requested by @lexkent: the scene in "Shattered" where Lana sees Lex on the ground in the stable sitting curled into himself, and she looks anguished to see him in such a state, and she's so kind and compassionate to him
+ bonus Lana, after literally almost dying:

Lex Luthor (Smallville) - Short Story : Chapter 2
Tumblr media
"What do you mean the blue one, there’s like a million blue shirts here!! This is ridiculous Clark!!”
You were sifting through his closet and he chuckled, stepping through the door. He had on pants and he playfully pushed you out of the way so he could grab a shirt. You grumbled, shoving him the best you could given your stature compared to his. Eventually you gave up, dropping on his bed.
“High schoolers driving you crazy?” Clark asked.
“You have no idea. This teaching thing is tougher than I thought. “
You always came over when you needed to vent. With Mrs, Kent off on official political business, and Lois following her lead, Clark was the only one to keep you entertained.
You stared up at the ceiling, twisting your palm.
“Clark, did you ever consider telling Lex your secret?”
The topic made him freeze.
From the look on his face, you knew he didn’t expect it. But he seemed a bit contemplative.
“There was a time I wanted too. But that’s in the past.”
He always did that. For a moment you would see genuine emotion, then he’d become cold. They must have been really close for him to become so closed off just at the thought of him.
It’s been almost two months since Lex learned of your secret and you half expected to be kidnapped in the night by a group of assassins or ninjas. But neither had happened. Since that day, there has been no kind of interaction. A week after the incident you received a bouquet of flowers, but that was it.
Nothing more.
No grand earthly takeover or heinous crime to turn you into a lab rat.
“I’m going to see him tomorrow.”
Clark turned to you.
“You can’t. (Y/N) he’s dangerous.”
“That’s what you keep saying, but I’m not going to sit around waiting for this danger. I need to confront him. At least then we can have a gist of what this grand scheme is.”
“(Y/N).”
“Don’t use that tone with me. I’m not a kid, Clark. I’m doing this and I’m going alone.”
“If you think that I’ll let you get anywhere close to him without backup then you-”
“I’m not asking for your permission.”
Clark became silent.
“You can’t protect me from everything. Clark I’ve been scared all my life. That day I..I realized that as terrifying as it was, you won’t always be there.”
He looked sad. It wasn’t your intention to make him feel guilty. You just needed him to know.
“I don’t ever want to feel like that again. I have these abilities, hiding out isn’t going to make me feel safe. I need to learn to fight my own battles. Starting with Lex.”
Clark could probably tell that you weren’t going to let this go. He looked a bit defeated, but he still wore a smile, taking a seat next to you.
“Just be careful.”
You nod.
“Always am.”
He grinned at that and you raised a brow.
“Why are you smiling like that?”
“Because you’re probably my only friend who doesn’t run head first into dangerous situations.”
“That's literally how you die in the movies.”
“I’m glad at least one of us understands that.”
“Yeah, cause it’s not like you risk your life for people for a living.”
“Touche.”
You just shoved him, laughing.
The conversation was expected. Clark encouraged you.
The following day after your last teaching period you’d sucked up all your bravery and marched right over to the Luthor mansion. You wish the determination you had before would return, because you were half hoping the guard at the gate would deny you entry so you could say at least you tried. That was not the case. He walked you in, and as the double doors opened and closed, a part of you just wanted to run.
You stood like a frightened deer before Lex. He was seated comfortably at his desk.
“I’m surprised to see you. I was under the impression that you would never stand before me again given our last encounter.”
He looked smug, and you wanted nothing more to knock that smile off his face. But being there, it was crippling. Your palms feel sweaty, and you kept swallowing in hopes that it would provide enough saliva for you to form words.
You couldn’t do it.
You couldn’t say anything.
Maybe he saw how panicked you were, because his smile dropped, and he stood slowly. He took a step forward and you took one back. Lex stopped.
“I..I..”
Damn it, you just needed to speak. Why was it so hard?
Lex slipped his hands into his pockets.
“I’m not going to come after you if that’s what you’re wondering.” You looked at him, clearly taken aback. That look, he supposed he deserved it. He couldn’t erase what he’d done in the past. Experimenting on meteor infected people. Although he’d given that up, the pain those experiments caused, the blood on his hands, it was not so easy to wash away.
“I saw the way you looked that day. You had no reason to help me. You could have just as easily let me walk out of there. If I died, then your secret would be safe and you would have no doubt survived. Your fear was paralyzing, I could see it on your face yet you still decided to risk it for someone as tainted as me. I’m not sure if it was bravery on your part or just pity that you felt for me. Whatever it was, I’m grateful. You saved my life and dozens of others.”
Never in your life did you expect to receive this kind of praise from Lex Luthor.
Feeling a little less petrified, you finally spoke.
“I’m glad that you’re okay.”
Even if he was a man with many mistakes, he was still a man. Maybe it’s because of your powers that you’ve always been able to sympathize.
“Thank you also for the flowers.” That part was more of a mutter and Lex cracked a smile.
“I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I got a bit of everything.”
It was a nice gesture.
“I like Asters.”
That statement is said a bit more boldly. Much better than when you stepped in.
Lex nods.
“I’ll remember that for the next near death experience. “
You couldn’t help but giggle.
“Hopefully the occasion won’t be as dire the next time you decide to grace me with a floral arrangement.”
He couldn’t help but smile at himself.
“Hopefully.”
He agrees.
