Top Travel Destinations in the South
Tumblr media
In January 2023, Travel + Leisure and CNN Travel compiled their annual list of top travel destinations for the year. Unsurprisingly, a number of US cities made the list of top destinations. Of the chosen cities, six were in the American South.
Two of the cities named were in the Carolinas. The January 2023 issue of CNN Travel reported that one vacation destination well worth visiting was Charleston, South Carolina. Noteworthy destinations include the Spoleto Festival and the International African American Museum, expected to open in June 2023.
Held in March, the Spoleto Festival hosts theatrical, dance, opera, and musical acts at a range of venues. The International African American Museum offers visitors the chance to tour places where Africans arrived during the slave trade. Visitors can also tour exhibitions that describe the lives of enslaved people and their descendants.
Charleston also has something for those who enjoy dining out. Food lovers can hang out at the Charles Wine and Food Festival in March. Alternatively, visitors can experience the upscale establishment Magnolia's. For a less formal night out there is Bertha's Kitchen, where visitors can try its famous red rice with sausage, fried chicken, and lima beans.
Asheville, North Carolina, is the other city that made the top destination list in the Carolinas. Travel + Leisure reports the town offers a well-rounded vacation destination. Here, tourists can partake in year-round outdoor activities, explore the city's historic sites, and enjoy sophisticated dining spots.
For example, those who like white water rafting can visit Wrong Way River Lodge, where they can stay in A-frame cabins sitting along the French Broad River. Those who want to camp comfortably can stay at AutoCamp Asheville, which will open in mid-2023. The Glamping Collective is another newly opened establishment on a 160-acre site, where visitors can stay in glass cabins and domed pods.
Essential dining establishments include the S&W Market, a food hall offering a wide array of cuisines. French Broad Chocolates and Battery Park Book Exchange are old favorites, the former offering confections and the latter a chance to sip Champagne while enjoying a good read.
Just north of these two states, Alexandria, Virginia, provides tourists with easy access to vineyards in the northern part of the state and the chance to learn more about its history. The city was home to the country's largest domestic slave trade during much of the 1800s.
Sites such as the Freedom House Museum tell the narrative of Africans forced to work as enslaved people. Furthermore, the African American Heritage Trail, which opened in 2020, features 11 historical sites narrating 200 years of African American experiences, including stops at the Torpedo Factory, where Black people worked during WWII, and Waterfront Park, a point known for it slave trafficking. Jones Park is another significant landmark where visitors can learn about Benjamin Banneker, a notable mathematician, inventor, and free man who was instrumental in surveying the new U.S. capital.
Another American favorite, Nashville, Tennessee, is in the middle of a renaissance. The Conrad, 1 Hotel, Soho House, and redesigned Hermitage House are a few of the hotels fueling this rebirth. Regarding good places to dine, visitors can head to Fifth + Broadway Complex, where they can enjoy Southern staples such as fried chicken at Hattie B's or the Assembly Food Hall, which offers varied eating establishments and bars.
In terms of nightlife, travelers can get their fill of honky-tonk bars until the wee hours of the morning. They can also head to Justin Timberlake's Twelve Thirty Club or live events, such as CMA Fest (Country Music Association Festival), which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
For travelers looking to entertain the entire family, Central Florida offers various theme parks, such as Disney World, Epcot, and Universal City Walk, the latter offering adults a sampling of Orlando nightlife. Travelers to Disney this year can eat, breathe, and sleep Star Wars at its newly opened Star Wars: Galactic Star Cruiser, a two-night adventure. Another option is to travel southeast to Tampa and spend the day at Busch Gardens, an amusement park experience with a tropical theme.

Facing Back Surgery, Tom Johnston to Miss at Least Some of Doobie Brothers’ 50th-anniversary Tour
- Guitarist, co-founder “should not be performing at this time,” band says
Facing surgery to address “severe back pain,” Tom Johnston has opted out of at least part of the Doobie Brothers’ 50th-anniversary tour, the “heartbroken” band said in a statement.
“Per advisement of his physician, Johnston should not be performing at this time and is looking forward to returning to the road as soon as possible,” the statement read.
Johnston will not be replaced and there is no timetable for his return. The North American tour, which begins May 25 and stretches into October, will instead feature Johnston’s fellow co-founder Pat Simmons; Michael McDonald, who replaced Johnston in the 1970s; and John McFee, who joined the band toward the end of its original run.
