Helpless
With; Luke Patterson
Tumblr media
A/n: IM BACK! Been very busy but I’m happy I could write again. A little out of left field with this character but I watched JATP when it first came out. I just rewatched it and had to write something for it. So here we are, enjoy! 💜
Warnings: None
————————————————————
It’s early afternoon when you’re watching Clueless with Alex in the Melina’s garage. Having found the vhs amongst your box of old clothes and setting up the loft so it was no longer a storage space and instead a makeshift living room. It was pretty difficult trying to move a lot of the objects, as a lot of the times things would simply fall through your hands. Which is why you had convinced Julie to help you. You’re saddened at the memory, knowing the girl was mad at the four of you for having blown off your gig at her school dance. You’re drawn away from the thought when you see Paul Rudd enter the screen, longing eyes watching her dance during the party scene. You always found it funny that the two main characters were blind to their own affection for each other for half of the film.
“Where’s our Paul Rudd? I mean, what’s a girl gotta do to get one?” You whine dramatically, brows raising to inquire Alex’s scoff from the couch across you.
“Hello? You have one, you’re both just too stupid to see it.” He quips instantly, amused by your astonishment.
“I wish. Can we ignore my one-sided pining for one of my best friends and instead discuss your ghostly romance? I’m waiting for you and Willie to finally come clean.” You defend, triumphant smirk etching your face when he chucks a throw pillow at you.
“Y/n, if even the afterlife doesn’t give you enough reason to confess your feelings, then you’re really a lost cause”
“I’m not confessing anything! If he really felt the same he would have said something. I can’t jeopardize the band, or more importantly the group, with whatever crush I have on him.” You argue, sadness lacing your tone as you continue. “Besides, it’s pretty obvious he has an eye for Julie.”
“He’s not in love with Julie, he’s wants you! Why do you think he’s always all over you?”
“Because he likes to torture me.” You counter, smirking when the blonde groans dramatically. Throwing his head against the cushions to signify his distaste of your delusions.
“You two are helpless. I mean, Luke-“
As if on cue, the two missing band members poof into the garage with looks of defeat. Looking at Alex expectantly at the mention of Luke’s name. You look to each other in a panic, not sure what to say since they’ve caught you in the middle of conversation.
“Luke, totally loved this movie back in the day. That’s what we were talking about, the cultural impact Clueless had during our time!” You cringe at his attempt of a cover, relieved when the boys seem to buy it.
“What’s up with you two?” You question in hopes of changing the subject.
“Trying to come up with a way for Julie to forgive us.” Reggie mutters helplessly, sitting beside Alex on the longer couch as Luke throws himself to lay on top of you, head resting in your stomach as he sighs. You try to remain calm, after all, it’s common for Luke to be affectionate. Alex smirks, and you do your best not to lunge at him from across the room.
“It’s helpless, we got so caught up with Caleb and totally ditched her. I feel awful.” The brunette above you adds, the concern for the girl lacing his tone sets off a pang in your heart. Of course you’re also upset about the fight with Julie, but can’t help but feel a bit of jealousy. Luke grabs your wrist, placing your hand atop his head to signal you to run your fingers through his hair. A common occurrence between you two. You want to scream, having him so close was too much. You look to the blonde across the room, eyebrows raised with an expectant look that reads “set boundaries, dumbass.” And hes right, it’s not fair to yourself if you let him be so clingy if he doesn’t feel the same.
“Well, let’s brainstorm then.” You announce, moving out from under luke and getting into a sitting position. The distaste on his face from your absence is adamant, and he almost looks hurt at your actions. Enough for even Reggie to pick up on, rejoining the conversation when you turn off the television he was just entranced by. “What if we booked a gig for tonight, show her that we’re committed to the band?” You suggest simply, holding back a laugh when they all seem astonished at the notion.
“That’s a great idea! We could check for clubs with open mics around town, just like we used to!” Luke scrambles from his seat at the idea. “You’re a genius.” Hes softer this time, attention fully on you before he plants a swift peck to the top of your head and poofing out as quick as he came. Instantly, you grab a throw pillow amongst the cushions and put it up to your face, screaming into the fabric to let out all the pent up frustration at his actions.
“What’s up with her?” Reggie questions carefully, stunned at your outburst.
“You know girls and their…Hormones. Mood swings and all that. Let’s go before we become the brunt of it!” Alex replies, grabbing Reggie so they can both leave before you can stop them.
