Mary teaches to us say yes

John 2:1-12

On the third day there was a wedding in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”* So they took it.And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroomand said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.”Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. After this, he and his mother and his disciples went down to Capernaum and stayed there only a few days. 

Many people are surprised when I tell them that this is one of my favorite passages in the bible. The reason is because I look at this passage and see more than Jesus’ first miracle. I see Mary and Jesus’s obedience to Mary. I see the biggest lesson I have learned in my life: say yes: to “Do what ever he tells you.” Mary trusts Jesus to do the right thing. Even after Jesus voices His concern at performing this miracle, she looks at the waiters and says, “Do what ever he tells you.”  We can learn so many things from this. I look at this passage and know with confidence that I can bring my prayers to Mary and she is going to plead on my behalf and Jesus is going to obey His mother. My prayers will be heard and answered. But the most important lesson I have learned is this, “Do whatever he tells you.” I need to put my trust in the Lord and know that His plans are perfect, and I need to trust my mother and know that she will never lead me astray.
