The Rite of Profane Ascention and Projected Shame: A Meta Analysis of Authorial Intent and Bias in Interpretation

If you are an Astarion enjoyer you are probably familiar with the following sentiments:

The crew member we can attribute this reading to would be Baudelair Welch, and they are not Astarion's main writer, rather the Senior Narrative Designer for Baldur's Gate 3. Astarion's creator and lead writer was Stephen Rooney, Rooney does attribute great assistance from Welch, however.

Welch was not initially part of the team, only being hired after the release of Early Access. As Welch as recounted the story, they saw Astarion during EA, wanting to become a part of the BG3 writing staff to enforce a particular narrative. The one that we are familiar with.

To better understand Welch's perspective on the concept of "Objectifying Fictional Characters" we must take a look at the indie game they developed during their time at Larian.

Don't Wake Me Up is a text based adventure game that puts you in the shoes of a game developer who is making a vampire dating sim. The twist being that the vampire character you created resents you for having romantic feelings for it.

While discussing the fact they wouldn't be adding "Good Endings" to their game, Welch describes their experience of having romantic feelings for fictional characters, often over real life people. A trend that, to their apparent frustraition, continued into their adulthood. I get this sense of shame, this desire to experience a more normative relationship with romantic feelings.

In a way, I feel kind of bad for Welch. I am a selfshipper, I think fictosexuality and genuine romantic interest towards fictional characters is morally neutral. However, my sympathy stops when Welch uses this to guilt their readers into feeling a certain way over narratives they don't have total authority over. Only very recently have people started to be cool about selfshipping, and phrases like "parasocial sexualization of fictional characters" does nothing to aliviate that stigma.

Hearing how the other staff talk about the endings, they do not share Welch's perspective more focused on player choice and the evolution of Astarion's Character through the player's eyes rather than a meta commentary on the relationship between player and character. As a roleplaying game, this is very much purposeful. Larian gives you the tools to tell the story you desire. To quote Neil Newbon,

"You might find him scary, and you should [...] but other people might really like that ending [...] going, actually I always saw Astarion going that route."

This a lot of meta context. Context that is not as blatant within the text as many who ascribe to this interpretation would want you to believe.

As a roleplaying game, BG3 gives you the option to depict your player character in a multitude of ways.

Is your player character a reluctant accomplace, determined to stay by Ascended Astarion's side no matter the cost? The game gives you that ability.

Do you see your character as an unwitting victim, a damsel to Ascended Astarion, a prisoner in a gilded cage? The game rewards this perspective in kind, the "freedom" lines coming to mind.

Or, perhaps your player character is mutually obsessed, a willing and enthusiastic participant in Ascended Astarion's villainous shenanagins. The game has options and responses that reflect this role as well. He is giddy, and gushes over how much fun you two will have if you lean into it.

A companion to this post, the poll I made measuring people's ending preference and weather not they were spoiled, is loosely tied to this. My methodology was, admitedly, a bit off. I neglected to add a neutral option, and of course my sample size is limited.

However, my theory was that among people that preferred keeping Astarion as a Spawn over Ascending him were exposed to spoilers, and my follow up question was meant to measure weather or not Welch's commentary had an effect on that.

Taking a look at the poll, the overall preference is for the Spawn ending, however, amongst Spawn enjoyers, they were often spoiled for his ending. I didn't get much feedback though, so weather or not this perception of Ascention had an effect on their choice remains conjecture.

What is interesting, however, is that through the polling process, (and the poll is still in progress at the time of posting this, so keep that in mind), the spilt between the other options were relatively even.

Make of that what you will.

Looking at all of this together, and from my perspective, I cannot see ascention as the "bad ending" , sense much of the argument for that perspective uses Welch's words as if they were gospel. To me, a bad ending is zombie astarion, or blowing up Gale in act 2, or letting Lae'zel perish at the Creché. I will however call it the EVIL ending. Ascended Astarion IS a villain, but I think the distinction between "bad" and "evil" is an important one to make. I cant see it the way Welch does, because I simply have an idiological opposition to their veiwpoint, a sentiment I feel is shared by many AA enjoyers.

I want to end this by stating very directly: this is not an attack on Welch as a person, rather a cirtique of of the bias inherent to the way they write and interpret fiction. A bias, I feel, people should be aware of.

FOB LORE POST Pt. 1

okay so tumblr ate the original ask i was responding to and now refuses to save/post all the edits i’ve made, so this post has to come out in two parts. i’d rate it surface level-knee deep lore (maybe some waist deep, maybe some neck deep idk we'll see)! i'll be focusing on pre-hiatus just cause post-hiatus is generally easier to find (but there will also be post-hiatus because i can't help myself). also curated to my tastes these are things that *i* always think about, so big disclaimer this is not everything. this part basically covers the fob extended universe (terms/people to know, blog links, and important texts here and there), links to unrealeased tracks/rares/covers, and a rundown on the origin story.

QUITE A DYNAMIC with pete. part of the World's Most Hated Crew which were crew members primarily shared between mcr and fob, who had bad reputations for 1) their proximity to the bands 2) being scene kings/queens 3) gossip and drama. 2006, he and Pete have a massive falling out over their blogs. since then they've made up, still talk every once in awhile. he runs the catcade in chicago and emerges out of the woodwork to stir shit up every now and then. here's his livejournal. and another one. he also has a tumblr. so go hunting if you want. most of his updates are through instagram, he loves to troll.

