For a whole generation, this week marks the 25th anniversary of quietly tuning in to Channel 4 with the sound turned right down, in the desperate hope that it didn’t arouse suspicion.

Queer As Folk, Russell T Davies’ series about the lives of three gay friends, debuted in February 1999. It was a bold look at the heart of Manchester’s gay scene that provided something then rare in British television: a joyous exploration of what it meant to be gay.

“I vividly remember thinking: ‘Canal Street, does such a place really exist?’” says the BBC Radio 2 DJ Owain Wyn Evans. “It was a far cry from the head count of absolute zero role models or reference points available for me at the time in Ammanford, south Wales.”

The show has been celebrated as a pivotal moment of LGBTQ+ representation, but it wasn’t the only one. Here, notable LGBTQ+ people, including Joe Lycett, Juno Dawson and Alice Oseman, talk about the television that helped them.

Looking

Before All of Us Strangers, there was Looking. Launched in 2014, the HBO series following three gay friends in San Francisco was cancelled after just 18 episodes (and a feature-length special).

But it has aged like a fine wine. It feels remarkably human and captures beautifully the little things – such as when Patrick (Jonathan Groff) and Richie (Raúl Castillo) catch each other’s eyes on the subway for the first time. Or the heartbreaking way Kevin (Russell Tovey) rubs Patrick’s ears when he knows he is seeing him for the last time.

After years of being “othered” because of my sexuality, Looking was the first time I realised that I could – and should – experience the same highs (and lows) of romantic love as everyone else; that there is a world out there and I should explore it.

Nolo Pasaro - Nolo is in charge of picking the movies- assuming whatever big ass van they renovated comes with one of those little movie player things. Who am I kidding- these guys probably would have just installed one if it didn’t come stock. Unfortunately, Nolo’s movie choices are always pretty predictable. It’s either going to be one of the now TEN Fast and Furious movies, Pacific Rim, Transformers, or The Losers. That being said, Nolo DOES take bribes. Vert once washed his car for a week just so they could watch Surfs Up.

Vert Wheeler - Speaking of Vert, he’s the snack guy! At first, he gathered up everyone’s requests a few days before they got on the road, but now he practically has everyone’s snack preferences memorized. Let it be known that he takes this job very seriously. He genuinely goes out of his way to ensure everyone’s got at least one or two things to munch on. That’s also why he starts shopping a few days out from the actual trip, so that way if he has to run by different stores, or cut up fruit and divide them up into little ziplock bags he’s got enough time to do it. I also like to imagine at some point Jack comes home early from one of his missions and sees his son just surrounded by a shit ton of food like “are we doomsday prepers now??? What the hell is going on???”

Shirako Takamoto - I feel like I don’t even have to say it, but I’m going to anyway. Shirako is the DJ. Like Vert, he is very serious about this role. He starts curating a playlist as soon as he knows a road trip is going to happen. It doesn’t matter if he’s learning about it months in advance, he starts on it immediately. Despite always having headphones on and seemingly vibing in his own little world most of the time, Shirako is an astounding listener. He never fails to add the perfect mix of everyone’s favorite songs to the playlist. Not only that, but he has it sectioned out by hour. He wants to make sure whatever music they have playing, whether it be background noise for group conversations, or loud sing along sessions, it’s perfect!

Kurt Wylde - Spoilers for Karma, but they’re the two drivers. They work in shifts, switching off every few hours to (1) make sure they’re making the best time and (2) prevent any unnecessary road fatigue. Kurt is also practically the group big brother, so before any trip he’s sending everyone checklists to make sure they don’t forget anything. It’s ridiculous how in-depth they are. Obviously, he trusts them to fulfill their individual road trip roles but he’s on their asses for literally anything else. They’ll be ready to go at like 4am- everyone’s tired asf and he’s going around like “wallets? phones? chargers? toothbrushes???” making sure they didn’t forget any last minute items.

