Random Hanadan/BoF Shitpost

After hearing that Love in Flames of War, a republican era cdrama had Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers/ Meteor Garden/ F4 vibes... but eventually failed to deliver on that front I rambled at @dangermousie that, actually, we SHOULD have a Hanadan version of every genre of cdrama.

No...wait...I’m joking...but also not. My reasoning for this is solid:

1) No matter what you thing of Hanadan and all it’s objectively toxic and dated glory, you can’t deny it is a hallmark in the history of shoujo manga/anime/asian drama/ live action adaptation/remake pumping machine. It paved the way for all the ItaKiss, Fated to Love You, etc...and it is still to this day a nostalgia magnet for an easy cash grab with each remake (also the latest one might be the best lol).

2) *Surrender by Cheaptricks plays in the background, talks in “there is no war in ba sing se” mode* There are no new ideas in media. Everything is a sequel, prequel, remake, reboot, retelling, soft reboot, parody, homage, the same thing over and over again but call it by another name (it’s still a rose, yeah Shakespeare, you’re a genius, congrats!).

3) Let’s face it. Dramaland is going through the lowest of lows. Cdramas are bad and boring, Kdramas are scarce and boring and Jdramas are 10 ep cute little intros to the story you really wanna see that’s about to begin...at the end of ep10, last episode, no 2nd season. So, they might as well try Every Hanadan Set Everywhere all at Once.

So, without further ado, introducing...every genre of Cdrama Hanadan (with crazy plot eggs for some and none for others bc I say so):

Starting with contemporary…

1) Reverse hanadan where the fl is a rich asshole and the ml a poor little meow meow

2) Time loop hanadan

3) Modern Fantasy hanadan (sort of like the beginning of Bulgasal but more petty and less angsty lol)

4) Transmigration low budget web drama romcom hanadan

5) *barfs* modern office corporate romance hanadan

6) *barfs again* gaming hanadan

7) Sports hanadan (aka if HanaKimi wasn’t genderbender or cute but toxic instead)

8) Coming of Age/ Youth to Adult Married life Hanadan

Syke! Too late! There is already an OG classic toxic Hanadan of this Genre, it’s called Itazura na Kiss (and it’s my guilty pleasure, my personal hanadan lol)

9) Ice sports hanadan....yesss...get gory with the bullying with ice skating blades muahahaha. The red card locks her on the ice rink and they oil the railings/plexiglass around it so she can't even climb out and she nearly freezes to death. They rope her to the back of a zamboni and drag her through the ice. While she is trapped on the ice rink, they rig a bucket of water to fall over her so she freezes faster.

Now for the period dramas…

10) Republican Era hanadan

They could use the boat scene ending from the finale of the anime as a convenient plotpoint to escape the republican era without dying in the republican turmoil. "Oh, they just reunited dramatically on a boat post amnesia and went abroad together and missed all the political fatal shit and lived happily ever after. Their kids returned to China and lived happily under the great CCP rule (/s)!

11) Palace hanadan

It’s hanadan meets legend of Ruyi where he is the Crown Prince but the Empress Dowager holds all the power and on some humiliation move has him take a barbarian slave as a concubine...and the red card is that it's open season on her from every noble or regular consort of his harem and his friends in the court...all is fair the only rule is she cannot be murdered, everything else is fair game. So she is beating to the brink of death, poisoned daily with agonizing pills only to be given antidotes at the last minute, drowned, flayed, etc.

12) Wuxia hanadan. Similar. Dude is the leader of the jianghu, declares her a demon bc she offended him and has all the pretentious righteous sects go after her with agonizing Gus pushed on her body, plenty of chains, kebab her in multiple ways with stakes in torture chambers to cast out the evil.

13) BL Wuxia hanadan. (this one is just here by popular demand. Mine. No, I will not elaborate on that).

