I grew up in the quiet suburbs of Minnesota where everyone spent their weekends and summers at their cottage partaking in any number of outdoor sports. It was simply an expectation that family vacations involved nature to some extent, which is hardly surprising considering that Minnesota is renowned for its natural beauty. This instilled in me a sense of comfort with nature from a young age. Even during tornado season when every so often the sound of sirens would send us into our basements, we separated this experience from our scenic vacations

This summer my relationship to nature swiftly evolved into something far more complex. I spent my summer at a wildlife sanctuary for a wildlife rehabilitation internship living in a small trailer that sat at an unforgiving temperature of 35 degrees. Each day I witnessed what the animals perceived to be the fight for their life as I tried to help them and they, in turn, tried to inflict as much damage as possible. Their brutality and desperation invoked an image of a scene in the wilderness where death by combat was simply a fact of life. Nature was swiftly established in my mind as an unforgiving, inescapable arena whose participants were trapped in the fight for their life. However, it was a lightning strike that truly established my newfound relationship with the great outdoors. I was with my coworkers in the resource center, a cabin with glassless windows, when a thunderstorm hit. My coworker was filming the storm when lightning struck so close that we all felt the electricity in the air. Later, while rewatching the video, we saw the image of lightning branching across the sky, causing a small fire in the treeline. If we had been outside, we would’ve risked injury or death by an event so swift that our human senses would have been unable to warn us. My account will never be able to articulate the primal fear we all felt in that moment, nor can I even quite recall the feeling now, just the lingering sense of newfound vulnerability. This helpless feeling evolved to form a newfound respect and sense of humility in the face of an uncontrollable force.

From a young age, my father offered me a unique perspective on the natural world and a sense of place. My father grew up in a small town in Maine and his family spent summers on a rustic campsite. Through his stories I learned every detail of a place I had never laid eyes on and yet it was a place my mind wandered to often. I heard about surprise encounters with wildlife, how his tent felt like home despite the cold nights, and how packing up at the end of the summer often filled him with a lingering nostalgia, knowing that his time there was as measured as his childhood. His narrative was so raw and powerful that I did not need to step foot outside of my own home to find a sense of place within this tiny campsite in rural Maine. A true sense of place transcends physical and chronological boundaries and my father expertly worked around this to allow his children to experience such an important piece of his past.

The most popular national parks in the U.S. such as Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon attracted record crowds last summer. For some, it might be worth fighting traffic or walking packed trails to see the towering granite monoliths in Yosemite or fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains. But, there are 63 national parks across the country, many with far fewer visitors—and just as many hikes with epic views, wildlife-spotting opportunities, and kid-friendly excursions.

Here are 10 of the country’s least trafficked parks, plus what to see and do in them.

Best Water Excursions: Channel Islands National Park, California

Hikers and kayakers find ample ways to explore this constellation of five wild islands off the coast of Santa Barbara. Beginner-friendly paddling trips, like the one from Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island, let visitors take in abundant sea caves, kelp forests, and wildlife such as gray whales, dolphins, and sea lions. Strong currents and shifting weather make going with a guide a smart move.

Remote islands like Santa Rosa have hiking trails through rugged mountains with glimpses of wildlife, including tiny, endemic island foxes, at dawn and dusk. Spend the night at Santa Cruz Island’s only lodging option, Scorpion Canyon Campground, a half-mile hike from the beach.

Easy-access shoreline campsites line the park’s major lakes, but the wildest, quietest destinations sit deep in the interior of the Kabetogama Peninsula. Reserve a backcountry campsite along the Chain of Lakes or on the central peninsula’s waters, where your only companions for a spectacular aurora borealis show will be the loons and moose.

Best Wildlife Viewing: Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska

This coast-meets-mountains reserve takes wildlife watching to the next level. Use the park’s only maintained long trail to the outlook over Harding Icefield for breathtaking panoramic views of this expansive, icy landscape. Along the way, keep an eye out for grizzlies, black bears, wolverines, lynx, wolves, and mountain goats. From a kayak or tour boat, look out for orcas, humpback whales, and dolphins among the waves and Steller sea lions and harbor seals on the beaches

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

Brazilian free-tailed bats are a star attraction at this Chihuahuan Desert park. Each year, these flying critters make their way back from their winter grounds in Mexico to roost in the park’s intricate network of limestone caves. August and September bring the best bat watching when the year’s babies take to the skies with their parents. Around sunset, the bats spiral out of the cavern’s Natural Entrance by the hundreds of thousands to eat insects.