NOW. as far as origin stories go. let’s start with pete who was a notable figure in the chicago hardcore scene, having been in bands on bands on bands, and very notably RACETRAITOR. pete, joe, patrick (i still haven’t found the source for patrick but it’s on wikipedia so i’ll include him) and andy have all at varying points played in racetraitor, and andy still plays with racetraitor when they get together. joe and pete become friends, joe driving him around because his license is suspended, and right around that time pete starts ARMA ANGELUS and when heychris can’t make it on tour, pete convinces joe’s parents to let him fill in on bass and they all go out on the road. when they come back, arma’s kinda its last leg and this is when pete and joe start talks for a pop-punk project. joe will play guitar, pete will play bass, now they just need a drummer and a singer.

so very important lore here, joe’s hanging out in borders when he’s interrupted by none other than one patrick stump who starts a lecture on music to which joe starts lecturing back, THIS IS HOW THEY MEET. i’ll let joe tell it (click for full view):

this continues into another important bit of lore, which is that joe dragged pete to patrick’s house so he could audition and patrick answered the door wearing a sweater, shorts, and socks. this is important, it comes up time and time again, patrick answered the door in an sweater, shorts and socks. it’s important. to both me and pete. he proceeds to show them all his talents, but when he sings, that’s when it clicks and everyone in the room says you’ve got a massive set of pipes there, you’re our singer. now, patrick didn’t care about singing, in other bands he had primarily focused on drums. but he wanted to be in a band that would let him write music and he also had admired pete from afar on the scene and so he agreed to sing.

they finally pull andy when they start recording seriously and their drummer can’t make it so they ask andy to fill in. andy at this point is a notable drummer in the scene, like he plays in so many bands and is referred to as “the metal drummer.” pete and andy have known each other for a long while and they've had their eye on him since the beginning, it's just that he's in various other bands and going to school so he hasn't had the time. but they ask him to fill in and everything just falls into place. i’ll let patrick tell it:

Yesterday, the board of trustees for the library I work at voted unanimously against banning This Book Is Gay by Juno Dawson! This was a huge relief for me (and my fellow staff), and I just wanted to share a few takeaways from this experience.

For context, a library patron had submitted a formal request to have the book removed after seeing it displayed alongside other recent additions to our YA section. He took issue with, of course, the chapter on sex ed and provided pages of out-of-context quotes and straight-up lies to make the book appear "dangerous." Lots of the homophobia and puritanism you'd expect. Per our policies, we formed a committee to address his request, and the committee decided the book was fine where it was. Again per policy, he had the option to appeal to the board of trustees, which he took.

We found out he was doing this 5 days before the next board meeting. And even with that short warning, we had over 150 people show up to a small-town library board meeting that often has few or no public attendees! We couldn't fit everyone in our biggest room! Look at us all!!

Public comments are limited to 3 minutes or less, and that still lasted for more than an hour. People spoke who were parents, teachers, nurses, therapists, voting activists, workers at other libraries, and of course, many queer people. They talked about censorship, freedom of expression, freedom to read, the positive impacts of this book and books like it on youth, their own experiences as queer kids and teens or parents or such, and more--too many perspectives to list here. Every single speaker opposed the book ban. Every. One.

The patron who initiated this challenge was present, but left before public comment was over, without speaking.

So, those takeaways:

This is further evidence that campaigns of censorship and queer erasure are perpetuated by individuals and small groups, and don't represent the common view. You can check out stats on ala.org to back this up, but most people, including most parents, oppose book bans.

This turnout was gathered mainly through texts, email, chats (like Discord), phone calls, and word of mouth. Every town and city has people willing to fight and support those fighting the tides of fascism--keep in touch with your community and your allies, your local friends and trusted acquaintances, and when the time comes for action, they will show up.

Pushback, especially public, visible pushback, demoralizes bad actors. These are often people with little to do except organize and promote their hatred, often people with few material problems demanding their attention. (In this case, a retired eye doctor.) Give them a fight, and they often back down. If they don't back down, see #2 and beat them with numbers and passion.

Even after a victory, stay alert. We're prepping for litigation (not that we think he has a case, but he does have a reputation). We're also keeping a close eye on the smaller libraries in nearby towns and townships. Even if someone like this backs down once, they might try their luck somewhere easier. Keep those contact networks from #2 ready to go.

None of this is comprehensive, and your particular situation may well require different tactics. I'm not an expert, just a chronically online trans woman and librarian who's gotten unexpectedly attached to her current town. It was incredibly heartwarming to see so many people stand up for queer teens where I live, when it usually feels like nobody cares about what's happening to queers in the States. This post has already gone on longer than I expected, I'm just still quite emotional and wanted to talk about it. (Also still mentally drained from the past few days of stress...)

Huge shoutout to everyone who helped make this community action happen. Many of them were more eloquent or piercing in their comments, but here's my 3-minute spiel. It was delivered with none of the eye contact or dramatic reading I'd rehearsed because, holy shit, there were a lot of people there!

I was having thoughts about the insanity that must be going on inside of Marc's brain in the forced to come out AU and then I saw your "last Rosquez sex pre-Sepang" ask and it gave me even more thoughts.

In my head, Marc is unable to have meaningless or hate sex meanwhile Valentino can go for it easily (or so he thinks until our protagonist meets Marc, anyway) so obviously, Valentino is the one who guides them into sleeping together again in 2016 (can't decide if it's as early as the tests or if maybe Barcelona makes his last reserve break or something but— details). And if he promised himself in October of 2015, that this was the last time he was having sex with Marc, but then he lets them be together again and that leads them to being caught? Well, I am not an expert in Valentino & guilt but that sure is something interesting to consider.

Do I believe that Valentino is agreeing to the fake dating plan out of guilt? Maybe just a tiny bit. For the most part it's because he cares about Marc and can't stand to see him go through this alone/in the worst way possible (not that he can recognize that at the beginning, of course, but you know).

I loved that you mentioned the idea of Yamaha telling Valentino he could deal with this alone/didn't have to go with the plan with Marc (and it would of course be easier for him). There is a part of me that wants to push things and say the photos identify Marc very clearly but like, there could be ~reasonable doubts about Vale (not to take things too far and make him too much of a "hero" here but, that's an option, I guess).

