would it be bad if i said i want kenric to be dead without like any plot twists or anything

hear me out

we barely get anyone actually dead, like, fintan for example. everyone thought he died, but guess what, he didn't. he is alive and well. forkle has his weird twin situation. and when someone is actually dead, they're a bad guy.

yes, i do remember that we have some good guys dead. for example calla and jolie and cyrah. but the last two we didn't see happen, and calla wasn't one of the leaders of her whole species.

anyway back to the dead bad guys: brant, vespera, umber. brant and umber's deaths weren't super monumental. yes, umber's led to tam being captured. vespera's definitely threw us off.

yeah i don't have anything else to say haha

basically yeah. kenric should be dead with no strings attached. if he randomly comes back i'm gonna kill someone (yes i'm aware that probably won't happen at this point but ya never know)

Calla has never been suited for motherhood, or at least for the motherhood of gnomes. 

   She has always been a restless gnome, and the planting of a gnomish child is always restive, for both partners in the making, and also in the rearing. She has been told since her youth that she has not the temperament to do nothing and let her child grow, sitting by it almost-rooted all the while until it comes free to walk the earth, as she must have once too. 

   But that does not mean Calla does not have children. 

   She has a child. A child whom she has shaped before it even entered a womb according to the nature of its kind. A child whom she has named, although it is a name the child will, perhaps never use. 

   She has a child. Her little bird. Her suldreen. 

   And her bird, she knows, as she takes root for the last time, has always been strong enough to fly without her.

MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM

okay but seriously

Keefe and Calla... Son and the mother he never got.

Because she may be shorter, she may not be an elf, she may be quiet, but stars.

Stars, if he doesn't look her in the eyes and mean it when she asks how he's doing and he says "Not good."

And her eyes get softly sad, but she nods, and says, "Okay."

Keefe nods.

"Get any sleep last night?"

Keefe shrugs. "Like two hours."

"I can get you something to help with that."

"If I stay asleep too long," Keefe's voice trailed off a bit. "I don't think I'll ever be able to get up."

A look crossed Calla's face, a firm one. "Don't talk like that."

Keefe scowled, a bit. "Doesn't matter what I talk like."

Calla met his gaze. "It matters to me. You matter to me."

Keefe blinked, quietly. "Oh," he said.

Calla tilted her head to the side, looking up at Keefe. "What's wrong? Doesn't anyone tell you they care how you speak?"

Keefe shrugged. "Not like that."

Calla hummed, softly, and nodded. "No one cares what I say either," she whispered, "They don't pay much attention. I'm a little too short to be included."

His brow scrunched. "Why not?"

Calla shrugged. "I'm just a gnome. A nice one, maybe, but people don't listen to gnomes. Only gnomes listen to gnomes. Elves pretend to listen, you know. They think they know what's going on. They don't, though."

She looked at him.

"You do, though."

His shoulders scrunched up towards his ears. "It's not that I'm better. I can just feel the emotions."

"A good skill," she said.

"Not for me," he answered, "I know what everyone thinks of me."

Calla's lips squinched to the side. "That's rough."

Keefe nodded, tiredly. "Fitz thinks I'm annoying. Deep down. He covers it up with a blast of fondness, so that he doesn't think I'll notice. But I do. And Sophie... stars. She hates me, loves me, worries about me. All at once. Tam hates everything about me," a chuckle scratched in his throat. "Biana's got a crush on me that she doesn't know what to do with or how to work with. But it's mostly covered by some sort of simple friendship. Marella hates me. Dex mostly hates me. I'm not likeable. People just pretend to like me."

"Well," Calla said, simply. "I like you."

She held out her hand to help him up from the ground, and he reached out and took it. He felt her feelings wash over him, like a brush of soft rain across his skin.

It was backed with a very simple emotion, gentle, soft, and overflowing.

One Keefe hadn't felt in a long while, maybe ever.

Love, his mind screamed. It's rose pink! You know that one! You know that one! It's pure, straight love! It's when someone cares without needing to! The kind that doesn't make sense! The kind that's warm!

He'd read of it in books. Heard his teachers talk about it in class.

He had never, ever, ever felt it from someone else.

It was always fondness, a sunset orange, or magenta attraction, or in Foster's case, something he could barely feel at all, but just tinged at the edges with a sort of intense pink, one solid color that never changed.

But rose pink was the stuff of fairytales.

Meant for siblings, for parents, for people who were loved.

Keefe wasn't that.

He was never that.

But right now, a gnome hanging onto his hand, was making Keefe that person.

Keefe was that person.

Today, at the very least, there was someone who loved him.

If Keefe held that very close to his heart for a long while. That's between him and a panakes tree.
