Awards 2023 : TV Shows
Third and last category: TV Shows that I’ve watched at least one complete season of this year.
Apocalypse Won Award - The Last of Us - Season 1 Episode 3 "Long, Long Time"
Tumblr media
Still crying over those strawberries.
These Gays Award - The White Lotus - Seasons 1 & 2
Tumblr media
And the world finally knew the greatness of Jennifer Coolidge *dolphin sounds*
Royalty But With Heart Award - Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story - Mini-Serie
Tumblr media
The Queen and King of Hearts in a surprisingly touching tale. Personally, there's not enough free space under my bed to hide from the heavens.
Best Performance Award - Foundation - Laura Birn - Season 2 Episode 10 "Creation Myths"
Tumblr media
Give her all the awards ! Her portrayal of Lady Demerzel inner turmoil is the biggest reason to watch this show.
Best Queer Show Award - Our Flag Means Death - Season 2
Tumblr media
Glory to Calypso !
Warm Blanket Award - Hearstopper - Season 2
Tumblr media
Dark clouds are on the horizon but that won't prevent Charlie, Nick & co from being one of the best feel good show around right now.
This Is An Insult Award - Secret Invasion - Season 1
Tumblr media
NOTHING in this show works. The spy stuff is not suspenseful, the action is laughable, Fury is bored from start to finish and nothing carries over in the MCU. Let's all forget that this thing ever happened.
Awkward Goodbye Award - The Witcher - Henry Cavill - Season 3
Tumblr media
At least we still have Yennefer to stan for.
Could Have Ended Better Award - Ted Lasso - Season 3
Tumblr media
Compared to how excellent the two previous seasons were, this final one is such a mixed bag. So many storylines lead to absolutely nothing while others were so weird, and I'm not a fan of how it ended (but damn was Jamie hot this season). So long Richmond, you've been (mostly) great !
Best Goodbye Award - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - Season 5
Tumblr media
Midge + Suzie = OTP <3
Best Audio Serie Award - Third Eye - Season 1
Tumblr media
For her first foray in the audio serie format, Felicia Day rocks it out of the park with a heartfelt story of a Chosen One who failed to save the world of magic and had to live with the consequences. Impeccable sound mixing and vfx with a stellar cast. Give it a listen, you wont regret it.
Best WTF Award - Mrs. Davis - Season 1
Tumblr media
The story of a nun who has a vendetta with an AI that controls the world. The script is on acid half the time and worth it. Also, hot Jesus.
Best Comedy Award - Abbott Elementary - Season 2/What We Do in the Shadows - Season 5
Tumblr media
Again this year, the two funniest comedies with the most heart win the award. Special mention to Guillermo finally realizing that becoming a vampire is not really for him.
Best TV Show Award - Scavengers Reign - Season 1
Tumblr media
A show that makes you feel like you are reading a Mobius album. Gorgeous to look at, within a vibrant world with the most hostile and fascinating fauna I've seen in a long time. Topped with touching and interesting characters. Can't wait for season 2.

Birnes, Dr. Lisa Cassileth, David Hughes, Major Darrell Grob and archival footage of Hedy Lamarr.
Directed by Alexandra Dean.
Distributed by Zeitgeist Films. 90 minutes. Not Rated.
bomb·shell:
1.  An overwhelming surprise or disappointment.
2.  a very attractive woman
3.  a fitting title for a movie about one of Hollywood’s most recognized faces and the “hidden in plain sight” story about an under acknowledged genius of her time.
Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story dishes on the Hollywood beauty icon who garnered worldwide attention for her glamorous looks, marriages, scandals, and even arrests. More importantly, it sheds light on her inventive mind, strength, and perseverance to make a difference in the world.
Born to a wealthy family in Vienna, Austria, Hedy was raised between the world wars, leading a bourgeois life of private schools and the celebration of culture, encouraged by her father to be creative and use her mind. Although born Jewish, the Kiesler family lived as assimilated Jews and did not publicize their religion.
Hedy began her acting career in small Viennese films in her early teens, but gained notoriety at age 18, in 1933’s Ecstasy, a scandalous film of its time denounced by both the Pope for its sexual escapades and by Hitler for its Jewish actress.  It left a black mark on young Hedy’s career that she worked hard to overcome, but seemed to have had an ongoing impact on her contracts and overall career as both filmmakers and the public made assumptions on her character and acting skill, typecasting her for years.
At 19, Hedy married Fritz Mandal, a jealous munitions tycoon, 14 years her senior. This was to be her first of six marriages. A fun note mentioned in Bombshell is that Mandal’s jealousy and paranoia led him to buy up every print of Hedy from Ecstasy, and the more he bought, the more prints there were created. In spite of luxury and leisure, the marriage was unhappy and in the end, Hedy managed a stunning escape with her jewels sewn into her coat lining and maneuvered her way to London and then to Hollywood.
