Summary

“We should date,” Steve pronounced, five beers in to their first solo hang out since the world had exploded and Eddie had been deemed recovered enough to be sitting on his own. You and me,” Steve clarified. “That would really give Dustin and Robin something to think about.” Steve had been venting for an embarrassingly (adorably?) long time about how much Dustin managed to mock him for being single and how Robin wasn’t much better. “It’s the end of the world and you still can’t get a date, he says, that little punk!” Steve had exclaimed indignantly as he spilled some of his beer gesturing at the nerve of Dustin Henderson. “Then he suggested that maybe my hair was out of style. My hair! My jeans, I’d accept, if our mall hadn’t been destroyed by the Mind Flayer and if I could go shopping, I might do some updating. But my hair?!” Steve had turned with a manic glint in his eyes to make sure Eddie understood just how far across the line Dustin had ventured.

To say I’m literally surrounded by this man’s life work and legacy every day is an beyond an understatement. Many of you are and may not even realize it. His Prophet 5 synthesizer from 1977 literally changed the music game (a phrase too many people use too loosely). There was no compact, polyphonic, easy to program synthesizer that could also save your patches and sounds to recall them later before it. For God’s sake, the man invented MIDI!! The connectivity protocol that allows just about every piece of gear in our studios to communicate with each other to this day.. and gave it away! His super rare Studio 440 sampler / sequencer from 1986 is the grandfather to a few of your favorite beat machines, is still sought after by collectors to this day and is generally considered priceless, as no one who actually has one ever lets it go. Fast forward to 2022 and classic Prophet 5’s (along with a TON of his other synths) are still being manufactured and sold, his collars with Pioneer DJ can be seen on stages, DJ booths and stages all over the world, has created modern classics with fellow synth god Tom Oberheim (their JUST announced OBX8 is the biggest story in synthesizers in probably the last 10 years) and he still had more in store.
