VERY late to the party but here’s my piece for @hilda-appreciation-week Day 2 - Favourite Episode - STONE FOREST BABEYY

hmm I was gonna talk a little about why I love this episode so much but it got kind of long so that’s going under a cut lol

ok so this would’ve been a really tough one for me to choose, if it weren’t for the fact that Stone Forest has had a very special place in my heart right from the moment I picked up the comic in 2018 and spent the next 2 yrs hoping I’d see it in the show. since that was pretty much my introduction to the comics and it was a hilda story that was yet to feature in the show it was just. so much fun. the art style of the comic is wonderful and a joy to look at and I would argue that pre-Mountain King it was the first comic to show a bit more dimension to Johanna and really have her along for the adventure, and I love it for that so much

I was so hyped to see this episode when season 2 dropped, and imo they adapted the story perfectly. I admire how the writers adjusted the story of the comic to fit into the show with all the changes they’d made, making the same conflict work with a slightly different Hilda-Johanna dynamic in the show, and how they made room in the story for the supporting characters who aren’t in the comic so much (even if that meant they got rid of my boy the stray sod to have hilda’s friends there instead 🥲 it's fine I snuck him into the bg of this drawing bc he’s still there. in my heart). Anyway I love this ep, I loved seeing how my fave comic moments made it onto the screen while also getting the completely new B plot with Frida, David, Gerda etc. I also really really love that the story being animated meant they had room to expand on some smaller moments in the comic and make them more emotional and nuanced (the part where they try to sleep behind a rock and Johanna thinks about reaching out to Hilda before giving up comes to mind…love little additions like that which take advantage of the medium!!!) also they had Johanna do cool stuff like tell a troll to get lost to its face so in conclusion this episode was made for me specifically and I just think it’s such a treat :D

Would you mind explaining your Arts and the crafts au? I’m interested

IM SO SORRY THIS ANSWER IS SO LATE BUT HERES THE RUNDOWN LOL

basically it started with me just imagining the show but with certain things that bothered me omitted or changed to fit my preferences, then i started incorporating some elements/characters from the games, and then it just evolved into a whole au with a plotline LOL! the characters i chose to include feel really random and unrelated when i just list them out but i promise there was SOME kinda logic to it,,, probably just jokes that were made between me and my qpp that i just decided to include for real lol! obviously theres adeline and ribbon (whos designs ive already posted here), but they come into play way later in the story lol. the main people i added are prince fluff, gooey, dark matter blade, drawcia, yin-yarn, and zero. queen ripple is also here too but she plays a pretty minor role lol.

it takes place pretty soon after the anime, specifically during the rebuilding of cappy town after it was destroyed in the finale. basically, drawcia shows up with gooey and dmb (they are her sons) and yin yarn shows up with fluff (his doll son he brought to life with magic). yin and drawcia meet and eventually get together because theyre both strange and offputting (affectionate). the name "arts and the craft" actually is a reference to them, since "arts and crafts" could be a term used for both knitting and painting, and "the craft" is a term used for magic :3! pretty soon after they arrive, weird stuff starts happening around town and its discovered that 3 girlies were sent to cappy town to generally cause a commotion. these girls are the 3 dark matter sisters that appear in kirby 64 (aka the ones that possess waddle dee, adeline, and ddd in-game)! later zero shows up and i thought it would be really funny if i just made him like the most divorced guy ever so hes literally just here to get drawcia back LOL??? she says no of course so he gets real mad and a fight breaks out. our heroes win of course and boom thats the plot babeyy!!! i was also gonna have some character arcs going on in the background of all of this (like ddd becoming a slightly better person, escargoon figuring out how to hate his life a little less, meta knight fully coming to terms with his past and healing from it, etc.) but thats the gist of things :3! looking back at my drafts and stuff i think its a bit too serious at times so if i decide to work on it again im definitely easing up on the drama LOL!

really the most pressing thing to me was. being really frustrated about garmadon’s whole arc at the end of tournament of elements. yknow when misako finds out about the letter. i feel like they didn’t really go into depth about RESOLVING that whole thing, like showing the repercussions and thoughts of all parties involved after the fact? how does this affect their family? i suppose misako and lloyd talked about it during day of the departed, kind of? but. my needy ass just goes “IT WASN’T ENOUGH.” really, i don’t really like character death or sacrifice as the resolution to a conflict or arc unless it’s done really well, and. is this supposed to feel unsatisfying?! because it is to me!!