14) And at last…my personal favorite….drum rolls… Xianxia hanadan (here is the plot):

She spilled peach wine on his cloud robes once by accident before the Great Heaven's Ceremony so he scribed her name carelessly on the stone of the doomed as petty revenge hoping she'd get some bad karma. But at the time the Demon Overlord was fighting the Lord of Fate and the Dijun on Kunlun and as they made their final strike the demon overlord turned into a cloud of heavy miasma that swirled away swiftly for miles and landed on the stone of the doomed. Hence, for the next 10.000 years the calamities and heavenly tribulations of every god were transferred into the unlucky FL.

In the first 300 years, the gods were unsure of what was happening, but soon word spread of a small menial demigoddess who seemed to be getting an abnormal amount of calamities and trials and yet never ascended into a higher level god. But other gods were getting past their fated tribulations dates without experiencing the event itself but still ascending afterwards. Soon this bizarre phenomenon was being gossiped throughout all the heavenly realms and the gods were rushing to get their hands on every magical item capable of moving forward their tribulation dates... After all, who knew how long this free meal would last? So it follows that our female lead spent the next 10.000 overbooked from torturing calamity to the next without a break or a reward.

Our cloud cloaked protagonist came to learn of this business about 500 years into it. It was not his intention for the karmic payback to be that harsh...but then again it was his best cloud vest that the annoying, insignificant little demigoddess had ruined...and if the consequences had been that rough, who was he to question the Great Design. He soon forgot all about it, surely none of that pesky matter would come back to bother him...

10.000 later: Our fuming fl finally had enough...after experiencing every form of dismemberment as a human, for eons, though she didn't collect an ounce of heavenly grace to ascend to higher goddess....she sure damn well accumulated enough yin to form a monumental grudge...and she would use all of that energy into one single punch for a certain cloud clothed god that would send him so high the gods would finally know what lies above the heavenly realm...not that he'd get the opportunity to tell the tale.

Reset (cdrama)

Just finished Reset and it’s my fav cdrama of like...the whole of the plague years?! I haven’t even liked any cdramas this year, barely tolerated a few, but this? this was flawless. On every level. Better than most western dramas of its genre. They have a cool concept, keep it simple, add only necessary elements and the attention to detail, character building, etc is on point. The acting is good, the leads especially, subtle but detailed, their chemistry is great and it’s one of those dramas that keeps you on edge for every minute of it. Did I mention I love the main characters? smart and good people, yet not annoyingly perfect. They mess up (the whole drama is trial and error) sometimes in impulsive ways, but never in unbelievably dumb ways. Perfect length too (ok could have been 12eps instead of 15... but still, excellent runtime management coming from a cdrama!). And most of all...it doesn’t F*Ck it all up at the ending. Do you know how many of the few dramas I almost reaaally loved (not liked, not tolerated, actually loved) while airing turned out to have such a shitshow of an ending that ruined the whole thing? Probably 90% of them... it’s a thing, cdramas have terrible or mediocre endings by definition and then only a few miraculously escape that fate.

The bastard son & the devil himself

I predict the tumblr craze for the next weeks is Netflix's the bastard son and the devil himself. It's a story between two rival clans of witches that are brutal and try to kill each other (ones are sort of cannibal too, the others succeed in the genocide of their rivals from their country) and the mc is the son of a mass murderer for the other side, raised by the rival clan and constantly abused by his half sister who is a psycho who wants to kill him. Also along the way he runs away with the daughter of that clan's leader and they both fall in love with a bi wizard who helps them escape.

Supernatural+rivalry+gore+threesome mc relationship? This the the most tumblr thing ever.

Favorite Fics 2019

hi hello it’s me your local mess. ok so this hit me on my way to work the other day and since it’s friday i feel like today is a good day to hopefully make someone’s day/night/weekend a little brighter?

i love reading fanfics. periodt. there are lots of incredible writers out there on this site and other platforms who take time to write beautiful fics about the real people and characters and their emotional support kpop ladies and gentlemen to show their love and appreciation so i want to dedicate this to my favorite fics of this year. these fanfics are of varying lengths and genres but they all have two things in common 1) they were posted this year 2) i love them.

