Tumblr Dashboard Simulator, the British of the American Revolutionary War
🌊my-peggys-husband
We have a man confin'd aboard the Preston, a common scrub by the name of Benjamin Hichborn, who was caught carrying the most extraordinary letter pertaining the private dealings of one Mr G. Washington, written to him by a Mr B. Harrison:
Tumblr media
As you can see from an etching of the original as printed above, that man is a rascal and a scoundrel. For how is a man to be trusted to keep true to his country, if he cannot remain true to his wife? Mrs Admiral says that she should not suffer such a husband, and that any man of any worth & quality should reject him.
This is your time to join the True Protectors of Moralty and Order around these parts!

This may differ slightly from my usual missives about playing the violin and new musicians to be aware of (Haydn and Boccerini are to be highly recommended, especially the latter is as yet little known in these parts, though very innovative in his compositions), but I feel I can no longer withhold what troubles me, and have no other place to speak of it:
There is a lady whom I have fixed my affection upon, and cannot forget her; yet she is wed to a scoundrel, and has a son by him. We see each other daily, and until now I have held my tongue, but my soul can no longer endure this torment.
We share an acquaintance that is too long to be recounted here, and does not signify. What is of some import is that in recent times, I have observed her grown less reticent in her intercourse with me, joking, smiling, and conversing freely. Might it be true that she may keep me in the same regard as I do her?
I knew that I held her in high affection her when first I saw her, when she was stood in my parlour at Boston, fall'n on hard times and heavy with child. That very moment, she could have ask'd me to be the Joseph to her Mary, and I would gladly have accepted her, and her child, who is dear to me also, into my home.
For I am a shy b-tch, as I have before confessed to, I ask of you:

It is with sadness that I have to announce that for the time being, I will have to take a step back from social media.
Do not fret, this blog will not be taken down, and you shall not be deprived of access to my plays on my website; yet a personal emergency, and a busy work schedule demand of me to retire from my online pursuits.

I keep thinking of a song I heard play the other day, but cannot recall it entire, I know but the first few lines of it.
If one of you could do me the immense kindness to tell me its title, and perhaps some print-shop where it might be got, I would be much obliged.
It goes:
He never speaks his passions He never speaks his views Whereas other men speak volumes The man I love is mute In truth, I can't recall Being wooed with words at all Even now He plays the violin He tucks it right under his chin And he bows, oh he bows For he knows, yes he knows

With these new devices call'd mobile phones, it has grown much easier to do a great many things; is any here who can recommend any app or device that should allow for me to know where my dog is when I cannot see him? It appears that he has got off again, and it would be very bad indeed were it to happen in battle, and he to fall into the enemy's hands. Suggestions are welcome!

actually insane to me the leaps and bounds amrev media will go to make redcoats look like genuine real life villains. insane to me that we got not one but TWO queer interpretations of SIR HENRY FUCKING CLINTON, of ALL obscure blorbos, before we've ever gotten even the tiniest bit of recognition of the genuinely interesting and JUST FUCKING SWEET relationship he had with Mary Baddeley
y'all will resort to make him GAY before you want to show the real life relationship that reveals how kind he was and how much love he had to fucking give qwq
anyway since i know im preaching to the choir and ive seen a lot of posts abt it anyway im not gonna go in depth on why the whole Queer Redcoats thing is Bad, Actually, i just think it's funny that because of how much we really don't want to make the British CIC look good we just made him gay. that shits hysterical. like i cannot emphasize how funny it is that it's Clinton of all men. a relatively obscure historical figure even with his role in the revolutionary war. a man i just happen to be fascinated by. and this same man getting to slap his pet twink's ass (in Dark Eagle) is more than i can say for a lot of my other blorbos

By sheer coincidence, three of the most essential versions of A Christmas Carol have connections to Mary Poppins.
Reginald Owen, the Scrooge of the 1938 version, played Admiral Boom in Mary Poppins, while the 1951 Alastair Sim version features Hermione Baddeley, who played the Banks's housekeeper Ellen, as Mrs. Cratchit, and Mervyn Johns, father of Glynis Johns (Mrs. Banks), as her husband Bob.
And then David Warner, who played Bob Cratchit in the 1984 Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, replaced the long-deceased Owen as Admiral Boom in Mary Poppins Returns.

