Jason keeps going despite Bruce’s and Batman’s disapproval in his methods, even when he’s not killing. Bruce’s mistrust and distain only harden his resolve. It makes it easier for him to be on his own, to operate outside the Bats. At least that’s what he tells himself. Mostly its true.

Offended that I walk the line

Bruce looks at Jason with contempt. He’s made no effort to get to know Jason for who he is now, still so hung up on who he was before Ethiopia. He’s not willing to give him a chance because of their different views and methods. Jason walks the line between hero and villain in Bruce’s eyes.

So what if I'm not

So what if I'm not everything you wanted me to be?

So what if I am

So what if I am more than you can see?

Jason isn’t Bruce’s perfect little soldier, his Robin, his dead son. He’s not what Bruce planned for him, he’s his own person and he doesn’t need Bruce’s approval, but his recognition wouldn’t hurt. He does good, even if it’s sometimes accompanied by bad. He’s using Bruce’s training, and his own training. He’s calculating and intelligent, he saves lives, even if he’s taken them too. He’s more than a fallen soldier, he’s here, he’s alive, and he’s making a difference, even if Bruce only sees his sins.

I should've walked away one year ago

Bruce’s disapproval just solidifies his decision to remain on the outside. He doesn’t need his family if they don’t want him. He’ll keep protecting the alley, he’ll keep doing things his way. He should have known not to bother after that night with the Joker and the Batarang, he should have known he wasn’t wanted or welcome.

As far as I can tell, it's kinda crazy

In Jason’s eyes, he is the way he is because of Bruce, in a way. For all the preaching of his independence, he wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Bruce’s shortcomings. When he does reach out to Jason its for that fifteen-year-old that ran away from home, but he only ran away from home because Bruce didn’t trust him. And when he died he didn’t avenge him.

Why you wanna see me bleed?

Why you wanna watch me fall apart?

Try to find the worst in me

But I won't follow you into the dark

Batman doesn’t want Red Hood in Gotham as long as he’s using deadly force, and even when Jason stops Bruce refuses to see the good Jason does, he only ever sees the worst in him.

The thing I’m most proud of in my Jason Todd/Red Hood playlist (linked below) is the cover of Holding Out For A Hero by Nothing But Thieves (also linked) because it fits Jay so well. When he was a boy in a warehouse, broken by a crowbar, not ready to be so close to death, you bet your ass he was holding out for a hero. He needed saved. No one came for him. If he had just lived a little longer, if the bomb had been a few minutes late, Bruce might have gotten there. He might have been saved.

My Jason Todd 20 Song Playlist.

I did not have any issues really. Some artists are repeated, but I do not (I believe) have any banned artists from the lists on there. I picked songs about rejection, legacy, grief, abandonment, rebellion, radical acceptance, and human rights, things I think that either represent Jason or are important to Jason. These are songs I listen to regularly and have on my own playlists. I hope you enjoy, and yes, I am a NIckelback fan.

Jason Todd Playlist Analysis

PART 13

Seventeen Going Under by Sam Fender

I see this song being about Jason’s childhood, referencing his mother, Catherine, and his father, Willis. He’s struggled for his whole life, from the moment he was born to now, he’s always been “going under”. The age of seventeen is less literal in this case, I just take it to mean child in general for Jason.

I remember the sickness was forever

I remember snuff videos

Cold Septembers, the distances we covered

The fist fights on the beach, the bizzies round us up

Do it all again next week

An embryonic love

The first time that it scarred

Embarrass yourself for someone

Crying like a child

And the boy who kicked Tom's head in

Still bugs me now

That's the thing, it lingers

And claws you when you're down

Reference to the poverty the Todds experienced, Catherine’s illness, struggling to keep a roof over their heads, the violence Jason witnessed at home and just from growing up in Park Row in general. It’s a constant repetition one week to the next. The rest of this part could just reference snippets of Jason’s early childhood. There’s no escaping poverty, it just keeps pulling you down as soon as you think you’re doing better.

I was far too scared to hit him

But I would hit him in a heartbeat now

That's the thing with anger

It begs to stick around

So it can fleece you of your beauty

And leave you spent with nowt to offer

Makes you hurt the ones who love you

You hurt them like they're nothing

This part makes me think of Willis, taking shady jobs and working for Gotham’s rogues to support his family, but taking out his stress and frustrations on his family. Jason knows that Willis loved them, but there’s no denying that he hurt them. It could reference Catherine as well, with how she came to rely on drugs to deal with her illness, which obviously hurt Jason also. Jason has even less doubt in his mother’s love, but her addiction had a large impact on Jason’s childhood.

See I spent my teens enraged

Spiralin' in silence

And I armed myself with a grin

'Cause I was always the fuckin' joker

A mirrored picture of my old man

I know a lot of people talk about how Jason wasn’t angry, but he was, and that’s okay, it doesn't mean it was the only thing he felt. He had a lot of anger as a teen, and it did slip into his work as Robin. He started to see Willis in himself, and as a teen he was still angry at Willis for how he treated him and Catherine, and for leaving them to survive without him.

She said the debt, the debt, the debt

So I thought about shifting gear

And how she wept and wept and wept

Well, luck came and died 'round here

I see my mother

The DWP see a number

She cries on the floor encumbered

I'm seventeen going under

When Willis was sent to prison, and then killed, Jason and Catherine were left to fend for themselves. As Catherine got sicker, a lot of her care and general responsibilities fell onto Jason. He also started to steal and move drugs to provide for them, which distressed Catherine greatly. The government doesn’t see Catherine as a person, she doesn’t qualify for any help, and the only help Jason can receive takes him away from her. It’s an impossible situation. This goes on until Catherine dies, and then Jason is totally alone.
