ahh 💖 anon, my favorite anon, i was saving this ask for when i felt a little less terrible but i just realized i'm eating my depression meal for like the tenth day in a row so why not delight a lil in the escapades of kaapo kakko!

the first thing u must know about me is that i do not know anything abt the rangers. i am aware that mika and chris are soulmates and alexis and k'andre are setting themselves up to be boyfriends of the millennia (god speed you beautiful first round draft picks i wish u just the happiest long term relationship.) and ryan reaves is funny and the rangers' collective hate boner for tom wilson is funnier. my knowledge about kaapo kakko is deeply rooted in like, vaguely paternal anxiety. does he have friends?? are his needs getting met?? is he eating three square meals a day and getting his nhl-allocated naps?? maybe you can answer these questions for me 💖 anon, my head hurts so i can't google deepdive atm.

CAVEATS ASIDE, i am thinking, as i often am, of the 2019 draft class, and how...idk isolated kaapo was made to be in it? and how much that really struck me during the run up to the 2019 draft, how the ntdp kids were so close to each other, and all the canadian kids were so friendly, and how so many of europeans draft kids were just...totally outside of that, for reasons due to both xenophobia but also just not playing up in the north americans' grill for their entire high school/juniors careers. and i think a lot about how there was so much abt how jack hughes was going first, but then someone manufactured some "okay but WHAT IF KAAPO WENT FIRST" drama and then i had to see a billion hot takes about who was better, with everyone coming down on the side of jack, which is fine, but also made me feel really bad for kaapo. he prob did not care but /I/ cared, bc i worry about him always.

ANYWAY, i also think frequently of the great kirby dach/jack hughes fic, how could you know what it feels like (to fight the hounds of hell) by lilacdreamers, and how kind jack hughes was in that fic to kaapo? the whole fic is such a gift, but that was one of my favorite parts i think, just his overtures and his kindness toward kaapo. (a kind jack hughes is a underrated jack hughes imho, we all love to make sex jokes and talk about how stupid and silly he is, but i love the idea of him as just a sweet, well-intentioned kid who works hard and tries harder.)

i love people who try hard to be kind. i love people who are given everything on a platter and instead of taking it for granted, they try to give it back. i love a universe in which jack hughes recognizes that he's worked really hard to get where he is, but he's also, to an extent, been given a lot of things, and he tries to do right by that. i also love a high draft pick narrative, so in the fic i just crafted in my head rn, there's a lovely story to be told about two high picks who struggle so much their first couple of years, and how they come out of it.

jack and kaapo were acquaintances in a "same draft class high draft picks" way but they were never friends or even particularly friendly. but jack's innate kindness and desire to do right by the people around him, makes him wants to try again with kaapo, to have a friendly relationship. he knows how fraught their narrative is; he also knows what it's like to be in a franchise that is forever the bridesmaid, never the bride. (or. the devils are kind of. forever the flower girl with dirt on her dress, never the bridesmaid or bride.) he knows what it's like to shoulder a franchise and have everyone be disappointed in you all the time, to be called a draft bust, to be isolated by a team in your first year, to just be horribly alone in the formative year of your career. and he keeps trying to reach out to kaapo and he keeps trying and he keeps trying and it's not even that he wants a date or anything, he just wants to make things right between him and kaapo. he doesn't like the idea of someone thinking poorly of him because media pitted them against each other for a couple months.

meanwhile kaapo, fully in new york strugglesville, is baffled by jack hughes' overtures bc like. they weren't ever friends, they come from two different worlds, why does jack keep texting him, what is the point of all this. but the hopes and dreams of the rangers franchise has been placed on his, alexis', and k'andre's shoulders, and while alexis and k'andre have each other, he thinks he doesn't really have anyone who understands so much what it is like to have that kind of burden on you. but jack does. jack knows. jack's on a good young team and kaapo is kind of surrounded by old men, but jack knows what it is like to have everyone say, this kid went high, it's all on him now, and to completely fail to live up to their expectations immediately.

kaapo wants to live up to expectations! and he will! (i the human author believes this!) but first he's gotta get through his struggle rookie years. and i like to think of him eventually breaking down under jack's persistent overtures to friendship and just texting him one night, while jack's doing so well and he isn't, how did you do it? how did you make it through?

and jack says, i had people to lean on

and that makes kaapo feel like shit bc he is in his long dark night of the soul, so who does he have to lean on? what if i don't have anyone

you have me, if you want

and kaapo lets himself want and then he lets himself have. he responds to jack's text messages more often, smiles at him at face off circles when jack makes goofy faces to throw him off his game. accepts a dinner invitation with jack and his boys one night before a game. he enjoys dinner; he enjoys jack smiling at him longer than the rest, even though he's surrounded by team, as if jack's trying to say, look, you're not alone, you have me. he facetimes jack one time just because he feels a little down and he thinks jack might pick up and cheer him up; jack's in a hot tub and there's music playing in the background like he's at a party, but he talks to kaapo for like a 45 minutes until his battery dies right in the hot tub.

