Headtober Day 10
One of Katya's favorite October activities involves picking pumpkins to carve. Although she enjoys the decorating process, she isn't too keen on the taste of pumpkins. She does, however, love roasting and eating their seeds. So, after carving the pumpkins, she always keeps the seeds to roast and eat them.

Femme Fatale Fête Quarterfinals
Tumblr media
Jessica Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit)
Bio: A Toon nightclub singer wrongly accused of shady dealings and turning on her husband.
Fans say: She's an ace icon who loves her husband because he's funny. She fulfils the femme fatale archetype in the hardboiled narrative of the story but she had a heart of gold. "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way."
Katya Michailov Goncharova (Goncharov)
Bio: A complex tragic martyr wrapped up in the trappings of a hardboiled graymoral fatale.
Fans say: Classic film femme noir- -- papers have been written about her as an iconic iteration of the archetype

[exert of a conversation between Martin Scorsese, Paul Shrader, and Roger Ebert from 1976 regarding Scorsese’s 1973 film Goncharov]
Tumblr media
Scorsese: Because there's a lot of violence to this picture, some of the New York reviews are calling it an exploitation film. Jesus! I went flat broke making this film! My films haven't made a lot of money, you know? Right now, I'm living off my next film.
Schrader: If it's an exploitation film, I wish we had a dollar for every time you were told it would never be a success at all. That screenplay got turned down by everybody.
Scorsese: We showed it to some New York media educators, and I thought we'd get lynched! We showed it to some student editors...there was this wise guy there I recognized from a screening we had of "Alice." He asks whether, after all my success, I'm about ready to fall on my ass. I've hardly gotten started!
Schrader: You got zero valid reactions immediately after the screenings. The immediate response is usually very visceral and angry, but I remember, this one, silence. The anger came later. But, if this film weren't controversial, there'd be something wrong with the country.
Ebert: What you give us in this guy, Goncharov, who comes from nowhere - we get hardly any background - eventually we realize he's seething inside, he's got all this violence bottled up....
Scorsese: And he goes back again and again to where the violence is. One of the reviewers, I think it was Andrew Sarris, said how many times can you use [The Clocks] as a metaphor for hell? But that's the thing about hell - it goes on and on. And he couldn't get out of it. But you're right that we don't tell you where he comes from, or what his story is. Obviously, he comes from somewhere and he picked up these problems along the way.
Schrader: You told me you wrote it that way after thinking about the way they handled "In Cold Blood." They tell you all about Perry Smith's background, how he developed his problems, and immediately it becomes less interesting because his problems aren't your problems, but his symptoms are your symptoms.
Ebert: Pauline Kael has said that Scorsese, Robert Altman and Francis Ford Coppola are the three most interesting directors in the country right now - and that it might be due to their Catholicism, that after Watergate, the nation feels a sort of guilt and needs to make a form of reparation, and that Catholics understand guilt in a way that others don't, that they were brought up on it.
Scorsese: Guilt. There's nothing you can tell me about guilt.
Schrader: I've got a lot of Protestant guilt.
Scorsese: You can't make movies any more in which the whole country seems to make sense. After Vietnam, after Watergate, it's not just a temporary thing; it's a permanent thing the country's going through. All the things we held sacred - the whole Time-Life empire...whoosh! Well, Time's still left.
Tumblr media
Ebert: In a lot of your movies, there's this… ambivalent attitude, toward women. The men are fascinated by women, but they don't quite know how to relate to them...
Scorsese: The goddess-whore complex. You're raised to worship women, but you don't know how to approach them on a human level, on a sexual level. That's the thing with Katya, with Sofia, he loves them but he doesn’t really see them as people. They go from garbage to goddess and back and forth.
Ebert: I’m reminded of Katya with the candles in her bedroom.
Scorsese: Exactly, she's like a saint to him! He can't imagine these people treating her the way they do. Before he goes to avenge her, it's almost like he cleanses himself, like in "The Virgin Spring" when Max von Sydow scourges himself with the branches before he goes out to avenge his daughter's death.
Schrader: We actually had that shot in the movie, and we took it out. Goncharov whips himself with a towel before he goes out with his guns. We took it out because it looked a little forced and unnatural.
Scorsese: But the Catholic thing? I suppose there are a lot of Catholic references in the film, even if they're only my own personal reference. Like the moment when he burns the flowers before he goes out to kill. And when he's buying the guns and the dealer lays them out one at a time on the velvet, like arranging the altar during Mass.

