their ancestors Hiccup and Toothless. On S1 we have the lightning mark Thunder makes on the wall, on S2 we have arrow tip, and at the end of S3 we have the mistrerious cylinder, all with the same dragon crest.

The we have S4 who blow it out of the park, by revealing that, at some point Hiccup had decended into the Hidden World, strongly impled to also have gone there with his family, and lived an unespecified amount of time in the realm where the Night Lights had eventually settled.

This is where the problems start.

Personally, I’m not a fan of HTTYD3′s ending, it’s contradictory to the franchises themes up until that point, and the movie itself does a very poor job of arguing why the dragons have to go away, and why Berk cannot follow where they go. But it was still, it was a conclusion. Hiccup’s story, and the story of the dragons, had concluded. There was nothing more to be told, and the only thing we could do was wait until history became legend, and legend became myth.

But now, turns out that wasn’t the ending of Hiccup’s story with the dragons. There was more. A story we don’t know yet, and that I assume we’ll be told in the future season of The Nine Realms.

So what kind of problems does this bring?

For one, it absolutelly kills any sort of emotional depth the last scenes of HTTYD3 has. The final goodbye between Hiccup and Toothless? What’s the point if he’ll go down there and meet him again a decade later? And Hiccup and his family lived some time in there. That means that to an extent, Berk could’ve gone and lived in there. Their coexistence with the dragons could’ve been possible, so the separation at the end of HTTY3 wouldn’t have been necessary to begin with.

Furthermore, Hiccup was the chief. Astrid was most likely the second in comand, and their children were on the line of succession. So if all of them went down the hole, who was left in charge? Snotlout? Fishlegs? Eret, son of Eret? Valka??? (was she even alive by then?) And that’s not to say that any of these characters wouldn’t have been able to lead New Berk, perhaps not as good as Hiccup, but they were not incompetent. The problem is how negligent is of Hiccup to just, go up and leave. He basically fored everyone and everything to move out to that new location, and now he just goes up and leaves.

Another problem, thought I will admit this is more personal, it the fact that it was just Hiccup (and his family) that got to go to the Hidden World and potentially reunite with his dragon. Why wouldn’t Snoutlout and Fishlegs deserve the same chance? Is not their relationship with Hookfang and Meatlug not as meaningful to them as Toothless was to Hiccup? The twins and Barf and Belch, whil not as develope did too have a meaningful relationship too. Valka and Cloudjumper have spent more time together than any other character, what about their relationship?

I know that to an extent HTTYD is the Hiccup and Toothless show, but the way sometimes the other riders and dragons relationships seem to be dismised is annoying.

I’m sure that the writter kind of expected us to excited at the prospect that Hiccup when there and explored more dragons. But when you sold HTTY3 like you did, when the ending of that movie marked the end of his story. You cannot just, undo it for convenience. You are going against what your own franchise has set up, how am I supposed to be impressed by anything you write if you deliverately go against the stablished canon so flippantly?

I want to get better at drawing Alex, she is my favorite out of everyone. I didn’t know how to draw braids and glasses very well so she is a challenge for me to draw, but I will accept this challenge because she is such a great character.

my friend used that vocab word Alex says. (it was during DnD) It sounded smart.

Dragons: The Nine Realms AU - Character and Dragon - Development and Designs

As most of may be aware from my previous Nine Realms post, most of the designs on the characters and the dragons just rub me the wrong way.

So here’s how I would have preferred them to look like, starting with: Jun Wong.

1. Jun Wong

In complete honesty, I really relate to Jun. I to am a mythology and history nerd and do have a tendency to make it my entire personality trait much to the annoyance of others (sorry sis). So yes, while I find her annoying and cringy, I don’t completely hate her. But why? Why are her eyes purple? She just looks so weird and it just doesn’t help her case with her whimsical aesthetic.

So I would have preferred for her to look like her concept art.

She just looks so cool here and I can’t for the life of me understand why they went for what we’ve got. But in full honesty, she’s not even the craziest design we got here.

Ooo boy.