Bombshell is filled with vignettes, photos, and footage of Old Hollywood – the glamour, the forced entry into drug use and addiction, and a world run by powerful men. This is much of the gossip and history that we’ve heard, but in Hedy’s world, there was also a parallel life of science and invention that she pursued in her off time – be it in her Hollywood set trailer or in her limited free time.
What Bombshell does well is to tell the cautionary tale of what can happen to the human spirit if inventiveness and creativity are not celebrated and allowed to flourish. This is not the story of Albert Einstein, Howard Hughes, or Henry Ford. This is the story of a woman who collaborated on an idea that led to a US Patent for signal hopping technologies, was given a “thanks but no thanks” and then was told to put her efforts into something more useful, like selling war bonds if she wanted to help the troops. Her groundbreaking invention is the foundation of today’s Bluetooth, GPS, and secure wi-fi technologies. At the time, it was acknowledged by the Navy and then shelved.
Hedy’s story is fascinating because it is so widely unknown. Bombshell as an overall film feels slow, rightfully angry, and a bit narcissistic as it focuses a bit too much time directly on cuts from her 1990 cassette recorded 1990 Forbes Interview.
It is an important story for this generation in the midst of the #metoo movement and a Hollywood journey in search of equality. However, I don’t suspect the story will garner the attention that it deserves in this format. Bombshell will be attractive to Old Hollywood buffs, but I fear that it will not reach the audience of young women that it is meant to inspire.

Hello from the Hosts of Uplift Family Services annual Norma Jean Gala
Tumblr media
I can think of no more meaningful way to honor Mental Health Awareness Month than by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with these fine folks as we supported Uplift Family Services at the Norma Jean Gala last night at Hollygrove. Uplift Family Services provides a continuum of programs and services to meet the social, emotional, behavioral and mental health needs of young children, teens and their families. And, seeing it firsthand myself, has changed my life. Busy Philipps, on my left, invited me to sit at her table at this same gala last year...but little did I know what a big role this little heart-centered organization would play in my world this year. Each time I have volunteered at the campus, I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the children and their families, and in awe of the love and indefatigable spirit of the staff here. IN AWE. I was so honored to be included when they asked me to be on the host board along with Busy, Colin Hanks, Samantha Hanks, Matt Bomer Ian Ziering Erin Ziering Janie Bryant, Ashlee Margolis, Carson Meyer, Catherine McCord and more. Special thanks to our fearless event co-chairs, Boni Bryant & Sheri Stowe Weller for their vision and passion, and to Sally Pressman (on my right) for her mad auctioning skills with Ike Barinholtz. Speaking of Ike, congratulations to him and his wife Erica on being honored with the Ambassador of Children Award, and to Volunteer of the Year, Chris Andrews of CAA. And, personal very special thanks to my dear friends who sat at my table last night and bid away, and to my many other friends and brands I work with for their generous auction donations, including Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya JetSuite Kate Somerville Skincare philosophy Ripley Rader Game Night In A Can Ocean Prime Beverly Hills Citizen Andrew Freeman Jennifer Birn and to Dove for the beautiful giftbags that everyone took home with them. Together, with all of our love, intention and enthusiasm, we helped break a Hollygrove record and raised over $100,000 for these vital services and support for our city’s children and their families. I implore you all to get to know this organization, and to fall as deeply in love with it as we have. Ask me how. 📷: Michael Kovac Getty Images #NormaJeanGala2018

joyful celebration of Friendship and life
GEN PADALECKI
On quality female friendships It’s like having a partner in crime, someone who lets you be your true self. Like Mark Twain says, ‘Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.’
Favorite thing to do with girlfriends in Austin is walking Lake Austin Trail, having coffee at Better Half, a beer at Idle Hands, a bite at The Well.  Although the best ones are usually hangouts on my girlfriend’s couches lounging in sweats.
What I love about being a woman is embracing all the intricacies, challenges, and beauty it entails.  It’s about embodying strength, grace, femininity, grit, compassion and vulnerability.
I hope to teach my daughter to embrace who you are and where you are.  Don’t apologize for being you.  Be kind, but be strong.  Listen, but also be heard.  And run with the wolves.  Own your wild. I love this quote from Women Who Run With Wolves ‘The way to maintain one's connection to the wild is to ask yourself what it is that you want. This is the sorting of the seed from the dirt. One of the most important discriminations we can make in this matter is the difference between things that beckon to us and things that call from our souls.” Do not be afraid to listen to yourself.

Catching Up with Gen Padalecki
The run up to the holidays is packed with parties and festive events, gift buying, travel prepping and wrapping up all the loose ends of the year. Add to that running a business and a book club, acting, being a wife (to actor and entrepreneur Jared Padalecki) and mama of three (two boys and a girl), and things are busy for Genevieve Padalecki. We caught up with Gen, and talked about things from family and their new farm to two of her passions, books and towwn. Short for Take Only What You Need, towwn is a site she started with longtime friend Kelly Mickle to help people sustainably win the battle against burnout, both for themselves and the planet, with tips from eco-friendly kitchen swaps and sustainable sandals to self-care.