I saw that Anya's birthday was on the 1st and the birthday threads. Now I was wondering when is the birthday of Katya and Maggie? And are you going to make birthday threads too?
Tbh that's a really good question I usually give my character the day they were created as birthday because I'm always to lazy to think of a date and if you look at it the day they were created is something like their birthday sooo yeah. The problem is sometimes I forget to write it down and exactly this happened with Katya and Maggie.
But I already know in which season they were born in. Katya is a summer child and Maggie is a winter child. For Maggie I was thinking something in february and for Katya july-august.
I decided for this months because I associate the elements water and air with Maggie and fire and earth with Katya with their primary element being water and fire. This made it easier for Maggie cause the only month in winter that has water as element is from the 20th february. I know technically winter is till the 20th march but for me march is already spring and I don't consider it winter anymore. So this would set Maggie's birthday somewhere between the 20th february to the 29th (if it was a leap year otherwise 28th). For Katya I think I consider a day in july so something between the 23th and 31st.
If I'll be doing birthday threads too? Idk if I'm honest I really haven't thought about doing this (I mean I didn't even really thought about a specific date for their birthday). I usually don't celebrate my own birthday so it didn't really came to my mind to celebrate theirs. I think it depends more on the people I write with. If I find someone who would like to do something then yeah why not (If I don't forget it myself). The thing is both Katya and Maggie don't like to be the center of attention so I don't think they would make a party that's about them and invite people to it on their own.
Beisde that Katya never celebrated her birthday. At first she was with HYDRA and the Red Room who didn't bothered about this so she didn't even know when she was born. After she got out of there she still had no idea when her birthday was for a very long time. Almost the same with Maggie. She did live a few years with her family where her birthday was celebrated but she was still very young and after her abduction her mind got wiped so she doesn't remember anything of this. For her to find out her birthday isn't that of a problem after she was reunited with her family again. But in both cases both girls more or less grew up with never celebrating their birthday so they also wouldn't really think about this after they found out when they were born.
So yeah this could be a little problem because I honestly don't know how to write a starter with keeping this in mind. But of well it's still some time untill then so I still can come up with something.
Sorry that there's no specific answer to your question but that's all I got so far. But also thank you for the ask anon!

Despite not really liking apples that much, Katya still loves to go apple picking. She loves to bake an apple pie with the apples she picked or use them for a chocolate fondue. She mostly enjoys baking or having a fondue together with the people she loves the most.

Girls Against The World
KATYA HAD FINALLY MANAGED TO HIDE IN AN EMPTY ROOM. She leaned against the wall and let out an exhausted and annoyed sigh. She's been going to school here for a week now and the others haven't left her alone since then and all of this because of this stupid principal who had to make such a fuss.
It wasn't even about Katya herself. No, it was more about the fact that she was Steve Roger's daughter and now went to his school. He definitely had to show it off. Much to Katya's chagrin, he had held a big ceremony in the gym and proudly revealed who she was in front of the entire school. 'Welcome Katerina Rogers. She is our newest classmate and Captain America's daughter.' He proudly blared into the microphone.
Katya immediately mentally facepalmed herself. //Great..// was her only thought. Whatever the director was thinking, Katya still didn't understand, because if his plan was to make it easier for her to start school, then his plan backfired badly. Since she started school, she had no peace from the other students. She was constantly stared at and if it wasn't the so called Captain America's fans who constantly chased after her and peppering her with questions, then it was this stupid students who were teasing her about being who she was.
Katya closed her eyes for a moment and thought about how she could get out of this darn situation again. She was so deep in thought that she didn't even notice that the room wasn't empty.
KATYA HADN'T NOTICED THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER GIRL IN THE ROOM.