“I would like to thank Pat, Michael, John and the entire Doobie Brothers band for covering for me while I recover …,” Johnston said in a news release.

Time for your Rock Report
Nita Strauss is returning to Alice Cooper's band for his 2023 tour, Cooper's management has disclosed. The Alice Cooper North American tour, with an all-new show dubbed "Too Close For Comfort," kicks off in late April in Michigan and continues through late September. The trek includes a handful of August stadium shows with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, followed by a co-headlining late summer "Freaks On Parade" tour with Rob Zombie. "She's Back!" Cooper said. "Nita asked for a leave of absence to work with someone else, something I always encourage my band members to do. I like them to challenge themselves and try new things. I'm thankful to my old friend Kane Roberts for stepping up and filling in for her, but she'll be back with us for the new tour that starts up in late April. It's going to be great to have her back. The top-rated guitarist had been with Cooper for several years until she departed to do a Fall 2022 tour with Demi Lovato.
Peter Gabriel has announced details of the long-awaited North American leg of "i/o - The Tour," a 2023 run across Europe and North America this spring and fall. Gabriel will perform in Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Fans should also stay tuned for future tour date announcements in Washington, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Denver, Austin, Dallas and Houston. "i/o - The Tour" will see Gabriel playing new material from his forthcoming album i/o, as well as delving into his catalogue of music.
Roger Waters recently shared a snippet of music from his re-recorded version of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, which celebrated its 50th anniversary on March 1. Waters shared a 52-second clip on YouTube, showing him listening to the first verse of a reworked "Us and Them" in the studio. He also posted a lengthy description of the project, which does not feature his former bandmates. "We are now in the process of finishing the final mix. It's turned out really great and I'm excited for everyone to hear it. It's not a replacement for the original which, obviously, is irreplaceable," Waters said. "But it is a way for the 79-year-old man to look back across the intervening 50 years into the eyes of the 29-year-old and say, to quote a poem of mine about my father, 'We did our best, we kept his trust, our Dad would have been proud of us.'"
He added, "And also it is a way for me to honour a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave and I have every right to be very proud of."

Roxy Music’s 50th Anniversary : 2022 Reunion Tour
Tumblr media
In order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their 1972 debut album, Roxy Music announced a North American and European tour earlier this year. St. Vincent will serve as the opening act for that trip, which is scheduled to stop at numerous arenas. At Toronto's Scotiabank Arena, the group's most recent tour began. Glam rock royalty Roxy Music was founded in 1970, and the band's first breakup occurred in 1983. The group has since reformed on a few occasions, with their most recent tour taking place in 2011. Roxy Music hadn't performed live for ten years prior to Friday night, with the exception of a brief reunion at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2019. Longtime leader Bryan Ferry, guitarist Phil Manzanera, multi-instrumentalist Andy Mackay, and drummer Paul Thompson, who didn't play with the group during the Hall of Fame reunion, are all part of the current tour. Another former leader of Roxy Music, Brian Eno, is not now participating because he has other things going on. Roxy Music doesn't sound like a band that has been off the road for more than ten years in the footage from the recent Toronto performance. The band will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of its debut album throughout 2022 with a vinyl reissue series that will see reissues of all eight of its studio albums. The tour also coincides with the anniversary. Recently (September 19), when the pop-rock band Roxy Music performed at Chicago's United Center with a large touring band backing them, they still had a lush, layered sound. Watch some of the show's footage down below also check out the music list they performed as well. https://youtu.be/inlfeTuthMM SETLIST: 01 “Re-Make/Re-Model” 02 “Out Of The Blue” 03 “The Bogus Man” 04 “Ladytron” 05 “While My Heart Is Still Beating” 06 “Oh Yeah” 07 “To Turn You On” 08 “If There Is Something” 09 “In Every Dream Home A Heartache” 10 “Tara” 11 “The Main Thing” 12 “Dance Away” 13 “My Only Love” 14 “More Than This” 15 “Avalon” 16 “Same Old Scene” 17 “Love Is the Drug” 18 “Do The Strand” 19 “Editions Of You” 20 “Jealous Guy” (John Lennon cover) https://youtu.be/f9s-k3jGKKU Before arriving in the UK in October, the band will play a hit-filled performance of some of the most iconic songs in rock'n'roll history over the course of 10 arena shows across North America. Jimmy Cobb obituary
By John Fordham
Jazz drummer who continued to perform for half a century after recording Kind of Blue with Miles Davis
There are sublime moments in music that only the cognoscenti notice, plenty that millions love, and some that many sense without quite knowing why. Kind of Blue, the 1959 recording led by Miles Davis, had enough of all of them to become the bestselling jazz album ever.
