A few weeks ago I got a spam mail about a contest where I could win a holiday in Malta. I tried for a concerningly long time to try to find hints that it might be legit after all - it was a good fake, it even had the logo and address of the Maltese tourism agency on it, but in the end it just wasn't entirely convincing and probably a phishing site.

But yeah. I'd really like to go back there... I thought I could see the most important sights in 2 weeks but I ended up feeling like I had only scratched the surface. Half of both bigger islands and all of the smaller island I didn't visit at all. If you have time and money to travel, I'd really recommend it, especially in winter when the temperature is bearable and the place isn't full of drunk tourists. Especially if you like history or architecture. Or giant cacti. It's a really lovely place. At least to visit. The Maltese constantly complain about everything about their country and I have no way of knowing if they're right to do so.

‘Cuddle with me?’

‘With you? Always my love.’ Ona murmurs, wrapping her arms loosely around your waist immediately.

You lean back into the brunette’s embrace, the both of you taking a private moment to yourselves at the front of the boat.

Such moments had been few and far between recently, given the well for a lack of better way to put it, nosy nature of your teammates.

Spending a winter camp with them in Malta had brought you a great deal closer to your teammates but you also missed spending time alone with your girl.

It took Ona leaving Levante for you to truly realise how much she means to you.

It seemed that the season Ona spent apart from you led her to a similar realisation.

People say absence makes the heart grow fonder and in yours and Ona’s case, it’s true.

Not long after your move to Manchester United, the fullback had asked you to be her girlfriend.

And you haven’t looked back since.

The two years you have spent playing alongside Ona in England have been good to you.

It’s been good to her too because Barcelona had expressed interest in her return.

You keep staring out at the Maltese sunset, the laughter and noise of your teammates talking behind you, fading into the background.

Your girlfriend strokes the back of your head lightly and presses an affectionate kiss onto the shell of your ear before softly asking, ‘What are you thinking about?’

‘You.’ You answer truthfully.

Ona’s eyes shine a little. You were thinking about her?

‘What about me?’ She can’t help but ask.

There’s a tiny smile on your face as you lean back further into Ona’s arms.

Her skin is warm, the tan and new freckles that have appeared from the past week spent under the sun making you adore her all the more.

‘How beautiful you are. How much I love you and-’

You hesitate before finishing, ‘How much I’m going to miss you when you go.’

‘Oh.’ Ona sighs guiltily.

She hadn’t known how much that had been bothering you. With half the season left to go, her focus had been entirely on starting the new year well instead of on where she could be going when the season did end.

‘Nothing’s decided yet amor and I promise that you’ll be the first one I tell when I do decide okay?’

‘Okay.’ You murmur and Ona kisses your cheek, using her free hand to tilt your head so that she can meet your eyes.

‘I also promise that if I do leave, I will only be leaving Manchester. I will not be leaving you. I will never leave you mi amor.’

Blinking back tears at the overwhelming sincerity of your girlfriend’s words, you nod wordlessly.

Ona seems to understand and kisses you gently, providing you with comfort.

In response, you bury your face into her shoulder, fingers loosely clutching onto the soft material of her hoodie.

‘I love you.’ She whispers.

‘I love you too.’ You whisper back.

Among the many species of weeds along the Mediterranean basin, Oxalis pes-caprae, better known also by the term yellow sorrel, it is one of the most widespread, above all along central-southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia. It is a weedy botanical species, of South African and Namibian origin (therefore of southern Africa), belonging to the Asteraceae family.In fact we need to remember that, although today it is widespread throughout the Mediterranean, is not a plant native to our regions.

According to some historical sources, its introduction to the Mediterranean took place at the beginning of 1800, on the island of Malta, as an ornamental plant, by a botanical admirer of Anglo-Saxon origins, coming from the South African colonies of the Cape, where today's City of Cape Town is located. This first plant reached Father Giacinto, a local botanist friar, who in fact mentions it in one of his indexes of botanical collections. After being planted in several places on the island of Malta, the plant spread massively within a few years, starting from the Maltese territory and Gozo.

