Ime, hát megleltem hazámat,
a földet, ahol nevemet
hibátlanul irják fölébem,
ha eltemet, ki eltemet.
— József Attila, „(Ime, hát megleltem hazámat...)”, részlet, 1937. nov. 24.
S ha kell, még nevetni is megtanulok
kedvetekért, mászni cseresznyefára,
vízen járni vagy holdfény-kötelen
billegdélni bele az éjszakákba.
Hátha így végre megszerettek, s nevemért
még hazát is vehettek magatoknak,
szegény szegények, akiket csupán
a hajnalok rigói vigasztalnak.
— Csoóri Sándor, „Ami maradt”, részlet, Húsvét küldönce
A messzeségben, ott, hol domborúl a Csendes Óceán
A föld a semmiség felé. Vigyél el még oda.
Még hazát is találok ott a vég előtt, én hontalan. Jöttöm hirére tán
Akiről álmodék, elémbe fut. Már várnak ott... s ez jól esik.
Így lesz-e, mondd? - Felelj rá, hogyha tudsz.
— Füst Milán, „Este van”, részlet

A dicséret fokozatai -- Darvasi Lászlóról
A dicséret fokozatai — Darvasi Lászlóról
(A szöveg 2005 decemberében hangzott el a Füst Milán Alapítvány prózaírói díjának átadásán, a kép majdnem tíz évvel korábban készült, 1996 tavaszán, Berlinben, a Wandsee-nél, Kleist és kedvese sírjánál. Nem emlékszem, hogy a laudációt közöltem volna valaha is, történeti érdekességként viszont, hiszen mégiscsak tizenhét év telt el, érdeklődésre tarthat számot. Ilyenek voltunk.)

When I Shall Have to Render My Bones
Milán Füst
This crazy carriage drives at crazy speed.
And as if it ran toward a doubtless goal, a shelter sure and safe,
It will arrive at the zones of old age, of ailments and of lack of teeth
Until, among the natives of non-existence, it comes to a stop.
No matter, I weep not. — Oh crazy coursers, do run on
And rush me along so the forest of humans howls
And I neither see nor hear. Let my heart be savage like that of the hunter
That goes out to kill, has no fear, — nor heeds the Creator on high,
Nor watches His face to see if it’s gloomy and whether He frowns
when that bullet is fired…
He would say: That’s the way of the world! — I must make the sacrifice,
I must die,
I who was as hungry as a snake,
As lazy as a crocodile,
A destroyer by penchant like a yellow apocalyptic horseman,
I who had the savage spots of greed a-stirring in my eyes!
Why are you weeping at your own ill fate?
Behold the bird of the sky, who helps it when it screams?
Or take the giant oak when in the storm it groans and cracks,
Behold the calf that still would suck yet is brought to slaughterhouse
And all the rest that march toward their undesired goal…
And write at last your hymn about the wailing vultures on this earth
and mention too
That eyes grown dim were deemed here to be comelier than lustrous ones.
(István Tótfalusi, translator)
