#memoryquilts I wanted to share an update for those of you interested in my process on moms quilt. (I’m using her tee shirts and other non traditional type cloth to create this quilt) I’m in the process of packing up my home so supplies and space are at a minimum. Which is why I wanted to work small. I’m making a lot of different “bases” using my own cotton fabrics in neutral colors. It’s fun because I’m not doing the same thing and can experiment. The next thing I had to decide was how/when I would keep the layers together. Again to work small, I had to think about this. I decided to use moms stretchy jeans which are not thick like regular jeans, as the backing. I layered the work, basted heavily, and started quilting. I’ll explain in another post how I plan on attaching all the different blocks to make a blanket size quilt. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my memory quilt. Memory Pillow Sharing another project using moms clothes. This pillow is made from strips of her poly/cotton stretch tee shirts. I used a lot of the bottom bands. I also used the plackets with buttons from the silky blouses. There’s even 2 socks woven in. Mom had to wear her white socks to bed. Believe it or not, I still had her pillow (I KNOW you’re not surprised by this) so I cut that in half to make this smaller rectangle shape. #memoryquilts I’m in the process of making flowers now for some of the blocks. My mom loved her garden. The pink, teal and yellow fabrics are from her tee shirts. Im stitching them down to a piece of cotton or linen to stabilize them. I’ll make a bunch then decide how to arrange them. #memoryquilts This is what’s left of my moms clothing. She’s gone 7 years now and it’s taken me this long to do something with them. It’s a lot of tee shirts, a few silky blouses and a pile of stretch jeans. I could Not part with them. No goodwill drops for me. I see her in this pile. Her life… The day she held her great granddaughter Ida, her namesake, for the first time. The days she sat in the yard crocheting and reading. The nights we had our weekly dinners. Visitors stopping by, gardening, cooking me eggplant. The list is endless. But what can you do with poly/cottons, stretchy fabrics and silky polys? I once made a tee shirt quilt for a woman that lost her son but I wanted something a bit different, like mom. I plan on wrapping myself in this quilt like I do with her old fleece jacket. I still think of her every day, and miss her terribly. I’m not on here much these days, a lot is going on right now but stitching on this brings me so much peace. I wanted to share and show @spiritcloth what I’ve been doing. I found you a few months back and your work has inspired me to think outside the box. Recently found inspiration from a wonderful creative. Her name is @petalplum. If you feel like your world is a bit wonky and you just need a time out, look her up! Her voice is ever so soothing and her stitching will make you run to your sewing basket and start a slow stitching project. This is called kantha-boro-sashiko style stitching.