*****************
“I don’t know man, sometimes a little fire can make things better on stage.” Reggie argues as the three band members rehearse. Y/n having gone to julie’s room to search for an outfit for the upcoming performance. “Like you and y/n” the boy continues.
“Wh-what is thag supposed to mean?” Luke forced a smirk whilst shifting in his stance, cheeks red at the comment.
“Cmon, everyone can see the way you look at her when you sing. Or, when you’re not singing. Basically all the time. You guys ooze chemistry.” He babbles on, Alex just as amused at Luke’s struggling defense.
“You should never say ooze again but yeah, I agree.” Alex chimes in, taking the opportunity to put in a good word for the girl.
“Okay, no. I have chemistry with everybody that I sing with.” The boy panics at their accusation. “Seriously, uh watch!” Going on to serenade Reggie with tonight’s chorus.
“Wow, I see chemistry.”
“That was pretty hot.”
“See, it’s not just with her.” Luke assures the two, annoyed with their looks of disbelief. “Whatever, even if I did want to have chemistry with her, and I don’t. She doesn’t, or wouldn’t, share the same feelings. And on top of that, we can’t jeopardize the band.” The brunette rambles on, eye brown raised when Alex abruptly stands from behind his drum set and grabs his band mate by the collar. Poofing out of the room to leave a very confused Reggie.
In an instant, the two boys appear in Julie’s room, having terrified the girl searching for an outfit. Luke and y/n scream simultaneously, y/n having just pulled a new shirt over her head when they arrived. Alex, having seen it all before, awaits their dramatic responses to end. They had only seen the bottom half of her bra before the shirt was pulled down, but it’s enough to have Luke covering his eyes and attempting to scramble out of the room. Effectively bumping into the door frame in his blind, flustered state.
“What the hell?”
“Sorry! So sorry! It was Alex, it was Alex!” The blonde in question holds back a smirk, the sheer panic of the pair would almost be endearing had they stopped bothering him with their pining.
“ENOUGH!” He announces to the pair, their panic subsiding at his yelling. Luke rubbing the forming bump on his head with a pout. “Ya know what? This has gone on FAR too long. So much so that I’m starting to think THIS is our unfinished business! So I’m forcing you two to sit down and talk about your feelings or so help me GOD I’ll find a way to bring you back to life just so I can kill you again!” With that, he disappears from the room to leave them in silence.
“He’s in a mood.” You mutter simultaneously, giggling awkwardly at the situation.
“What was he going on about anyway?” Luke moves to sit on the bed as he speaks, you following suit.
“Who knows.” You shrug, left to contemplate the situation your fellow bandmate has forced you into. “Is your head okay? Took a pretty hard hit.”
He forces an amused huff at your comment, nodding with a roll of his eyes. “I’m fine, sorry for barging in on you.”
“No worries, it was worth watching you panic.”
“I didn’t panic!”
“Right, lemme see if there’s a bump.” You shift closer in your knelt position to run your hand through his hair. Lifting the strands to study the red mark on the boy’s forehead.
“Bad?”
“You’ll survive.” You mutter teasingly, placing a soft peck to the abused skin without thinking. Leaning back onto your legs once becoming aware of the close proximity. You’re both silent, studying each other’s faces and basking in the unspoken confessions. Luke takes a deep breath, eyes trained on your lips before he bites his own in frustration and scrambles off of the bed. Your heart breaks at the action. You were stupid, to think he’d choose you.
“Listen, we can’t do this! I can’t, I can’t be near you like that.” Is all he says, pulling his beanie farther over his head whilst pacing the room.
“What do you mean?”
“What do you mean, what do I mean? I mean, when you’re all close and you smell good and your lips are just like, there! If I do it and you don’t like it then it’ll be weird and the band would be weird and-”
“If you do what?” You question loud enough over his rambling, stunned by his outburst. He freezes, suddenly feeling too exposed under your eyes.
“You know…” He scratches the back of his neck, motioning back and forth in the space between you and sighing when you still look puzzled. He groans, frustrated by the overwhelming emotions and miscommunication. He lessens the space between you. Crouching down so he’s at your level, searching your eyes before putting his lips onto yours. You’re shocked at first, taken aback by his forward-ness. He senses your hesitation, starting to pull away before you put your hand at the back of his neck to pull him closer. His cocky ass starts to smirk, and you put more passion into it to fluster him. He’s leaning over you on the bed now, too caught up in the feeling of you against him to want to stop for air.