Shortly thereafter, Oxalis pes-caprae began to invade Sicily and Sardinia as well, as an invasive weed species, to the detriment of the local species, which were quickly supplanted by this plant, originally from southern Africa. The characteristics of the species. This plant is very particular, as it has a bulb which is the only part of the plant that remains alive all year round. Its reproduction occurs vegetatively. Each root originates from a central bulb. From this arise numerous small bulbs which, when detached, generate a new plant.

Lacking cross-pollination, all the yellow sorrels around Italy are clones of those few plants that arrived at Padre Giacinto more than two centuries ago.

The bulbils remain dormant throughout the summer and germinate in late autumn, after the arrival of the rains. Flowering takes place in winter, between the end of December and February, continuing until spring when the aerial part disappears, closing the reproductive cycle. Medicinal properties and soil protection.

In the past it was believed that the plant had important medicinal virtues, through the use of its roots and leaves. Even today, in herbal medicine, the leaves and roots of this plant are used in decoctions for their refreshing, diuretic, astringent and anti-scurvy power. “Science is mental, isn’t it?” you overhear Ella saying to Alessia in the row behind you, as the rest of the Manchester United team boards the plane ready to fly to Malta for a week-long training camp before the second half of the season resumes. “A tiny metal box that flies thousands of metres in the air. We could literally drop from the sky at any moment, except we don’t.“

It’s the kind of profound yet idiotic statement you’ve come to expect from Ella but instead of laughing at her crazy thought processes like you usually would, her words have all the hairs on your body standing to attention. You hate flying, not that any of your teammates know this. As an international footballer it’s unfortunately part of the job, but over years of travel you’ve developed coping mechanisms and even gone to therapy to try to reduce the terror you feel every time you set foot on a plane.

All that hard work is pointless as soon as you hear Ella’s reminder of how easy it would be for the plane to go down with you onboard.

“Is this seat free?” Ona asks, standing in the aisle and gesturing to the space next to you.

Still gripped with fear, you can’t form words, but nod. Ona stows her backpack in the overhead compartment and drops into the seat beside yours.

“Can you imagine being a pilot though?” Ella continues talking behind you. “Like if I make a mistake at my job, we might lose some points and I get a bollocking off Marc. But if a pilot messes up … boom! People die.”

You grip the armrests on either side of you and try to focus on the breathing techniques your therapist taught you to calm your nerves before a flight. But as hard as you try, you can’t block out Ella’s voice as she continues talking about plane crashes.

“Are you okay?” Ona asks. “You’re a bit pale.”

You want to make a joke about how not everybody gets to spend their winter break topping up their tan in the Spanish sun, but the only word you manage to choke out is, “Fine.”

Ona can tell you’re anything but fine. She frowns at you in concern and then, as Ella moves on to recount some YouTube video she saw about a plane that went missing and was found on the ocean floor months later, Ona pieces it all together and says, “Oh.”

Without you needing to say anything else, Ona extends her neck and peers over the seats into the row behind.

“Tooney,” she warns Ella.

“What?”

“Can you save this conversation for after the plane lands?”

“You scared of flying, Ona?” Ella teases her.

Ona glances across at you, then spares you the embarrassment by saying, “Well if I wasn’t before then I might be now you said all that.”

“You know,” Alessia pipes up, “I read something on Twitter the other day that says you’re actually more likely to die in a road accident on the way to the airport than in a plane crash.”

As the last few people board the plane and find their seats, Ona settles into her own seat again and reaches for your hand.

“I’ve got you,” she reassures you, her voice low enough that nobody else can hear. “Whatever you need.”

“Thanks, Ona.”

“No, seriously,” she insists. “You need me to distract you through the take off? Or want to sleep on my shoulder during the flight? I’m here for that, okay? And just squeeze my hand if you’re scared. Like this.”

Ona demonstrates, squeezing your fingers as she gives you a smile that’s full of warmth.

“I’ve got you,” she says again.

You’re still scared of flying, still scared that your life is in the hands of the pilot sitting in the cockpit at the front of the plane, but with Ona sitting beside you and her hand in yours, the fear is lessened, hidden under a blanket of reassurance that her hand holding yours provides.
