Lomwé and Macua communities in Mozambique’s Zambezia province traditionally harvest wild mushrooms to eat alongside staples like cassava. Conservationists are working with hundreds of indigenous women there to commercialize the sale of mushrooms like the vivid orange Eyukuli (Cantharellus platyphyllus) as part of a wider strategy to protect forests surrounding Gilé National Park.
The mushrooms are harvested in a 55,600-hectare (137,400-acre) buffer zone surrounding the national park during the height of the Southern African country’s wet season, from November to April. After harvesting, the fungi are cleaned, dried, and transported by road to Maputo, the capital, more than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) away. There, they’re packaged and sold under the trade name Supa Mama.
This is the first time that native Mozambican mushrooms have been commercialized in the country.
Gilé covers an area of 286,100 hectares (707,000 acres), much of this covered in miombo woodlands that include tree species, like those from the Brachystegia genus, whose roots host mycorrhizal fungi. These underground networks help the trees absorb nutrients and moisture, and announce their presence in the form of diverse fruiting bodies above the ground: mushrooms.
Providing an economic incentive to protect the trees could be key to leaving them standing while promoting the wild mushroom harvest, says Alessandro Fusari...
Communities living around Gilé harvest at least 46 species of mushroom for local consumption. These include eyukuli, the trumpet-shaped khaduve (Lactifluus edulis), and the broad-capped namapele (Lactarius densifolius). So far, a total of five species are being harvested and packed for commercial sale under the project.

Pictured: Cantharellus platyphyllus (called Eyukuli in Lomwé) is one of 46 wild mushroom species Indigenous women harvest.
“Slowly, the community, especially the women, are learning that keeping the trees standing means having a bigger production of mushrooms,” Fusari tells Mongabay. “Since they’re starting to see commercial results, more and more avoid cutting trees.”
The project, which is supported by the French Development Agency, is in its third year, meaning the team doesn’t yet have the hard data to determine its success. But, Fusari says, the reduction in tree cutting “is a clear trend that is happening.”
Mushroom harvesting around Gilé is typically done by women while out doing other tasks, such as gathering firewood. The mushroom project works with 900 or so members of 30 women’s groups drawn from communities living in the national park’s buffer zone.
Gilé National Park is home to animals that include buffalo, wildebeest, sable, waterbuck, and around 50 elephants. Many of these animals were reintroduced from other areas to rebuild the wildlife wiped out during Mozambique’s 1977-1992 civil war.
...Giving commercial value to something normally only collected for subsistence is part of a wider program to promote sustainable agriculture...
The teams collecting mushrooms have already been trained in sustainable harvesting methods. For instance, they cut rather than pull the mushrooms from the ground, to avoid damaging the mycelium, or root-like structure, beneath the surface; they brush the dirt off the mushrooms wherever they pick them, to leave as many spores there as possible; and the women carry their harvest home in open baskets, to allow spore dispersal along the way.

"Woman is a curved line. Curved are the movements of the sun and moon. Curved is the movement of the wooden spoon in the clay pot. Curved is the resting position. Have you noticed that all animals bend over when they sleep? We women , we are a river of superficial and deep curves in every inch of the body. The curves move things in a circle. Man and woman unite in a single curve in the meandering paths. Curved are lips and kisses. Curved is uterus. Egg. Celestial vault. The curves contain all the secrets of the world."

