Russian realtors lead potential buyers through destroyed apartments in Mariupol, where the owners were either forced to flee, or were killed by Russian bombs. Realtors recommend to invest in “razrushka” (a mockingly derisive word, derived from "razrukha,” or ruins), and joke that the previous owners had to leave in a hurry. These are incredibly disgusting vultures.
Russian realtors and speculators are buying and selling Ukrainian homes in the cities devastated by Putin. I don’t ever want to hear from tankies about how this Russian invasion was ever about “freeing” Russian speakers 🙄 or “de-nazifying” Ukraine. It’s Russian imperialism + colonialism. It’s ruthless, cold blooded land theft.
When Russia isn’t busy kidnapping Ukrainian children, they’re stealing Ukrainian land and homes.

In an underreported but hugely important development, the United States is now claiming a vast portion of the ocean floor, twice the size of California. According to the U.S. Department of State (DOS) Media Note released on December 19, the area “is approximately one million square kilometers spread across seven regions” and “holds many resources.”

Land Day: What happened in Palestine in 1976?
Every year on March 30, Palestinians hold protests and vigils and plant olive trees to reaffirm their connection to the land.
(30th of March 2024)
Tumblr media
Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza joined the Land Day protests near the eastern Gaza borders, March 30, 2022 [Abdelhakim Abu Riash/Al Jazeera]
Every year on March 30, Palestinians observe Land Day, or Yom al-Ard, recalling the events of March 30, 1976, when six unarmed Palestinians were killed and more than 100 injured by Israeli forces during protests against Israel’s confiscation of Palestinian land.
Tumblr media
How much land did Israel confiscate?
Israel ordered the confiscation of 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of land belonging to Palestinian citizens of Israel in the Galilee. These plans were part of Israeli state policy to Judaise Galilee following the creation of the state of Israel.
The confiscated land is roughly the size of 3,000 football pitches or the area from the tip of Manhattan to Central Park in New York, US.
What do Palestinians do on Land Day?
Palestinians, both inside Israel and across the occupied territory, mark this day by holding protests and vigils and planting olive trees to reaffirm their connection to the land. The protests are often met with brutal use of force by Israel.

Is Israel still seizing land?
Yes, Israel has continued to seize large swaths of Palestinian land, designating them as military zones, state land and other labels.
Most recently, on March 22, 2024, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared Israel was seizing 800 hectares (1,977 acres) in the occupied West Bank, in a move that would facilitate building more illegal settlements.
“While there are those in Israel and in the world who seek to undermine our right to Judea and Samaria and the country in general, we promote settlement through hard work and in a strategic manner all over the country,” Smotrich said, using Biblical names for the area that are commonly heard in Israel.
Settlements – illegal under international law – are Jewish-only communities built on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
On March 6, Israel’s settlement-planning authority announced it had approved the construction of some 3,500 new housing units in Maale Adumim, Kedar and Efrat within the occupied West Bank.
Tumblr media
From November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023, Israel has approved at least 24,000 illegal housing units to be built on Palestinian land.
Earlier this month, the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said settlements had expanded by a record amount and risked eliminating any possibility of a Palestinian state.

I’m reading a lot of stuff about the massacres in Ireland before and during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and, honestly, the parallels between that situation and the one in Palestine rn are pretty impossible to ignore.
In which, btw, Scotland played a role of more than supporting England - a bunch of Scottish Covenanters had engaged in plantation in Ireland, and, despite both parties being white Europeans - it’s still pretty clearly colonialism. Land theft, with the explicit intention of “civilising” the native Irish and making them change from a pastoral way of life to crop agriculture and to Protestantism.
I feel it is a necessary part of Scotland’s necessary movement towards independence that we as a country recognise our part in colonialism and genocide and that we still benefit from that resource theft today. And that comes despite the fact that we have also been victims of colonialism from England too. It’s possible to be both, and the ongoing legacy of both those facts is something we need to acknowledge and atone for.
In early modern Ireland, when there were attacks on, and atrocities towards, English and Scottish settlers, by a small number of native Irish folk, these were massively ramped up and exaggerated in the burgeoning popular press and used as excuses for mass military invasion and reprisals on the mass civilian Irish population. At least one Scottish army was sent there for “reprisals” against the civilian population by the Scottish Covenanter government.
This was in the period before Cromwell’s atrocities in Ireland, and thus is often forgotten, but they did happen. I don’t think I need to point out the parallels too minutely here.
Honestly, much as I adore the study of history, and think it is utterly necessary to understand the world we live in - few things get more horrifying and depressing than seeing such similar actions repeated again and again.
Btw, I will be *pissed off* if I see antisemitism and antisemitic dogwhistles in responses to this. The state of Israel is not synonymous with Judaism or Jewish people, and the Jewish diaspora do not deserve hatred because of the actions of Israel’s horrendous right-wing government. Both the governments of UK and the USA are considerably more responsible for them; direct your anger there rather than at people of an ethnic group who have more than enough shit thrown at them.
Both antisemitic and Islamophobic attacks have increased across the world since this, and that is absolutely horrific. No random civilians in other parts of the world are responsible for these atrocities.