Anyway, back to what this was originally supposed to be about : Marc's brain. All considerings, things went like this :

the man he idolized all his life became his friend and then they started having sex and Marc thought they at least were friends and understood each other in the fields that mattered to him

same man betrayed him in front of the whole world and basically called him a dangerous rider that he doesn't want to share tracks with him [and obviously this leads to all the backlash Marc had to go through but I think what stung the most, at the end of the day, was the realization that Valentino thought of him like that]

at the end of the day, I don't think Marc is one to hold grudges [or I am projecting my own self here, my bad] and if Valentino comes up to him and wants him in some kind of way? of course Marc is going to take what he can have, even if he quickly realizes Valentino is not open to the two of them talking

Valentino agreeing to the two of them fake dating? it makes absolutely zero sense, there is a part of Marc that sees this as a sign of hope and it's bad because the last time Marc hoped they had a good thing going on, Valentino destroyed him in public without any kind of warning

"Risk Management is new to the Marc Marquez system" is a quote that I absolutely adore and that he let out into the world in 2023 but I can see home boy showing some kind of self-preservation in this scenario [and Marc initially struggling to be close to Vale (like you showed so well in your short post) is part Marc not being a good actor/feeling uncomfortable demonstrating PDA in public and part Marc trying to protect himself from his own feelings for Vale] [is Marc aware of the extent of his feelings? of course not, but still]

also, like, let's be real, this is the whole fantasy Marc never really allowed himself to think about and to "live" it in those conditions? yeah, not exactly easy on the heart and brain

I have no idea where I was going with all that but in any case, I know they have a fight one day where Valentino is like "Marc, you need to put in more efforts" and "I'm doing this for you" [he didn't mean for those words to come out but oops] and that has Marc calling him out on his hypocrisy.

On a very unrelated note, I'm very curious about when they have sex again in this AU (or even when they kiss, will have to think about that).

How should I format this? (poll at the end)

OK, so a big post is being written about how the Prequels' initial reception shaped the fandom at large's perception of the meaning of those films (aka how EU authors and fans re-envisioned the original narrative of the Prequels so that it became a commentary about the Jedi, like they had always wanted).

The text is about 70% done, and I've commissioned illustrations from ginovanta, I'm in the middle of coloring them.

Yes, it's previously-covered ground for this blog, but I'm writing it anyway because I never properly addressed the subject outside of poorly-formatted rants, and I'm trying to put this in a more analytical & less whiny way. Because at the end of the day it's also such an interesting subject to me, as it speaks to how we, as an audience, consume media.

Now, this post is comparable to my EU post, in terms of length and research. Plllllllenty of quotes. Which brings me to my question.

How should I format this?

Option 1: indented text.

Text here where I narrate what's going on. Followed by

quote/quotes supporting it.

Montparnasse and Éponine: Unpacking the Némorin quote

Victor Hugo makes reference to Némorin on two separate occasions in Les Misérables. Undoubtedly, the most interesting instance where the name is featured, or at least the most interesting instance to me, is when Montparnasse and Éponine abandon the Gorbeau ambush to sneak off together, and Montparnasse is described as “être Némorin”.

“Montparnasse en effet, ayant rencontré Éponine qui faisait le guet sous les arbres du boulevard l'avait emmenée, aimant mieux être Némorin avec la fille que Schinderhannes avec le père.”

As an individual captivated by the glimpses of dynamic we see between Éponine and Montparnasse in the novel, I find myself referencing this “Némorin” quote quite often (hell, I even use “Némorin” as a catch-all tag for Montparnasse and Éponine content on my blog!). However, I realise that I’ve never taken the time before to explain this quote and the allusions it makes, nor have I ever clarified properly who Némorin exactly is. So, this post aims to unpack all that— full ramble is below the cut!

Literary Contexts: Estelle and Némorin

Let’s first delve into this character of Némorin who Montparnasse is compared to…!

To summarise, Némorin is one of the main characters in a wonderful and extremely popular French pastorale titled Estelle et Némorin, published in 1788 by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian.

I’ve tried to read this full text before but unfortunately it’s rather difficult to find an easily available translated version in English, so I will only provide an overview of the story’s plot rather than include any direct quotes. Let me employ this helpful summary of the tale between these two lovers below:

“Inspired by Daphnis and Chloe and set at the end of the fifteenth century, the novel tells of the love of the shepherd Némorin for the beautiful Estelle. She returns his love but out of duty and gratitude is obliged to marry another shepherd, Méril, after he rescues her father. Némorin despairs but is saved by Méril's heroic sacrifice of his own life in battle, a sacrifice made so that the lovers might be united.” [Source]

The story’s popularity can be evidenced in many art pieces of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century. Look at these sweet paintings and prints of the couple below!

There even exists a lovely romantic fountain statue of Estelle and Némorin which was erected in 1896– evidencing that Florian's narrative certainly had a continued popularity far beyond its original publication in the eighteenth-century!

Like so many of the fleeting references sprinkled throughout Les Misérables, readership of the time would have likely been far more familiar with the character of Némorin than readers today are. There was even an opéra-comique made of this pastoral tale in 1876! And— combining that knowledge with the story’s general popularity at the beginning of the 1800s— I think it can be safely assumed that Estelle et Némorin would have been a very recognisable tale to the first readers of Hugo's novel back in 1862.

Némorin ultimately is an ardent romantic— a humble shepherd who adores his beloved Estelle, remaining loyal in his affections to her. With a starry-eyed devotion he pursues her, and filled with love he even etches her name into a tree… a detail that I find particularly fascinating since Montparnasse’s “Némorin” encounter with Éponine initially occurs under some trees lining the boulevard.

...But, if Némorin is a besotted lover, why would Hugo want to compare Montparnasse to him?

“Être Némorin”: Applying the context to Montparnasse

On the night of the Gorbeau ambush, instead of readying himself for the planned attack on Valjean from inside the tenement with the other rogues of the Patron-Minette, Montparnasse is mysteriously missing. When Thénardier asks Babet where this juvenile lead is, Babet explains that he has stopped for a “chin-wag” (Rose trans.) with Éponine.

We then find out in a later chapter that Montparnasse and Éponine were seemingly doing much more than just chatting that night, and it is at this point where Montparnasse and Némorin are compared:

“Montparnasse had, in fact, encountered Éponine as she stood on the watch under the trees of the boulevard, and had led her off, preferring to play Némorin** with the daughter rather than Schinderhannes with the father.” (Rose trans.)

**I think it is important to note that in the original French text, it is not worded as preferring ‘to play Némorin’, but instead ‘to be Némorin’. I personally find that there are distinct differences between this translated phrase and the phrase in original French, as ‘being’ Némorin seems to hold far more significance than ‘playing’ Némorin.

