April 2024 Movies/Shows Wrap-Up
A little monthly (spoilery!) wrap-up of all the shows, movies, and shorts I’ve watched or am watching in April 2024, general thoughts, and ranking of them all.
Recommendation of the month(s): idk, had a bunch of shows that I rated pretty well but they each have big caveats lol.
Ranking
The Good Bad Mother (2023) = Utsukushii Kare S2 (2023) = 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) = The Warp Effect (2023)
I Hear Your Voice (2013) = Rewatch: ? Utsukushii Kare S1 (2021)
Jazz for Two (2024) =  Utsukushii Kare: Eternal (2023)
Some More (2018)
Watching: 23.5
I managed to watch some shows that I’d been really anticipating for quite a while and were released early last year: Utsukushii Kare S2 + movie and The Warp Effect
Average Rating: 6.5/10
MDL Updates - Added to Watchlist:
A section because I’m curious about how many shows I decide to add to my Watch List a month and also the ratio of watching them:adding them.
Title MDL (year) - (date added to Considering or finalized to Watchlist): initial reaction
Jazz for Two - 240411: New kBL that seems fine
Love is Better the Second Time Around - 240417: i'm fond of the second chance/post-breakup romance trope, hopefully I’ll like this one
Blank - 240417: Only season 1 is out for now and apparently it ends on a cliffhanger, so idk if I should be adding it to the watchlist quite yet but I want age gap GL (w dubious morality? idk what the discourse is about tbh), so I’ll add it and hope S2 is released in May as expected and turns out well
My Beautiful Man: Eternal (2023)
Unknown: I’d been keeping an eye on it since it started releasing and it got pretty high praise all throughout. I think I can get into the we’re-not-biological-brothers-but-we-grew-up-together-as-brothers dynamic
Deep Night: I’ve enjoyed First Piyangkul in shows before and am curious about the host club setting in this. This show is such an interesting case because on reddit and on Tumblr, everybody seems to love it and MDL has some mixed comments but mostly positive there too and yet the MDL rating is 7.5, I wonder why the discrepancy.
23.5: FINALLY
I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama - 240417: The Conversation podcast mentioned in their 2024 Winter Lagniappe and seems like it's a celeb-related show? they’re actors?
To Watch List At Start Of Month: 64
To Watch List At End Of Month: 64
Removed from To Watch List:
Title (Year) - (date removed): reason

The Good Bad Mother (2023)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Apr 26, 2023 - Jun 8, 2023
Watch Via: iQiyi (so, ;>)
Watch Dates: Apr 1 - 3, 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall Impression: Lee Dohyun <3 My reason for watching but the show is bigger than just him. It was so addictive and entertaining, watched the whole show in like 2 days and 2 hours. Impressed by the acting of Lee Dohyun and the mother and Mijoo's actors. The show was mostly about the mother and son relationship, with the revenge plot + the Mijoo/Kangho romance arcs in the background. I deeply wish that Kangho hadn't apparently forever loved and understood his mother and did everything for her and sang her favourite song while studying for the Bar or whatever. He went low-contact with her in Seoul even before he discovered the stuff that made him break up with Mijoo, so I think the reasons behind that and the hurt and betrayal that caused him to take such an action should have been focused on more. We got fleeting moments of him being angry or her saying she's bad but it was all explained away or he understood or whatever. Anyway, idk, I think if that relationship was more clear + the ending of the revenge arc was more solid, I would've rated it higher because I did enjoy this but some things bothered me significantly.

I Hear Your Voice (2013)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Jun 5, 2013 - Aug 1, 2013
Watch Via: Viki (paid, so ;>)
Watch Dates: Apr 3 - 11, 2024
Rating: 6.5/10 [May 12, 2024 Update: Decreased by 0.5 stars when rerating shows I've watched in 2024: 7 -> 6.5]
Overall: Noona romance + mystery + courtroom + sliiight supernatural with mind-reading, it has a bunch of things I liked. It's from over a decade ago but enjoyable nonetheless. I liked it, though Hyeseong and Sooha were quite cute but I wish 1) the episodes were a bit more condensed to be 14-16 episodes and 2) the fucking love triangle wasn't so prominent (though I get that they probably did it because Sooha was underage at first). Not life-changing and kind of overstayed its welcome for me, esp because I was barely watching 1 ep a day in the middle there.

Release Dates: Mar 26, 2024 - Mar 29, 2024
Watch Via: iQiyi (paid, so ;>)
Watch Dates: Apr 11 - 12, 2024
Rating: 6/10
Overall: Nobody in this drama asks before kissing lol not Doyoon, not Seheon, not the little kiss that Seheon's brother gave to sleeping Taejoon, and the other two, Juha and Taeyi, are experts in being creeps and having internalized homophobia that they direct outwardly to the guys they like as well (Seheon's brother fits here too lol). Yet, I enjoyed it a fair amount, the story was coherent, the acting was fine, I was endeared by Doyoon (is he the Omega X kid?), and the dynamics were enjoyable, if iffy on certain counts. Not super attached though.

