Have you ever heard that The Beach Boys were one of the greatest, most influential bands of all time- either from critics or other famous musicians (like Paul McCartney) and you never really understood why because you thought they were just that corny surfing band? And even if you were curious, have you looked at their discography and saw that they released 30 albums over 50 years and felt dread not knowing where to start? Well...I’m here to try and help.

There’s definitely a lot of albums you do NOT need to listen to (they had a rough 80s & 90s) but, I’m choosing a variety of albums that illustrate best how- not only do they have an incredibly experimental discography and variety of sound that most people are unaware of- I’ve also chosen the albums (i feel) are the most essential and show how they’re deeply misunderstood as a band, and yes, how these albums have indeed influenced the development of psychedelic, prog, and even punk rock. So, Inspired by other templates on the web, here’s my own lil flowchart for classic rock or 60s & 70s music fans, or for those that are curious. Hopefully this helps!

please do!!! coheed is so so good. for a beginner I'd recommend Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV (volume one) or In Keeping Secrets of the Silent Earth: 3, but if you want a more pop-adjacent intro to coheed you could start with Vaxis II, which is their most recent album and it's also. so good.

WRITING IN GENERAL (For those who don't want to die like Stormtroopers)

SlickWrite: Completely free; online. Checks grammar, punctuation, flow, and writing style according to different settings (including fiction writing).

ProWritingAid: [RECOMMENDED] One of the most thorough online proofreader I've ever used. Although when using a free account gives extremely thorough feedback, with +20 different in-depth reports, for only the first 500 words. However, you can earn a premium account license (for a year or for life) if you get 10 or 20 new users signing up for free; (if you wouldn't mind doing so using the link above and help me earn mine, please). The settings allow you to check your writing according to your needs, from general to formal to creative. It has a bonus that you can check depending on the genre you're writing. For example, in creative, you can choose romance or sci-fiction (there are 14 sub-genre in total). And just like google docs, you can share a document, and people can view, comment or edit it too.

LanguageTool: [RECOMMENDED] Another excellent proofreader. It also has a word limit in free accounts, but if you use the add-on for Google Docs, it counts each page as a new document, so hitting the word limit is nearly impossible. It helps you to rewrite a sentence (3 a day), even if it doesn't raise any flags; it's very useful for when your sentence is grammatically correct, but it doesn't feel quite right.

Grammarly, Hemingway Editor: No so great, but they do the basic job.

Would Ax fall for rickrolling?

Given that Ax a) does his best to approach human culture with an open mind, and b) often fails due to his ingrained assumption that andalites know best... I think he'd not only fall for Rickrolls, but he'd assume that there's a deep hidden message in substituting a "Never Gonna Give You Up" link for a real one. Like, the first time it happens he'd assume the link-maker attached a music video in error. The second time, he'd correctly conclude he stumbled upon a bit of human culture he doesn't yet understand. The third time, he'd go back and start obsessively charting the pattern of hyperlinks that do and do not include Rick Astley.

By the end of the month — rather than admit defeat by simply asking Tobias or Marco what's up with the Rick Astley links — he'd have written an entire algorithm to track its use. There would be a whole flowchart that would outline:

Approximately 1.03% of all internet links go to "Never Gonna Give You Up," more than any other single page.

Of links to "Never Gonna Give You Up," 99.92% are misleadingly labeled.

Words considered profane in one or more Earth languages are 1.31 times more likely to be used in the comments sections of threads that link to Rick Astley than threads that link elsewhere.

Strings of punctuation with no grammatical meaning, such as #%#!*$!, are 1.08 times more likely to be used in the comments sections of threads that link to Rick Astley.

Posts which are especially likely to contain misleading links are, from most to least common: a) threads about leaked media such as films, b) threads about leaked government documents, c) threads where an argument has already gone past the stage of everyone calling everyone else Hitler, and d) threads offering the sale of material goods.

So on and so forth, forever. Ax will understand the hidden message here. He's determined. And he's definitely on the right track, given his superior andalite knowledge of computers.