Jimmy Cobb, the drummer and last surviving member of that landmark session, who has died aged 91, was not just a crucial contributor to a jazz revolution unleashed by it, but the instigator of a split-second playing choice on one of its best known themes that seems to define the here-and-gone magic of the best of jazz.
Cobb’s magic moment on So What, Kind of Blue’s opening track, was the quintessence of perfect timing and the definition of his receptive musical character. The tune’s setup seems to suggest at first that the music has nowhere to go, with the pianist, Bill Evans, apparently lost in preoccupied reflections around a slowly shifting three-chord motif with the bassist, Paul Chambers.
Evans then implies he has found a route out, thickening the chord harmonies before Chambers brings in the tune’s famously catchy bass hook, while Cobb ticks off a quiet pulse with a cymbal sound like someone idly shaking a bag of loose change, and Davis and the saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley repeat a minimally simple rising and falling two-note hook.
Then Davis hangs out a single sustained note as if dangling it over a long drop, resolves it with an answer an octave beneath and Cobb breaks into a disruptive drum hustle and a cymbal smash as the trumpeter’s solo eases into swing, and such a captivating improvised trumpet solo that composers have since transcribed it for performance as if it had been laboured over note by note.
Cobb was to react instinctively to situations like that all his working life. That moment was not fortuitous for him, but the obvious option at the time for the astute 30 year-old percussion accompanist who had already partnered the vocal-toned R&B saxophonist Earl Bostic, the gospel-rooted and pop-savvy singer Dinah Washington , and Davis partners including pianist Wynton Kelly and Adderley. Those connections taught Cobb the patience to wait for the turning moment – in jazz, usually unscripted – of a soloist’s entry, the drive to power a blues, and much more.
Born in Washington, Jimmy was the son of Wilbur Cobb, a security guard and taxi driver, and his wife Katherine (nee Bivens), a domestic worker. As a teenager in the mid-1940s he became obsessed with jazz, staying up at night to listen to the American wartime DJ Symphony Sid’s broadcasts and washing dishes in diners to save money for a drumkit – on which he aimed to learn the polyrhythmic innovations of the bebop drum gurus Max Roach and Kenny Clarke. Largely self-taught, though he briefly studied with the National Symphony Orchestra percussionist Jack Dennett, Cobb had accompanied Billie Holiday in Washington and partnered Charlie Parker and Davis on Symphony Sid’s roadshow before he was 20.
By 1950, he was on the road with Bostic, whose hit-making R&B band of the period included such jazz-sax luminaries as Coltrane, Benny Golson, and Stanley Turrentine. Cobb and Kelly then accompanied Washington for some years, a period in which Cobb was having a relationship with her, and a young Quincy Jones was writing some of the singer’s arrangements.
The drummer’s antennae were retuned by the musical differences between his own Catholic background and Washington’s Baptist one. “When I heard that Baptist sound, it took me over,” Cobb later told the jazzwax.com’s blogger Marc Myers. “I wasn’t used to hearing that. It would make the hairs stand up on my arms and neck, where people are singing and shouting in church. That struck me right away. She taught me to put the passion into what I was doing.”
In 1956, Adderley hired Cobb to play on his Verve Records sessions Sophisticated Swing, Quintet In Chicago and Takes Charge, with the latter two staffed by the Miles Davis band without the trumpeter. Those connections led via brief stints with Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie to Kind of Blue, though Davis’s work in the period following ran on different tracks, with Coltrane and subsequently Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock exploring more modally stripped-down, scale-based music rather than the songlike forms Cobb had experienced with Bostic and Washington.
Cobb and Kelly played with the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery between 1962 and 1965, formed a trio with Kind of Blue bassist Paul Chambers that recorded with guitarist Kenny Burrell, and from 1970 to 1978 the drummer partnered the operatically eloquent vocalist Sarah Vaughan. He worked thereafter with many leading younger musicians of the postbop generation including sometime Miles Davis saxophonist David Liebman, trumpeter Art Farmer, and pianists Kenny Drew and John Hicks.
