FAR CRY 6

IT WASN'T THE ONLY COPY: Juan Cortez x fem!reader

Summary: Since Juan forced her to stay on the couch until her wound is fully healed, she had to find something interesting to do.

Notes: English isn't my first language. I apologize for any mistake I may have made while I wrote this short story.

My Spanish isn't the best so if you find a word / phrase used in the wrong context or anything please let me know so I can improve :)

Ever since she got hurt back in Isla Santuario, Juan forced her into safety, not letting her engage in any fight at all. And even though it felt nice to know he cared for her that much, staying behind while the others took care of the dirty work - the fun work - quickly became boring and a bit annoying.

Even after they got back to Zamok Archipiélago, she still had to stay behind and let Dani go after the Monteros alone. Nor Clara, nor Juan wanted her to run around - even though the Jefa was still doing that with a not fully healed bullet wound.

The furthest place Juan let her go to, was his office - otherwise she had to rest on the couch above it, slowly rotting away. After she kept on insisting, he finally let her help him work on resolvers and supremos, while they shared a glass of alcohol. That's where she put together the small lamp, what she could attach to books and read comfortably - because the lighting 'upstairs' was shit.

Juan was out again - getting more alcohol to drink or cigars to smoke most likely, because those past few weeks he barely left her side. So she spent her time doing something more fun than getting crazy on the damn couch - she was reading with her back against the pillow and her legs stretched out to not put pressure on her stomach.

She was already halfway through it when she heard the footsteps, and they got closer and closer until she could clearly see Juan, who was on his way toward her with a bottle of whisky.

She put her book aside. A great bottle of whisky was a rarity in Yara.

"Back already?" she asked with a smile as she sat up carefully, making some space for Juan on the couch.

"Sí. Jefa needed some help with the comms, but I still got something for you." he explained as he sat down.

"Finally some good whisky." she said happily as she leaned forward to rest her chin on Juan's shoulder while he poured some alcohol for the both of them. "Does Clara need help with anything? And how's Dani doing in Madrugada?"

"Don't worry about it cariño, they can take care of themselves."

"I can take care of myself too." she explained, wanting to get out and do something fun.

"I know you can." she took one glass from him. "But until you're ready to go out and fuck Castillo's shit up again, you'll stay here and get drunk with me."

She drank up the whisky, enjoying the taste it left in her mouth, then let Juan light up a cigar.

"I just wanna go out and shoot at some FND assholes."

"Sí, corazón, I want that too and I can't wait for you try the resolver weapons I put together for you, but a good guerrilla is never impatient."

She raised her eyebrows. "That's not even a rule!"

"It is."

"No, it's not!"

"It is when you're such a loca guerrilla who wants to run around with a wound like that." he gave her his cigar, sharing it with her as he looked at her stomach what was still covered in bandages under one of Juan's shirts.

"I don't want to run around, I just want to help."

"And you'll help by being Juan's asistente in the office."

She gave the cigar back to Juan and put her chin back on his shoulder. His free arm hugged her close, being surprisingly gentle.

"Fine. I can take a few more days." she agreed. "As long as I'll be your asistente."

She pulled her legs up, getting closer to Juan, trying to enjoy his presence. He'll get back to his office soon - he always does, so she tried to enjoy every minute being close to him while he smoked.

Her movement made the book move as well. That was the reason why Juan noticed it in the first place, just as he finished his cigar.

"Is that my book?"

She grabbed it and gave it to him. The small lamp she put together was still on it.

"Yeah. I wanted to read something interesting while I was healing."

"I thought I destroyed the last copy of it when that hijo de puta called the FND on me at the bar."

"I put one aside." she explained. "You talked about Kyrat a lot, but you never mentioned the KGB before. Or the Colombian guerrillas."

"If I talk about them now will you sit on your ass 'til you're fine?"

She chuckled.

"You make it sound like I'm annoying you."

"You're never annoying me, cariño. But your damn stubbornness does."

"If I wasn't this stubborn," she began as she pressed a kiss into the crook of his neck. "I wouldn't be dating Juan Cortez. So you better love my stubbornness too, mi amor."

He leaned down and kissed her forehead. She sighed, breathing in his presence and took his hand in hers, intertwining their fingers.

"Did you make this?" he asked, referring to the lamp.

"Yeah. You had some scrap around so I got creative."

"That's why you're my favourite asistente." he praised and her heart fluttered. "So where were you?"

"I was reading abbout the Colombian guerrillas when you came in."

So Juan started to talk about it. And the next thing too what came up in his book -- and the next... He spoke and she listened. They drank up their whisky and smoked a few more cigars.

When Juan was around to talk to and listen to, she didn't mind at all that he was so damn protective of her.