What a lot of people don’t seem to understand about Goncharov is that it isn’t just “another Scorsese gangster film” (which in itself is a pretty gross oversimplification), it was a crucial part of the pivotal point of his career as a director. It was Scorsese applying everything he learned about effective low-budget filmmaking from Roger Corman (who co-produced Goncharov as well, albeit uncredited) during the making of Boxcar Bertha, as well as applying John Cassavetes’ advice on making the genre films he wanted to make rather than the more documentary/autobiography works he’d done so far.
With Corman’s assistance (himself notorious for being able to stitch new films together out of scrapped footage from old ones), in 1973 he was able to finish and release two films: Mean Streets, and Goncharov, both films sharing actors, sets, even small bits of footage. Mean Streets happened to be the classic that would launch his career, and Goncharov would remain mostly forgotten until now.
Tumblr media
Now, we all know of course that Goncharov got tangled up in international copyright issues from the get-go, with the 1983 and the 1996 recolors only further complicating things as the movie got passed around to different studios, and by that point there wasn’t much Scorsese could even do to get the film back and he was tangled up in a lot of other projects (although some theorize this as one of the reasons why Scorsese would later go on to notoriously champion film restoration and preservation, knowing firsthand what it’s like to have a passion project fall through the cracks and be taken away from you).
Still, the movie did have a limited release in the US and Canada (with a pretty strong fanbase in Winnipeg, actually, for the past decades most of the available copies of Goncharov came from VHS releases in Winnipeg, although very poorly preserved), and it wasn’t terribly well received at the time either. Even if these odd strokes of fate hadn’t destroyed Goncharov’s release I doubt the film would have fared that well much the same.
Where as Mean Streets reads like a blueprint for Scorcese’s gritty masculine hits like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, Goncharov in many ways feels more in line with Scorsese’s more oddball projects like King of Comedy and Hugo, actually it really does have more in common with Hugo than his other crime films. I think part of why Goncharov’s become popular on Tumblr lately is because it’s remarkably, whimsical? It’s a weird way to describe a movie that gets so dark but, it feels way more grounded in fantasy than his other works (it even has that clock motif that Scorsese would later use in Hugo)
The name itself is a tribute to filmmaker Vasily Goncharov, a film pioneer from the Soviet Union. Goncharov was the first filmmaker to record a film using two cameras and use sound effects, he’d directed the first feature film made in Russian history as well as the first blockbuster with 1812. This was the period where Scorsese was hanging out with De Palma and it shows because there’s a lot of scenes in Goncharov that are explicitly in tribute to Goncharov’s works like Ivan the Terrible and Khas Bulat.
Some of you are wondering where do the queer elements in Goncharov come from or why is Katya unusually pro-active for a Scorsese female lead (or even why this film has a female lead at all when so many of his other works don’t really have one), that’s a side effect of this movie’s debt to Goncharov’s works, particularly Charodeyka (The Enchantress). Katya is basically Scorsese’s take on the Nastasya / Charodeyka character.
In the fifteenth century, Nikita, the vice-regent of Novgorod, and his son Yuri fall in love with Nastasya, the owner of a local inn. But Nastasya is actually the sorceress Charodeyka. The local deacon Mamirov tells Nikita’s wife about Nastasya, and the wife poisons her. She dies in Yuri’s arms, and the enraged Nikita kills Yuri - Jess Nevins, on Charodeyka (1909), description taken from The Encyclopedia of Pulp Heroes
Tumblr media
Albeit described as “evil” and being depicted as a witch, Charodeyka bears no blame for any of the tragedy that happens in the movie, she just happens to be a beautiful woman targeted by dangerous affections of men and women alike (the movie does go some way towards showing it isn’t just jealousy that drives Nikita’s wife to murder Charodeyka) while bearing a secret of her own. I’m not saying Charodeyka was a queer tragedy by any means, but it is a tragedy of doomed love affairs and toxic family relationships and that seems to be what Goncharov’s playing with (Scorsese’s Goncharov cut out the implied incest and I’d say that was for the better).
This is kind of why Katya Goncharova kinda feels a little disconnected from Goncharov’s narrative up until the point they first meet and their fates intertwine tragically. Instead of a witch, she’s a femme fatale, and it damns her much the same just as Goncharov’s past catches up to him. It isn’t quite a remake but it’s taking a lot from Charodeyka and Ivan the Terrible and Vasily Goncharov’s other works, and Scorsese didn’t quite manage to blend these influences and tributes smoothly into the story, which is why the movie is kind of all over-the-place in a way that makes describing it make it seem like it’s an epistolary shitpost, which it very much isn’t.
It’s, among all the other things people have described it as, Scorsese’s oddball love letter to his influences as well as an important yet forgotten parts of film history (it’s not for nothing that Goncharov attempts suicide by train). Obviously, for many reasons, it was never going to catch on the way Mean Streets did, but it is fascinating nonetheless and I’m glad to see it’s been rediscovered.