Cobb taught in summer schools in Europe organised by Duke University, North Carolina, and for the New School for Social Research. New York, in the 1980s, worked regularly with Adderley’s cornetist brother Nat, and toured and recorded regularly in the US and Europe in the following decade.
Drawing from his New School student connections among others, Cobb formed the quartets and quintets he called Cobb’s Mob in 1998, performing and recording with them into the 21st century in lively postbop lineups including a young Brad Mehldau, the composer-guitarist Peter Bernstein, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, and the Marsalis family patriarch, the pianist Ellis Marsalis.
On the 50th anniversary of Kind of Blue, an 80 year-old Cobb memorably went to the UK with a group including the uncannily Miles-like trumpeter Wallace Roney and the saxophonists Javon Jackson and Vincent Herring – spurring those timeless themes with his old lazily springy dynamism, even if the renditions might have been a little lighter and funkier for some.
In June 2008, he received the Don Redman Heritage award from Michigan State University, and the following year a National Endowment for the Arts NEA Jazz Masters award. Cobb continued to perform and teach, aided by his wife, Eleana Tee (nee Steinberg), and daughters Serena and Jaime, all of whom survive him. He had previously been married to Ann Porter, who died in 1987.
He was often asked for the secrets of his light and buoyant drum sound and hair-trigger reflexes, but he had no magic formula. “The first thing is they have to love it” was his advice.
• Jimmy (James Wilbur) Cobb, drummer, born 20 January 1929; died 24 May 2020

Silver Silver STAR! or, the 25th Anniversary of the 25th Anniversary!
Twenty five years ago this week, the 1968 Julie Andrews musical Star! made its long overdue return to the screens of the world –– at least, the small screens –– when the film was finally released to home video on 17 November 1993. Billed as “the return of a lost classic,” the heavily-promoted 25th Anniversary release was the first time in decades that the complete version of Star! had been widely available and it marked a watershed in the film’s latter-day recuperation (Edwards, 1993).
Director Robert Wise long remained haunted by the commercial and critical failure of Star!. "I’ve had films that haven’t paid off,” he lamented, “but Star! was my biggest disappointment because I think it’s a better film and more of an achievement than was acknowledged by the mass audience” (Leeman: 195). The film had cultivated a small but devoted band of fans over the years, many of whom sent appreciative letters to the director, but Wise continued to hope that Star! might yet find broader vindication and shake off its unjust reputation as “the H-bomb of musicals” (Kanfer: 78).
In 1984, amidst a growth in popularity of classic film revivals, Twentieth Century-Fox struck a new print of Star! for release to the repertory house circuit (Edwards 1990). It was the first time the full roadshow version of Star! had been seen in North America since 1968 and, while it mainly screened in niche metropolitan revival houses, it played to hugely enthusiastic audiences. Attending a New York screening in August 1990, Robert Wise recalled that Star! “went over like gangbusters...The audience applauded after every number and gave me and the film such a hand” (Thompson: 96). Meanwhile, general interest in Star! continued to grow. In 1990, an article on the history of the film appeared in Movie Collector’s World (Edwards 1990). And in May 1992, Premiere magazine nominated Star! as its “most wanted” title on home video (”Widescreen”: 85).
Emboldened by the groundswell of support, Robert Wise approached Fox about remastering a version of Star! for home video and all agreed the time was ripe. The director personally supervised a new transfer from the original 65mm negative and six-track magnetic soundtrack source materials which had happily remained intact in the Fox vaults. The remastered version of Star! screened for the first time on the respected cable network, American Movie Classics in early-1993 (Edwards 1993). Reviewing the AMC broadcast for the Los Angeles Times, Kevin Thomas called Star! “one of the most under appreciated of all Hollywood major productions,” praising the film as "engrossing...and played stunningly by Julie Andrews” (6).
Throughout 1993, Wise and Fox continued to finalise preparations for the film’s video release. The deluxe two-tape set was officially launched on 16 November 1993 (’street date’: 17 November) with a special Silver Anniversary screening of Star! at the DGA Theatre in Hollywood. Attended by many of the original cast and crew –– including Julie Andrews, Richard Crenna, Robert Wise, Saul Chaplin, and Michael Kidd –– the screening was a happy reunion cum symbolic homecoming for the film. Star! is “finally back where it belongs” said Julie in a warm interview at the event (“Silver Star!”).