Dani comes to a Realization after Clara was shot. Killing Anton will only cause more deaths. At least with him president it will end in only a few years.

Killing him would cause war and death within the country. Clara even Said it herself. She claimed she would stay and fight for the people but really she would only kill the people.

The only hope for yara is Diego. The small little Castillo can save everything in only a few years. He just needs someone to take care of him..

Really teach him right from wrong. Standing next to Juan she thinks. She thinks hard. About the future. About the deaths that have happened. And the deaths that will happen. She looks at Juan. She knows the moment he finds out about her wanting to back out he and mama won't hesitate to put her down....

"for yara" are the last words Juan hears before his body falls limp. His head slams into the floor. Churro barks and pulls at her pant leg.

She pushed him away and grabs a radio.

And sighs her freedom away for the better of yara. And for Diego.

Dani, Clara, Juan, Camila and Bembe trying to flirt and throwing pick up lines at the reader.

Dani:

Dani has no idea how to flirt, let's be honest. She isn't into the whole flirt thing and wooing someone isn't included in her skills. But she was so fascinated by you when you joined Libertad, that she had to find a way to know you better.

She would ask you at the beginning to join her in her missions. Clara immediately understood what she was trying to do and decided to help a bit. Dani's way to flirt is a bit awkward and looks more like an uncomfortable effort to start a conversation. You don't really mind, you actually find it adorable and enjoy it. We're talking about Dani, how could you not?

She isn't good with pick up lines. She even convinced herself to consult Juan about it but she didn't really like the answers she got. One day she approached you while you were sitting with Guapo next to you. You enjoyed petting the little crocodile. She stood there nervously and said something like "Are you the cargo we're looking for 'cause I would die for you." You face turned a bright red. You have never heard Dani use a pick up line to you before. You actually like this side of her, it's dorky and adorable.

Clara:

The strong and beautiful princess of Libertad. She is an excellent leader and a fighter. She is trying her best to free Yara but there is a specific someone that distracts her from time to time. That's you.

Clara couldn't take her eyes of you when you told her you wanted to join Libertad. Strong, independent and loyal. Everything Clara is looking for she has found it in you. All that's left is to confess. Juan teases her a lot about it but tries to help her in any way he can. Clara has no idea how to flirt. Her flirting abilities aren't as poor as Dani's but they aren't great either. She tries to keep you next to her, saying she needs someone trustworthy to share her plans to take Yara back.

She has no idea how pick up lines work and she isn't a fan of them either. Although you somehow always laugh when Juan tells you some of his so she decides to give it a try. While you were looking at a map of Yara she approached you casually trying not to look nervous. You asked her if she needed something but instead of replying to your question she said something like "I always thought Yara was breathtaking, until I met you". You looked at her really confused and blushed like never before. You actually thought you were dreaming, what a wonderful dream though!

Juan:

This man is a mastermind, everyone knows that. He has a solution for almost every problem and is a master in flirting. Somehow he always knows what to say and never feels nervous or awkward. All that before he met you of course.

Juan had many partners in his life, he has admitted that before. Even to you. He didn't want to but he owed to be honest with you. Clara has scolded him a lot of times for staring at you or throwing some sexual innuendos your way. You didn't mind though, you like Juan's sense of humor and his presence in general. Juan never had to try much in order to make come true what he had in mind. But with you, it was different. He would often invite you to help him with his supremos and keep him company. You never said no. Dani would remind you at times what he was probably thinking but you insisted he was very kind and friendly.

Until one night. You were helping him work on some of his fascinating ideas. It was an excuse, just like every time, to have you next to him. He had never felt so anxious before. You were pretty different from all the people he had met. Smart, trustworthy and with a great sense of humor. You caught him staring at you and started thinking that you probably did something wrong. So you asked him. You never got an answer though. "What if instead of this thing you'd let me do you?" Your eyes widened hearing this. You knew Juan said stuff like that all the time but this time you knew it wasn't a joke. He was actually flirting with you and he meant what he said. Guess Dani was right after all.

Camila:

Espada doesn't have time for flirting and getting into romantic situations. She isn't very fond of that stuff either. She kinda changed her mind when Dani introduced her to you.

You and Espada got along almost from the start. Even though she wasn't easy going you gave her time and space, always being patient. When she realized she had feelings for you she became more relaxed and trusted you enough to talk to you about her family troubles. Her way of flirting with you was putting up with you. Being kind and more polite than usual. You liked this side of Camila. It made you feel quite special and you enjoyed it.

Espada fails harder than Dani when it comes to pick up lines. Dani made fun of her when she told she was gonna use on you. It didn't seem like Camila at all but she wanted to give it a try. You were talking with Dani, she was explaining to you some of Clara's plan. That was when Espada approached you. Dani left you two alone. She actually looked nervous and you were pretty confused. "Uh... If for every time I thought of you we freed part of Yara, then we would have taken our island back a long time ago". You titled your head for a moment trying to understand what she meant until it hit you. Your fave turned red, you never expected this from Espada.