Since rewatching Turn I just remembered how glorious Henry Clinton is in it. I’m convinced the screenwriters just read his letters to William Phillips and were like “ah yes that is a gay man” and honestly, valid.

Propaganda
Hermione Baddeley (Brighton Rock, Passport to Pimlico, Mary Poppins)— An absolute mainstay of British films from this period. She’s an icon who never takes shit from anyone in any of her movies, dresses for the occasion, and has the best line delivery! Also she started out in silent movies, and was a close friend of Noel Coward. In a desperate attempt to appeal to a large tumblr fandom, I will also point out that her first husband and one of her children were both called David Tennant. You like that name, don’t you tumblr??
Glynis Johns (Mary Poppins, The Court Jester)—LISTEN, I'd let that woman's voice with all its gravely hoarseness (positive) wash over me all goddamn day, but if that's not enough she managed to play the straight woman to Danny Kaye's jester, all with her cleavage so plunging it might as well have been catapulted into the ocean right after Basil Rathbone
This is round 1 of the bracket. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Glynis Johns propaganda:
Tumblr media
She walks the line between sexy and cute. Her best role for me is in "The Court Jester as Maid Jean. She's fantastic as the soft but tough captain of the outlaw band and she looks stunning in every gown she wears throughout the film. And of course we can't forget her iconic turn as the suffragette mother, Mrs. Banks, in Mary Poppins! Also shoutout to her distinctive and beautiful voice, kind of smoky and husky. Extremely hot and set her apart from many of her peers."
Tumblr media
"Listen, listen. I was raised on Mary Poppins and "Votes for women! (step in time)" single-handedly taught me how to be a feminist. Also The Court Jester is one of my favourite movies of all time and she is UNBELIEVABLY gorgeous, charismatic, funny, and clever in it. She knocks several men out. Absolute icon."
"Like Bette Davis she has eyes to die for. Unlike Bette Davis you felt comforted by them, even when she was batting her eyelashes at you. Would glady go to Downing Street with her and throw things at the Prime minister"
"She had this wonderful wit and charm to her no matter the role and the most distinctive, striking voice!"
Tumblr media
"She was amazing in Mary Poppins (the Suffragette song is severely underrated) and apparently she was Welsh? National pride! And she advocated for arts funding in Wales, which is very cool. Also, she died recently (RIP) making her one of the last survivors of the Golden Age of Hollywood, according to Wikipedia. Also also, she just has a cheeky energy I like? And her eyes are beautiful!"
"I mean, incredibly beautiful and talented, can do drama can do comedy. And she was a mermaid."
Tumblr media
"I love Glynis Johns. Most of the reason is The Court Jester where she's a sensible and capable foil to whatever what going on with Danny Kaye at the time. She was also the first star I based an OC on. An OC that I still have to this day! Anyway here have some YouTube links love u bye"