Karma Eiss - Like you read for Kurt, she is one of the designated drivers. On top of that though she is also the group navigator. She has like Waze levels of finding the best routes. With her at the helm, they’re able to make a 12 hour drive in a fraction of the time. Karma also has his uncanny ability to pick the best rest stops. Want to use the restroom but also take a quick breather in a nice scenic area? Good thing Karma was able to find the most beautiful truck stop you’ve ever seen with the cleanest bathroom ever. It’s honestly a little scary.

Bonus Round

Brian Kadeem - With Kadeem, it’s all about the journey, not the destination. When this guy road trips, he ROAD TRIPS. What I mean by that is you will be stopping at just about every cite to stop and smell the roses. It doesn’t matter if it’s some tacky tourist trap or one of the seven wonders of the world, he wants to see it, learn about it, and appreciate it. And if anyone one deserves to be able to relax a little, it’s Kadeem. Let this man enjoy his goofy little side quests. Especially, cause he ends up finding the greatest hole in the wall places to stop at too.

Banjee Castillo - Banjee quite literally never runs out of energy, so you HAVE to give this guy something to do or he will be miserable the entire ride. Thankfully, he is absurdly versatile. Obviously, his preferred role is to be in the drivers seat, but when he is not doing that he is the king of road trip games. 21 questions, I spy, and trivia are child’s play compared to the shit that Banjee brings to the table. Don’t get him wrong, he loves the classics, but they get old pretty fast on long road trips so he’s had to get creative in the past. It’s not uncommon for there to be three games going on at once half way through the drive. Usually two “spot em” games like Punch Buggies & Cows on my Side, and one actual game like Mafia or Song Quizzes.

Miami Vice S1E11: Give a Little, Take a Little

Gina and Trudy take focus and Sonny goes to jail for an informant.

Both of the main plots in this episode (Sonny goes to jail because he refuses to give up an anonymous source whose life is in danger & Gina is forced into an unwanted sexual situation with a criminal in order to maintain her cover) are used again in later episodes-- and I'm really not sure if they're better covered here or in those later outings

The opening crawl with GAYETY, yes, good, give us all the gayety

There's at least one Miami Vice episode where the footage of the seedy businesses is actually borrowed from unused Starsky & Hutch footage, meaning it's from 70's LA instead of 80's Miami, and I thought it was this one but can't find any references, so I guess it isn't?

This is great Trudy/Gina episode-- they try on lingerie together, Trudy seems upset and jealous when Gina is late to lunch, they hold hands and get a patented Miami Vice Freeze Frame about it, they hug and are generally very protective of one another. A+ Gayety, ladies.

Sonny "I am Very Mentally Healthy" Crockett swings an axe around at a warehouse worker who is tangentially involved with a drug ring, and then takes him outside and touches him a bunch and asks him if he's gay because he's the type that "guys in prison would really like"

This is a good low-key early "the rich can use the justice system as a tool to get what they want and you, Vice Squad, as tools of the justice system yourself, cannot prevent that" episode

Tubbs' face when the judge says she thinks Sonny did a good job with his report is so cute. He's like "Yeah! You did! That's my boy who wrote a good report!"

There's a scene where Switek is practicing his (terrible) standup for the rest of the squad, and for no specific reason, Gina and Zito are just holding hands? It's so fucking adorable, like. These people are such good friends! They love each other so much! And all of them are too fucked up to know how to say it!

Sonny: Hey boss, thanks for pulling a bunch of shady favors to get me out of jail! / Castillo: I absolutely did not do that and never will / Sonny: .___. ...oh

Both Trudy and Gina just shoot guys more or less in cold blood here, which will later become Gina's favorite activity and Trudy's second favorite activity. Diversity Win! The cops that are serving as street executioners are women of color.