Bembe:

Bembe is a little mischievous god. He has his ways of getting what he wants, including relationships as well. He has mastered the art of flirting a long time ago so he always knows what to say.

How on earth did you get yourself into this situation? Oh yeah right, Dani. One of the mission included meeting this man. He looked pretty suspicious to you but he was immediately mesmerized by you. You didn't seem to like the way he talked but there was something intriguing about this man. Dani had to leave you with him in order to complete a mission. You were looking at Bembe, his tattoos, the color of his hair. He caught you staring so he smirked at you making you lower your head.

He approached you quietly and sat next to you. You looked at him with the corner of your eye. He stared talking about things he has done in his life, terrible things. He told you he didn't have a choice but you didn't really believe him. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder making you look at him. "From all the diamonds I have seen in my life, none of them were as pretty as your eyes". Your face turned a bright red color. This man was damn smooth. You just hoped Dani would return soon.

FC6 – Fluff HC’s

Guess who’s back after months of nothing?? Life basically handed me the stress cards over the whole end of the year and overall life’s been busy and stressful on top of burnout and just general lack of inspo atm. I wanted so badly to finish flufftober and even do some wholesome christmas headcanons and new years stuff– anyway yea lemme know if it's even worth doing those since it's already 2023 n idk i’m thinking of just starting fresh.

Also yes i’m still planning on finishing flufftober i just need to do some generic stuff to get back into the feel of things. I’m so sorry for all the delays and the quality, i hated how these turned out but it’s gonna be a while before i feel confident again :( thank you for reading regardless <3

Dani Rojas

As much as Dani loves fighting for libertad and freeing her country, her chest physically aches at spending time away from you. She’s always so tired when she returns to camp but she never hesitates to come and snuggle up to you regardless.

You mostly get to spend nights together, but those are spent with delicious homemade food and old romantic movies from the fifties, back when Yara had its glory days (and there’s barely any new films that aren’t obsessed with María).

It doesn’t matter that she mainly falls asleep on you, not when she’s snoring in your ear or cuddled up into your chest– it only makes you want to wrap her in your arms tighter and hold her all night.

Her favourite kisses are the morning ones, she’s recovered from her exhaustion the previous night and can instead spend a few precious hours smothering your face in kisses before she has to leave again.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you don’t have missions together either and each time you manage to steal another shipment or liberate another checkpoint, Dani is always squeezing you in a death grip as she hugs you so tight you might die.

Dani always wears your clothes around camp, mainly because she doesn’t own anything that’s not sweat drenched armour but she’s also working on her own collection of your shirts, hoodies and cosy pyjama pants because she just wants another reason to be close to you.

Juan Cortez

Any time Juan has to do any mission that requires him to leave his bunker, it’s a given you’re coming with him every time. He’ll complain about not being able to send his network of spies to do this work for him, and that the only reason you’re here is to make his workload easier but he’s never been good at lying when it comes to you.

He actually loves going on missions with you, and not just the boring dead drops but getting right into the thick of it as you both take down helicopters with his supremo’s (and some of your own designs) and watch as trucks explode.

It makes him feel like he’s reliving the glory days, feeling infinitely younger and happier than he’s been in a while but he knows it's not because of any fighting and that it’s really having you in his life that makes his old man's heart come to life.

On his good days he’s always a bit of a flirt regardless of how bad his skills are but that doesn’t stop him from cheesily blowing kisses, giving winks and cracking sex jokes every second. However, if you decide to actually kiss him– all that confidence goes away and he can be bashful that someone as amazing and beautiful as you could love an old timer like him (guapo is there for comfort dw).

You always spoil him with hugs whenever he’s too focused on his workbench, coming up to hug him from behind with your chin on his head until he finally caves in for the night.

But of course, his favourite moments with you are on his not so good days, when the loneliness is too much and he drowns in sorrows and whiskey but you’re always there to spend hours cuddling on his couch with a stack of comics to read together and your arms wrapped around him.

Camila ‘Espada’ Montero 

Camila is probably the most hard working person in Yara– if not the most. She’s always working on training new recruits, holding the farm together, keeping Philly from using too much ‘magic’ and actively taking down Anton’s prick of a nephew. And yet, she still somehow makes all the effort to spend time with you because she loves you dearly.

She’s innovative and smart, always turning her duties around camp into little dates for the two of you to spend some precious time together. Whether it’s out scouting for Alejandro or fixing up fences on rundown farms, you’re always there by her side.