The @hotjaneaustenmenpoll tournament has inspired me to finally write this post, this more than a post, this bit of FUNDAMENTAL Austen adaptation research.
It is well known that there was a Mansfield Park adaptation in 2007, for which the reception went from "eh?" to "huh?", but what most people around here probably don't know, is that this was the cover for the DVD release in Spain:
Tumblr media
And you'll naturally ask, who is that handsome blonde man on the right? He definitely isn't Michelle Ryan, we know what she looks like.
He's Baddeley. The butler. The butler at Mansfield Park. Emma's 2020 class commentary this, and Emma 1996 (ITV) social commentary that, but has any of them put a servant on the cover? Thought so. And people have the gall of calling this a bad, unfaithful adaptation :P
So, in honor of Baddeley and his being the only servant I can think of in the Austen canon of whom we have some pov writing, and what is better, that pov is inner snarky thoughts about Mrs Norris, let's have every time Baddeley shows up in MP 2007, witnesses iconic events, and wins his spot on the DVD cover.
Here we have Baddeley serving some refreshments during Henry and Mary's first visit to Mansfield:
Tumblr media
Here we have him also serving some wine to sir Thomas during the very awkward dinner that followed his return from Antigua:
Tumblr media
Here we have Baddeley making sure Fanny's special picnic goes perfect:
Tumblr media
That includes making sure nobody is dying of thirst (dancing is a very taxing activity!):
Tumblr media
Here we have him at the zenith moment of his telling Mrs Norris that she's not wanted:
Tumblr media
Evil never rests, and neither does Baddeley's commitment to keeping people hydrated, in this case, during a mouth-drying reading of Shakespeare by Henry:
Tumblr media
Sometimes Baddeley's work involves improvising, and taking on jobs others would have considered beneath their title, such as carrying Edmund's bags:
Tumblr media
Or helping sir Thomas get out of his traveling coat:
Tumblr media
But this also has its rewards, as door watch duty allows him to witness the moment sir Thomas yeets Mrs Norris out of Mansfield:
Tumblr media
Alas, in a clear commentary on the class issues of the regency era, despite his relevance to the plot and constant presence at life turning moments of the family, he was not invited and nowhere to be seen at Edmund and Fanny's wedding, while absolute strangers got to witness the momentous occasion instead.
Baddeley, friend, don't be sad. You were there, in our hearts.

Merry Christmas (from New York, 1776)!
Tumblr media
I know that somewhere, sometime, I reblogged the original post but cannot find it for the life of me, so here is my little edit that feels seasonally appropriate.
...Because when your name is Mary, it's not always the carpenter who takes your (pregnant) self on a strenuous journey away from home (I'm looking at you, Thomas Baddeley) who is suited to raise your firstborn son.
Sometimes, it's the starkly middle aged British army general with a receding hairline.

Some Thoughts on 'Chimes of Midnight'
I don't remember the exact timeline line of events, but after watching the 'Amazing Digital Circus' pilot I finally got around to listening to an audiobook version of 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' read by the author of the short story. and I think a couple of days later I was relistening to the Charley arc and had gotten to Chimes of Midnight and thought something kind of interesting.
Edward Grove is just a Doctor Who version of AM. Yes, Doctor Who can literally just have AM on an alien planet, but having a version of AM being the cause of time travel is really cool. (Also remember iirc the author of the short story was able to sue for Terminator stealing one of his stories.)
The big correlation I'm seeing is a physical space has gained consciousness and is now torturing the residents of it. For Edward Grove, it's preying on the lower class of 1919 and their lack of self-worth, so to them dying over and over again is deserved. For AM it is taking revenge on the species that created it and tormenting them by changing them physically and mentally.
Another point is that these living places have made the residences functionally immortal. For Edward Grove this is by sticking the people in a time loop, the residents may die but when the time loop starts again they are brought back to life. For AM this is by forcing them to live so they'll live forever so he can torture them forever, this can be from forcing them to not die of hunger even though they should be or bringing them back from falling down a fault in the ground.
This continues with how the stories both end, though they're reversed. 'Chimes of Midnight' ends with The Doctor and Charley stopping what's feeding Edward Grove and that's by giving self-worth to Edith so Edward Grove can no longer feed on death. 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' ends with 4 of the humans dying making AM lose. He can no longer torture 4 people as he can't bring them back to life. Yes, it leaves the remaining human to be tortured even more and this disfigurement gives the name of the short story.
A smaller one is just the number of people who are initially trapped, both have 5 people trapped. 'Chimes of Midnight' has Edith, Frederick, Mary, Mr. Shaunessy, and Mrs. Baddeley. 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' has Ted, Nimdock, Ellen, Ted, Gorrister, and Benny.
Thank you for listening, I just wanted to talk to someone about comparisons I saw in the two stories. Let me know what you think