“Told you he’d make the first move! Ouch!” Reggies muffled voice separates the both of you, you crane your neck to follow Luke’s glare at the window behind you. The boy above you chucking a pillow at the glass to warn away your other bandmates.
“Really?” Luke shakes his head in question at the two boys as they shrug. He ignores your attempt to push him off of you, looking down and smirking triumphantly at your flustered state. “You weren’t as shy a second ago.” He mutters so only you can hear, chuckling when you hit his chest in annoyance.
“Don’t be mad! We’ve been waiting years for this. Alex owes me and Julie ten bucks!”
“You bet on us?” The pair of you shout at the window, watching as the two clumsily climb in the room.
“That doesn’t matter! What matters is that I’m 20 bucks down the drain because I put too much faith in y/n.” Alex has the audacity to look disappointed in you.
“Get out!” Luke finally leans back so you can get up, attempting to usher the other two out of the room.
“Am I interrupting something in my own room?” Julie sets her backpack on the ground, surveying the situation as a smile slowly forms on her face.
“They kissed, didn’t they? Oh my god I cannot wait to tell Flynn! Did me and Reggie win the bet?” Her excitement falters at you and Luke’s glares. “Did I say bet? I meant set! We have to go rehearse for our set tonight, so the three of us will go set up and leave you two for a second!” With that, they’re out of the room in seconds.
You put your hands over your face with a groan, overwhelmed with all that’s just happened.
“Hey, you alright?” Luke’s hands go to your wrists to gently pull them from your face. You roll your eyes, hitting his chest at that same shit-eating smirk that somehow always makes your heart flutter.
“Stop that!”
“Stop what?”
“Smiling like that, all cocky.”
“Can you blame me? I got the girl and I won the bet for them.”
“I would have made the move before you ran off of the bed all flustered!”
“I do not get flustered, ever.”
“Tell that to the golf ball on your forehead.” That’s all it takes for him to charge you. Your attempt of backing away no match for his speed when he pulls you up and over his shoulder. Poofing into the garage and throwing you onto the couch. Attacking your face with a few quick kisses before turning towards the gushing band mates and acting as though nothing just happened.
“Alright, let’s rehearse!”

Name 7 Comfort Films and Tag 7 People
Thank you @bellamyblakru for the tag! Those are some brilliant film choices 😊 I am borrowing POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl off you, hope you don’t mind!
Tagging: @wings-of-an-angel @be-the-bravest @tamaraheartz @foreversummer-15 @danystormbornsnow @bellarkes-earper-swan @daenerys-the-unburnt and anyone else who’s bored in quarantine!
As usual, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, and please let me know if you’re sick of me tagging you in these games 😂
Again, sorry for the novel of text explaining my thoughts on each film #sorrynotsorry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Mary Poppins (1964)
- This is one I’ve watched ever since I can remember, and I just love it. It’s funny and sad at times, and it’s such a classic that the new sequel will never compare ever in my eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- So this is actually my favourite Avengers film. I watch all the Marvel films with my brother, and this is the first one we ever watched several years ago now, but it’s just so brilliant. I love Peggy Carter, she’s just such an icon. I love how everyone underestimates skinny!Steve, I love how even when he goes through Howard Stark’s beef machine his character is the same, and he’s just so good. And his friendship with Bucky is goals 👌🏻
(I picked this gif because Steve just looks so happy and proud, and then his face when he peeks out from his shield is actually 🥺)
Tumblr media
3) Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
- Another one of my childhood favourites. Little me just loved all Robin Williams’ impressions and the make-me-a-lady scene, and all the times he nearly got caught as a man or a woman or in general. It’s just such a great film with such an honest plot even if it’s very over-the-top and hilarious. My favourite scene when I was young was definitely when she was cooking and her boobs caught on fire, because of course 😂❤️
Tumblr media
4) Just Like Heaven (2005)
- This one I only found about a month ago, but it hit me really hard, and I just loved it. It’s a bit cheesy, but I loved Mark Ruffalo’s character and also Mark Ruffalo, and he just loves Elizabeth so much *wipes tear that I would cry if I was a person who cried at movies*.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5) Mulan (1998)
- This is me and my siblings’ favourite Disney film, and I can’t count how many times we’ve watched it. I just love Mulan’s spirit, and how she doesn’t let anything stop her from fighting in her father’s place and damn if she isn’t better than all the men in the army, Shang included? And she’s such a good person, she goes and helps the army even though they left her to die in the snow for being a woman (😡) and then everyone in China bows to her 🥳 Also, my sister does brilliant impressions of the Matchmaker, Shan Yu and Granny Fa 😂😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6)Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
- This is another series me and my brother have gone through, but the first is my favourite. I relate to Elizabeth, because I too would much rather run off and join a pirate crew with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom than be married off to the insufferable Commadore Norrington 😂 but seriously, I do love this film.