You have some of the best memories cracking jokes whilst you fixed old, broken windows and replaced soil on tobacco fields so new crops might grow. She’s always surprising you with kisses when you stand up from heavy lifting and she’s always carrying you on her shoulder when she’s decided you’re done for the day and need to head home.

Being with her makes you see a version of Yara that is free, where you don’t have to fight but can enjoy your time together without fear. You always cook homemade meals together, her knife skills coming in handy for chopping whilst you prepare the meats and you’re always quick to steal food from her whilst she steals kisses.

Both of you work tirelessly around camp so cuddling and sleeping are essentially the same thing. You take turns spooning, always wrapped in each other's arms, even on hot summer nights as neither of you can sleep unless you have each other close.

Philly always teases you two but that doesn’t change how you smother her with affection around camp or dance with her at festivals and parties, but everyone has come to love how perfect you are together. 

Carlos Montero

Family drama just gives Carlos the biggest headache, if he’s not worried about Camila putting her life in danger, it's Alejo running around chasing a Castillo when he should be helping his people. But that’s where you come in, ready to drag him away from it all, even if it’s only for an afternoon in the mountains of Lozanía.

Like the grumpy old man he is, you just know there will be a string of complaints about his knees or having to walk for so long but it all dies down quickly when he sees the gorgeous views and the fact he gets to enjoy your company after so long holding up in camp.

He’s not one to be sentimental, never been the one for dates and would much rather go hunting or mentor the other farmers but you’ve taught him to slow down and enjoy the smaller moments in life. Carlos ends up enjoying the little picnics you bring him on, or the horse rides spent aimlessly wandering the patches of forest that are untouched by the FND.

Saying ‘thank you’ isn’t in stubborn old man vocabulary but he’s good with physical touch, and kisses to your neck or the back of your hand is his way of telling you he loves you and he loves spending time with you.

Of course, he loves cuddles too even if he won’t admit it. You love to hug him after an afternoon of hard work, when the sun is too hot to keep working and the farm cools down for late lunch and afternoon naps. It’s just so comfy to curl up and sleep on his chest as you listen to his ragged breathing and the occasional grumble when he talks to himself.

His ability to wrangle a cocodrilo has never surprised anyone, in fact he always draws a crowd as folks cheer him on but no one was ready for what followed after as you wiped the blood from his cheek and placed a kiss on his cheek for all of the farm to see.

I’ve finally read Far Cry: Les Larmes d’Esperanza!

It’s a French graphic novel set in the Far Cry 6 universe. The story follows Juan Cortez who travels to the fictional country of Santa Costa, where three factions are fighting for power and a new mining resource called “Tantale” has recently been discovered, to offer his services as a mercenary… and guerrilla expert.

The book takes place before the game and is officially described as a prequel, but it can totally be read as a standalone. Most of the characters never appear in Far Cry 6, and even though what happens in Santa Costa is reminiscent of the situation in Yara, the story is self-contained and doesn’t affect the game.

Far Cry: Les Larmes d’Esperanza (“the tears of Esperanza”) is dispensable... but enjoyable, especially if you’re a Far Cry 6 and/or Juan Cortez fan! I won’t spoil the plot twists but I still want to talk a bit about continuity and the other Far Cry characters who appear in the book. Minor spoilers below…

In my opinion, Juan’s characterization doesn’t contradict who he is in Far Cry 6. The book talks about his addiction problems while showing how effective and talented at his “job” he can be, and expands a little on his backstory. For example, his childhood is very briefly mentioned and it’s “revealed” where he got the inspiration for the Supremo backpacks (or their names, at least): comic books.

I initially assumed the events of the book were set several years before the game because I thought Juan looked younger, but his adventures in Santa Costa happened shortly before he started working with Libertad. Antón is barely mentioned but already in power and, according to Juan, they are approximately the same age.

In Far Cry 6, a letter from Willis Huntley revealed that he and Juan had worked together in the past. In Les Larmes d’Esperanza, they do it again. Here is Willis (on the right) with a formally dressed Juan:

Longinus also makes an appearance. In the game, he was acquainted with Sean McKay. In the book, he has apparently known Juan for a long time and frequently supplies him with equipment.

For some reason, Hurk is here too and works for Juan at one point. There was no known connection between the two characters in Far Cry 6, so this really looks like fan service to me… Still, it’s always fun to see Hurk and it’s not impossible that he and Juan know each other, after all.

Juan also sees Vaas and Pagan in a fever dream… for no particular reason.

That said, the book feels more like a derivative work than an integral part of Far Cry 6, so those “fan service moments” didn’t bother me as much as they usually do.

Finally, after Juan’s mission in Santa Costa is over, Clara approaches him, which “explains” how and why he started working with her.

However, Guapo sadly never makes an appearance…