2. Wu Wei the Mist Twister

While I can sorta understand what they are going for here in terms of diversity, I think what we’ve got was just trying far too hard and doesn’t look like it fits in the franchise at all. Like, I wouldn’t hate the design this much if this was a show specifically about Asian dragons and Chinese culture, but as it stands this is a show about Norse dragons and Viking culture and the fact alone that the only Asian looking dragon is being rode on by the only Asian character still rubs me the wrong way. So, again, I would prefer they kept the concept idea for the Mist Twister.

Like, LOOK AT THIS! It’s PERFECT! Not only does it actually look like it belongs in the franchise as a HTTYD dragon, but it fits the diversity. You have the Yin and Yang aesthetic and they almost but not completely resemble a Zippleback. And we don’t have that weird of a color blend here (like why did blue and red blend into gold and not purple, you know, like Jun’s MAIN COLOR PALLETE!)

Anyway, that’s just how I feel. Now onto “Thunder”.

3. Thunder the Night Light

This dragon designs presents even more problems because it just doesn’t make sense. For all the die hard fans, we all know that Toothless is supposedly (I’m still calling bullshit on that, Grimmel!!!) the last Night Fury in the world and we also know that Fury dragons mate for life like doves. So for Thunder to be considered a Night Light makes zero sense. Genetics don’t work that way. So either Toothless ran into other Night Furies that mated with his kids or his kids decided to bump uglies with each other in order for Thunder to look the way he does. And since that’s clearly not the route the creators are implying, then Thunder should canonically be a Light Fury with very few or no Night genes at all. And while I like the name Thunder, the powers also make no sense for me too. Toothless only ever used lightening to turn invisible and as a Light Fury he wouldn’t need lightening. And what was wrong with Plasma Blast?! But anyway, here’s what I’d like for Thunder to look like.

Personally, I like what I’ve done here. Full white body with grey spots all over his body, his spinal spikes with the webbing, and the green and blue eye as well as green fire, contrasting Toothless who was black with green eyes and blue fire. And this version of Thunder is a lot more feral since he grew up in Asgard with no human reaction until the earthquake. But Tom eventually wins him over. Anyways, no Night Light bull because the way I see it, they died out several hundred years ago.

4. Feathers the Featherhide

I don’t really mind the Featherhide design all that much, but I don’t like the name. Like, “Feathers”? Really? So here’s my proposal.

Lyrebird. Because of her impeccable mimicry abilities and beautiful plumage. And I would like to make the Featherhide dragons a Amphithere dragon, kinda like the Slitherwing dragons but, you know, nicer. And they have a lot more feathers then the show, on their crown, tail and they have feathery wings as well.

I don’t have the artistic lisence

(ART DONE BY Khrests ON DeviantArt) Just a general idea and I like the name Lyre better then Feathers. And I just like to imagine an Amphithere curling up around Alex like a makeshift nest.

5. Plowhorn the Gembreaker

This is the only dragon that I’m not gonna redesign. Really, the only thing I’m changing is that most Gembreakers are much bigger so that Plowhorn is the runt and that’s why she was being picked on by the bully Gembreakers.

One major thing I’m changing is her name. Let me explain; the whole episode Dragon Club, D’Angelo was referencing his Ranger badge and talking about Rangers and so, NATURALLY, I thought she was going to be named “Ranger”. but then we got... Plowhorn.

Like, it’s not a bad name, but it’s the kind of name I would expect Hiccup, Snotlout, Fishlegs and Tuffnut to name a dragon, not a modern kid who is described by the writer’s as an “army brat”.

As such, I’m renaming ‘Plowhorn’ to ‘Ranger’. Other then that, she’s pretty much perfect the way she is.

That’s all I got for now. Later I might talk about how my versions of the characters meet and bond. Let me know what you think of my redesigns.

Me finding this DeviantArt meme on the very day I finally got round to watching the second half of Lego Dreamzzz, it made sense to fill it in.

The reason I chose Tom Kullersen as the insert character for this meme is so Thunder could serve as a dream creature that was born from Tom's imagination. As for Tom's "dream avatar" form, I see him wearing his Viking helmet and possibly wearing similar clothes to Race to the Edge Hiccup, with the two being related. DeviantArt meme template used - What If this character enters the Dream World? by Disneyfan3000.

Fuck it, I still can't find anybody in the RPC so Reblog this is if you Roleplay muses that in anyway align with Norse Mythology or Viking Culture. ie muses from Tv shows like Vikings, The Last Kingdom etc.