Tumblr media
7) Clueless (1995)
- Because this is a classic, and Cher is so much cleverer than people assume based on her personality and looks (I mean damn, I would never have been able to convince my teachers to change my grades ever) and young Paul Rudd is very pretty and this is just such a good film when you’ve had a sucky day and need ice-cream and a feel-good film.
My Top 5 All-Times Romance Movies Recommendation + Opinion!
1. Love, Rosie
tbh I never really liked romance movies, because I think they’re just a bunch of cliches stacked into one, but love, Rosie literally open my eyes about what love is, and more importantly about how gorgeous Sam Claflin and Lily is. Okay bottom line is I love this movie with all of my heart.
Synopsis :
Rosie and Alex are best friends until Alex's family moves to America. They gamble everything to keep their love and friendship alive over the years and miles.
2. Clueless
Yes, yes, yes! this movie might not bring your eyes to tears, but believe me when I said this is the cutest, funniest, and the most adorbs romance movie that I have ever watched! Cher always killed that hair flip moves! and god I wish I have Josh in my life!
Synopsis:
Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was -- and falls for him.
3. The Longest Ride
Heads Up, if your planning to watch this movie, prepare at least two boxes of tissues! this movie open up my eyes, heart, and soul! Scott Eastwood knows how to melt girls heart!
Synopsis:
Former bull-riding champion Luke (Scott Eastwood) and college student Sophia (Britt Robertson) are in love, but conflicting paths and ideals threaten to tear them apart: Luke hopes to make a comeback on the rodeo circuit, and Sophia is about to embark on her dream job in New York's art world. As the couple ponder their romantic future, they find inspiration in Ira (Alan Alda), an elderly man whose decades-long romance with his beloved wife withstood the test of time.
4. La la land
A lots of people that have watched this movie thinks that this movie is good just because of the musical elements in it. But no, this movie really did taught me that sacrifices in the name of love did happen in real life, and reality did sucks, but Mia and Sebastian, they cherish and enjoy every second and every moment in their own la la land right before returning to their own reality.
Synopsis :
Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are drawn together by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.
5. Love Actually
Liam Nesson, Thomas Sangster, and Kiera Knightley in one movie is beautifully over-whelming! this movie is DEFINETLY got a 5-stars from me!
Synopsis :
Nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all: love. Among the characters explored are David (Hugh Grant), the handsome newly elected British prime minister who falls for a young junior staffer (Martine McCutcheon), Sarah (Laura Linney), a graphic designer whose devotion to her mentally ill brother complicates her love life, and Harry (Alan Rickman), a married man tempted by his attractive new secretary.
5, 12, 42?
God, I’m so bad with ‘favorite’ things like this, but HERE GOES:
5. Guilty pleasure movie:
Off the bat, my head supplied ‘Clueless’.  I freaking love ‘Clueless’, but I don’t think there’s much to really be ashamed of with it? You have early 90s fashion, which is bad but somehow fantastic like, how was any of this ever a thing?? You have the main character, Cher, who is ditzy but, at the same time, actually really, really bright? I feel like her character doesn’t get enough credit for her actual smarts.  And you have a young freaking Paul Rudd.  Like.. what? more? could? you? want??? (Also a lot of actors who ended up starring in a lot of other places in the 90s and then on, and it’s really cool to see them at the start of their careers with their baby faces.)