Rating: 5/10
Overall: It was fine ig but I did skim through the latter half.
Ah, my exams are done (for this semester or forever? who knows), so I can finally start some new shows. Dunno whether I want yaoi with Utsukishii Kare rewatch + S2 and movie or to watch The Warp Effect. They’re both early 2023 shows that I’ve been meaning to watch but it’s been so long of me anticipating them before their release + wanting to watch while releasing + meaning to binge them after release that the expectations are a little high and I keep putting off watching them oof.
And then I got a bunch of Love for Love’s Sake tiktoks on my FYP and the edits for that show are really good, so I’m tempted a bit to rewatch that because it’s on my To Rewatch list anyway but I’ve decided no.
Rewatch: Utsukushii Kare (2021)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Nov 18, 2021 - Dec 23, 2021
Watch Via: Viki
Watch Dates: Mar 23, Apr 17 - 18, 2024
Rating: 7?/10
Overall: Ahh, idek why I wasn't Gripped by this rewatch, like I like the characters and dynamics but it wasn't keeping my attention as much, maybe because it's a rewatch? Maybe my original rating of 6.5 was correct and I shouldn't have bumped it up to 7 but who knows, maybe I'll be reintroduced to the brainworms after watching Season 2 because I found ep 6 really engaging and was into it and S2 + movie will have new, unfamiliar stories for me.

Utsukushii Kare Season 2 (2023)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Feb 8, 2023 - Mar 1, 2023
Watch Via: Viki
Watch Dates: Apr 18 - 19, 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall: This season is about Hira and Kiyoi's relationship. They didn't become boring after getting together, they didn't magically end up being a perfect happy well-adjusted couple after getting together, nor were there random issues thrown just because; the struggles and hurdles are true to their characters and dynamics. I liked the themes and dynamics it explored and their character + relationship development and progression. I also smiled a lot and lost my mind a little at certain moments. Strong writing, strong characters, strong acting, what a relief.

Rating: 6/10
Overall: Great, fun, though not as emotionally invested as Season 2 because they're in a better place in their relationship in this movie (even if it's not necessarily Perfect). It was interesting to have new people in their lives like Anna and Noguchi and how their stories influenced them. I'm happy with where we're leaving off the characters after ~6h of show/movie but lowest rating so far because it felt like we spent too much time on stuff like Anna’s story or the random kidnapping.

The Warp Effect (2023)
Country: Thailand
Release Dates: Dec 12, 2022 - Feb 27, 2023
Watch Via: Youtube
Watch Dates: Apr 20 - 26, 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall: A unique and enjoyable show, it was so fun to see all these characters in their specific situations and how they deal with them. The characters were all compelling, it's wild how I was into all their storylines. how charming each character/their story was, and how the story juggled them. It also made me see a bunch of actors in new lights, New most of all, as they acted in a role outside of their usual wheelhouse. I think the most frustrating part for me was how it seemed like although they were getting at it, they never quite acknowledged that what Alex did to Jean that night was rape. It made me quite angry actually, especially how Alex's actions didn't feel like it actually took Jean's feelings and trauma and requests into account. I was at least glad that in that timeline, Jean doesn't get back with Alex.

Country: USA
Release Dates: March 31, 1999

Watch Dates: Apr 23 , 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall: Watched it with my sister impulsively because apparently Heart Breakers is loosely inspired by Taming of the Shrew/10 Things I Hate About You and I wanted to understand all the stuff that referenced that movie. It’s a fun one, I thought Kat and whatever the guy’s name is were cute, even though I thought the resolution was much too easy.

I think I'm just in more of a mood to watch intense/thriller stuff and would binge if I was watching that was more that route because I've been watching one ep of 23.5 a day and while it's fun, I'm not dying to watch the next part or next ep. The Warp Effect was kinda like that too, I was watching 1-2 eps a day for a while. Been a while since I binged stuff quickly (The Good Bad Mother in 3 days at the start of the month). Hopefully I can make sure I keep up with the rest of the episodes as they release and don’t get distracted with other shows.

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Carlos Niño & Friends
Carlos Niño picks up on frequencies. In return, he transmits them back out into the universe. He’s built a vast body of work via radio broadcasts, intergalactic jams, and completely free sonic excursions. Openness requires listening, and Niño is an expert listener.   “Frequently, I would say I’m doing some version of supercomputing, where I’m completely free in the moment and I’m also bookmarking sections I know I want to get back to,” he told us when he was a guest on our Transmissions podcast. For his first Lagniappe Session, he turns his ear to music by his friends and collaborators, Iasos and Laraaji, plus Pharoah Sanders and Joe Bonner.

