Thank God I found someone else who wasn't jazzed about Peach's voice in the movie. "Luigi, you were so brave" should have been a much sweeter line than it was but it was the flattest read in the whole movie in my opinion.

As much as I like that line in and of itself... yeah 😬

The thing is, Anya Taylor-Joy is by far the least experienced person in the main cast when it comes to voice acting. Seth Rogan, Keagan Michael Key, Jack Black, Chris Pratt, and Charlie Day have already got quite a few animated movie/tv show titles under their belt. I think the only other voice part Anya played was like... the lead lady from the Playmobil movie everyone forgot about?

Not to discredit her abilities as a film actress! But screen acting and voice acting are very different ballparks.

I just hope she is aware of this and puts some effort into doing better in future animated projects.

ok so i was talking to @to-be-a-dreamer @tarantulas4davey and @carpe-diem-since-1899 about racetrack things the other day and i just thought i would dump some of those thoughts here bc i am So invested in this weird little guy

anyway i just ,, i have a lot of feelings abt jack passing the newsies onto racer once he ages out.

i feel like. charlie is the next choice, but charlie in my eyes is the same age as- if not older than- jack; if jack hadn’t been the leader of the newsboys, it definitely would have been charlie, but jack is the one who took the reins. (this age hc is mostly because of west endsies ngl.) anyway! moving on

jack and charlie have always been a team. charlie is definitely jack’s second in terms of always being there, but race is his second in terms of business- it only makes sense for race to take over when jack is gone, and i just,, i love the concept of race either not really wanting that or not really knowing how to handle that. i think, at his core, race is trying to hold onto whatever youth he has left. its why he’s always cracking jokes, despite how jaded and angry he is under the surface. he pretends not to care or else he’ll crack under the pressure, and when he cracks, it’s angry. it’s mean. his bark is as bad as his bite. so he puts on this front- this childish, snarky, comedic relief front- and he’s terrified of the implications of Being The Leader because he feels like he’ll no longer have that front to hold onto or hide behind. and it takes him a long time, i think, to realize that he doesn’t have to be exactly who Jack was- he can lead the newsboys how he sees fit, he doesn’t need to be a carbon copy of jack, because they’re fundamentally so different. and i think that is just very fun

but more on the anger, because i think it’s an interesting take that is very much represented in West Endsies- as @roideny and @jack-kellys have pointed out before:

i’m interested in the other newsies- especially albert, finch, and maybe spot- seeing that sadness and strain and anger that seems to be taking it’s place as his dominant trait. yeah. bc i think,, i think race is angry at his core, like i said. angry at his position in all of this. angry that jack left, that charlie followed, that davey was never staying in the first place, that spot still thinks of him as a kid instead of a new leader, that other burrough leaders don’t take him seriously because they know him as the jokester. angry that these kids are his kids now, and angry that his kids are still starving, still walking holes in their shoes, still shivering at night and still dying of sickness when the cold weather hits too hard. i want this race to be fucking pissed and i want everyone else to be caught off guard by it.

because, let’s be real, jack wasn’t the roughest leader. he was strong, and dependable, and not afraid to put kids in their place, but he’s still nurturing and parental. after years of being used to that, i think the newsies would struggle with Race for a while, especially as race tries to figure out his leadership style, and i think a lot of that would manifest in this anger that has been bubbling up under the surface for ages- the anger he never lets anyone see because he doesn’t want that.

race has spent anywhere from 5 to 10 years- depending on when you headcanon him to join the newsies- being the funny guy, the clown, the joker; if he’s going to earn respect, he’s going to have to take it from a few kids. lashing out and being brash- all for the sake of keeping everyone safe, of course- but he’s such a different leader than jack, and i think it would be SO fun to explore that more in post-canon works.

So what we know: Calico Jack and Kwazii both have pirate pasts. Pirates are usually known to have murd3r-y battles and fatal duels and the like, but can you imagine Kwazii murd3ring anyone? Cause I can’t. But yknow what? I can imagine Calico Jack 👀