12. Favorite movie quote:
GURL, YOU COULD NOT POSSIBLY EXPECT ME TO CHOOSE OUT OF THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF MOVIES, MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE QUOTE.  Nah, I’ll try.  So, when I first saw this, I had a bunch of things that started swirling in my head, but like, a lot of vague stuff, like murmurs of quotes that I remember.  I could give you much clearer (and honestly more genuine) answers if this was for TV shows.  But anyway, from the top of my head, I recall the movie ‘Never Let Me Go’.  I did have to look this quote back up but it really resonated me when I saw the film.  (SPOILERS KIND OF, BTW): “I come here and I imagine that this is the spot where everything I’ve lost since my childhood has washed up.  I tell myself, if that were true, and I waited long enough, then a tiny figure would appear on the horizon across the field, and gradually get larger until I’d see it was Tommy.  He’d wave and maybe call.  I don’t let the fantasy go beyond that.  I can’t let it.  I remind myself I was lucky to have had any time with him at all.  What I’m not sure about is if our lives have been so different from the lives of the people we save.  We all complete.  Maybe none of us really understand what we’ve lived through, or feel we’ve had enough time.” (That’s so dower, I’m sorry.)
42. A song that never fails to make me happy:
Again, I have a few, but one that comes right to my mind is “The Hell Song” by Sum 41.  Which seems like an odd choice, I’m sure, as it’s not really a happy song.  But it’s got a bouncy beat and it reminds me of happy times and ugh, the music is just so good, I am sucker for Sum 41′s guitarist’s jams.  (Yes, I was devastated when they parted ways and yes, I was ecstatic when I heard that they’d all come together again.)
my top 5 mac ‘n’ cheese movies
what is a ‘mac ‘n’ cheese’ movie, you might be wondering?
these are the movies that always make you feel good. they don’t need to necessarily be “feel good” films. not all of mine are. these are the movies that you could always put on your Netflix at home (granted it’s on there), always put in the DVD (if you even have any) player, or always leave on while you’re channel surfing (if that’s even a thing you do these days). these are the movies that are “comforting” background noise or movies you never get sick of, no matter how many times you’ve seen them. these are the movies that, if you live alone, will make you feel like you have friends with you. these are the movies that, if you’re feeling alone, will bring solace to your loneliness.
these do NOT have to be:
award-worthy
“good” films
from any specific genre or decade
popular
simply, these are the films that somehow, your spirit is comforted by their essence. maybe through memory, or sound, or childhood… it doesn’t matter. just having these on in the background is soothing to my soul. we can pay attention, or not. we can be cleaning, doing the dishes, working, etc. and it just FEELS GOOD to have them on in the background.
the following movies are my film mac ‘n’ cheese, in no special order.
Clueless (1995)
“Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie.”
i said no special order, but of course, i’m going to put Clueless, the beloved classic, first.
Clueless has always been my go-to “favorite” movie. not to age myself or anything, but yes, even before it was “cool.” i’m a ‘90s kid, and my first memories of this movie are watching it at my aunt’s house when she’d babysit me when my dad worked weekends. i was actually 5-6 years old when it came out, so it was ingrained in me very young, for better or worse.
speaking of better or worse, i know that everyone now loves to bring up the weird fact that *spoiler alert* Cher ends up with her ex-step-brother, Josh… but i didn’t say these mac ‘n’ cheese movies had to be perfect. so even though now i watch with a tiny tinge of ‘ew?’ in my brain, i allow timeless Paul-Rudd-dreaminess to wash away all of the potential ickiness that somewhat does not make sense.
and please note that i am not excusing step-cest because the general thought of that is very, very ew and evokes quite a visceral response from my entire being.
(did you like how i said that last sentence in my best Cher voice?)
also speaking of better or worse, because i also grew up thinking that i would find the love of my life by not realizing i loved them at all or pretending i didn’t know i loved them at all until ONE DAY i would be standing by a fountain after a therapeutic shopping spree like, ‘WAIT… I LOVE THEM. AND THEY LOVE ME TOO?!’ be careful what you wish for, kids. it can happen… and not always how you want it to.
regardless of all this negative-sounding analysis, i have always loved this movie and i’m certain i always will.
Scream (1996)
“my parents are gonna be so mad at me!”
my favorite part about this choice is that my friend deemed it a “hot take,” and i will die on that hill if i have to.