(most of these are exo but i have some other groups sprinkled in there too)

anything kat touches turns golden and holy mother of everything that is self-love and reflection. this is a fic for all us sexy ladies with a body that doesn’t conform to what society has decided is “beautiful”. i can’t call myself plus size in any way but i do not have a flat tummy or legs for days or perky titties. quite the opposite; i’m a short lady with love handles, saggy tits and stomach rolls (yes we’re going tmi here but it’s important ok). park chanyeol is the opposite of that and he’s the best fucking man ever in this fic. he’s a muscle man but he’s a man with the biggest heart and he says “you have a cute butt” which is enough reason for you to read this. when i feel bad about myself, i think about enough and i become a little happier

another yeoldontknow masterpiece! i stand by the statement that this is the best fic i have ever read. probably read this five times already and i think about it almost daily. junmyeon is a witch from salem and that’s only one of the many reasons for you to check this out and hopefully fall in love with it as much as i have. it’ll rip your heart out and stomp on it. dub me professional empty vessels promoter already kat!!

love love love love LOVE familiar stranger! a beautiful story about reader losing all memories of the last five years due to an accident which includes her entire life with fiancé kim jongdae. dae is an angel, we all know that, but he’s somehow even more angelic as the most patient person ever in familiar stranger. this hits right in the feels (can you tell i love to read angst ahjdsf) and it’s not your usual wham bam thank you ma’am all-memories-recovered-in-five-seconds kind of situation either and i’m praying for another update of this because this is not just one of the best fics of this year but one of my favorites period.

We’re not a blog that is dedicated to reviewing music (including Kpop), but because we absolutely adore BTS and their music, we decided to do a memo-style review of BTS’s version of “Come Back Home”.

Memo

Dear Reader,

You asked me to analyze the meaning of BTS’s version of “Come Back Home” and to look at how BTS’s version of this song is different from the original by Seo Taiji & Boys.

Conclusion

“Come Back Home” from BTS’ version is about getting over one’s failures and striving for one’s dreams. BTS has done an excellent job with modernizing the original song.

Analysis

Jubiemon J: This song, when interpreted with the MV, is about people trying to go back to their “home”/roots/themselves after going through a rebellious phase that was triggered by some failure. We first see a frustrated man in the forest who embodies all the people in their 10s-30s that are struggling. I say that because when a teenager gets beat up by people, this guy also spits out blood. When this boxer’s knuckles are hurt, this guy’s knuckles also get hurt. At the end of the MV, the guy comes back home by symbolically getting the cassette tape for this song.

Here’s the MV description in Korean: “트랜디하고 감각적인 일렉트로 트랩(Electro Trap) 비트와 방탄소년단 멤버 랩몬스터(Rap Monster),제이홉(j-hope)이 직접 참여한 랩 메이킹은 원작자에 대한 존경심과 방탄소년단의 음악적 자신감까지 고스란히 드러난다. 특히 방탄소년단은 가출청소년이라는 사회적인 메시지를 담았던 원곡에자신만의 꿈을 향해 노력하는 젊은 세대의 땀과 노력, 열정이라는 메시지를 더해 단순한 리메이크 수준을 넘는 새로운 곡 해석을 선보인다.”

I put this text in Google Translate to see what it would say and here it is: “The rap-making and sensual Electro Trap beat, Rap Monster, and J-hope make rap-making a reality with respect for the original author and the musical self-confidence of bulletproof boys. In particular, the Bulletproof Boys presents a new interpretation of the song beyond the simple remake level by adding the message of a young generation’s sweat, effort and enthusiasm toward their own dreams in the original song that contains the social message of runaway youth.” I think this confirms what I said above.

Now that we understand the MV, we will look at the BTS’s version of the lyrics to see how they add to the MV.

(See figure below and credits to the translation of the lyrics goes to here) Like the guy and the youth in the MV, BTS’s lyrics admit to being “hangry” and point out that there “was no future”. We see the frustration from the start of the song with the two verses: “Why am I trying so hard now to find what? Where am I continuously drifting to?” We get the feeling that they’re capturing the annoyance that youth feel towards their hazy, challenging future.

