The show will bring together the Bay Area art scene and elements of Ukrainian culture to raise awareness and garner much-needed funds for humanitarian efforts and essential supples, after the disastrous Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. The title of the show is a reference to both human empowerment and Ukraine’s national flower (Sonyashnyk). The sunflower was introduced in the country in the mid-18th century and has since become a key component of the Ukrainian economy — its sunflower oil comprises nearly 80% of the global stock. In 1996 the sunflower also became a symbol of global celebration as it was used to mark the nuclear disarmament of Ukraine, which at the time possessed the world’s third largest nuclear arsenal. The sunflower has taken on new meaning as a symbol of solidarity, resistance, unity and hope since the Russian invasion. The show will feature 25 local artists exhibiting affordable works of various media, the proceeds from which will be donated to Hearts for Ukraine, a Bay Area-based organization that delivers critical supplies to hospitals, shelters, schools, orphanages, nursing homes, refugee support centers and the territorial defense forces of Ukraine. #ukraine #heartsforukraine #lunariennegallery #lunarienne #risesunflowers #misia.soup #misiafarris (at Luna Rienne Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf-ox0mrw6c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🌻RISE SUNFLOWERS🌻 This exhibition sign was created by myself and @nickolaybereza for our co curated show 'Rise Sunflowers' which opened on July 16th 2022. ***@Select works from the exhibition are on display in the @lunarienne back gallery until September 25th. Proceeds go to @heartsforukraine.us The sign we designed was a throwback to the older @lunarienne tradition of displaying outdoor hand painted sign advertising their art shows. A tradition that went back to 1995 when they were called 'Fabric 8', before changing to 'Luna Rienne' in 2013. Many of those signs are still on display at Luna Rienne in their street level corridor. I'm proud to say that our sign will soon be on permenant display will all the others very soon. Feels good to be a part of such a historical SF collection! The original show features 28 local artists exhibiting affordable works of various media, the proceeds from which will be donated to Hearts for Ukraine, a Bay Area-based organization that delivers critical supplies to hospitals, shelters, schools, orphanages, nursing homes, refugee support centers and the territorial defense forces of Ukraine. 🌻RISE, SUNFLOWERS🌻 Currently up at @lunarienne until August 14th! ***CLOSING RECEPTION: Tommorow, Sat. Aug 13th, 5-8pm*** -Venok/Venochik (Вінок)- Created by Ann Weiler Venok/Venochik (Вінок)- The venok, or more endearingly, venochik, is a Ukrainian headdress dating back to the pre-Christian era. The materials used to create them, as well as their form, varied by region. In central and eastern Ukraine, most were made by weaving freshly cut flowers into a crown or wreath accentuated with ribbons, leaves and, sometimes, berries. Around twelve types of flowers were used and each had a special symbolic meaning. For example, poppies, an important flower in ancient Ukrainian culture, symbolized fertility, beauty, and youth. In western Ukraine, especially among the Carpathian mountain dwelling Hutsul ethnic group, venoks are made from fabrics adorned with yarn, pompoms, and coins. Since the Euromaidan revolution, which toppled the pro-Russian government in 2014, venoks have been making a comeback as a symbol of Ukrainian ethnic pride and solidarity and are eclipsing their ancestors in size and variety of materials used to make them. Modern Venok are often elaborate headdresses featuring ears of wheat, one of Ukraine’s signature grains, as well as fresh or artificial sunflowers, a symbol of Ukrainian solidarity and resistance to genocide and occupation. This piece along with the works of 27 artists are currently available at @lunarienne Please visit @lunarienne located on 3318 22nd st. (@ Valencia) or www.lunarienne.com for purchase. 🌻RISE, SUNFLOWERS🌻 Currently up at @lunarienne until August 14th! ***CLOSING RECEPTION: Sat. Aug 13th, 5-8pm*** Pysanky - created by @nickolaybereza Who is the co curater of this exhibition/project! In Ukraine, pysanky are typically made to be given to family members and respected outsiders. To give a pysanka is to give a symbolic gift of life, which is why the egg must remain whole. Furthermore, the design, a combination of the motifs and colors on a traditional folk pysanka, has a deep, symbolic meaning. Traditionally, a pysanka is given with its symbolic meaning in mind, be it wishes of protection, fecundity, or love. Typically, pysanky were displayed prominently in a public room of the house. These hand crafted eggs along with the works of 27 artists are currently available at @lunarienne Please visit @lunarienne located on 3318 22nd st. (@ Valencia) or www.lunarienne.com for purchase. 