yes. i know it’s a kids show. its super likely something's going over my head right now, but. it really made me think again because misako and garmadon didn’t really even talk after harumi revived his oni side, and especially after all the interactions lloyd and garmadon had during crystallized. seriously, someone rec me fics that explore misako and garmadon talking post tournament of elements please JDKWNFJSND. and really i didn’t hate the resolution of tournament of elements... this is my single major nitpick about it LOL

continuing with that thought, like. lloyd has lost his dad multiple times... this isn’t fair to him!!! give bro a break!!! (silly) (i know its fiction LOL) honestly why doesn’t he have WORSE trust issues after considering his mom and harumi and all the other people who’ve abandoned slash betrayed him?! and yeah misako really is the least terrible offender here, and i’m not blaming her— but ya can’t ignore that it DID affect him. this is why i was really excited for the prospect of a corruption arc for him during crystallized, however brief. he deserves it! let him destroy a few buildings, maybe kill a guy! let him fulfill his rise of the serpentine dreams, but for real this time! again REC ME FICS RAGHH

heck like. this is why i was really excited for the ice emperor because i KNEW that was zane the moment i saw him LMAO. he’s my favorite character how can i not tell. but in the end he just lost his memories and was being manipulated by some other bad guy... same thing goes for possession, lloyd wasn’t the bad guy, it was morro possessing him... its not the same </3 let them be lead astray even WITH their past memories and relationships and feelings... i need the angst... (you can tell im insane because im saying this about a lego show)

anyways point is. i like corruption arcs. and i WILL write fic about the ice emperor gaining more agency no matter how out of character and detached from the original message it is. (even sillier connotation)

okay thats the end of me nitpicking for now, i think. i mean i have a lot of qualms... esp about wu characterization in the new animation studio half, but. thats one thing i know that has been talked abt AT LENGTH. and idk if this is an unpopular opinion but i liked all da seasons for different reasons, they all appeal to my different happy little facets of media i enjoy :) im still fresh off of watching the show again for the first time in forever so this opinion will probably change, who knows.

really im just happy to have gone thru the whole main series! including wu's teas! not including dragons rising tho. ill get around to that after this. and maybe look into more production and behind the scenes stuff, and the games and supplementary content too. i love consuming content 🥰

Vulon: Vulon would like a very strong spiced Chai sweetened with honey

Sethsa: Hot apple cider! I don't know when I decided Sethsa loves apples but that's been in my brain about her for a While now lol

I usually prefer cold drinks but sometimes some nice, fresh coffee with creamer, milk, honey, and sugar is Exactly what I need to cheer me up. I'm also a big fan of Chai as well !

3) What is something they really like about themselves and what is something you really like about them?

Vulon: It quite likes its hair! It's very proud of it in fact :} I really like how determined it is to survive everything thrown at it.

Vulon: It loves that its friends have its back. That they care for it and aren't afraid to show that. I think Vulon's friends would like that it's loyal and tries it's hardest to make a positive impact on their lives somehow.

Sethsa: She'd like that they care about her (and that they don't go telling everyone she's a Nocturnal Demiprince lmao). I think they'd like how much she's willing to do to ensure they're safe.

Vulon: Can I be corny and say Lord Boethiah? Or like...spending time with them? Because that would be Vulon's favorite thing I think (or just spending time with Any of its loved ones, tbh).

Sethsa: Traveling at night! She loves the sounds of night time and how peaceful it is. Yes it can be quite dangerous but she can get around a lot easier in the night than in the day.

i dont like espresseleine. id even go so far as to say that i kinda hate it. like i get why people like it, they were two early characters that have always been shown together (and lowkey baited by the devs themselves lmao) but i just.... i cant see them with each other in any context. espresso cant stand even the sight of light magic, and he has holier-than-thou complex about literally everything, while madeleine is way too dense and full of himself. they work as friends in comedic situations (what with espresso always being exasperated at the thought of working with madeleine) but nothing more for me tbh.