The film’s soundtrack, which had also been long out of print, was given a companion release to CD and cassette by Fox Records on 23 November. With the inclusion of two previously unreleased tracks –– the extended version of the title song  by Julie and Daniel Massey’s “Forbidden Fruit” –– and featuring a handsome booklet with liner notes by T.J. Edwards –– a veritable one-man cheer squad for Star! during these years –– the CD soundtrack re-release further cemented the aura of rediscovery around the film and the sense that, after decades of neglect, Star! could finally be seen and heard in its original splendour (Sanello: D5; Thomas, B: 14).
And this time round US critics were much more receptive than most had been back in 1968. Reviewing the video release for the Los Angeles Times, Sue Martin called it “a handsome period production [that] holds up with Andrews in a tour de force portrayal as the earthy, tenacious Lawrence” (44). Martie Zad of The Washington Post dubbed it “one of filmdom’s grandest musicals”, saying “[i]t is a treat to watch and listen to Andrews whose voice at this point in her career was simply pure and magical” (N5). Dave Staten of the Daily News enthused:
“Star! is bouncy and fast-paced and much better that I expected. You see, I was one of this people who was scared away in 1968 by the bad notices. This grand movie deserves a new life on video” (26).
In response to the fulsome reception, Fox green-lighted an even more ambitious ‘special edition’ release of Star! on laserdisc, a kind of top-end precursor to DVD and the home cinephile’s medium of choice in the 90s. An impressively weighty package –– literally, as those big old discs were heavy as rocks –– the laserdisc edition was spread over two discs presented in a lavish gatefold album. It was jam-packed with special features, including a detailed production history, rare behind-the scenes images, a lively audio commentary by Wise and other members of the production team, and a charming featurette about the film’s 25th anniversary screening at the DGA. Indeed, the compilation of supplementals was so dense and involved that it delayed the disc’s release by many months. The Star! laserdisc finally hit the shelves on August 16, 1995 with a USD$80.00 price tag, not exactly cheap today let alone 25 years ago, and it quickly established a new benchmark for special edition film releases to the home video market (“Be Glad”: 2; “Widescreen Special Edition”: 85)
Now, if only we could get Fox to play ball again 25 years later and authorise that long-awaited BluRay release of Star! for the 50th anniversary!

Time for your Rock Report
The Beatles recently released a new animated video for their 1966 classic "Taxman." The video drops ahead of the expanded special edition release of the band's classic Revolver album, which hits the shelves on October 28. The animated video was directed by Danny Sangra, who previously worked with the band on a series of animated birthday messages from "Taxman" writer George Harrison to John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The Beatles announced the expanded edition of Revolver in July and released a demo version of "Taxman." In the special edition, the album's 14 tracks have been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo and Dolby Atmos, and the album's original mono mix is sourced from its 1966 mono master tape.
Ringo Starr has canceled the rest of his North American tour after he was diagnosed with COVID-19 for a second time. "I'm sure you'll be as surprised as I was I tested positive again for Covid the rest of the tour is off I send you peace and love Ringo," the Beatles legend tweeted. The latest update comes as a surprise to Starr's fans, as the musician and his band got back on the road just earlier this month after his first COVID diagnosis. He was forced to cancel several shows in Canada, as well as in the Midwest, after initially testing positive.
"Ringo hopes to resume as soon as possible and is recovering at home," an announcement on Starr's website said at that time. "As always, he and the All Starrs send peace and love to their fans and hope to see them back out on the road soon."
Rock legend Neil Young has announced plans to release a 50th anniversary edition of his popular 1972 album, Harvest, on December 2 via Reprise. The 50th anniversary edition will feature a previously unreleased documentary and concert film, three outtakes from the sessions, and more. The reissue will be available on 3xLP and 3xCD sets, with including hardbound photo book, posters, and liner notes by photographer Joel Bernstein. Harvest was Young's fourth studio album and was released on February 1, 1972 by Reprise Records. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart for two weeks and spawned two hit singles, "Old Man," which peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Heart of Gold," which reached No. 1. It was the best-selling album of 1972 in the United States. In 2015, Harvest was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