Basically, the TL;DR of the quote is thus— Montparnasse would prefer to be Éponine’s lover / he prefers to seduce Éponine than participate in criminal activities with her father. (Brief note; Schinderhannes was a real-life, internationally famous criminal from the eighteenth-century. I could go more into this comparison also but I don't want to get too side-tracked on this post. Although, I find it interesting that Montparnasse is compared to two starkly contrasted figures here, and it is typical of Hugo to use classical, literary, and real-life figures as symbolic vessels for certain concepts).

Incidentally, I suppose that in the context of this quote, Éponine would be the “Estelle” to Montparnasse’s “Némorin”. And yet, Montparnasse’s actions here do not sound like the behaviour of Némorin at all.

... Despite the comparison to this romantic figure, I don’t think Hugo is actually expecting Montparnasse to act like a loyal, devoted lover with the girl. Rather, I’m almost entirely certain that he is being purposefully sarcastic here!

I mean, c’mon, do we really think that Montparnasse and Éponine left the boulevard together to spend the evening sharing a love as innocent and chaste as Némorin and Estelle? Absolutely not! I think that their encounter was certainly a lot of lustful than that— especially reading between the lines when we find out that Javert arrested Éponine later that night but Montparnasse had disappeared and seemingly left her behind— which indicates to me that their night-time rendezvous was only temporary, and likely more similar to a hook-up.

Hugo’s comment on Montparnasse preferring to be Némorin does tell us something about his character traits (aka that he indulges in all distractions and vices, sometimes at the expense of participating in criminal heists), but ultimately I think that this line is just Hugo making a little tongue-and-cheek comment about Montparnasse being a flirt and alluding to him having a casual relationship with Éponine. Just like Montparnasse is a false dandy, we should read him as a false Némorin! He and Éponine are not true lovers by any means, but the quote does signify that they almost certainly have slept together and thus share a deeper connection than they do with other characters.

Additional Analyses

Okay— hear me out— but I think that the Estelle et Némorin concept can be further drawn out concerning Montparnasse and Éponine in later parts of the novel… not involving Némorin’s character specifically, but rather in relation to the wider narrative of Florian's pastorale and Hugo's Les Misérables…

We are told that Montparnasse is Némorin (albeit he is likely a satirical parody of the character) as he leads Éponine away from the Gorbeau tenement on the night of the ambush. But, to me, Montparnasse also partially seems to morph into another character of Florian’s story when the Patron-Minette escape from La Force at a later point in the narrative. This character’s name is Méril!

Who is Méril, I hear you ask? Well, he is the man that Estelle is originally expected to marry. He works with Estelle’s father and saved his life, which is why she is to be wed to him.

And, who do we see working with Thénardier through the Patron-Minette? Who “saves” Thénardier’s life when he tries to escape La Force? Who demands that the rest of the Patron-Minette hang around and search for his signal instead of abandoning him, waiting outside the prison in the rain until 4 o’clock in the morning? Who do we know is explicitly called Thénardier's “almost son-in-law” at one point in the novel?…

You guessed it: Montparnasse!

I find it important and extremely interesting to analyse these partial similarities between Montparnasse and Méril in terms of their actions, as it might be used to further explain Éponine and Montparnasse’s dynamic. It also emphasises my above suggestion that Montparnasse is not a genuine Némorin.

Additionally, I would like to briefly mention that the only other reference to Némorin that we get in Les Misérables is spoken by Gillenormand in a speech at Marius and Cosette’s wedding:

“Can there be too many perfumes, too many open rose-buds, too many nightingales singing, too many green leaves, too much aurora in life? Can people love each other too much? Can people please each other too much? Take care, Estelle, thou art too pretty! Have a care, Nemorin, thou art too handsome! Fine stupidity, in sooth! Can people enchant each other too much, cajole each other too much, charm each other too much? Can one be too much alive, too happy?” (Hapgood trans.)

Thus with Némorin being mentioned as an explicitly loving figure here at Marius’ wedding, I think we have finally found the real Némorin character of Hugo’s novel…!

Montparnasse is merely a pretender, a Méril in Némorin’s guise— but Marius’ personality is far more suited to be Némorin than Montparnasse is. And, of course, if we interpret Éponine as a sort-of Estelle (although, we should be mindful that Cosette is the “real” Estelle of this novel) we actually see her choose the “real” Némorin [Marius] over Méril / the “false” Némorin [Montparnasse] at rue Plumet, when she refuses to let Montparnasse and the rest of the Patron-Minette pass the gate and enter the house.

Of course, not all of the elements of Florian’s Estelle et Némorin match up to these characters and their actions— most notably the detail that Méril sacrifices his life for Némorin because he can see how much genuine love he has for Estelle, and how much genuine love she has for him— but I think there are some general similarities potentially at play between these two texts.

Although the “Némorin” quote is only fleeting, there is so much context hidden behind it which can help us to further understand Montparnasse’s character and his relationship with Éponine. Namely, Hugo’s tongue-and-cheek comparison between Montparnasse and Némorin when he sneaks off with Éponine undoubtedly suggests that there was more going on between the pair than we might first assume, even though they evidently do not harbour the same romantic, loving affections that Florian’s Némorin and Estelle do.

All my thoughts on Alan Wake 2: The Final Draft below! Major Spoilers for the game (and Control 2019). This is a very long post, but this game has taken over my mind.

The Final Draft was good! I’ve never played NewGame+ versions of games before, so I don’t know if this is usually how it goes. The additional material and introduction/ending makes it all worth it, although I wish there was a way to speed up the case board process, since I completed almost all of it my first go.

My immediate concern is. What is ‘a master of many worlds’? What does that MEAN?? Surface level, he can already exert power over his world and the dark place, so that was the two he was initially referring to. Since Door said the Dark Place was a mirror that reflected other realities, is that why Alan now holds power of them? No matter what, he is Way too confident for someone who’s been an absolute mess. The power of being loved and reaching out to others is just that good.

