Lily James - Biopics Panel (Pamela Anderson)

1.) Who did you play?

I played Pamela Anderson in the mini series Pam and Tommy! 

2.) What gravitated you to that role?

I think the world likes to think they know the Pamela Anderson story and they kinda made her into the butt of the joke. But it wasn’t like that. She was a victim and this terrible thing happened to her and she was shunned for it. Pamela is this strong, smart and independent woman and she deserved to have her story told the right way. 

3.) What was prep like for your role?

Intense! I had a wonderful acting and vocal coach and they helped me with everything from the moments and of course, the iconic voice. I watched every movie, interview and anything else for prep. I read lots of stuff she had written to get inside her head and a lot of screaming into a pillow to get the voice right! 

4.) Was there anything about the role that didn’t resonate with you?

Her relationship with Tommy. It was toxic and I think we all know that. I get it, it’s hard when you are in love and leaving is not easy but sometimes when I was reading a script I just wanted to yell at her ‘you deserve better!’ 

5.) Would you play this person again?

No, I don’t think so. I am happy with what we did. I would love to work with Seb and the team again but I think Pamela story has been told and we don’t need to revisit. 

6.) Did you find out anything about yourself while playing another person?

Yes. This was by far the biggest acting challenge I had ever done! There was a lot... a lot of views on line about the whole thing, mainly people upset that it was me playing her and that caused a lot of self doubt in myself. But I learnt to believe in myself, to believe in my own abilities and just how tenacious can be. 

7.) What was the most challenging thing about being in a biopic?

All eyes are on you. Someone like Pamela who is such a public figure, people know a lot about her and they all expect you to be able to pull it off. One thing is wrong and the internet will come for you! Also wanting to take a story that has been mocked for years and make sure we were telling it right and giving the power back to who deserved it. 

8.) Have you met the person you played?

No, I reached out to her but she was not interested in meeting and I respected her wishes.

As some of you may know, Hulu released a series called “Pam & Tommy” in early February. It tells the story of one of the most famous power couples of the 80’s/90’s and their sex tape that broke the internet. I wasn’t going to talk about this situation or even want to watch it but what made me talk about it is this post I saw on my Instagram, that the actress Lily James, who plays Pamela Anderson, said that she thinks that this series can shed light on glorifying toxic relationships and invasion of privacy. I thought that was kind of ironic that she said this but yet she thought it was okay to star in a show that was glorifying toxic relationships and did invade someone's privacy. You're probably wondering who could privacy be invading, well that’s pretty simple, Pamela Anderson. Even though Tommy Lee might not even care, in fact it probably just boosted his ego and fame, Pamela has not approved of this show or this moment of her life being shared. This is why I think this shouldn’t be a show people should watch or praise because they are basically bringing up this humiliating moment that I’m pretty sure left Pamela Anderson pretty scarred. What makes this extra invasive is that this series is based on an article written by an investigative journalist named Amanda Chicago Lewis. I’m not saying she is a bad person or that she didn’t do her research; but it is quite messed up that she wrote a story about people she probably didn’t know. Now this isn’t necessarily her fault because it’s not like she hoped that there would be a whole show and if she didn’t write it others would have. The same thing goes for the actors who are in the show because they are just doing to build up their acting resumes or they think it will be a fun project. I think is doe, however, brings up more serious topics: How far is Hollywood willing to go for entertainment and why does it have to be at other people’s expense. It also says something about society and how we view celebrity relationships and power couples. If you were to take a look at the famous, iconic power couples, past or present, you most likely will see that these relationships are not what they seem or appear to be. Some of these relationships are fake, toxic, actually boring, annoying or that there is no real love between the pairs.