kaapo also lets himself say yes to alexis and k'andre's dinner nights when they invite him. he didn't use to. he lets himself be fussed over by jacob trouba, who is my blorbo stand in for paternal anxiety. he starts to demand attention from the front office and coaching staff -- they're treating him badly and they need to stop. maybe he responds to a concerned text message from esa lindell one time; yes, he's doing better these days, thanks for checking in old man. he starts to play a little better, and a little better, and then it's really good, him and alexis and k'andre tearing shit up.

and jack texts him after games regularly, fucking insane win tonight kk and keep it up bud, i'll see you in the finals and slow your fucking roll kaapo, only one of us can win the cup and sorry about the loss. you wanna come to michigan? my brothers and i got a pool and i've never been to finland but i heard it's cold even in the summer. yeah, i want to visit, when's the best time for you? and i bought my ticket. you better not be lying about how good the lakes are

AND IT IS, bc it's late and i gotta get on with my evening (bed), A VERY TENDER ROMANCE IN THE END, A RELATIONSHIP BUILT ON TRYING AND GROWING AND GIVING UP SELF- AND TEAM-IMPOSED ISOLATION AND LEARNING THAT IT'S OKAY TO DEMAND SPACE AND TO GIVE YOUR HEART TO SOMEONE. and growing comfortable in your skin! and growing comfortable in your game! finding your stride, and proving, after some years, everybody wrong! kaapo finds there's so much more space in people's hearts for him than he thought and he likes that he takes up space in jack's especially. kaapo finds a kind of peace in jack, as goofy and chaotic as he can be. he likes jack, simply put. and that's no small thing.

I. LOVE. THIS. AND I COULDN’T AGREE MORE.

Kay so i really just am so interested in how Billy and Jonathan’s relationship would work. I’ve talked about this before but i absolutely headcanon them as smoking weed together like, weekly at least. They just enjoy the energy of the other and the virtual silence that they’re able to slip into comfortably (i also kind of headcanon Jonathan as being an empath who probably doesn’t know it.)(so like, he’s super affected by different energies)(we don’t have to get into this though)

They don’t really hang out often, but they talk every now and then when they’re at the other’s house and it’s always amicable enough and surprisingly far from awkward. Billy never fucks with Jonathan at school and Jonathan enjoys being invisible for the most part, so he very much appreciates it. Jonathan used to get SUPER nervous about playing music too loud when Billy was over at their house bc he knows the boy is a music fanatic too and doesn’t want to hear any more shitty opinions on his music taste (even though he has some choice words about Billy’s own taste in music). this doesn’t stop Billy from giving Jonathan shit about it though whenever he hears his music playing.

and as they get closer to each other and talk more, Billy gets brattier and more mouthy. He swipes at Jonathan’s hair in front of his face and calls him “Beatle” and asks if he can see through “that curtain”. He taps the boy’s back and tells him to straighten his back out bc “you’re already short enough, you’re losing some valuable inches standing like that.” The first time Billy hears about the extent of the fight he got into w/ Steve (Steve and Jonathan and Nancy are all on good terms at this point, Steve just mentions it in passing as a joke), Billy puts Jonathan in a headlock and ruffles his hair and asks about the “fighter” in him.

but Billy is never hard w/ Jonathan, necessarily, bc he knows Jonathan has dealt w/ shit. Jonathan doesn’t have a dad around. Will nearly died and in fact was said to have died like, less than 2 years ago. They had a fucking funeral for him and everything. He had to watch a crazy as fuck monster possess his brother. Their family is poor and struggling and Jonathan works hard as fuck, way harder than a teenager should, so Billy knows the boy is tired and doesn’t need to be given more reasons to be. Plus, Jonathan is pretty damn passive during every encounter of theirs; he just takes it and gives Billy a tired but ultimately amused huff.

When Joyce and Hop get married and Jonathan and Billy officially become brothers, they get even closer. They smoke and talk more. They share similar music tastes like Bowie and Queen. they talk about relationships and sexuality and little siblings and shitty parents and… pretty great ones. They have long talks out in the woods around their house and they sit in the cold and smoke joints and Billy puts Jonathan in a headlock like, once a week with the excuse of “keeping you on your toes, John Boy!” When Jonathan is feeling a little less passive, he’ll pull at a curl on Billy’s head that’s noticeably longer than the others and say “Your mullet has a tail” or “your mullet’s tail is looking a little ragged, I think you missed it w/ your hairspray”

They make weird jokes that aren’t funny to anyone else and they laugh muted quiet laughs that would probably confuse anyone other than them and then Jonathan’s car breaks down and Billy drives him to school while they’re trying to figure out what’s up with it.

It’s then that Billy notices people fucking w/ Jonathan.

Bc he just doesn’t hang out w/ Jonathan at school. They leave each other alone bc that’s what they prefer from each other. That’s just the relationship they have.

But as Billy is waiting in his car, singing along to Zeppelin, he sees Jonathan walking up, followed by a few guys he’s never seen before. He figures it’s just Jonathan’s friends when he notices one of the boys reach out to grab at Jonathan’s bag strap. Another one tries to knock the books out of his hands. Billy flares up immediately bc who the fuck are these guys and what are they doing to his brother?

