Why I love…

✨Omega✨

To start off this little series I’m doing, I thought I’d make a post highlighting the little girl who has become my ultimate comfort character. 🥰

Omega has only been around for a little over a year now. But little did I know that when she came onto the scene, she would also come crashing her way into my heart. While there are plenty of Star Wars characters I love and can relate to, she is the one character that I feel deeply connected to on a personal level. When I look at her, it’s like I see a younger version of myself (in almost every way but physical because I’m a pale brunette, but you get the point 😂).

I’ve seen the way some people online have said that they don’t like Omega, citing the way she often gets herself into trouble, lacks common sense (particularly near the beginning of the show), and has a sunny disposition. I’ve seen how people say that she’s “annoying” and “a terrible character” because of those things. While I think it’s perfectly fine to not be a fan of certain characters and to be annoyed with them, I’m gonna have to do a hard disagree on the “terrible character” argument. In my opinion, Omega is one of the most well-written Star Wars characters, for these reasons:

Her behavior is such a believable representation of that of a young child discovering the world around her. For someone her age seeing new things for the first time, it’s natural to be curious and to ask questions. Some might think that’s “annoying,” but that’s just what kids do. They have a desire to learn about the world around them and to understand things. I think the show has conveyed that perfectly so far.

Her character development throughout season 1 is so seamless. When she’s first introduced, she’s a little innocent thing, unaware of her potential and the power she holds. By the end of the season, she’s a confident little lady who is sure of herself and secure of her place in the Batch. But it wasn’t a sudden shift in her character that occurred; her character was developed in little ways through each episode. There are just little nudges, little lessons, that slowly develop her character in the smallest, simplest ways until you get to the end of season 1 and realize how much character development had actually taken place that whole time. Her arc in season 1 is so incredibly organic, and that’s something I appreciate so much about the show’s writing.

While these are reasons that I argue make her a well-written character, my love and appreciation for her go far deeper than that because of the ways I connect to her personally and the traits she has that I value highly in people, those traits being:

She’s fiercely loyal to her friends. There are several instances in season 1 where she sticks up for her friends who have been wronged and/or are in need. From starting a whole food fight in Tipoca City for her brothers who were mocked by regs, to convincing her brothers to help Hera Syndulla save her parents from the Empire, to insisting they help Cid take her parlor back from the son of a crime boss, she shows that she is willing to do whatever it takes to help her people. And when you think about it, she didn’t have to do any of that. She didn’t have to stick up for anyone in any of those situations. But she chose to because she deeply cares about her family and friends. And when she’s hyperfocused on rescuing Hunter from the Empire? That is in spite of every fear and every instinct telling her to stay away from Kamino. The fact that she—a literal child—faces her past and all the trauma that comes with returning to it all is so powerful. She loves so deeply and is so incredibly loyal to her family.

She sees the good in everything. Even when dealing with some of the worst people (besides Cad Bane and Fennec Shand, who literally snatched her a collective several times), she is still able to see their humanity. One of the best examples of this is when she’s being held hostage by the Pykes with Roland Durand. While she chastises him for taking over Cid’s parlor, she still comes to his defense and saves him from being killed by the Pykes. And this moment…

…just shows the kind of heart she has. The fact that she sticks up for a guy who did some pretty horrible stuff reflects tremendously on her capacity to see the humanity in others. That is an incredible trait in someone so young. Normally, children don’t think that deeply when dealing with people who’ve wronged them; they just think, “This person did something bad. They hurt me/my friends/etc.” The fact that Omega looks beyond that and sees people for who they are? Good freaking soup. 🤌🏻

Though young and inexperienced, she is so willing to learn and grow. In the beginning of the show, she makes a lot of mistakes and shows just how small and naive she is. But with the help and guidance of her brothers, she learns important lessons and develops skills essential to not only surviving, but to really holding her own among the squad of elite soldiers. I also love all the questions she asks because she wants to learn about the galaxy she’s in. She hungers for knowledge. Her curiosity helps her understand things on a deeper level, and it’s a wonderful part of who she is.

At her core, Omega is a sweet girl. This is probably the biggest reason I gravitate toward this character. Even as she learns and grows as a person, her heart stays so gentle. She may have quirks and might make a lot of mistakes, but her heart is always in the right place. Her desire to help others is, in my opinion, absolutely precious. Her empathetic nature is a treasure. Additionally, the wonder in her eyes as she experiences the galaxy around her is a reflection of her pure heart, and the joy she exudes is infectious. She sees the beauty in even the most inconsequential things, and I love that so much. Some examples:

In summary, Omega is a gem of a character. To me, she perfectly captures the essence of childlike innocence, joy, and love. She’s so caring and wise beyond her years. She also allows what she learns to shape her into a more educated person without letting the terrible things steal her sense of wonder.

What I hope to see in the future for Omega:

While I’m not ready to see her grow up just yet, the things we’ve gotten to see from season 2 so far have shown that time never slows, not even in the galaxy far, far away. While Omega is growing up and coming into herself as a mini mercenary, I hope she never loses her kind soul and desire to help others. I also hope she never ceases to see beauty in the mundane.
