a number of posts have gone somewhat viral on here and probably other sites about the relationship between natives, particularly the choctaw, and the irish, which is very cool to see. but I think one underrated aspect of this and why it's so special that a lot of people might not realize is that it's one of the few examples of foreign policy between a tribal nation and a nation other than the united states. we're supposed to be sovereign nations in our own right, but interaction with other nations besides the US is practically nonexistent. that's something I would like to see change, personally

#it feels pertinent to mention on that note that an irish lacrosse team bowed out of the world lacrosse championship #because the tournament's organizers refused to acknowledge a native team and wouldn't allow them to play #claiming they didn't represent a sovereign nation #which serves as a good example of how if sovereignty is barely recognized in the US that outside of it you can pretty much forget about it

Apparently the speech and debate league I was deeply involved with in highschool is featured in Shiny Happy People and no one except my mother thought this was worth mentioning!!!

#my mom pointed out - rightfully so - that she wasn't allowed to pray at our 'mainstream' / 'liberal' (depending on your paradigm) church #but she was at the NCFCA tournaments she ran #and I was like .... yeah but really I did think they'd get you for that one. after some things men had said to me. I did think they'd make #you pay for that one #there was a lot of intellectual freedom as long as you learned how to spin / be strategic when you had deeply conservative judges #my partner and I went 1-5 at nationals one year because we thought 'end extraordinary rendition' was a no-fail case. #I remember when I set up a line of questioning in cross examination - where you're ALWAYS supposed to know the answers to your questions so #you can back your opponent into a corner / get admissions you need #- where I started confidently with 'so #can we both agree that torture is always morally wrong?' #and he was like 'no actually I think it's ok and we only have to be 60% confident we have the right person' #and it was all I could do to pick my jaw up off the floor #ANYWAY #adventures in the young political conservative army! they were formative! I wouldn't give my NCFCA career up for the world but #oooooof #tam.txt
