During the recent trip to Nagaland (we'll come to stories about that epic trip soon), A and I picked up a few books written by local authors, and ‘Out of the Woods’ by Neikehienuo Mepfhu-o was one among them. One of the key reasons to pick up the book was the book blurb - there was no tiptoeing around the subject, no promises of happy endings and salvations, no hiding the fact that this could be (and is) a painful read. The book - as is the case with most - has its strong points and a few follies. But it gets a yes from me for the sheer guts it takes to write a book about mental health. Check out the review on the blog; link in bio. #bookstagram #books #ilovebooks #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookblogger #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookgram #didyoureadtoday #outofthewoods #southasianwriters #indianwriters #indianwritinginenglish #nagaland #nagalandwriters #fromthecornertable https://www.instagram.com/p/CqE7ehRP2YJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In No Particular Order
This, is her mother.
The short burly stock-faced woman,
With the brown sturdy shoes.
This, is her father.
The earnest looking man, with the check shirt.
His shrivelled nose, bearing an apology to his chequered temper.
And these, these are her memories
In no particular order.
A bright sunny day in the hillside
Flowers scattered here and there
Then there are the flowers in her hair. In the distance, laughter
A cold gray evening as she waits
While she warms her hollow of her bed
The every day affair. Her ears perked -- listening to the sounds afar. Laughter.
A warm sweaty night sitting on an unhinged chair,
Wafts of cologne drifting in as calling cards,
But, wait, there’s something she can hear…
She stops breathing for moments. Is it? Could it be, laughter?
She couldn’t know for sure, because these were her memories. Memories in no particular order
Perhaps that’s why she didn’t remember him. The visits.
“Shall we move on now?” he said “To matters of more importance.
To matters of significant commerce?”
“Right, right, go on,” said her father.  Looking on dubiously was her mother,
“This is not a tradeoff you see, more like an investment,”
If she does well, you might not have to spare the other two.
And so it began. And so they began.
A train of silhouettes. Of lashes, of new terrains, of love gone every way, of sheets, kinks and beds.
Of new memories and unshaken realities.
Of silences of every girl, held and withheld.

When I Hit You: Or, A Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife is a fictional account by author Meena Kandasamy and echoes with her own experiences of having suffered domestic violence and rape in her marriage. It is an extremely brilliant, fierce, thought-provoking, and courageous work by the author.

One can be a #homemaker by choice or by chance...
But being a homemaker at times can put one through harsh judgements too...
Does only earning adds value to one's identity?...
What if a woman or a man choses to be a homemaker?...
I wrote a poem 'The Homemaker' on the beauty, love and value that a homemaker's life brings to his/her own life and those of others and I am so glad and thankful that it became a part of this beautiful anthology by Tell Me Your Story ... my special thanks to the editor Neil Nagwekar
I dedicate it to all the beautiful homemakers, especially my mother Geetha Chandaran
Do read and review the ebook available on Amazon Kindle... https://www.amazon.in/dp/B09KNX6TQN
