Lightning Bolt Based on the original Alpha artwork by Christopher Rush
I love playing red, I love aggro, and I love bolting face. Definitely the only card in the Boon Cycle that I actually play regularly.

So, did not do well in the main event or in the Pioneer RCQ.
However
There was an 11-person Modern RCQ on Sunday, and I had Izzet Murktide built. Which is a good thing because I went undefeated (2 intentional draws) to win the invite.
Deck:
4 Dragon's Rage Channeler
4 Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
2 Brazen Borrower
2 Subtlety
3 Murktide Regent
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Preordain
2 Spell Pierce
3 Unholy Heat
4 Counterspell
2 Force of Negation
4 Expressive Iteration
4 Mishra's Bauble
3 Spirebluff Canal
3 Steam Vents
1 Fiery Islet
1 Thundering Falls
2 Island
4 Flooded Strand
4 Scalding Tarn
Sideboard:
2 Cast into the Fire
2 Brotherhood's End
2 Flusterstorm
2 Stern Scolding
2 Force of Negation
1 Unlicensed Hearse
2 Magus of the Moon
2 Subtlety

Modern Horizons 3 has like 10 cards spoiled and I already love it. Psychic frog already a contender for best card of the year and it's only February.

I 💜 Kiln Fiend
Tumblr media
Turn 1: swift spear in for 1, or play with fire and set up for turn 2, or get a lava dart in the yard.
Turn 2: kiln fiend, or plot your highway robbery
Turn 3-4: GO. FUCKING. OFF. ALL BLOCKERS MUST DIE, throw your mountains in the gravehole, turn 5 does not exist for you.
Sideboard: Skullcrack for the boros burn. Scorching shot for Sheoldred. Smash to Smithereens for the artifact enjoyers. Blood Moon if modern gets a little too bullshit.

RCQ number 3, and the last one of the year, gonna be an interesting one freshly post ban, have not at all gotten an opportunity to change my sideboard so fingers crossed, honestly not expecting it to be too bad, hammer is probably one of the least effected decks and has probably gotten better in the wake of the bans so, wish me luck !! Will update throughout the day

Charbelcher and a WIP Sideboard
My current pride and joy deck (and like half a sideboard).
Belcher has always been like, the gold standard for what I considered MTG. I wanted to play legacy Belcher desperately in highschool, but alas, I couldn't afford a Taiga then (and lo and behold, now can't afford LED), but Modern Belcher has become a far more interesting deck for me than the legacy one ever is. With Zendikar 3, Adventures in the Skyclave Realms, we got the MDFC spell-lands, and with it, a whole new deck was born. You were somehow slotting lands into Belcher, and even getting access to toolbox spells if you were staring down a grindy game. Retrace the Paths went from a card pretty much no one cared about to being the win-con setup of one of the most well-known combo decks in MTG history. Combo routes with Pyromancer's Ascension gives you an out when you're staring down a pithing needle, and there's really no end to what weird setups you can do when you can literally stack your whole deck.
Belcher sits up there with only a few other decks in the category of "play the game in a different way to win". Doomsday boils your deck down to five cards, Lands is --get this-- almost all lands, and Belcher tries to exclude lands altogether in some way. There are more, of course, but it's so interesting to see such a stark difference in these decks from what would be considered normal magic. Now, some would argue that you now play Modern Belcher at least like conventional magic thanks to MDFC spell-lands, and that's relatively true. But the rules interactions with MDFC and Recross/Belcher I think set it still enough apart (not to mention the deck building restrictions).
It's something I feel we need to experience more of in MTG. Those "weird" decks, that twist the rules and concepts of the game, that make someone go "I didn't know you could build a deck like that". I feel like only nowadays are we delving deeper and deeper into the comprehensive rules for the game, and utilizing more and more of the obscure rulings to craft around. There's so much we can get out of such a complex game, and I can't wait to see how more and more cards let us craft around these rules.
I don't have much to say about my deck personally, it's a Wish-Board variant I'm trying out and still building what I want into it. It pilots well, plays well with my current group for Modern, and it's everything I've ever wanted to play in MTG. I couldn't care less if it's topping the meta or just a niche pick in tournaments, it's truly the MTG I want to play, and I gotta say, it's pretty fun to count to seven.