There is zero interaction between Sonny and Gina in this episode until the very end, where they stare at each other in silence for like a solid minute and a half. I think this is supposed to indicate that Sonny somehow feels guilty other Gina's trauma and that Gina is feeling... shame? Maybe? Because they're in love or something? It's deeply awkward and ineffective, and we can't say the writing and directing staff don't know how to show two characters who care about each other dealing with the fallout of trauma because a) that's like half the show and b) they already had that scene with Gina and Trudy in this same episode and it was much better?

Jail Sonny is like. DJ is just doing Fortune in Men's Eyes again, isn't he. Is that what's wrong with Sonny re: his constant bringing up of prison assault? Past life regression to Smitty?

The last day of the Faire, the sky was overcast, with rumbles of thunder in the far distance. As Mayor Nat stepped up to the podium set up in front of town hall, a small crowd gathered to hear the announcement. She proceeded to declare Pandora Flowers as the winner of the costume contest, and withdrew the sword to present to the winner of the tournament, Morgan Vovk.

Before she could, though, Quinn Buckley from the commune ran up on stage and grabbed the microphone from the podium.

“Listen! You have to listen. This, all of this, is because of a being far greater than us! It sent the creatures from the woods to test us! To separate the weak from the strong. It judges us because it wants us to be ready before it reveals itself. We have to listen! We have to—“

Sheriff Henry attempted to take the microphone from her, but she struggled against him, still shouting into the microphone.

“It’s real! I felt its presence! Those that listen will be saved!”

Thunder rumbled, closer than before, much closer. A loud crack of lightning illuminated the sky, blindingly bright. Beyond the clouds, briefly visible in that split second, loomed a shape, unrecognizable and massive, both bulbous and gangly. As quickly as it appeared it was gone, and what remained was the sizzling body of Tristan Wilde, struck by the lightning. The sky opened up, then, as thunder boomed directly above, and rain and hail pelted the town.

“It’s there! You all saw it! It’s real! We have to submit!” Quinn wailed, as Henry attempted to pull her off the stage. “I can prove it! I can walk amongst them untouched! I’ve been chosen! You can be chosen too!”

Her cries fell away in the deafening downpour, and those that had gathered scattered to find shelter in the nearest buildings. Whether or not they saw something or, if they did, if they believe what they saw, remains to be seen.

The storm raged on through the night, as the creatures wandered the streets unperturbed by the rain and hail. The lights of the town flickered and then, as lightning staggered across the sky, everything went dark.

(Those that ran to find shelter found themselves stuck for the night. Below you’ll find the (randomly selected) groups. You can choose for your characters to have seen the shape in the sky, to have not seen it, or to have seen it and not believe it.

Everyone can continue/finish their event threads, as all this took place on the final day of the Faire (the 29th). You may also time-jump threads, headcanon threads, or make new threads for the plot drop. The event officially ends on August 5th, at which time please do not make any more event starters, however you can continue all threads until completion.)

KENZIE’S CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO:

AXEL

His first little gift is for the Dec. 24th and they open together. Matching PJ sets that Kenzie and Koda also have. A bunch of candies and hot chocolates and marshmallows and some popcorn for a Christmas movie evening. His main gift on Dec. 25th is personal and handmade. Using the paper he drew a line on when they first met, Kenzie has turned it into a piece of art. Silhouettes of themselves are reaching towards one another’s hands over the line, it’s framed for him to have in his office if he wants to. And the other part of the gift is a little funnier, handmade coupons she put together that he can ‘cash in’ at any time. For affection or spicy times.  @axel-mathis

DANNY

Kenzie knows Danny isn’t sentimental so she’s opted for a small handmade card that shows a simple appreciation for his willingness to forgive her and try his hand at being a father despite the slip up. It literally just says “You’re doing good x” Inside the card is a coupon he can use at the amusement park in the summer with Koda.   @danny--anderson

RONNIE

Kenzie has done a dotwork piece of art that depicts Ronnie and Kenzie as kids, using a photograph that was taken at one of the many family gatherings. Hidden throughout the dots is a tiny inside joke that says “We’re probably not even cousins.” because of their complicated family tree. @ronniexcameron