Best Hiking Trails: North Cascades National Park, Washington

Known as the “American Alps,” this park holds more than 400 miles of trails that take hikers and horseback riders to wildflower meadows, old-growth forests, glacier viewpoints, and remote lakes. One standout is the Desolation Peak Trail, which leads to a mountaintop lookout cabin where Jack Kerouac spent a summer. North Cascades remains well off the radar: Just over 30,000 people visited last year, a mere 2 percent of the traffic of its southern neighbor, Mount Rainier. The terrain is so remote and wild, the park is considering restoring grizzly bear populations here.

Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Explore the sunset-colored canyons that ancestral Pueblo people called home in Mesa Verde. Here, skillfully designed cliff dwellings, some with up to 150 rooms and large enough to house one hundred people, remain tucked into protected stone alcoves, just as they’ve been for 800 years. In summer, rangers lead hiking tours inside some of them, including Cliff Palace, the largest such village in North America, and Balcony House, which involves climbing up cliffside ladders and crawling through rock tunnels. After dark, look up. Mesa Verde’s skies are well-protected from light pollution, earning it International Dark Sky Park status in 2021.

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, this park offers pristine beaches, exceptional snorkeling, and the chance to explore the historic Fort Jefferson. Located on Garden Key, the second largest of the park’s seven islands (70 miles from Key West), the military stronghold was the largest masonry fort in the Western Hemisphere during the mid-1800s. During the Civil War, it became one of the nation’s largest prisons.

Kids will find more than just a day at the beach in this welcome pocket of nature amidst the nearby bustle of Chicago, a 45-minute drive away. An impressively diverse number of ecosystems in this compact park let families explore wetlands, oak savannas, pine forests, prairies, and 15 miles of sandy shoreline in a day.

This week we bring you some images from American author Florence Page Jaques’s 1939 book The Geese Fly High, illustrated by her husband Francis Lee Jaques and published by the University of Minnesota Press. The two married in 1927 when Florence was 37 and Francis was almost 40, and enjoyed a lifetime of outdoors adventures, which produced several books.

The Geese Fly High chronicles a winter vacation following the waterfowl migration. Beginning with a duck-hunting trip in Minnesota, Florence writes a lively and detailed account of their trip down the Mississippi flyway, through the White River bottom swamps in Arkansas, and around the Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary in the marshlands of Louisiana.

-Indiana has won every food contest she’s ever been in, whether it’s eating or cooking. The sad thing is she only knows how to make those hot dogs that you boil, but she’s got it down to a science.

-She volunteers at wildlife sanctuaries because animals are better company than her neighbors.

-She has a soft spot for cardinals, which is probably why she hasn’t murdered Ohio yet.

-In the course of two weeks she binge watched all of Parks and Recreation because New York used it to insult her at a meeting.

-She broke New York’s hand the week after that, but she enjoys the show as long as no one uses it against her.

-During the French and Indian War, she was on the French side. She cut her hair really short, wore a decorative mask, and proceeded to give New Hampshire nightmares that he still has to this day.

-Indiana tans easily and she never wears sunscreen. This is a problem because she goes from tan to third degree burns all over from the sun. That’s how she spent the summer of 2003, lying in her house covered in those ice packs kids have in their lunches.

-Her favorite state is anyone but Illinois. She gets along with Michigan pretty well, she goes to Ohio for advice, she talks to Wisconsin if she wants alcohol advice, and she talks to Minnesota about sports.

-Her CIA record labels her as unpredictable and dangerous. If the X-files were real, she would be one.

-She owns a dog. He’s a chocolate lab named Captain Chaos. He likes knocking people over as soon as they walk into her house.

-The summer of 2007 she and Illinois broke into a Little Caesar’s and stole all the bread they could find. To this day she still finds bread hidden in weird places in her house.

-She was briefly involved in the mafia in 1920, but she left after punching Illinois in the face and creating a fake identity. For ten years she pretended to be a French immigrant and the mafia never found her.

-She and Nebraska will literally joust on tractors. It usually ends in broken bones and fiery explosions, but that hasn’t stopped them yet!