I’ve vaguely known about this draft’s ending and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Actually playing through again helped me lose that negativity, although I still prefer the first ending! Hearing Saga’s relief at Logan being alive and Alan rising from the dead was one amazing sequence. Visually beautiful and acted out.

The EXPRESSION you can see on Saga the second Logan picks up. I was so happy for her. Having Logan and Casey by her side. No matter what comes next, they succeeded in saving both of them. Now—are Saga, Casey, and Alan all in the dark place? In an overlap? Or Bright Falls?

The “love is strange” quote was a personal favorite. Sometimes you love someone so much, both of you ascend past your humanly self and become so intertwined in thought and memory that you’re always with each other. Love is strange.

Is anyone else ridiculously nervous about what’ll happen with Alan and Alice?? They both seem to be in states that are tied to each other and the dark place. I don’t know if they can technically leave. Read some theories on Alice being the bullet of light, but I took it as a sort of symbolic gesture, with her still being an agent moving in the dark place. Similar to Zane or Darling. Idk.

The ‘Spiral’ writer’s room video got to me even more than the ending! Bringing up how time is overlapping, which means Alan IS already at the end of the spiral, as an enlightened figure, potentially “playing a secret game” or “building something”. There’s an inevitability to Alan’s fate that stresses me out. Describing himself as a demiurge or demon too,, somehow he made everything 10x more unsettling. So thanks for that Alan. Love it for the horror, but also I just want Alice and Alan to reunite with Barry… it’s not looking so good.

I was already a fan of the cliffhanger-ish ending, but, even after seeing this one with more confirmations, I don’t understand comments I’ve seen about having to play the Final Draft to get the actual/true ending. The first ending was emotionally satisfying and left a bigger impression imo. It was the turning point of this entire cycle Alan was stuck in and is what makes the Final Draft’s ending feel earned. It didn’t need confirmation on Logan answering back or Alan ascending because Alice’s post-credit video implied that was what would eventually happen. I still like this final draft’s ending, but I don’t think it’s to the detriment of the original playthrough and won’t hurt if anyone doesn’t end up playing through it (Kinda how I view AWAN too—although I haven’t finished it)

Dr. Darling my beloved. My everything. Remedy took their chance at making the funniest crossover. Alan repeating text over and over, being what’s keeping the dark place formed in its current shape—reminded me of the final nursery rhyme. This could’ve been creepier, but Darling’s reaction of “let’s not think too much about that” for the voice was golden. And what is there even to say about Zane and Darling. They got to flirt, so good for them. The ramifications of this could be dire or stay as some gag.

My conclusion on the situation with Alan, Zane, and Scratch is “I don’t think we’ll ever really know.” All the same person, but also every iteration is their own person. Their existences are too muddled and changed and distorted to ever find an origin or who made who.

I do find it fun that generally Zane IS helping Alan/Scratch and wanted to collaborate with Alan, and Scratch also wanted to become one with Alan, be the heart, bring an enteral deerfest that celebrates Alan. They’re both dangerous and/or manipulative, but it doesn’t seem to be out of hate.

My game had a bug where I could never talk with Odin and Tor apart from the mandatory scenes to move the game, so I missed everything near her trailer AND whatever they were standing around for in the Final Draft 😔

The Lake House page is making me excited for the DLC with the same name! Big fan of Remedy’s love for mad scientists and their death-by-hubris. Another Darling name drop that further shows how annoyed some FBC employees are at Darling’s golden boy reputation and his smug confidence. Incredible.

The Night Springs intro video!! Literally lays out what happens. Alan succeeds, transcends, and becomes a master of these realities he was inspired from. Interested in what this means for the Night Springs DLC. Will it make characters experience one of these other realities or will it remain grounded in the real world of Alan Wake 2?

I’m in love with how Alan Wake 2 repeatedly tells the player what the story and themes are, and outright says reveals and the ending before it plays out. The Yötön Yö song about Scratch, the Zane film of the same name spoiling “It’s not a loop it’s a spiral” and Alice+Alan in the Final Draft, this Night Springs intro confirming his success, all the nursery rhymes predicting Saga’s life, etc. Telling out what will happen through different mediums of art. It’s a clever way of making everything fit together and imply that Door, Zane, Alice, etc. aren’t as affected by the loop’s cycles restarting.

There’s mysteries that haven’t gotten answered at all. Nothing for Tim’s future and underlying connection to Door (I know it’s related to Quantum Break, but haven’t played). The 103 door a guest at the lodge kept banging and screaming at, which I think had the square looped symbol at the Oceanview Motel in Control. The employees door at Oh Deer Diner was always closed off.

Also, I think one really weird part of SSO marketing themselves as a "girls' game" and sticking to that really really hard is their rock hard refusal to let the player character be a boy.

TL;DR because this got long: It is not progressive to, in a game about horse riding (a very stereotypically girly hobby), exclude boys.

(Spoilers for Saving Concorde and the Light Ride, but only in the first paragraph.)

We all know SSO's decision to only allow for girl player characters isn't about being Aideen reborn or the game being about sisterhood or only women being Soul Riders. Had that been the only problem, it would've been solved the second Rhiannon explained how Concorde could've been reborn as a mare - I quote, "A soul is not defined by the gender it's born into".

I absolutely do not mean to through this post make it seem like boys' inclusion in SSO is a priority over gender equality in gaming, and obviously I understand that women and girls have historically been excluded from gaming and have not had games catered to them. However, a) (as other people have pointed out) that isn't even NEARLY as much the case today as it was 10-15 years ago. b) I would honestly argue that not allowing the player character to be any other gender than a girl in SSO furthers that inequality. Also, this post doesn't even really touch on the full consequences of not having truly diverse body shape options and some variety of pronoun customization in a game that's "for girls", but in short: if you exclude all non-girls, you also cannot include all girls.

I've seen the (mostly community, to be fair) argument that "boy characters would lead to more problems with romancing", and that's bullshit. People already do that. Start reporting the daily weddings happening in Silverglade if you're seriously concerned about that.

