“I personally headcanon, and I think there's enough to go off in canon to support it, that Dan was closer to Alison than Rufus before she left.” Okay I love this take and it makes me sooo curious what the Humphrey family dynamic was actually like before Alison left and Dan stepped into a more parental role with Jenny!! The only Humphrey childhood anecdotes I can specifically remember are the one from 1x06 where Jenny tells Serena the story about 5 year old Dan being terrified of the Ice Capades, and the one from 1x15 that Rufus initially misremembers:

Rufus Humphrey: [to Jenny] You used to cry when I didn't walk you to school.

Jenny Humphrey: That wasn't me. That was Dan.

Dan Humphrey: I was six. It was a very emotional time for me, post T-ball.

And the subtext of the 1x15 bit stands out to me, because in the show’s present it’s obviously Dan who’s afforded all of the autonomy and treated more like an equal by Rufus while Jenny’s just a kid in need of protection, yet in these few glimpses we’re given of the past Jenny’s the one who seems to have been the more independent and self-reliant kid, while Dan comes across as having been a lot more sensitive and delicate when he was a child.

I’m curious what the early/middle childhood sibling relationship was actually like between Dan and Jenny - were they parented more equally back then and did they therefore have a more equal relationship, or was Jenny always treated as the more problematic of the two? Were Rufus and Jenny ever afforded the easier going, buddy-buddyish type of bond that Dan and Rufus have when Alison was around to be The Mom™️, and is that why Rufus kind of sucks as a disciplinarian in the present even though he’s otherwise a decent dad? Or did Rufus and Dan only develop that type of relationship as a direct consequence of Alison’s departure? And at what point did Alison become so fed up with her marriage and her life that she decided moving away and giving up primary custody of her kids was the best thing for everyone, and how long did that tension simmer beneath the surface?

I've kind of always assumed that Alison was doing the bulk of the child rearing. I don't think Rufus was an absent father, but I do think it was the traditional gender role stuff of Rufus focuses on keeping the family afloat by running the gallery while Alison stays home with the kids. So when Alison leaves, Rufus has to become a lot more involved with the day-to-day of raising children than he ever was before.

With what I know of sibling dynamics, I kinda feel like Dan being the sensitive, needy one kinda pushed Jenny into being the more self-reliant one. Like all kids are sensitive and needy but the way they express it is formed by the dynamics of their home. But because Dan was the older one, he did mature first, and you know, being an eldest sibling myself, your parents do start to rely on you at a certain point to help with your younger sibling, which clearly is what happened with Dan.

I think Jenny probably only really became the "problematic" child when she started at Constance immediately prior to season 1. I think a lot of Rufus, Dan, and Alison's reactions to Jenny that season imply that they're not used to her acting like this/that they're seeing a new side to her. Which makes sense if this is Jenny's first year in the prep school system and the Humphrey sibs went to public school K-8.

Rufus does a lot of the typical dad double standard stuff when parenting his son vs his daughter, which makes me think that even though Dan and Rufus weren't as close before Alison left, they could still be buddy-buddy in a father-son way. While with Jenny, I could see her being a daddy's girl when she was younger, but her father didn't look at her like a "buddy" in the same way he did his son, if that makes sense? But like I said, I think Dan and Rufus truly became more like peers when Alison left and Dan stepped up into a parental role.

And then as for Alison...I mean, she gave up her artistic dreams to be a mom. Rufus at least had the gallery to go to during the day, while she was at home with the kids. I think she has a line somewhere about how her entire adult life has been about Rufus, so it sounds like it's the very typical thing that happens in a marriage where the woman kinda ends up giving up her identity to focus on being a wife and a mother and then she wakes up one day and doesn't know who she is anymore. I imagine it's the kind of thing that's "slowly, then all at once" where she slowly loses herself and becomes unhappier as the years go on and then she woke up one day in the spring of 2007 and said "that's it, I'm done" and decided then and there to leave for Hudson for the summer.

