Thursday, May 26: Madder Mortem, “Blood on the Sand”
Nobody could accuse Madder Mortem of standing still and relying on formula, as their lengthy discography covered a lot of ground and touched upon multiple strands of metal, from goth to groove to trad to even nü metal. And some 20 years into their career, “Blood on the Sand” opened Red in Tooth and Claw with that same restless spirit, careening wildly while Agnete M. Kirkevaag carried the tune with her charismatic and dynamic vocals. The track was fully in its zone, not really sounding like anything else while staying true to the band’s spirit. What continued to resonate about Madder Mortem was that they didn’t really seem to belong to a specific time or place, despite very much being part of the Norwegian metal scene and bearing many of its touchstones. Instead, they went about their business and did their own thing, to frequently memorable if sometimes baffling results, and “Blood on the Sand” carried on that tradition in fine form.

On Guard - Madder Mortem
Old habits dig their roots in
Dark slivers of past everywhere
I remember I've been hiding something
But it seems I forgot how to share
So I remain on guard
which is, yes, about Durge-standard memory loss, but I like it for the imagery of roots and slivers, because I picture Rune as really suffering from very fragmented memories, and physical habits he that he doesn't remember where they came from.
Plus the fact that he's such a closed off person specifically because he doesn't remember anything: when I played him, I was playing him as rude mostly because he didn't know shit about himself and so was snapping out of fear, keeping his guard up. he knows there's something wrong with him, but not what - he doesn't know what his deep dark secret is but he knows it's lurking

#keios#vinyl tag#album art#madder mortem#sooo i've been in love with this band since i first discovered them back in 2002 when deadlands came out#they're so good and so underrated#literally no one does it like them#they were the support band for opeth during the deliverance tour#so maybe opeth fans are at least aware of them#but i don't think they've ever gotten the appreciation they deserve in the progressive metal community#it's been six years since their last album marrow#and i for one think they're back better than ever#the band's lead siblings recently lost their father jakob#and the album is dedicated to him#they've also used a painting of his as the album art#also the vinyl sounds amazing!#the only older album they've released on vinyl is mercury#imo they should do the same for the rest. but deadlands especially#i would literally pay anything for deadlands on vinyl....

Five years after the release of “Marrow”, MADDER MORTEM are back with their brand new album “Old Eyes, New Heart” which will be released on January 26 via Dark Essence Records.