Scream is one of my favorite horror films. firstly, this movie is not typical horror. sure, it’s horrific at times… mostly in the opening scene, whereafter it becomes more of a (highly witty) teen comedy with (a lot of) murder. i think while true horror fans can appreciate the merits of Scream, what it did for the genre, and Wes Craven’s meta expertise, and also agree that it’s “not scary.”
if someone could have The Exorcist, or, for a more modern reference, Hereditary and just have it on any time, i’m not sure i could subscribe to that. but Scream is (thankfully) not either of those movies. it’s horror lite for ‘90s kids like me who, at times, revel in their teen ‘90s nostalgia. although, i have to say, i have seen someone recoil just at the mention of such a mild horror film. and i thought i was a weakling in horror. however, now that i’ve seen Hereditary (AND SURVIVED!), i feel like i can handle most things, though i am fairly certain i will not test those waters.
not to mention:
Dirty Dancing (1987)
“You Just Put Your Pickle On Everybody's Plate, College Boy, And Leave The Hard Stuff To Me.”
A CLASSIC! i’ll save most of my opinions for another piece i’m writing, but here’s the take: this movie is classic, heartfelt, funny, meaningful, political in mostly the right places (it doesn’t focus on everything), and babealicious in all the right places (Patrick Swayze, Cynthia Rhodes who plays Penny, Jennifer Garner, hello––a triad we’d all love to see if the movie had gone THAT progressive––but then it never would’ve been made. it already had a hard enough time, let’s not get carried away).
so far you can probably sense the ongoing theme in my choices: the air of nostalgia. film geeks and those who just heard Stan’s spiel on VHS in I Am Not Okay With This on Netflix will understand. while i’m not watching these movies on VHS, there is something about the feeling of these films. and i’d argue that everyone has favorite movies that pertain to their tastes and interests that fall under this physical sensation of 20th-century film. i’m not nostalgic for the time itself, i don’t need to relive the decades (don’t we daily? in our pop culture, in our fashion, everything)… it’s just that these films are comforting for very personal reasons that have nothing to do with the rest of the world. which is why your mac ‘n’ cheese list will look very differently from mine. it’s kind of unexplainable.
in 8th grade, i watched this movie every day after school because my friend just had to. she was obsessed. years later, we feel the same about this movie. it has this summery vibe to it. i guess there’s something about summer, and something about fall that both tug at my sensibilities in film and literature… the way they’re shown or described. it can be kinda magical. Dirty Dancing does this for me. this scene brings me to tears often.
Moana (2017)
“There is nowhere you could go that I won't be with you.”
stepping out of nostalgia (it’s a relief, honestly), we have my favorite Disney cartoon of the twenty-teens. Coco is up there, but Moana is something else (for me). one day i will also write more in detail about the beauty of this film and what it means to me, but maybe that’s not for me to write.
Moana is about a young woman who is set to become the next chief of her Hawaiian island. but as she grapples with that path for her life, a crisis descends. Moana ends up having to save her family’s island (and the world, essentially, because this curse/disease would spread far beyond their home) from destruction because of the demigod, Maui, who robbed the heart, a glowing lime stone, from Goddes Te Fiti, who kept life flourishing and abundant. it can easily function as an allegory for global warming as well as some other things i may get into another time… but it is so much more than that. it makes me cry nearly every time i watch. i deeply resonate with Moana needing to carve out a way for herself that her family (specifically, her father) might not agree with, but she has to do anyway for her ancestors and her own spirit.
between her sweet and sentimental relationship with her grandmother, the call of her ancestors, and the courageous anthem, “How Far I’ll Go,” that she sings throughout the film––it is not only beyond precious and meaningful, an homage to the feminine, but also doused with humor throughout. i literally feel my heart swell when i watch this and it’s a movie of self-care for my inner child. i can’t fully explain the connection i feel to this film but i know that i very much wish i had this film when i was an actual child! and i can’t wait to show it to my future children. especially my daughter(s).
and last but not least…
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
“What is it with this chick, she have beer flavored nipples?”
it was SO HARD for me to choose one 5th film. i mulled about it for weeks. but this one is a classic i could never tire of. it was the perfect movie to tie up the ‘90s.