And part of me really gets it and another part of me really doesn't, because how could you just give up having custody of your kids like that? Like Rufus and Alison never seem to have a custody battle, my guess is that they have nothing in writing, Rufus has no qualms about her staying in the loft with the kids while he's on tour in between seasons 1 and 2, and it's initially his idea to send Jenny to Alison at the end of season 3. So it's fully her choice to stay in Hudson and rarely visit. Which I know is just cause of how TV production works, but in universe...yeah I don't really fully know how she was able to just...go months and months without seeing her kids like that. Especially because she seems very maternal when we do see her with them. Idk. In my Alison fic, I decided that it's because while she felt strongly she had to be in Hudson, she had moved around a lot herself when she was a kid and didn't want to uproot her own kids like that.

But yeah, the show never really takes the time to explore why she went all the way up to Hudson, instead of just getting her own place in the city, or write throwaway lines about her calling or visiting beyond season 1 so it's all just up to your own interpretation.

Words written in 2021 (on AO3 haha): 20,989 - you know, this is actually more than I thought, and looking at past stuff I think it’s about as many as I did in 2020 (well, posted... a lot of my 2020 stuff was stuff I’d been working on for ages and ages)

New things I tried this year: Both of these were new fandoms for me!! Also, this past year was when I got into writing rp and have generally had a great time messing around with it (and making much more of that by volume than fic...). Another new thing I guess is your elements reassembled is 6.5k and almost all of that is one extended scene, which given that usually each “scene” I write is about 300 words surprised me (and it was very easy the way that happened too which also surprised me!) Also your girl is getting more comfortable writing smut, on track to becoming the terror of the earth as per the plan. And I’ve begun a new series (the Finrod/Sauron au) which is the second one for me since my Jan/Helena/Bohun trio of fics!

Fic I spent the most time on: two tunes are playing! I really wanted to include a bunch of stuff I knew my gift exchange partner would like and some semblance of a satisfying emotional arc in the au I was writing--and while it was about characters I’m invested in, I didn’t feel like I knew them as well as she did and they’re not my absolute fav blorbos, so the writing went more slowly.

Fic I spent the least time on: Staying--I was shook revisiting the dates and realized I posted it 3 days after Bargain (the first one in that series). And it was entirely written in those 3 days which is UNUSUAL for me who usually spends 1000 years writing fic a little at a time

Favorite thing(s) I wrote: I think the Finrod/Sauron fics and especially Staying and Distraction. I have so much fun writing Mairon it should be illegal.

Favorite thing(s) I read:

OKAY....I am absolutely going to miss some things here, because I read a LOT of fic in 2021 (thank god AO3 doesn’t have a wrapped that shows the hours you spent on their website) but I have to recommend these gems that come to mind (going to be mostly Silm here, in no particular order):

What is Wrought Between Us - the Russingon series going through the whole Silm plot that ended my life, resurrected me, and influenced my headcanons forever, and also the kidnap fam here is the best I’ve ever seen it done (the author’s Túrin/Beleg fic is also just the most well-written and beautiful masterpiece)

Casting Out The Serpent - Finrod & Beor (shippy) that is the most wonderfully written Finrod ever I can only aspire to. Their dynamic here is so excellent, too, and the fic just GETS what’s amazing (and flawed) about Finrod and how fascinated they both are in each other and their differences.

Less Than Kind - Russingon at family dinner in Himring, a light touch on the angst that just grips you horribly, & what’s absolutely wonderful is the fucking wretched Fëanorian siblings dynamic + eldest sibling Maedhros suffering

Pantië - this is like, THE Nirnaeth fic for me, even though its premise is “weird Elf/magic smut” and it never portrays the actual battle and aftermath. It just gets what’s heartbreaking about Maedhros + his hopes at the Nirnaeth + what’s at stake in his psyche and then it breaks your heart with it.

Thistle Whistling on the Wind-Blown Field - fascinating Finrod fic ft. kinslaying guilt, ongoing complications, cultural differences and Morgoth’s impact on ecology, Finrod winning over Sinda Edrahil, the Avari, and... and the author put mangroves in Valinor and won my whole heart by doing so. I’m sure I didn’t get all the references in this masterpiece but it’s gorgeous and the accompanying art (it was produced for TRSB iirc) is incredible.