You’ve lived in Austin for more than 12 years, what advice would you give someone new to Austin?
Embrace the weird, always say ‘hi’ to your neighbor, don’t judge opinions and views that might differ from yours, rather try to understand where others are coming from.
What do you love about living in Austin?
I love the eclectic collaborative community. I've always felt like I could be completely myself here.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Family time.
How are you and your family celebrating the holidays this year?
We are doing things differently this year and giving our family an adventure.
What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
I love all the decorating, crafting, and meal making. I find it therapeutic and I love when my kids propose the activity.
Do you have a recipe you love to make around the holidays?
We love cooking during the holidays and all the kiddos love to contribute. It can range from a great lasagna to a medium rare steak (cooked by our 10-year-old), to my husband's favorite, tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons.  The holidays are so fun and gathering with friends and family for a meal is the best part.
How long have you had your book club?
I started my book club when we went into lockdown.  I wanted a way to connect with people and have an outlet.  I reached out asking for a “this or that” book pick for the month and Southern Book Clubs’ Guide to Slaying Vampires was a fan favorite.  Next thing I know Grady Hendrix and I are zooming and chatting about his book.  It’s been a wild couple of years and I am so inspired and feel so incredibly grateful for all the insightful, thoughtful and thought-provoking, stunning and beautiful writers I have been able to meet, converse and collaborate with because of it.
What are some you’d recommend for gifting this year?
Pony, Red, White and Royal Blue, The Overstory, Tribe, Letters to a Young Athlete, Why We Sleep and Into Thin Air.
How do you consume books? Do you prefer real books, audiobooks, kindle?
I prefer old-fashioned books I can hold in my hand. There’s something so wonderful about the sensory experience, the weight, the pages in between my fingers, turning a page, the smell of the binding. It just adds to the experience and for me is a delectable rush.  I also love a good audiobook, especially with all the driving I do, but it all depends on the narrator.
What’s new with towwn?
towwn is growing so quickly and we’re incredibly proud of our community. We just launched our TikTok channel to help spread our anti-perfectionism message about the planet and ourselves to reach new audiences. We’re also building an informative and fun newsletter.
What do you hope to see in the evolution of TOWWN in 2023?
Our main focus is reaching people who want to find solutions to burnout for themselves and the planet, regardless of background and politics. We’re looking at hosting more events where we can bring people together for these kinds of conversations, curating products to help people solve these challenges. You can learn more on our Instagram @towwn.
You and Jared recently bought a farm…
Yes, we love nature and I’m obsessed with soil health and regenerative farming. I’m hoping we slowly let the land speak to us and thoughtfully nurture biodiversity and tend to the soil as best we can. I’d like to have rotational cover crops as well as grazing animals to contribute to this beautiful symbiotic relationship. It’s also nice having a refuge for our family to get messy and breathe in and get lost in the woods so to speak.
What accomplishment are you most proud of in 2022?
I'm most proud of my family.  They are what I am so grateful for.
You went back to ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ this season in flashbacks, any desire or plans on the horizon to return to more acting?
Definitely, if it works for our family schedule.
You and Jared have been married 12 years, any advice on having a marriage with longevity?
Marriage is the best and most amazing adventure in the world. And like farming, there are some good seasons and not so great ones. Marriage takes a lot of love and nurturing. Throughout our lives we change and evolve into many different people. So, in a partnership, you’re both constantly growing and it’s impossible to always grow together, whether in parallel lines or intertwined at the same time. The best advice that’s been helpful for me is to take time and try and understand where your partner is coming from, and before reacting to anything that maybe feels a bit incendiary or frustrating, give it 24 hours.
What’s something one of your kids did lately that surprised you or made you laugh?
Well, I'm currently watching my 8-year-old try and tell me U2 is the best band of all time I had no idea he knew U2!  My oldest sang a song in mandarin at a school talent show and my youngest gave her best ‘Hocus Pocus’ rendition dancing on our kitchen table - all in the last 24 hours! I don't know why I'm surprised by their theater bug, but clearly it's shining through.
Quick Fire Questions
Favorite book of 2022: Four Treasures of the Sky by Austin’s own Jenny Tinghui Zhang was outstanding - and it was her debut novel
Last show you binged: House of Dragons & The Bear with Jeremy Allen White
Favorite method of self-care:  Taking a time out for myself and remembering to be kind to myself and set that example.
Favorite restaurant to eat out: Emmer & Rye, Soto, WuChow
Favorite place to order in: Torchys
Go-to cocktail: Extra dirty martini or a good old fashioned beer is really my fav.
If you could have one superpower: To go back in time