Motivation Series

Hi everyone! posting a quick update to tumblr! It'll be a bit short because I'm sick again and not feeling great at the moment! 🤒

Summary:

Yuu's route is fully proofread and scripted

BG changes are coded

Sprite appearances, disappearances, and positions are coded (expressions not coded yet)

Some sprite variations have been done (for Morgan and Yuu)

All scoring and variables have been checked

A play test with self voicing has been completed

The Ramble:

Sooooo.

Yuu's route is fully coded and I've done one full playtest with self voicing. Most of the sprite and character art still isn't done or coded.

But I have the basics done and the route is currently in alpha-mode.

So the final coded word count for Gilded Shadows is.......*drumroll*

1,036,000. 💪

I've done a few of Morgan and Yuu's sprite variations (additional outfits, hairstyles, etc).

I need to do a couple of additional ones for Yuu but don't have them completed yet.

When it comes to additional sprite art, two of the new side characters in this route have sprite art already complete or 99% complete. But I have two additional characters to draw from scratch.

And two "Bobs" to set up.

But I probably won't be working on that for another couple of weeks.

What will I be working on? Well...

Upcoming Weeks:

I think in the upcoming week I will be working on coding in the music and SFX as well as setting up the flowcharts.

I've been having a lot of issues with my right hand since it's winter and that always makes the issues flare up but I'm hoping it calms down by the time I have to work on art. 

For now, I will just be focusing on other things.

With flowcharts, I have to make the templates, then create the official images, then code and, finally, test. That's the next major thing I'll be getting out of the way.

After that, it's pretty much just the rest of the art. ╰(*°▽°*)╯

I have some updates for WSC but I'll probably talk about them in a future update. I'm a bit tired and headachey at the moment but my calendar is yelling at me to post an update so I thought I'd at least throw a GS update out there since it's the main project right now.

That's all for now. I'm going to go hide in a blanket fort and swim in a cup of hot tea.

September & October Development Update

Overview

A fair few milestones were achieved during the past few months. The pixel art and map sectors are starting to near its completion, at which point the bottleneck now shifts towards the writing sector instead (such as NPCs and Flavor text), and the RPGMaker sector. Some small tasks regarding art still remain, such as portraits, but the fact that much higher priority tasks take precedence as well as the low number of art related tasks itself puts it on the back burner for now. 

Going into a more personal aspect, I have not contributed much to the team due to being busy with the real life aspect, though hopefully November should be different. However, our awesome team members were still able to make a good amount of progress, especially with maps (which are really good).

Progress

Music organization and implementation

Even though most songs needed for chapter 3 have already been finished prior, it’s only just been implemented properly. There are also some extra music tasks that have come up along the way as well, but overall this sector is pretty close to completion.

Maps

Majority of maps are now functional within the RPGMV engine to continue making events and other things. Most are just about at the polish stage.

Flavor Texts

Only a map or two have their flavor texts fleshed out. However, it should be noted that most of our writing is dedicated towards NPC dialogue at the moment. The current flavor texts are more done on passing when testing maps.

NPCs

RPGMaker wise, 2 maps are completely done now in terms of NPCs. NPC dialogue for other maps are also in progress.

Writing wise, there is still quite a lot to go through.

Overhaul sheet organizer

This is a more developmental aspect, where all the tasks are now concentrated into a central sheet so it’s easier to manage and communicate, and so tasks don’t become lost as well.

Organization of files and compiling older assets

As mentioned above, organization is needed as some older works are being left forgotten for a while. For example, an asset might be finished early but require other tasks to be completed as well before implementation.

What’s Next?

As mentioned before, the bottleneck now starts to shift into the writing and RPGMaker aspects. 

Writing NPCs or flavor text might seem like a small minor aspect, but surprisingly, it can be quite a large task, especially for newer areas where it has to be made from the ground up. There is also an aspect of organization involved here, as we’re dealing with quite a large amount of text in different areas or NPCs, and have to keep track of what belongs where. It can be quite tedious as the process might feel disjointed and also due to the sheer quantity of text required, relative to main cutscenes.

As for RPGMaker, the main two tasks would be the actual implementation of events, such as populating the maps with flavor or NPCs, and organization of said events so the individual elements actually connect together (which is another whole type of task in itself).