BUNNY

Ever proud of her cousin’s musical gifts, Kenzie has recreated one of Bunny’s EP covers on a larger canvas. Her name is painted in a way that looks like it’s neon and glowing and the whole piece is very pink.  @bunny-castillo

DYLAN

Inside an actual whisk, Kenzie has put chocolates and little candy canes and wrapped the whole thing together. Also hidden inside the whisk is a very small folded bit of dotwork art that is of Dylan and Kenzie as kids. On the back it reads, “A sister I didn’t know I needed.” @dylandunsmore

ANGEL 

Kenzie has put together a box of all the things Angel needs to do stick ‘n’ poke tattoos. There’s a few pieces of paper in there of original designs from back in the day that she put in there as a keepsake for her. Not wanting to be too emotional, the card reads “You pack a good punch, proud of you.”  @angeloconnor

FINN

Finn’s is real simple, a pack of smokes and a bottle of Irish whiskey and some chocolates. All Kenzie put in the card was a ‘x’ which says more than enough for the grumpy old man that she loves. @finn-oconnor

DJ 

Kenzie put the gas money in a card that she couldn’t give him at the time for the ride to Del’s place. And she bought him some gummies from Lazy Daze because she knows how overworked he is. @dougie-anderson

DUSTY

Probably finding the joke way too funny, she bought Dusty a cheap looking engagement ring and tied a small card to it that said ‘It should’ve been you.’ She’s probably playing into the joke too much but she can’t resit it. As a genuine present she bought him some smokes and a lighter that says ‘If you wanna fuck, smile when you give this back to me’. @dusty-anderson

RHYS

Rhys has a small collection of Bee themed gifts. Bee socks, honey flavored chocolates and honey whiskey. As a joke there’s a coupon in his card for a chuck’e’cheese meal. @rhysles​

So I watched Encanto and got way too attached to this family. This is the result...

Home is Wherever I'm With You: The Mendez Family

Alma and Pedro Madrigal attempted to flee from Shuriki's reign of terror, fearing that she would discover their magic and bring harm to them and their triplet newborns.

Well, Shuriki eventually found out, and gave chase to the Madrigals and others who were attempting to escape into the northern kingdom of Misthaven. Just as they crossed the Conteteda River to catch a ferry, disaster struck, the soldiers caught them, and Pedro sacrificed himself.

You know how the story goes from there.

A year after the family pieced itself back together thanks to Mirabel, the Madrigal's were thriving, and the town flourishing. Alma even agreed to lower the magic surrounding it, allowing outsiders in and allowing the residents to explore the surrounding towns. This was only done after it was revealed that Shuriki was dead and Princess Elena had assumed the throne.

Bruno saw a vision of the family being swept up in Regina's curse, and though the family tried to re-fortify Encanto, they were unsuccessful, and swept away to Storybrooke.

Thankfully, the curse kept the family together, and they are some of the most beloved members of the town.

Alma Paula (María Cecilia Botero) is a retired teacher, and a close friend of Granny.

Pedro Miguel (Fabián Ríos) was tragically killed in the Storybrooke Mines. His death was what lead to their closure.

Julieta Sara (Angie Cepeda) runs the Storybrooke Bakery, and is the go-to for celebration desserts.

Pepa Antonella (Judy Reyes) is the town's Meteorologist, and her predictions are known to be freakishly accurate. Isn't it a shame she doesn't work for a national network...?

Bruno Juan (John Leguizamo) is a writer for the newspaper, but has stacks of fiction books that he's nervous about sending to publishers.

Isabela Ines (Sofia Carson) is a florist for Game of Thornes. She's the wild one of the family, frequenting The Rabbit Hole with Lacey and Ruby.

Luisa Daniella (Sarah Robles) is a college student, and also works at the Storybrooke Bookstore as a way to relax.