Best Locations in Mozambique to Visit
The enormous country of Mozambique undoubtedly has its fair share of tourist attractions because it is located in a large bend of East Africa, where the tropical heart of the continent gradually transforms into the temperate south of the continent. Alabaster-white sands line the coastline, framing it with a fringe of palm palms. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are home to strange critters that resemble manatees and coral sponges that are in bloom. Then the interior, which is a mosaic of swaying savannah grasses and baobab woods, takes over, and the habitats of the renowned Rift Valley start to emerge. There, the main attractions are the grazing elephants and hopping gazelles, as well as the Zambezia highlands' carved landscapes and the locals' rustic tribal settlements. Who's forgotten the captivating capital of Mozambique? Jazz and reggae are the heartbeats of Maputo, which also has a faint Portuguese flavour.
Tumblr media
Hopes were high after a protracted civil war that the country would stabilise and reopen, but recent upheavals have shaken those hopes, so make sure to look out for FCO advisories and the like in advance. Mozambique is a country located in southeastern Africa that is well known for its gorgeous coastal scenery and its amazing wildlife. If you're looking to visit Mozambique, there are a few locations you definitely won't want to miss. In this blog post, we'll take a look at some of the best places to visit in Mozambique. So whether you're an experienced traveller or a first-time tourist that’s planning to have a luxury mozambican safari tour, read on for some great tips!
Maputo
The beautiful capital of Mozambique serves as a lesson in all things colonial. The Portuguese cleared the nearby swamps, elevating it to the status of the first city. Then all you had to do was construct the huge, imperial structures like the train station, the charming Casa do Ferro (designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel), and rings of broad boulevards dotted with palm trees à la the Algarve, and presto—you had a tiny outpost of Europe in Africa! Maputo has been reclaimed by the locals for a long time now, and the town is now renowned for its captivating bazaars that buzz with activity and brim with East African batik, its rowdy hip-hop bars, and that scrumptious fusion of Keralan and Arabic foods in the eateries!
Tumblr media
Gorongosa National Park
The arid and sandy landscapes of the Gorongosa National Park occupy the very heart of Mozambique, denoting the furthest southernmost extremities of the East African Rift Valley. In truth, this area's undulating savannah and grassy hills have been protected as a reserve ever since the Portuguese took over, when they served as a private wildlife reserve for the colonial elite of the time. The area was transformed into a complete national park in the 1960s, and today it is praised as being among the best places in the nation for safaris. Visit this location if you want to view bouncing bushbucks, elephant herds, waterbucks, crowned cranes, wild warthogs, and more!
Tumblr media
Quirimbas National Park
The Quirimbas National Park is the province of Cabo Delgado's magnificent natural gem. It overflows the northern mountain plateaux of Mozambique and reaches the Indian Ocean. Large expanses of montane forests, savannah grasslands, and endless mangroves can be found along the route, in addition to some brilliant coral reefs that rim the shoreline where the reserve stretches into the ocean. Quirimbas is a terrific site to visit if you want to view wildlife like African leopards, herds of elephants, and crocodiles all on the same day as you see the huge dugong and schools of tropical fish with vibrant colours!
Tumblr media
Bazaruto Archipelago
The Bazaruto Archipelago is unique in every way. They are a scattering of long, thin islands in the Indian Ocean, a patchwork of glistening, turquoise seas and coral gardens, wind-tossed sand dunes, and ochre-hued coastal hills that are dotted with scrub and swaying coconut palm groves. The largest island in the vicinity, known simply as Bazaruto, has wide sandy bays where galumphing dugong patrol, while the interior is cut up by karst hills and boulder stones. The idyllic Ilha de Benguerra, where opulent honeymoon resorts rise above the white dunes in a jumble of swinging hammocks and tanning decks, is located a bit to the south.
Tumblr media
Pemba
On the Cabo Delgado coastline, Pemba sits on its very own peninsula. It does a good job of hiding the more industrial districts that have recently popped up in this area because of its lovely colonial architecture and charming frontispieces in the Portuguese style. The African beaches that stretch along the seashore in the area deserve that honour. While the dazzling (and naturally deep) waters of Pemba Bay have turned into a haven for SCUBA divers, they draw large crowds with their tropical heat and swinging palms. Visit the picturesque Quirimbas National Park, stroll through forests of enormous baobabs, view the sombre remains of the slave trade at Ponta Romero, or go to the quaint fishing hamlet scattered among the bays of Ibo Island.
Tumblr media
Tofo
To the north and south of the tropical Tofo, a broad, sunlit arc of powdery beige sand traces its course down the shoreline. At the same time, the Indian Ocean's turquoise waves flow through the bays, swimmers and snorkelers splash through the shallows, and residents are crammed into bobbing fishing skiffs with a smile. Travellers seeking sun, sand, sea, and leisure will find Tofo town's laid-back lifestyle and the heady after-dark ambience of the half-Rasta beach bars hard to resist. It makes sense why some people are calling the thriving settlement along the coastline bends of the Jangamo District the new Goa.
Tumblr media
Inhaca Island
The tiny piece of land known as Inhaca Island, which is situated across Maputo Bay from the country's capital of Maputo, is an intriguing little treat and a great place to visit for a day trip to escape the heat of the city. It was once a part of the East African continent but only a few millennia ago (about seven), and now it floats out between its coral gardens, which are in full bloom. Additionally, there are windswept palm tree clumps and sloping beaches with yellow sand to explore. However, keep in mind that Inhaca Island is not the most accessible location and is undeveloped, mainly due to its use as a marine research facility.
Tumblr media
Island of Mozambique
Whether you can believe it or not, this tiny piece of land that floats amid the sparkling seas of the Indian Ocean was once the centre of Portuguese East Africa. It was elevated to grandeur by the European sailors and merchants who made their way around the cape, and during the 16th century, it developed into a significant centre for business and administration. As a result, there are now several intriguing colonial structures, including the Church of Santo António, the Old Town Fortifications, and a gorgeous whitewashed hospital. With the Makuti thatched town and the stunning tropical beaches, Mozambique's unique identity also emerges. The entire area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so don't miss it!
Tumblr media
Vilankulo
Vilankulo is noteworthy even if simply for serving as the entrance to the aforementioned Bazaruto Archipelago splendours. But not just for that; if you come here to take your time before boarding one of the dhows waiting on the shore, you're in for a relaxing treat. Yes, this laid-back beachside location is also home to a number of its campgrounds, shacks made of bending bamboo, a bustling local market, and beer bars. It's simple to understand why Vilankulo is growing in popularity when you consider the small number of uninhabited Indian Ocean beaches that are near the town and where the horizon blends from golden yellow sand to cobalt skies.
Tumblr media
Lake Cahora Bassa
To the very heart of Tete Province in western Mozambique, the enormous lake waters of Cahora Bassa reach all the way from the Zambian border. They comprise one of the greatest networks of freshwater lakes in all of Africa, totalling a staggering 2,700 square kilometres. The enormous Cahora Bassa Dam, a towering wall of concrete and steel that measures 171 metres in height and 303 metres in width, is located at one end. If you enjoy marvelling at amazing technical feats, the trip is definitely worthwhile! Additionally, attractive fishing cottages, a few houseboats, and the occasional baroque church bearing witness to the former Portuguese influence may today be seen all along the reservoir's banks.
Is Mozambique The Destination For You?