He gets out of the car, walking around to greet the group right as they’re talking about Jonathan being a “drugged out freakazoid” who’s “probably queer and just using Nancy as a beard.”

Billy leans up against the Camaro and clears his throat, fully ready to throw hands.

“Hey, assholes. What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”

And the boys are very clearly freaked, but they try to keep it cool.

“Oh, you need Hargrove to come to your rescue-?”

“Hey.” Billy demands, smacking his gum in the most intimidating manner possible. “It’s Hopper, dipshit. And either you shut the fuck up or I kick your teeth in. Your choice.”

The boys grumble, and nearly run away. Jonathan has his head down, trying to slink his way into the Camaro while Billy asks:

“Do they always fuck with you like that?”

“C’mon, as if you didn’t know-”

Billy doesn’t like that answer. He grabs Jonathan’s wrist before he can open the door and gives him a serious as hell look.

“Hey. I didn’t.”

Jonathan pauses for a second before rolling his eyes w/ a small sigh and getting into the car, but the conversation is far from over.

“I’m serious, how many dickwads are saying that shit to you?”

“It doesn’t matter?” Jonathan says it like a question.

“Except it does. They shouldn’t be doing that-”

“I know you think you care but-”

“Shut the fuck up, Jonathan.” Billy is adamant but not harsh. “You’re my brother now, alright? We’re family. And that means I’m not letting dick wipes like that treat you that way. You don’t deserve that shit.”

Jonathan doesn’t know what to say but he gives out another sigh and looks out the window and thinks about when Billy didn’t care to get involved w/ Jonathan’s life and how much simpler it was then. but how this feels a tiny bit warm so maybe it’s fine.

And the following day at school, and for the rest of the week, and then the rest of the month, and then the rest of the year, Billy starts hanging out with Jonathan at school. When Jonathan isn’t w/ Nancy, of course, bc no one fucks w/ Jonathan when Nancy is around. But sometimes she can’t be there, so Billy takes her place in those times.

And at first it kinda feels like a duty; like he’s Jonathan’s body guard and Jonathan hates it. It feels like even more of a target on his back. Billy fucking walks him to class and to his locker and to his car and to lunch and will even sit w/ him at lunch if Nancy can’t. like, just imagine Billy strutting down the hall next to quiet, small Jonathan, fucking snarling at anyone who dares to give Jonathan a mean look. It’s just???? Weird and exhausting and Jonathan wants to be left alone.

But eventually, it becomes a lot more normal. Bc eventually, they become actual friends. They’re talking about concerts they wish they could see and the homework from last night and that new music video that was on MTV over the weekend. They talk about books and good weed and even better alcohol that Billy is always trying to convince Jonathan to try but that Jonathan keeps refusing bc he doesn’t really drink.

And Billy used to leave when Nancy would come by, but he’s started talking to her more and more and now they talk about the books they had to read for class and really, it’s just Nancy giving Billy the plot bc Billy was too anxious to sit and read it. But Nancy eventually ends up forcing Billy to read his own books and they actually have pretty in depth debates on the ethics of the characters. And then, when Tommy and Carol are being dicks, Billy will find a home at Nancy and Jonathan’s table for lunch where they talk about what the next John Hughes movie might be or how that episode of Family Ties was last week and what the new one will be tomorrow and no one fucks w/ Jonathan again and if they try to Billy growls at them and Jonathan is T i r e d but he’s tired w/ a smile and that’s all Billy needs.

Bc now he doesn’t feel bad about flicking Jonathan’s arm and goading him to “work out, you look like a twig.” with that smarmy smirk that makes Jonathan so exhausted

Average hours of sleep: I have insomnia so I’m often up late at night and then crashing at odd hours throughout the day. It’s hard to say, but I think it ranges between 3 to 6 hours, but typically more in the 4 to 5 range?

Lucky number: lol not a lucky person in general so I don’t really have a lucky number. I do like 6, 7, and 16 though?

Instruments: I’ve been playing piano for TEN years bc my parents had to be stereotypically Asian.

What am I wearing: My pajamas and what my family teasingly calls my Hugh Hefner robe.

Dream job: fHahah, I have no idea what I want to do with my life, but if this is non-realistic, I would love to be paid to do fun activities or other things that I love like playing games, eating, or traveling (lol my lazy behavior shining through rn)

Dream trip: Traveling around the whole world in a cruise! I’ll have to admit that was the only part of RoE that I liked- the concept of being in a large group that gave you planned activities and fine dining while also traveling around to see and experience different cultures.

Fave food: I’m in love with desserts. I have a MAJOR sweet tooth, and if my friends ever lose me at an all-you-can-eat buffet, you can bet that they’d find me at the dessert section (or alternatively, seafood). You want me to do something? Offer me chocolates and I’ll give you my soul lol. If we’re talking about specific cuisines though, I love Asian (Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese), Italian, French, and American (bc I can’t resist french fries, burgers, and milk shakes)

Top three fictional universes I want to join: Harry Potter, DC Universe (not the movies though lol) or really any setting with established superpowers and vigilantes, and uhhmmm…idk, a lot of the fictional universes I can think of right now are dystopian so…no.