🌻RISE, SUNFLOWERS🌻 MONTANKA DOLLS - Part Two by Ann Wieler "The Story of Natalia and Yulia" Natalia(Red) Yulia (Blue) ***READ MORE BELOW*** Currently up at @lunarienne until August 14th! ***CLOSING RECEPTION: Sat. Aug 13th, 5-8pm*** Yulia (Юля) with baby Dima (Дима)- This is a patriotic doll. Her clothing, while not totally traditional, features the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag, which is inspired by the landscape of the Ukrainian countryside, with its vast wheat fields and deep blue skies. Both mother and baby are supporting their troops by holding Ukrainian flags. Baby Dima’s hairstyle is called a chub (чуб)/oseledets (оселедець) and was favored by Ukrainian frontier warriors, Cossacks. The long lock of hair was worn on an otherwise completely shaved head because the warriors believed that while their lives of sin would likely warrant eternity in hell, their chubs would enable God to pull them back up to heaven if he changed his mind. Natalia (Наталия) the Banduristka (Бандуристка)- Natalia is a traveling player of the traditional Ukrainian plucked string instrument, the bandura. Traditionally, bandura players, called bandurists and banduristkas traveled far and wide, earning a living entertaining with songs and epic poems. Like musicians and artists the world over, they shaped culture and history. Natalia is playing her bandura as two birds sit on her shoulders accompanying her song. Her costume represents a modern take on traditional Ukrainian clothing although her flower crown, called a venok (вінок) has been worn by unmarried women since pagan times. Natalia is named in honor of our mother/mother-in-law who was the director of a music school in Ukraine. These dolls along with the works of 27 artists are currently available at @lunarienne Please visit @lunarienne located on 3318 22nd st. (@ Valencia) or www.lunarienne.com for purchase. 🌻RISE, SUNFLOWERS🌻 MONTANKA DOLLS by Ann Wieler Natalia (Red) Yulia (Blue) ***READ MORE ON MONTANKA DOLLS BELOW... Currently up at @lunarienne until August 14th! ***CLOSING RECEPTION: Sat. Aug 13th, 5-8pm*** Thank You Ann Wieller for contributing these hand made traditional Ukrainian dolls to our project! Motanka Motanka dolls (Ukrainian мотанка, from мотати - to tangle/spool) are a type of traditional amulet dolls made in Ukraine. They were a part of folk culture and beliefs in magic, made of wound fabric without the use of a needle or other sharp objects, so as not to "not poke/hurt fate" and traditionally had no facial features although the faces were sometimes decorated with a cross instead. The cross patterns woven on the face are thought to have represented the sun during pagan times and, later, were connected to Christianity. The absence of facial features may have been an attempt to ward off bad spirits or curses (i.e. the evil eye).  Motanka dolls were made for specific purposes or to fulfill wishes/tasks of various sorts such as guarding the family or a prosperous marriage. Nowadays motanka dolls are regaining popularity as interest grows in learning about Slavic folk culture; they are often featured as cultural artifacts during educational and ethnographic workshops to illustrate a rich aspect of our heritage.  These motankas are more modern although they retain elements of traditional craftsmanship, like the winding of fabric and the cross designs on the faces. Their clothing is made from fabrics, laces, and ribbons that are sewn in places, and the dolls themselves have some modern rebel flair that also celebrates the resilience, innovation, and determination of Ukraine and her people.  These dolls along with the works of 27 artists are currently available at @lunarienne Please visit @lunarienne located on 3318 22nd st. As I reached for my phone, I read a text message from my sister, "Well here we are - awaken by the explosions". Unbelieving my eyes, I opened up the news feed. Russia had launched a full-scale war on my country. I found it hard to believe, struggling to stifle a panic attack. At that moment, the beautiful streets of Florence became a golden prison to me. I needed to do sonething to feel somehow involved in what was now happening to what was dearest to me. But all I could do while waiting for the plane was wander arpund the city marveling at at everyone's peace and joy. Their world was not torn to pieces as mine.I put number one as the date on my wrist watch. The countdown had started.