“When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons.” - Golda Maeer
Zionist mental gymnastics is wild, you guys. They think they can simply forge the planet’s whole history by propaganda. Crazy.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Israel appropriated several tracts of land abutting a major Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, but a source briefed on the decision told Reuters there was currently no plan for construction there.
An announcement by the Civil Administration, part of Israel's Defence Ministry, said the tracts amounted to 2,640 dunams, or 652 acres. The Israeli source said they would now be designated part of Maale Adumim settlement, east of Jerusalem.
A spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority said the move underscored Israel's steady push to cut off Jerusalem from the Palestinian areas which surround it and undermine the possibility of creating an independent Palestinian state.
“The Israeli occupation authorities deliberately defy international legitimacy and its resolutions, which have consistently declared the illegitimacy of settlements in all Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem,” Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, said.
The West Bank is among territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war and where Palestinians, with international support, seek statehood. Most world powers deem the settlements illegal.

“To Fletcher and settler culture in general, a modern relationship to land looked like transformation: plowing the prairies, felling woodlands, damming rivers, and blowing holes right through the middle of mountains for railway tracks. Because Natives sought to live in amicable coexistence with the natural world, rather than to extract, exploit, and capitalize on its resources as individuals, Fletcher and other anthropologists believed that they would remain in barbarism, unable to advance materially, mentally, or emotionally. To evolve as a people, nature must be transformed into property.

On April 26, 2019, Nemonte helped to lead her people’s historic victory against Big Oil protecting a half million acres of primary rainforest in the Amazon earmarked for oil drilling. That historic court ruling also stated that the State cannot auction off the territories of the six other indigenous nations in the southern Ecuadorian Amazon - approximately seven million acres of mega-biodiverse rainforest were saved. A reminder that we carry the blood of warriors within us and the spirit of a People who are victorious!"

As the state of Tennessee uses eminent domain to take over land to connect a new multi-billon dollar Ford plant to the interstate, Black farmers say the government is offering them a fraction of what their land is worth.
A year ago, Ford Motor Company broke ground on a $5.6 billion electric truck plant in a rural region of Tennessee full of African American farmers, according to Tennessee Lookout. While the investment has brought economic prosperity to the area, Tennessee government officials have moved to threaten Black towns and financially bulldoze over land that has been in Black families for generations.
Now, the Tennessee Department of Transportation is attempting to use eminent domain to take over Black farmers’ land while offering them a fraction of what their land is worth.
“It’s not the first time we’ve had to fight,” Marvin Sanderlin, a longtime farmer in Haywood County with 400 acres of land told Tennessee Lookout.
The recent developments come a year after a Tennessee Comptroller told Black residents of Mason to remove their Black elected officials from office. It also comes during the fallout over Tennessee House Republicans expelling two members of the Tennessee Three after the lawmakers protested for gun safety legislation on the House floor.
Black farmers fight for fair deal in state land grab
Marvin Sanderlin is no stranger to fighting against the state to maintain ownership of his land. Local accounts highlight how his great-great grandmother, an enslaved woman, successfully sued to ensure her children inherited a portion of land from their slave-owning father.
The state has taken Sanderlin to court for 10 acres of his property as it lies in the path of the planned roadway that would connect the Ford plant to the interstate.
Sanderlin says the state is offering him only $3,750 per acre.
“That’s unheard of,” Sanderlin said. “You can’t buy no land here for $3,500 an acre. You can’t buy a swamp here for $3,500” Sanderlin said. “I told them this is the biggest ripoff there is. They want your land, but they don’t want you to participate in the wealth.”
The proposed construction would run through Black-owned land in Tipton, Haywood and Fayette Counties.
Some Black farmers and land owners have joined together and, along with the NAACP, plan to fight back.
The fight comes as Black farmers around the nation continue to criticize the Biden Administration for its failure to secure targeted investment for them in the federal farm bill, despite Black farmers suffering long-time discrimination in federal funding.
Investment on the backs of Black farmers?
The Ford plant is expected to add 6,000 direct jobs and nearly 25,000 indirect jobs to the region.
“With the single largest investment in state history, this historic project brings thousands of jobs and new opportunities for Tennessee families to thrive,” Gov. Bill Lee said last month.
Yet Black farmers who own land along the proposed roadway’s path say the economic prosperity arriving in the region shouldn’t come at the cost of their land.
Ray Jones is a retired school teacher who runs the Boys and Girls Club of Brownsville. The state is offering him just over $8,000 for an acre of his land.
Tumblr media
Jones said he supports the Ford investment, but he blames TDOT for their attempt to hustle him off his land.
“All the people are benefiting from BlueOval and that’s good. We are 100% in support of BlueOval. Make sure you quote me on that. But then you want to take my spring and give me pennies on it? It’s an unreasonable situation,” Jones said.
Rosa Whitmore, 82, owns a home that was built on land where her grandparents picked cotton. She says the state didn’t inform her of their interest in her land until late last month. They’re also offering her just $8,000 per acre.
“I worked with my own two hands up at 6 a.m. going to work in the field under the hot sun. That’s what we had to do to own this land,” Whitmore said.