However, BTS injects some positive notes by saying that “because we are still young, there is a decent future”. Thus, they recommend us to “wipe away our tears and come back home.” This means that we need to stop rebelling or sulking in our anger/frustrations and get back to our roots/old selves. I see the question “Why are you wasting your time?” as one to, again, remind us not to keep wasting our time through complaints or sulking. Our efforts will eventually be rewarded because our “blood and sweat tears are truthful”. That’s why right after the “blood and sweat tears” verse, we have the line “let’s imprint my name on the trophy and come back home”. We’ll come back home and show everyone that we’re successful. BTS also encourages us by noting that we are working hard for our family and that we “started from the bottom and we still going up”.

Overall, I think BTS is trying to send the message that despite our failures and frustrations, we need to keep going on and keep fighting for our dreams that we used to have. In the end, we will succeed because our efforts will be rewarded.

How does the BTS lyrics compare to the one by Seo Taiji & Boys’? I see BTS’s version of “Come Back Home” as an extension of Seo Taiji & Boys’ song, sort of like a modernized, more positive sequel. I’m looking at this analysis mostly from a lyrical point of view as I’m not an expert in music. I decided to compare BTS’s lyrics with the original. I’m not fluent in Korean, but I thought I’d compare the Korean to see where BTS decided to keep the original lyrics. (See the Table 1 below.)

Here’s an explanation of how the table works. The first column on the far left is BTS’s version in Korean. Beside that is the English translation of the lyrics (Here are the credits for this translation.) I couldn’t find a complete English version of Seo Taiji & Boys’ “Come Back Home”, so I had to take the French version I found here. Then I translated the French into English. I bolded the beginning verses because the BTS version was identical to the original one. I did highlight the second verse because in the Seo Taiji & Boys’ song, they use that as the last verse of the song. BTS did not. Whenever BTS decided to keep the original lyrics, the same colour was used for both songs’ lyrics (i.e. The verse in red font on BTS’s end is the same as the one found in Seo Taiji & Boys’ song). I decided to colour code because that’d make it easier for us to see where BTS decided to place the original lyrics. Finally, the italicized lyrics on BTS’s side means that those are different from the original song lyrics.

(Side note: You’ll notice that sometimes the translation of the Seo Taiji & Boys’ lyrics are different than the BTS’s translated lyrics even though I’ve marked the two song lyrics as the same. That’s likely do to translation style differences. Unfortunately I do not know much Korean, so I cannot comment on which translation is more accurate or more suitable. We’ll just have to make do for now)

As a general observation, I see that the two songs are very similar in meaning. The original song is also demonstrating that the youth are facing frustrations but they should keep going on as the future is still good. The differences come from the part where the original talks about parents controlling the start of lies and how the kid felt that there was no love from the parents. It seems like the original song wanted to, perhaps, highlight the pressure that parents might have given to their children to succeed and do well. Therefore, part of the frustration and feeling of being lost comes from the parents’ upbringing of their children. The original song also talks about society lying to the youth and how they feel deceived. BTS’s version doesn’t mention those lies.

Instead, BTS focuses on other parts. One is that the children want to please their parents by working hard and make sure that the family lives comfortably: “An honor to my family to my mother and to make my family get stuffed till the stomach explode[s].” There’s no hatred or resentment towards the family in BTS’s song. Another is about setting aside any feelings of frustration/purposelessness in life and focusing back on people’s initial goals/dreams.

In terms of the musical differences, we can immediately hear that BTS’s version has a faster tempo and more drums. The beginning of the original song starts at a lower, flatter key and has a funkier and more reggae vibe. I get more of a slight hip hop vibe to BTS’s version. The original’s chorus also came much earlier than BTS’s one (time wise it’d look slower because the original song has a much slower tempo, but when you look at the distribution of lines, then you’ll see what I mean). Moreover, there’s a slight dance break in the original, but we don’t see that in the BTS one. According to the MV description, Rapmonster and J-Hope made this into an electro-trap style and kept the heavy base line.

These differences are interesting and make the BTS version an excellent version of the original one. We can still identify that it’s Seo Taiji & Boys’ song, but it’s modernized and given a BTS twist. Overall, fabulous job by BTS!