Lyra - Finrod/Sauron in Valinor before everything is ruined, with the subtlest hints of mixed feelings from Sauron about the way Melkor’s plans are impacting his Elf. Also (if it’s not clear from the fic I’m writing whoops) I’m always SO here for Sauron mistaking outward signs of submission/malleability for the real thing, then finding himself off-guard when Finrod is like “Okay, that was fun, I’ll be leaving for my personal goals now <3″

Transcript of Divorce Proceedings: Mairon v. Melkor by @imakemywings - I just love the format here so much, it’s hilarious, and you totally nailed their dynamic... I’m so about this toxic ship and the ways they try to claw at each other but are still so compelled by each other. such good shit, and Melkor’s assholery (of the more overt kind) really stands out here as funny and terrible - honorary mention to your Finrod & Maedhros fics for making me cry and laugh and giving us a wonderful underexplored dynamic

Shards of Ice - Aredhel/Celegorm fix-it of sorts. Notably I adore it because Celegorm shows up in Maeglin’s life and promptly becomes a bad influence of a parent after dickishly provoking him to get a reaction. Realism, babes. I love this messy ship

Seas and Shadows - Maglor & Elladan & Elrohir - short and SO effective oneshot about Maglor sailing to Valinor ft. the ANGST and wretchedness that deserves, 10/10 heart broken

no other star - Haleth thinking about the 3 Elven rulers she’s met. This has the BEST Thingol I have ever seen in fic, I absolutely love the type of proud understanding he has with Haleth here, another proud leader, and the characterization of everyone is so beautifully done and described.

Diary of an Elven Lord by @ladygavroche - influenced the way I think of Caranthir forever, this is so perfectly on point and hilarious and the parts with Haleth are excellent. The diary style is SO good and fun

Speak, Friend, and Enter, also by ladygavroche - THE Celebrimbor/Narvi fic that the world desperately needed and did not deserve. They’re both so so well-written and characterized in this fic. I have read it so many times for comfort and it heals my heart (and wrenches it with the promise of future things going wrong for this kind, troubled, earnest Celebrimbor)

A Thread Unraveled - Maedhros POV Nirnaeth fix-it, reliving the same events style. I just... I love this so much, and the attentiveness to the details and to each Fëanorian’s respective strengths/issues and making the most of them is just so well-done. I’m here for competent Maedhros reliving the worst experience of his life and struggling to WIN it (edit: Holy fuck I just realized the author finished it!! I have more to read!)

Daeron/Maglor series by SunflowerSupreme - just really good fucked up yet...somehow mutually working dynamic where Daeron cares but is also vengeful and Maglor cares but also wants to be hurt, and the wretchedness of mutually wandering and trying to get by on the fringes of society. My heart literally aches for this Maglor and the words “The newest poetry from Lindon” make me sob uncontrollably. Also Maglor being butcher than Daeron (Daeron is a loremaster/minstrel from before Doriath needed large scale fighting, he does lore and music and that’s It; Maglor knows how to murder people 1000 different ways even if he’d rather not) is canon in my heart now

Pattern’s Guide to Mating by @blue-crow - I cannot express my enthusiasm enough for this funny, loving, & beautiful fic and how very Stormlight universe/vibes it FEELS. And the fact that you gave us the sexy Lightweaver shenanigans we deserve

Through Another’s Eyes - Kaladin/Gaz with the sympathetic Gaz I didn’t know I needed but I did

From Ashes - young Kaladin character study and angst through Tukks’ POV that makes me cry bitter tears </3

Three Meetings - Fluffy Shallan/Jasnah high school au that is just so cute and portrays their dynamic with a light touch that I love

okay for sbi what are your headcanons about their relations to each other? are the boys all biological siblings (besides tubbo of course), with the same mother or do they all have different mothers? ages and how close were they as children? i really like hearing peoples hcs lol.

so, im a huge fan of found families. i know that wilbur said that tommy, techno and wilbur are all biologically phil’s kids but he lost his rights to dictating canon when sally the salmon came into being. its my canon now <3

ive been thinking a lot about their dynamics and who would be related to who, and who’s the eldest, and this is what i’ve decided for my personal headcanons:- wilbur and techno are twins, and yes people would think this means that my headcanon for techno would be pretty boy anime techno. for a while it was, before i considered that they’re both piglin hybrids (you have no idea how excited i got when i learned that wilbur is derivitive of “wildbor” which is a medieval nickname meaning wild boar). they switch up who is the oldest depending on the situation, and to steer blame from themselves.