SO: Maybe Calico Jack was a merciless pirate like the others before Kwazii was born. We know Calico Jack probably stayed around until Kwazii was maybe 4-6 cause of the photos, then he went to Amazon in search of the lost city and never returned. BUT CONSIDER THIS FOLKS: Once Kwazii was born, maybe Jack had a realization, like “oh dang. This is a dangerous and problematic lifestyle😬” He always tried to positively influence Kwazii, like “hey u can totally be a pirate without hurtin anyone, peace and love my guy” we know Kwazii was already starting to take after the pirate side of him from the photos, and Kwazii does get mistaken for Calico Jack, so Jack most likely got scared that something would happen to Kwazii like his leg or worse. Here’s where it gets intense hehe- mayhaps calico went on a bit of a spree finding the ruthless enemies of his (thinking they might mistake Kwazii for him and attack) like Whitebeard, Pirate King, all of em and uh “took care of them” so to speak. I was especially thinking about how Kwazii has all the keys to their treasure chests, and how all of their ships are sunken. SECOND SO: Jack leaves the keys and other clues to Kwazii, and departs to the Amazon, partially to escape authorities lmao and to have a final meeting place for them under the cover of to supposedly “find the hidden city” like bro be fr ain’t no way u was there for 20 years and didn’t find it cmon now it was a ploy💀

So overall, everything Kwazii thought was his pirate past, being a pirate before his Octonauts days, it was all set up by Calico Jack. Finding the maps, finding the music box, finding the Pirate Kings sword, finding the coconut crabs, finding the other half of the Amazon map so they would meet again: none of it was being a real pirate, it was a fabricated reality to keep Kwazii happy but most of all safe. That’s why we see no other cat pirates still alive and why good ol Jack gives me shady vibes💀✨🎶And that’s the truth about Calico Jack🎶✨

Summary

But depending on yourself can be difficult when you have a black hole for a cat. So the Prefect does what she does best--fix the problems Grim causes.

Meanwhile, however, a certain “benevolent” dorm leader seems to be having history repeat itself. . . .

Mia flipped up a corner of the bed sheets before lifting her mattress, where she expected to have one of her stashes. Only, it was empty.

With a frown she set her mattress down and fixed her bed again. Technically that was supposed to be her emergency stash, but it was the first place she thought of.

Taking her boots off, she climbed on top of her bed and walked to the shelf on the wall. She then checked over her shoulder and listened for any footsteps before opening the yellow box on the shelf. Which was practically empty. “This was full a week ago!”

Closing it, she reached over to the green-ish box next to it and opened it. And it was half empty. “How the. . . ?”

Mia went over everything she had done requiring money. She mostly bought what she needed and rarely bought anything that was a want of hers, and if she did get something she wanted she made sure she had enough to get said item (and all of this was obviously excluding bets she lost to any of the guys. Mainly to Ace. And Deuce sometimes). She hadn’t told Grim about where she kept her money because she knew exactly what he would spend it on. So where did it all go?

I’m probably missing something.

“Heyyy how’s it goin’, Prefect?”

Mia turned around to see one of the dorm ghosts popping in. “Oh hey. Nothing much, just looking for something.”

“Like what?”

She looked down the hall. “If I tell you you better not tell anyone else.”

“My lips are sealed!”

“All right.” Mia began to put the boxes back on the shelf and make her way down. “I’ve been keeping stashes of money in those two boxes up there and under my mattress. Y’know for emergencies and to keep handy. But apparently I have less than what I thought I had. Even my emergency stash is gone. So either I’ve been forgetting to keep track or someone’s been snooping around in here.”

“Hmmm. . . . Well, lately I’ve been seeing Grim come in here a lot by himself. Usually you two are together so I got curious and followed him in. He kept muttering to himself about ‘where she kept it’ and started sniffing around.”

Mia crossed her arms. “Oh he did, huh?”

Before the ghost could continue, humming could be heard coming towards them, and the duo looked to Grim entering the room with his eyes blissfully closed.

“Nya-ha! I’m so getting that deluxe tuna! Oooh I can almost taste it—Fnah!”

“Grim, have you been snooping around in here?” Mia threatened.

“N-n-no. I was just . . . getting my notebook! Yeah! That’s what I was coming here for!”

“It’s Saturday. And I made sure you finished that history assignment yesterday.”

“Y’know it’s not polite to snoop around in a girl’s room, Grimmy,” the ghost pointed out.

“How would you know if I was doing that?!” Grim accused.

“He just told me he’s been catching you coming in here looking for something,” Mia stated. Then it hit her. “You did not.”

I think there should be a crossover au where the protagonists of Henry Slick's film (Jack Skellington, James Trotter, Coraline Jones, and Kat from the upcoming film Wendell and Wild) are all friends.

I just feel like it could lead to a multitude of cute, funny, and even some angsty interactions- I also love all of these films so it's like a bonus to be able to talk about them to folks.
