Seeing deeper with atmospheric muons: From archaeology to geology

Muon imaging, or "muography," may be a niche field, but with uses in probing both man-made and natural structures, its appeal is expanding rapidly. A new open-access review published in Reviews in Physics by Lorenzo Bonechi and Raffaello D'Alessandro from the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Italy, and Andrea Giammanco, Université Catholique de Louvain Centre for Cosmology, Particle Physics, and Phenomenology, Belgium, looks at the history, current status, and future prospects of muography.

Muon imaging methods hinge on the absorption or scattering by structures of atmospheric muons that are created in a chain reaction triggered when cosmic rays strike particles in the upper atmospheres. This scattering and absorption can be used to probe the interiors of these structures.

"Muon imaging creates links between otherwise disconnected areas of science, such as particle physics, geology, and archaeology," Giammanco says. "Moreover, muons come for free, they are a perfectly safe form of radiation, and they are naturally produced and ubiquitous. There is no need for expensive accelerators, or for dangerous natural radiation sources."

CONTESTO ORIGINALE: La chiesa fu ricostruita nel Rinascimento dopo la distruzione in seguito ad un incendio del 1105 dell'edificio precedente, dedicato a San Giovanni Battista in quanto ospitava le sue spoglie.

SCELTE TECNICHE E STILISTICHE: La chiesa, a tre navate con volta a crociera, presenta una facciata in pietra d'Istria, elemento particolarmente comune nelle costruzioni veneziane che definisce lo splendente colore bianco che le rappresenta, ripartita in tre sezioni su cui si aprono numerose finestre.

CONTESTO ORIGINALE: La pala inaugura una nuova fase produttiva e stilistica di Bellini, ora fortemente influenzato dall'arte di Giorgione. Quest'ultimo infatti era stato discepolo di Bellini insieme a Lorenzo Lotto e Tiziano Vecellio.

SCELTE TECNICHE E STILISTICHE: Al centro della pala si trova la madonna in trono col bambino, circondata dai santi (tra cui riconoscibili per la loro iconografia Santa Lucia con gli unguenti e Caterina d'Alessandro con la ruota, su cui un cartiglio mostra la firma dell'artista). Il bambino è rappresentato in piedi come tipico di Andrea Mantegna, pittore dal quale il giovane Bellini trasse grande ispirazione. Anche l'attenzione per l'aspetto architettonico, che riprende la struttura della chiesa, può essere ricondotta al pittore padovano che aveva sposato la sorella di Bellini, Nicolosia. Caratteristiche invece di Giorgione sono la scala cromatica della tavola e l'utilizzo di colori morbidi e pastosi, che non si servono della linea per ottenere definizione. Sullo sfondo si intravede il paesaggio che è tipico del pittore veneziano per il suo essere particolarmente rigoglioso. Sullo sfondo si apre anche una cupola con un mosaico dorato che riflette la luce e rappresenta un elemento molto comune nelle pale d'altare di Giovanni Bellini.

The sixth album by Corde Oblique was conceived as a wooden palette used for mixing colors with sounds, the sounds of the colors are evoked by using lot of different musical instruments and musical styles. Almost all existing music tonalities have been used for the songs; moreover, every title refers to a different color and the graphic design is inspired to one of the most famous italian art history encyclopedias printed in the '60s.

The cover Picture is a photo from one of the main italian photographers: Franco Fontana.

The album includes 13 unreleased songs written and produced by the mastermind Riccardo Prencipe. Over 50 minutes of refined Progressive-Ethereal-Folk music. The album features various musicians and guests:

El oficialismo confirmó fórmula en San Lorenzo

Sobre la hora según los plazos de la Junta Electoral, la agrupación San Lorenzo Siglo XXI, actualmente en la conducción del club, confirmó su esperada fórmula para las elecciones de diciembre: Horacio Arreceygor será quien la encabece, secundado por el binomio Marcelo Tinelli-Matías Lammens, en ese orden.

Se terminó así un largo período en el que las especulaciones fueron de la mano con las negociaciones. Tinelli fue desactivando así sus chances de ir como presidente, en un momento, luego se había apuntado para ese cargo al actual secretario Miguel Mastrosimone, pero finalmente se esperaba que quedara en manos del secretario general del Sindicato Argentino de Televisión. Por último, restaba ver si Tinelli y Lammens aparecían como vocales, aunque finalmente retuvieron sus altos cargos como vicepresidentes primero y segundo dentro de la lista, integrada además por Marcelo Moretti, Leonardo Lipera, Mastrosimone, Fabián Scoltore, Gilda D'Alessandro, Karina Lafevre, Norberto Mañas, Gastón Laville, Carlos Rosales, Paula Fernández, Juan Diego Fernández, Norberto Kirovsky, Sergio Costantino y Pablo Chiodini Lantarón. "Convencí a Tinelli y Lammens para que me acompañen. San Lorenzo está en una etapa de transición y era necesario que estuvieran. Marcelo tardó en decidirse, lo definió recién el fin de semana. A partir de eso trabajamos fuertemente", dijo Arreceygor en diálogo con CNN Radio.