I've seen SSO's argument that "in many games, girls are forced to play as boys", and I would really buy that argument if this was a single-player game with a premade player character, but do you know what games never ever do that except for SSO? Massive-multiplayer online games. That's right: that thing SSO is (or at least calls itself, but that's a topic for another post).

I've seen SSO's argument that boys can play Star Stable, they can play with the girl avatar just fine, but do you know which demographic of children interested in horses isn't going to look at SSO's website and go, "oh, that's all right, I'll play as a girl and it'll be fine and fun!"? That's right: preteen boys.

That's where we get to the next part of this conundrum: there are horses involved. Yeah, you know, that hobby that boys have never been shamed or bullied for partaking in! /sarcasm, obviously. If a boy is interested enough in horses to want to play a video game centered around them, it is more than likely he's been mocked and more than likely that mocking included insults aimed at his perceived femininity for partaking in equestrian sport and/or insulting him for enjoying a "girly" hobby. No 12 year old boy, especially not if he is being bullied a little bit, is going to look at SSO's character creation screen and go, "Oh, what a great feminist initiative! I feel just fine and dandy leaning into the perceived traits that I am being mocked for".

Horse riding is not traditionally seen as a "boys' hobby", and SSE is only furthering that perspective by actively choosing time and time again to not allow SSO's player characters to have physically masculine attributes or for SSO's players to choose their pronouns in game.

It's weird. I don't understand why they're doing it.

Part of me earnestly suspects it's a coding limitation: if SSE wanted to properly include non-girls in SSO, they would have to work for an amount of time ranging from many months to several years to change the way quest text and pronouns work.

I never truly expected them to care about true inclusivity enough to do that. I shouldn't be disappointed. It's easier to keep up the image of this being a grand feminist mission than to say, we would like to do this but our code is flawed and it would take so long and it's just. not. important. enough.

Melione (Greek Goddess)

Are we going to roll with what is trending? Yes. Yes we are. Let's watch the trailer.

**HADES 2 spoilers incoming**

Supergiant games has revealed that the protagonist of Hades 2 will be Melinoe. Zagreus was an obscure deity from the Orphic Hymns and Milone is very much the same… except even more so. We at least have multiple sources on Zag, but as far as I can tell, we only have one text on Melione, which is short enough I’ll quote it in full: 

I call upon Melinoe, saffron-cloaked nymph of the earth, whom revered Persephone bore by the mouth of the Kokytos river upon the sacred bed of Kronian Zeus. In the guise of Plouton Zeus tricked Persephone and through wiley plots bedded her; a two-bodied spectre sprang forth from Persephone's fury. This spectre drives mortals to madness with her airy apparitions as she appears in weird shapes and strange forms, now plain to the eye, now shadowy, now shining in the darkness — all this in unnerving attacks in the gloom of night. O goddess, O queen of those below, I beseech you to banish the soul's frenzy to the ends of the earth, show to the initiates a kindly and holy face."

This is complicated and I’m just doing a quick read, so fellow academics please forgive and correct me if I get something wrong. 

It is absolutely clear from this passage that Melione is the daughter of Persephone, but who her father is is a bit more debatable. While the text specifies Zeus, lots of chthonic imagery is involved and Hades/Pluto is mentioned. Different groups of Greeks syncretized Zeus and Hades at different times to different degrees. While most modern people know them as separate gods, some groups (like the Orphics who wrote this hymn) viewed them as aspects of one deity. Others gave Hades a “Zeus'' alias because he was ruler of the Underworld. So depending on the story you want to tell, Melinoe's father could be Zeus, Zeus pretending to be Hades, Hades, or both as a single deity.

The other non-obvious bit from my readings is that the “saffron-cloaked” reference indicates Melinoe is a Moon Goddess. If you watched the Hades 2 trailer, you probably noticed she wears a crescent moon diadem and is trained by a Goddess who is most definitely Hecate, the only other saffron-cloaked deity in the Orphic Hymns (although the epitaph is associated with other deities elsewhere).

 As a chthonic deity, Melinoe also gets associated with the dead, in particular ghosts. She has a terrible and fearful appearance from being the embodiment of Persephone’s, which combined with the darkness motif, makes Melinoe a goddess of nightmares as well. Again, all this is seen in the trailer with Melinoe’s ghostly arm and eyes.

So while we don’t have a huge number of sources to play with, there is still enough for Supergiant to bring Melinoe into their game. And if they can do it, so can you!

Pathfinder

For Pathfinder 1e domains, I’m avoiding alignment-based domains on purpose. I’m also going to consider Melinoe a demigod and give her four domains/subdomains.

For Pathfinder 2e, things are a bit more straightforward since we’ve done away with subdomains and everything’s just a domain.

Planescape

Placing Melione in Planescape is easy at least - she would be found in the Grey Wastes with her mother or visiting one of Hecate’s two realms on the Grey Wastes and Baator. Faction-wise, the Bleak Congress and Dustmen are natural fits for her followers. The Revolutionary League and Mercykillers could also work for followers who seek to avenge the wronged and the abused.

I think an interesting twist to Melinoe would be if she is also worshipped by aberrations and dragons due to her frightful description. So if you are running a Greek-themed campaign, perhaps you have some chthonic beholders who worship Melinoe alongside the ghosts of their ancestors? Given Melinoe’s association with ghosts and darkness, I would toss in shadows, spectres, and wraiths alongside her minions as well. 

Scion

Making Scion stats for Melione is pretty straightforward. Judge and Passion (Rage) are there because Melinoe was birthed from Persephone’s anger over the injustices against her. I'm also writing Melione as a Guide since they are easy to make and I absolutley love Guides. 

Callings: Judge, Leader, Liminal

Purviews: Darkness, Death, Moon, Passion (Fear, Rage)

Melinoe (One-Dot Guide) 

Asset Skill: Occult

Roman Numeral I and Footnote 14

Okay, so I was reading some posts by 1moreff-creator on the Literature Girl Insane MV (this one on the roman numerals and this one on the footnotes).

Specifically, I was looking at Footnote 14 and Roman Numeral I. Let's start with Footnote 14.

I didn't initially notice this one because it's so faint, but Footnote 14 appears at 3:52. Behind the text (the world of abnormal sentiment dances), there's a faint equals sign, and a footnote in the top right corner of that.