this all isnt to mention how this community has a terrible tunnel-vision shipping problem where there is next to no content of two characters interacting outside the lens of shipping. there's literally so much espresseleine content that it gets hard to avoid it and i get kinda sick of seeing it sometimes. oversaturation always makes me hate super popular ships in fanbases (which is why i often find myself loving rarepairs so much -- when there's so little content of a pairing, it makes it all the more exciting to see it out in the wild) (tbh this is also kinda happening with wildchip (i actually like that pairing) but guys!!! there's so much about these characters on their own without pairing them together!!! they dont need to be in a relationship with each other to be interesting god dammit!!!!!)

btw if youre an espresseleine enjoyer all the more power to ya! make these bastards kiss as much as you want. fandom is fun because its an open world sandbox and you've got cheats turned on babeyy

Ever since of their recent paranormal expeditions, proto had been... acting odd...MA didnt know what happened, ma had blacked out and must have missed what happened, but MA was worried. MA knocked on protos apartment door, they lived in separate apartments but in the same building.

"Hey, P. You in there? You good?"

Proto qpproached MA from scorps apartment, scorp looked HORRIBLE. Scorps hair was disheveled and scorps eyes had this look of pure horror.

"Oh...hi M, yea im good just having the world allergic reaction ever...thats all"

"I-its nothin...how about you- didnt ya pass out?"

"Proto i get youre worried about me but thats not relevant right now...you look like-"

"ALRIGHT HAVE A GOOD DAY BYE!"

Proto slammed the door closed. Very out of character for scorp. Usually scorp would chat with ma for hours on hours if scorp could, they were best friends and had been for years ever since MA had moved to nevada.

Ma didnt really try to press the issue further, and left to go call any of protos other friends to see if this was something that had happened before

MA went to go check up on proto again, knocking on scorps apartment door.

No answer

Ma kept knocking, effectively punching the door to no response. Luckily ma and proto had eachothers apartment keys just in case something happened. Or one of them wanted to scare the other.

Ma barged into protos apartment to find...

"Wh- what the - fuck...FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!!!"

Proto was dead. Blood staining the roght side of one of the rooms in the apartment.

Ma stood there in shock, not noticing the spectre forming behind ma until-

"...uhm...ma. what are you doing in my apartmen-"

"JESUS!!!"

And yea ...proto is a ghost now i guess.

I've been slowly processing some of the inane (and some of the more insightful) discourse on queer identities and labels and figured some things out. consider these my views/interpretations extrapolated from half of tumblr and twitter yelling at each other over labels and micro identities, and both platforms yelling at queertok (?) for dredging 2014 arguments back up. I don't speak for everyone but I'm interested in what people think

labels, labels, labels

microidentities and microlabels are constantly expanding, and the main arguments against them seem to be either over where the 'limit' is on what needs labelling, or lgbtq folk who wish to assimilate and are worried about being 'unpalatable' to allocishet culture.

the main arguments for them seem to be finding likeminded people to form a community over specific shared experiences, and that the point of smashing the gender binary and the expectations of sexual and romantic attraction in a particular way is to encourage freedom, and that gatekeeping labels and identities defeats that.

language, laypeople, and learning

it's no secret that wider society has its problems understanding more well-known facets of queerness. cis gays and lesbians are misrepresented and misunderstood a lot, homophobia is still present as is transphobia, and bisexuality is often treated as a joke or erased entirely.

trying to explain what being a genderfluid aceflux sapphic is to your average allocishet person is an uphill battle. neopronouns are similarly off their radar (though neos should be addressed separately as they work differently to umbrella vs specific labels. there's no excuse for intentionally using wrong pronouns).

so, here comes the language part! there are the terms *restricted code* and *elaborated code* in linguistics which refer to explicit communication and context within language. a restricted code assumes prior context (eg knowledge of particular colloquialisms, codewords, injokes etc.) whereas an elaborated code is self-contained. there is often a modal switch with elaborated code being more formal.

while labels like librafeminine are specific, they're essentially queer jargon. this, for me, is where umbrella terms come in. teach these and now you have a basic understanding that can be communicated. you also have a point from which more nuanced identities can be explained.

labels are personal, and the more specific the label the more it's about personal expression imo. umbrella terms do the heavy lifting of communicating the basic concept to others. the more general the label, the more general the concept but the more communicable it is.