10 Things, ah yes, the story of two sisters on their high school dating (or not) journeys. this movie is hilarious and very cleverly derived and adapted from a Shakespeare story: The Taming of the Shrew (which they reference in the film, and i love that they do because i’m a reference nerd), while, fun fact (i’m also a fun fact nerd, i’ve recently discovered)!: Clueless was derived from Jane Austen’s, Emma.
besides Julia Stiles as Kat being a powerful and perhaps overly-feminist voice of her generation (hey, it really worked for the ‘90s) and Andrew Keegan who plays Joey “eat me” Donner mocking a large chunk of his, we also have Joseph Gordon Levitt as the lovable boy next door, Heath Ledger as the bad boy, Patrick Verona which, sidebar: isn’t that name totally sexy? (who’s character is surprisingly funny under his straight-faced guise), and the character i think is potentially the funniest AND most overlooked: David Krumholtz as Michael. but David K. tends to get overlooked a lot, doesn’t he? unless you want to throw Larry Miller as funniest character competition playing Kat and Bianca’s dad, because he is also perfectly on point with the dad jokes and over-the-top push for celibacy, which really does carry the plot of this film. not to mention their English teacher, who is hilarious and real.
this movie is back-to-back laughs to me. it can be subtle and it can be direct. it’s just all around well done. if you haven’t seen it, i highly recommend. between the cast, the writing, the soundtrack even… it’s a beloved comedy classic. its humor outlasts its decade (despite some stuff that probably wouldn’t make the script nowadays) and its heartwarming moments carry it through to being a genuine film. while this film doesn’t garner the attention of some other ‘90s teen comedies, like Can’t Hardly Wait, or She’s All That, i do believe it is more deserving.
besides, they gave us THIS EVERGREEN GIFT?!
Honorable Mentions (or where i expose my johnny depp obsession that has only mostly subsided):
Valley Girl (1983) - another one that i love so dearly in my heart… look out for another article about this one!
Blow (2001)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) – it’s an understatement to say i was obsessed with this film when it came out.
Black Snake Moan (2006)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Ed Wood (1994) – if you haven’t seen this movie and want to see Tim Burton with genuine talent, watch. Johnny Depp should’ve been nominated for an Oscar, or at least a Golden Globe, for his portrayal of the disgraced movie director, Ed Wood.
Or any very old Disney cartoon: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Rescuers, Jungle Book, Robin Hood - for some examples.
tell me, Soulbabes… what are YOUR mac ‘n’ cheese movies?
CLUELESS RETURNS IN AN ALL-NEW COMIC BOOK FROM BOOM! STUDIOS
The Next Adventure of Cher and Her Friends Debuts in Summer 2017
BOOM! Studios is proud to announce CLUELESS is back, in an all-new comic book follow-up to the hit film inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd, and Brittany Murphy, the 1995 Paramount Pictures’ film defined a generation. This August, the writing duo of actress, filmmaker, and author Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Witches of Echo Park, Death’s Daughter) and author Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex, Barbie), along with artist Siobhan Keenan (Adventure Time), reunite your favorite girls from Beverly Hills for a story continuing one of Entertainment Weekly’s “new classics” of film.
It’s senior year at Bronson Alcott High School, and Cher, Dionne, and Tai find themselves in a bit of an existential crisis: Where are they meant to go, and what are they meant to DO after high school? Luckily they have all year—and each other’s help—to figure it out!
“I was 17 when I auditioned for Clueless and, sadly, didn’t get a part,” recalls Benson. “But I remember reading the script—tentatively titled As If—and thinking: If they do this right, they are going to kick some serious butt. So I wasn’t shocked when Clueless turned out to be a pop-culture phenomenon. All these years later, I am tickled that I finally get to be a part of its continuing legacy, and that I get to collaborate with two people I respect greatly: my co-writer Sarah Kuhn and our editor Shannon Watters.”
“Clueless is one of my favorite movies of all time—I love [director] Amy Heckerling’s whip-smart use of language, her clever take on Austen, and the strong bonds she created between vibrant, awesome female characters,” added Kuhn. “And I love that Cher Horowitz is a heroine who takes on every obstacle she faces with a unique combination of ingenuity, positivity, and the ability to pull off yellow tartan like nobody else. Getting to write these characters is both a total dream come true and an incredible challenge and I hope we’re doing Cher, Dionne, and Tai justice—we’re certainly having a ton of fun.”
Clueless is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed BOOM! Box imprint, home to popular original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooke A. Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Backstagers by James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh; SLAM! by Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.
“Clueless is one of the sunniest, kindest, and smartest films out there, and one of my favorites,” says Shannon Watters, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “I’m so excited that we’ll be telling new stories within this world at BOOM! Box.”
Clueless features a cover illustrated by Natacha Bustos (Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy).