Footnote 14 is as follows:

[14] Hint: word length of 256 

I had no idea what this meant, but a helpful anon told me it was Hamlet's soliloquy. After some unfortunate luck I got confused, seeing as Hamlet has 7 soliloquies and, based on the sources I looked at, none of them had exactly 256 words.

With the help of fuji-iri, though, the identity of the soliloquy was found! It's the most famous one: the "to be or not to be" speech. I'll link it here.

So, that's the identity of Footnote 14! The hint is telling us it's Hamlet's main soliloquy. Not too surprising considering there's, like, seven or something other references to Hamlet in this MV.

But, how does that connect to Roman Numeral I?

Well, I want to look at where Footnote 14 appears again. I'm going to show a few screenshots that happen all in a row.

Putting these together, you get I, then a bunch of numbers & a bunch more numbers = ?????.

Now, I'm not even going to try with the number scramble. I already know from the password thing that I'm completely useless at these number cipher type things. I'm just going to ignore those, the & sign and the question marks. Hopefully whatever it says/means doesn't completely invalidate my actual theory. My best guess is that there are two different puzzles here, and the numbers and & sign are a puzzle separate from what I'm solving.

Anyways, that leaves only two parts of it: the I and the =.

As 1moreff-creator points out in their roman numerals post, while the I here looks most like the roman numeral 1, which correlates to Xander, pairing him with (the world of abnormal sentiment dances) doesn't... make sense? Like, it doesn't feel like it means anything for his character.

However, if you ignore the number scrambles, you end up with something interesting.

I = 14.

What if Xander's roman numeral is being used to say that he corresponds to footnote 14?

It's not completely unprecedented for the footnotes to interact with the numerals. For example, Min's roman numeral X, or 10, appears in the form of a bloody X, like we see on the class trial portraits. However, there's a footnote in the top right, footnote 10, which tells us that roman numeral X is 10. This confirms that this is her number. Footnotes 6 and 17 are also found here, which further proves that it's possible for footnotes and numerals to interact.

So, this is very interesting. Let's consider that Xander's roman numeral connects him to Footnote 14, which, as we've established, is Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy.

Uh, content warning for suicide in this next bit.

This soliloquy is about considering suicide; to "be" is to live, and "not to be" is to die. I don't get the sense that Xander is particularly suicidal, but it's also true that he does clearly struggle with the weight of what's happened in his life. His secret quote is the literal definition of survivor's guilt, and in the second bonus episode "Visiting Graves," he clearly holds a lot of regret.

As we see here, Xander isn't particularly suicidal, but he clearly isn't, uh... mentally well? If his death is just "another pitiful waste of a human life" to him rather than, like, being important because it's his life, it's not a great sign. Plus, "Unnamed Classmate" (who is almost certainly Mai Akasaki), who knows Xander much better than we do, seems to think it's plausible that Xander would say that he wished he died there, so that's not great.

Plus, there's a line in the soliloquy about "the heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks," which I think is funny considering he died via electrocution.

In any case, there's one more thing I want to point out regarding this.

Like I mentioned, there are several references to Hamlet throughout this MV. Notably, this exact soliloquy appears somewhere else in the MV.

The previous screen says to be, and the next screen says not to be. However, I've chosen the "or" screen for one very specific reason.

XIII. Teruko.

Yeah. If I'm right about this, that means that both Teruko and Xander's roman numerals are the to be or not to be speech.

Other than linking the two of them together again, I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I thought I'd point it out. It's a very interesting connection to give the two of them, as our early protagonist/support combo.

I don’t know if I have any angsty endings in my fics but probably By my side is one of the angstiest stories I’ve posted on AO3. Just your average Midsummer fic with some necromancy and raising someone from the dead.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

They all have happy endings, but probably A lesson in love, which has a feel good ending, or Specialised in you where they get to a happy ending through some initial angst and drama. Feels even happier then, doesn’t it?

8. Do you get hate on fics?

None so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Nobody should have to deal with it.

9. Do you write smut?

Yesss. Whatever they end up doing, there’s usually an emotional connection there because that’s how I prefer to write intimate scenes. But ngl, half the time I'm pushing myself to get the words out because I still think "oh no, is this really awkward" but then I remember the post I saw here on Tumblr where an actual published novel had the cringiest smut I've ever seen, and I'm fine again. We've all got this!

I translate my own fics.

Years ago I wrote a few HP crack fics together with others.

James/Sirius. (To quote Snape: Always. 💀) Almost from the start. Sometime before the fifth book came out I was completely into Prongsfoot. Not counting years.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

I don’t post anything until I finish it first, so I have no hanging WIPs on AO3. But I have plenty in my WIP folder. I like to remain hopeful that I’ll end up writing them eventually. Not going to stress about anything.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I can come up with some nice plot ideas, funny and tense scenarios and good banter between J and S.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

My ability to finish fics and focus on one fic at a time has felt difficult lately. I don’t know why I seem to run out of steam when I have the last third left. Also descriptions are hard for me, partly because while I love how they set the mood and make the text more vivid, I’m always eager to just write what the characters are doing and saying to each other. Descriptions in English are especially hard because it’s my second language and I’m always guessing if what I write has the right nuance and tone etc.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

Sure, why not if it fits the story. I added a very minimal amount of French flavour to Fashion and hoped that no one would get too pissed off about it (mostly because of my poor attempt to write French English accent, not the actual French in there).

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Harry Potter. The first fic I ever posted as a teenager was a humour fic where Harry and his friends time travelled into the past and for some reason all the guys had to take part in a beauty competition (Mr Hogsmeade ’76) hahaha. This fic does not exist anywhere online anymore.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

Specialised in you is dear to me because it was not supposed to become at all what it is but James Potter took over the plot and I was a mere scribe at that point. Also I have a 20k Prongsfoot fic in Finnish that I haven’t translated into English yet but it’s the apple of my eye. I did a lot of research and put so much time and effort and all my Prongsfoot feels into it. It’s loosely inspired by the film Velvet Goldmine i.e. glam rock, glitter and S pining for J.