The Church of the Subgenius's Salvation Pack is the best $35 I ever spent
Tumblr media
A couple of weeks ago, I was thrilled to hear Subgenius founder, the Reverend Ivan Stang, interviewed on the Comedy on Vinyl podcast (previously) and to discover that the Church of the Subgenius was selling a $35 Salvation/Membership/Ordainment kit that was chock full of goodies.
Growing up, Subgenius tropes were a secret recognition symbol for identifying fellow mutants, and I consumed their materials voraciously -- I not only memorized the Brag of the Subgenius, I also laboriously transcribed it to a set of my bedsheets using fabric crayons so I could sleep under the holy writ.
The kit arrived last week and it did not disappoint. Naturally, it included a signed, personalized copy of the Book of the Subgenius:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there was the folder full of goodies, including a minister's card and a handsome badge:
Tumblr media
Owning this material makes you an official, paid-up priest of the Church of the Subgenius, though you need to send away to the Universal Life Church before you can start officiating weddings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(If you're too impatient to wait for the ULC, you can perform unofficial, short term marriages right away)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you're fully clergified, the kit has you covered, with a ministerial guide:
Tumblr media
A Doktorate to fill in and frame and display:
Tumblr media
And a ton of small ads and other missionary materials to take down to the photocopy shop, cut and start leaving under peoples' windshield wipers, etc (I've packed a supply in my travel bag to slip into the pages of Gideon bibles and Books of Mormon at the Marriott):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kit also includes some holy relics, like the first and second Subgenius pamphlets (the little brochures that started it all):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your official church vehicle and laptop will benefit from a selection of religious stickers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you can decorate your religious chapel with some swanky Dobbsart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as a fine selection of inspirational broadsides, including The Brag (!):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you're going door-to-door to spread the good word about "Bob," be sure to take these with you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look, we are living in some genuinely awful, fucked up, terrifying times. The fact that the Church of the Subgenius is still around and that Rev Stang is still deriving his living from the sale of this High Weirdness By Mail makes me as happy as anything in this world. Everyone should own a copy of the Book of Subgenius and all the other stuff that comes with it is such a fine and generous lagniappe that it restores my faith in humanity.

Aquarium Drunkard :: Past + Present + Future
Big things going on over at Aquarium Drunkard, the online outpost I’ve contributed to for the past several years ... here’s the deal:
“This new site is equipped with a fully-searchable archive featuring more than 13 years of music and culture writing, along with playlists, podcasts, Lagniappe Sessions, and more. This new format – the result of months of dedicated woodshedding – is part of our transition from the so-called blog age into, well, whatever this new age is.
Here’s what hasn’t changed: Aquarium Drunkard has always provided unrestricted access —no paywalls, no restrictions, free to all —and will continue to do so. But maintaining the site and compensating contributors requires support. In addition to a revamped and redesigned website, we’ve launched a Patreon page which will allow readers and listeners to directly support Aquarium Drunkard as it expands its scope while receiving access to bonus audio, exclusive podcasts, printed ephemera, and vinyl records. Your support will help keep an independent cultural resource alive and healthy in 2019.”

John Rowley: The Campaign Ad Guy Who Never Worked Campaigns
Whether with his old firm and partners, Fletcher Rowley, or his “new” firm Counter Point Messaging, John Rowley has long been at the forefront of Democratic politics.
As we discuss, he has always made his living making ads for underdogs, state legislative candidates, and under the radar races – while often enjoying the lagniappe provided by a big, targeted Congressional, Senatorial or even Presidential campaign.
He’s an advocate for his adopted hometown of Nashville, TN, a member of the American Association of Political Consultants and the President of The Southern Chapter.
John also gave The Chairman some of the best advice possible when he formed his company: “Anyone can have a good cycle, hang out a shingle, and get a bunch of clients. Most of them don’t last 5 years. Do honest work for good clients, and you’ll last.”
You can learn more about John’s actual work via his company’s website: counterpointmessaging.com

Transmissions :: A Conversation With Steve Gunn
We're joined by Steve Gunn for this episode of the Transmissions podcast—completing our round of talks with the participants of the Gunn/Lattimore/Tyler canceled tour. But there's much more to hear here than another pandemic rap. Topics of conversation include the new Livin' In Between EP, which pairs Gunn's last Lagniappe Session with a brand-new cover of Neil Young's "Motion Pictures," Steve's hardcore youth, immersion in the experimental Philadelphia scene, and his longstanding creative partnership with drummer John Trucinski.