- being hybrids and not fullblooded piglins, i can imagine they were exiled from the nether as children. villagers were terrified of them and refused to house them. phil found these two children, scared and alone and different, and couldn’t bare to leave them out in the cold. wilbur and techno remember living on their own in a snowy tundra very differently - techno embraces the cold and later on establishes the antarctic empire, even builds his retirement cottage in the snow. but the cold did something to wilbur. he's still always so cold.

- they were very close as children and wilbur, being the dirty crime boy that he is, would often steal gold from villages for him and techno. wilbur stole the crown that techno wears now, but they refused to admit to phil where they found it. phil knows exactly what happened, and he’s been banned from several villages because of his boys. phil had hoped that wilbur would be the good one since he wasn’t as violent as techno, but oh boy was he wrong.

- tommy is adopted, and was clearly an only child before he was taken in. he has only child energy (coming from someone who is an only child). he’s the youngest, obviously. i also think it’d be really funny if tommy is the reason techno hates orphans because techno is very attached to phil and was worried that his dad would give all of his attention to tommy and not him. he used to threaten tommy whenever their dad wasn’t around, he eventually came to like the kid. he still bullies the shit out of him though.

- phil also hoped that tommy would be the good kid. he was very wrong. he keeps asking himself how he manages to adopt all these young criminals. tommy learned to steal from wilbur and more often then not is very bad at it, and gets in insane amounts of trouble. he learns how to wage wars from techno and learns how to fight. he learns how to lie from wilbur and how to close off your emotions from techno. he adopted the worst traits from his brothers, really. he looks up to techno - the legendary blade - and wanted to be more like him.

- techno has oldest child syndrome and even if he acts aloof and uncaring towards his brothers, he would die for them. even if he acts like he wants to punt tommy across the room at any given moment, he just wants the kid to be safe. he couldn’t keep wilbur safe, and now tommy is exiled, so he clings onto his dad and gave him a compass to his retirement home, knowing he only has one life left.

okay I’ll be real w/ you I lied I do have One notp and it’s dabihawks (hotwings). it’s. it’s okay, I’ll admit, but it kinda squicks me out in canon verses. like, reverse aus, genderswap aus, most aus really that slightly shift the dynamic, I’m good w/ dabihawks, but Not In Canon or any approximations of it.

I guess antis just kinda fucked it up for me?? I was kinda neutral when it first was proposed, ya know like ‘oh that’s cute!! not for me but more power to ya!!’ but then dabihawks shippers started getting in hawksdeavor shippers’ faces n giving the usual arguments against age gap ships (as if a villain/hero ship was so uwu pure n unproblematic), and then there came the ‘hawks will betray the heroes and become a villain for dabi’ theories from them and it just. that was 2018 and it Still makes me uncomfortable to think about.

I very much enjoyed hawks’ double agent thing!! but I knew an infiltration mission would end with betrayal from the beginning and that’s what I liked about it. him doing the absolute Most for the heroes even if it feels scummy to do so. I was Devastated for a moment when I saw hawks’ first meetup w/ dabi and it looked like he might be spying for them, but then we were quickly assured that it was a ploy and I was like Oh My God Thank God I Near Had A Heart Attack. but other people, the loudest group being dabihawks shippers, were dissatisfied with this and wanted canon to take a different direction and I Dunno Man, I just had very strong emotions about that and still do.

I love hero hawks in all his double agent endeavor fanboy glory and people wanting to take it a different direction in canon felt like a blatant kind of???? idk defacing of character almost, even though that’s a mega mega mega dramatic way to put it loL don’t ask me why I got such strong feelins about it I couldn’t explain it if I wanted. I’d love to go back to being chill about it I really really would.

hmm,, enji/tsukauchi. I saw a doujin for it once and it was Lovely. an absolute crackship, but I love the hero/detective dynamic of toshinori/tsukauchi, but toshinori just doesn’t give it enough Spice in most interps I see. now enji being tsun n aggressive + level headed detective tsukauchi,, that was a tasty doujin for sure.