Calling All A-Team Fans – Help Preserve Fic from Fanfiction.net

I recently reblogged a post warning that Fanfiction.net could soon be lost to us forever. In the interest of preserving fandom history, many people are taking action to save fics before the site goes down (which, as far as I can tell, could happen at any moment – could be days, could be months, could be years... could end up being totally fine, I have no idea, but I’d rather not risk it).

There are 64 pages of A-Team (TV) fanfic on Fanfiction.net.

That’s about 1,600 individual stories.

They could all be lost to us at any moment (if the author hasn’t uploaded them elsewhere, like to AO3).

In the interest of preserving our fandom’s history, I’m rallying y’all to help save these fics.

To quote from someone on that other post:

“Do it comprehensively—start on the last page and save every. Single. One. Make sure you include the header and any author’s notes. EDIT NOTHING, ONLY DOCUMENT. Yes, if that means someone misspelled something or you spot a misnamed character, you need to keep that error. If you can form a “network” with friends to save all of a fandom’s works, DO IT.”

I’m taking care of the first (er, last) page right now. I’m not sure if I’ll have the energy to do more tonight. But I’m getting started archiving just in case we lose the fics.

I’ve been copy/pasting the fics into individual Google Docs, storing them in a folder I’ve titled “Fanfiction.net A-Team Archive”, and titling them as suggested below:

“I strongly recommend using the following format for whatever you save, so it can be indexed later: fandom_fictitle_author_datefirstposted.fileextension. So for example (I’m making this fic up for demonstration purposes, don’t bother looking for it), naruto_blessing_ichigo98_07192009 would be Blessing, by ichigo98, posted in the Naruto fandom on 19 July 2009. This provides all the information needed to see if a fic has been cross posted to the AO3, and to run a search engine to see if it’s archived elsewhere.”

I’ve also been copy/pasting the fic stats from the top of the fic, and putting them in the “summary” section of the Google Doc:

I’m not saying it needs to be done this way specifically, just as long as fics are getting saved.

If you wanna join me, I’ve set up a Google spreadsheet to mark which pages have been covered.

Feel free to tackle a page and put your tumblr @ or nickname or initial it or whatever you’re comfortable with.

If you’re going to use Google Drive/Docs to save the fics, I would recommend using a spare Google account if you have one (I’m using an account I have for getting spam emails lol), so you have plenty of room in the Drive.

Note on copy/pasting: Fanfiction.net’s interface doesn’t let you copy/paste on the desktop version. So, when you open a fic, change the “www” part of the URL to “m” to bring up the mobile version. This should let you highlight and copy the text without issues. I’ve also found that, on my computer at least, scrolling to the bottom and highlighting and then dragging the mouse back up to the top of the page highlights the text a lot quicker than starting at the top and scrolling down.

And, remember, this isn’t about saving only the fics you like. It’s about preserving the creations of our fellow fans and creating an archive. So.

I don’t know what we’ll actually do with these fics later... upload them to Ao3?? That seems like something we shouldn’t do without permission from the authors, right?? But many of them may be unreachable, given that some of these fics were posted all the way back in 2000. So. Idk.

But for now, the important thing is just to make sure we have them saved.

If you have some time to spare, tackling a page or two would be cool.

Just remember to check the spreadsheet so you don’t waste time saving fics that have already been saved.

If you want to add your saved fic Docs to the same Google Drive folder, I’ve made it public and editable, so you should be able to put your Docs in there. Please don’t abuse this power lol this is about preserving fandom history, and I happen to think that matters.

EDITING TO ADD: Someone pointed out that Fanfiction.net automatically filters out “M” rated fics when you first go to a search page, so if you’re helping archive the fics, remember to go to “Filters” and change the “Rated” filter to “Rating: All”, so we’re not missing anything.

hello! long-time lurker here. feeling very brave right now and very much felt encouraged by @callivich​, so here i go.

What made you fall in love with Gallavich? aside from the fact that their love story probably covers every possible trope ever and noel and cam truly lived and breathed these characters into life, as a closeted kid who had once ‘loved’ and was extremely afraid to be found, i also deeply related to their initial struggles with the hiding and the pushing away. but the way ian and mickey made it ! and got married ! and things are generally looking up ! it’s such a joy to witness and fills me with great hope.

How long have you been a fan? a year and three months! i know, i know... i’m a baby. but there is nothing very baby about how this show and ship changed my brain chemistry because i have never devoted this much on anything until... well.

Favourite Gallavich moment/scene? oh man it’s like picking a favorite child... can i say everything? no? okay i would say s3e3, when they were running away from the cops after mickey headbutted n*d on the street. it’s so carefree, they were just two boys laughing and running without a hint of what’s to come and now i’m crying!

Favourite Shameless character apart from Ian and Mickey? fiona. is that a red flag? idk but i’ll defend her and let her knock me out actually.

Do you write or draw or make edits? i create when i feel too much or when an idea is ping ponging around my head and demands to be known by the world or when something i want to consume has not existed yet. so i have a very sporadic relationship with making stuff (also because college sucks). i (sort of) write and make video edits or memes.  

Favourite type of Gallavich fics? i love AUs. god i LOVE aus. i prefer multi-chaps, but i also adore extremely witty one shots with good dialogue or banter. nothing in particular. just put those boys in situations and i will eat it up.

Favourite Gallavich quote? SO many great ones. my first one would always be the classic “what you and i have makes me free”, but aside from that there’s also “we got nothing to be ashamed of” “what fucking world do you live in?” because holy shit.

Anything else you’d like to share about yourself? head empty no thoughts. just want to say, every one on here is so fucking talented and welcoming. the words, the art, the fics, the gifs, the manips, the hilarious text posts, the metas, the podcasts, etc. i see you. you keep this community alive and it’s the most beautiful thing i’ve ever seen. and i’m so, so grateful. i internally squeal every time someone makes something because wow i get these treasures for free. all for the love of some silly lil boys. wonderful, wonderful gift. i am a chronic introvert folks and is a very awkward human and sometimes i still feel shy but really, all i want to do is scream at you for how great you all are.