Chavez, “Unreal Is Here” [1996]
“There is nothing to not be amazed at.”
Company Men [2017]
My Tucson-based buddy Jared Carter's started a podcast called Company Men with his pal Chuck Tommervik. It's a show about hospitality, cooking, and beers, and because Jared's involved, it's very funny and ultimately an examination of vulnerability, community, and kindness. For fans of Awesome Etiquette, Judge John Hodgman, and Doughboys.
Psychic Temple, “Tennessee Blues,” “Sail Away,” “The Christian Life” [recorded 2016; published 2017]
Generally speaking, I enjoy most if not all of Aquarium Drunkard’s Lagniappe Sessions series, which sits artists down to record cover versions of songs that mean something to them. Chris Schlarb is one of my favorite people making music these days. His forthcoming album, “Psychic Temple IV,” is a West Coast pop epic, with a lot of heart and musical warmth. Here, he shares a stripped-down session recorded in Nebraska. Accompanied by a chorus of bugs, he plays songs by Bobby Charles, the Louvin Brothers, and Randy Newman. It feels like a peek into Schlarb’s musical mind and the heights he aspires to in his own art.
Twin Peaks: The Return” Part 8 [2017]
The most baffling and exciting episode of the show yet. Terrifying, gorgeous, haunted and haunting. Lynch at his height.
Desert Oracle Radio [Friday, June 23, 2017]
I spent much of last week in Las Vegas for work, which is not one of my favorite places. One thing I do love about the place is the desert surrounding it, with those giant rock formation and deep, severe gouges carved in the earth. Gambling appeals very little to me, so each night after work and dinner, I retreated to my hotel room to read (Marvel’s Gods of Mars and, coincidentally, John Carter’s “Sex and Rockets: The Occult World of Jack Parsons”) and listen to podcasts. Best of all was Friday night when Desert Oracle editor Ken Layne launched his new late night paranormal, desert-centric “Desert Oracle Radio” on KCDZ Z107.7 FM. Layne’s booming voice and tales of floating orbs and Yucca Man kept me company in Sin City, sharing out the window onto the neon expanse below. If you have ever settled into the deep weirdness of the desert at night -- and I have on many occasion -- this show will feel eerily familiar.
Floating Points, “Mojave Desert” [2017]
Speaking of the majestic Mojave. Floydian!

Storytime: The Opossum’s Tale - A folk tale narrated by Janneke van der Molen
In this episode of Confetti Park, we hear a traditional folk tale interpreted and narrated by Janneke van der Molen of New Orleans.
Janneke is originally from the Netherlands, but has called New Orleans home for two decades. She has a deep love of the culture of South Louisiana and her adopted city of New Orleans.
Enjoy her interpretation of this strange Native American myth about why opossums have pouches.
Opossums are marsupials— do you know what a marsupial is? It is a kind of animal that carries its babies in a pouch outside its belly, after the babies are born. They continue to grow and eat until they are big enough to travel on their own. Most opossums live in the South Pacific in countries like Australia and New Guinea. Can you name some other animals that are marsupials?
The only marsupials living in the United States are different kinds of opossums.
You will have to listen to this story to learn the reason the opossum has a pouch—that is, according to Native Americans!
The Confetti Park podcast and radio program, hosted by Katy Hobgood Ray, features music and stories that families will love listening to together. We explore songs of Louisiana, the Mississippi Delta and beyond. Sparkling interviews, in-studio performances, delightful music medleys, jokes, local author storytime, and a little surprise lagniappe make for an entertaining show!
Confetti Park is supported by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and Music Rising at Tulane University.

Aquarium Drunkard: Onward
Step right up. Welcome to the all-new Aquarium Drunkard. It’s been a decade since we last fully updated the site, and in that time it feels like most everything has shifted. Forget the sea changes in the music and publishing industries. Aquarium Drunkard readers have no doubt noticed our motion toward a magazine-style format over the years, with features, interviews, mixtapes, and sessions moving to the forefront. We are still working a few kinks out, but this new site is equipped with a fully-searchable archive featuring more than 13 years of music and culture writing, along with playlists, podcasts, Lagniappe Sessions, and more.
Your support will help keep an independent cultural resource alive and healthy in 2019. More than ever before, quality independent music and culture writing is hard to find and even harder to sustain. With your support and patronage, AD will continue to provide access to art and music spanning decades, offering readers and listeners a guide to underground art, music, and culture. For heads, by heads.
Another thing that’s remained the same since we launched in 2005: Release dates, trends and hype aren’t driving forces at Aquarium Drunkard. If you read, hear or are turned on to something, it’s because we genuinely dig it. The new Aquarium Drunkard will be just like the old one in that respect. Only the good shit – onward.
An enormous thank you to the design duo of Chris Campbell and Andrew Means, and web developer Traci Larson of Visual Issues – whose patience is as great as her talent.
