Alex was standing in front of a mirror, putting the finishing touches on her make-up before getting ready for her date with Nik. She stopped as she heard someone with keys, so she followed the sound and entered the hallway. There, Nik just entered his apartment.
"Hey, Nik, you're back! How do I look?", she asked and welcomed him with a gentle hug.
Nik, on the other hand was in deep thoughts, looked away and didn't even return the hug which made Alex worry as she realized. It's been a year now since the two of them were living together as a couple. They know each other very well. Something is disturbing him, she's definitely sure. Carefully Alex released him from the hug and took a few steps backwards to analyze him. Clenched jaw, staring at the floor, knitted eyebrows, a balled fist,... Yes, his body language revealed it all.
"Hey, Nik, everything alright?"
"Hmm, yeah.", he answered without meeting her chocolate-brown eyes.
"You sure, Nik?"
"Hmm?", he finally looked at her.
"How was the meeting?"
"I'm glad you didn't cause you would've gotten blood all over yourself and we have dinner reservations at 7."
"Oh that... Believe me, I wanted to stab everyone. I wanted to stab them all!!", he angrily replied.
"I love you for supporting me."
"I love you too, Nik.", she giggled which made Nik smile a little. He took a closer look at her.
"Hey, you look beautiful tonight."
"Thanks, Nik. You should get ready too, you know? I can't have a dinner date without my main course which is you, Nik.", she winked at him.
"Someone's in a good mood here."
Raising her eyebrow, Alex moved closer to him and rested her arms on his chest while Nik pulled her even closer. Both looking deeply at eachother's eyes.
"Well, someone has to keep the good mood up when the other one had a bad day.", she answered in a seducive tone and smiled.
"And I like that, rookie. Hey, how about we cancel our dinner reservations and hang out tonight in the bedroom?"
Alex playfully pushed herself away from Nik and turned disappointedly away from him which made Nik wonder.
"Definitely not, Nik. We're going out tonight. I mean when was the last time we went out together on a date? Hmm?", she argued.
"Okay, okay, sorry. I was just enjoying this little moment here."
"Whatever, now hurry and get ready for our date. I'll give you five minutes to get ready. Don't take long.", she commanded which made him chuckle because she's definitly the one who takes longer to get ready than he.
Like she said, Nik entered the bedroom to change clothes without closing the door, hoping Alex would change her mind and spend the night with him in their bedroom. But it didn't happened. After a few minutes, the man entered the hallway where she was waiting for him. But Nik noticed that she was drown in deep thoughts.
"Hey, what's up? Penny for your thoughts?"
"Nothing, actually. It's just you looked so stressed before you entered the apartment, so I hope the date will let you unwind a little. I don't like when you're stressed. Or should we cancel...?"
"No, I'm fine. It's okay. Don't cancel the date, you already dressed up and were so excited for it. I don't want our night to be ruined because of that stupid meeting I had."
"And aren't you excited for our date as much as I am?"
"Of course I am. Spending some time with my beloved rookie is exactly what I need. I need you. Forever. I need you forever. Only you, Alex. I love you. You're my everything.", he leaned closer and both drifted into a passionate kiss. A few seconds later, they parted to look into eachother's eyes.
"And you should know that I love you too Nik. By the way you look great in this black suit." She smiles shyly. Which made his heart beat stronger. For him Alex is such a beautiful person, from the outside and on the inside.
"Hey, Nik, before we enjoy tonight... Care to share what happened before?", she asked him, but he was silent. No answer came out of his mouth. The sadness in his gray eyes told her everything, so she decided to ask him again. Alex wanted to know what bothered her boyfriend.
"Nik, how was the meeting? Is everything alright? You don't have to tell me, you know? It's just..."
"It's okay, I don't mind sharing with you. But you wouldn't like it. It's just... the vampires from New York. I went to Ivy's, so she could connect me with their clan leaders via video call. I'm worried cuz things don't look good there. Soon, the vampires might have a war and... and... Katherine and I might have to join the war too."
"What?!! Why??!! What do nighthunters have to do with vampires? And New York,... that's where Kristin lives too!!! Why didn't you told me before?!! Nik, tell me everything now!", Alex panicked, took a few steps backwards as tears welled up. Gently, Nik cupped her face and leaned into a soft hug to calm her down.
"Hey, hey, relax, calm down! We don't even know for sure if the vampires will have war, okay. Relax, everything will be fine. It's just a theory. Wanna head out now?", he tried to make her feel better and to skip the topic, but Alex noticed.
Even Nik couldn't hide his true feelings, he felt uncomfortable, stressed and scared of what would happen next. Yes, Nik Ryder and scared, because joining a supernatural war is a huge thing where everyone would be concerned. In an unknown place surrounded by unknown dangers and dangerous creatures, away from home, family and friends. For Nik, away from his true love, his rookie, his Alex.
"Nik, we're not going anywhere tonight until you don't tell me everything.", she lightly pushed him away and glared at him.
"Alex, no need to..."
"Nik!!!"
"Well, I... Okay, fine. As a nighthunter, my job is to protect the human world and supernatural world, bring them both into order and serve justice, so that's why Katherine and I have to be there when the vampires will have war, to protect the humans and the innocent ones. And about the video call I just had, I actually called that damn clan leader to complain about their system cuz the NOLA vampires are drivin' me nuts. It's been a few days now and they're committing crimes and murder in our city. The numbers are increasing every week and someone has to do something. But guess what, the vamps from NY are too busy to care of what happens here, because they have their own problems to deal with.", he disappointedly explained to her.
"Wait...Wait, let me get this straight. Soooooo, when you entered the apartment you had an online meeting via video call at Ivy's place and were talking about stabbing a vampire? Huh, mentioning to stab someone during a video call who's not even here in New Orleans?", she asked. He scratched the back of his head and nodded.
Without getting ready for it, Alex crashed into Nik for a hug. He wrapped his arms around her, rested his head lightly on hers and pulled her closer. Her body shaking while silently crying.
"I'm sorry, rook. I'm sorry for ruining our date tonight."
"Nik... Oh, Nik! Why? Can't you decline? We're talking about war, not even any war, a supernatural war. Please, don't... Don't leave me."
"Hey, it's not even decided about if I as a nighthunter have to go. Okay, relax. Maybe I don't have to.", he gave her and himself hope. Everyone knows that he's one of the best nighthunters, so it could be more likely that the best ones will be chosen for this big event, but he doesn't want to think about it or sadden Alex even more.
"Can't... can't you... can't you reject?"
"I have sworn an oath to protect anyone who needs help. The humans will need safety if the vampires try to harm them. Look, the good thing is that most of the vampire clan leaders are on our side and are against war. Everything will be fine. Alex, please, stop crying. It won't change anything if you spill your tears for me."
"Of course, I will spill every tear for you because I love you and I can't live without you. Try to understand, I just can't!!!!", she screamed at the top of her lungs and felt the salty taste of her tears streaming in her mouth as they were endless waterfalls. When she pulled herself away from him, Nik was longing for her.
"No, no, stop... Please stop, I... I don't want this either, but I have no choice. I don't want to think about this right now, please. Please, let us unwind. Only you and me, together. I...", he quickly pulled her closer and his crashed his lips on hers. They kissed each other with pleasure, passion and full of desire. Not wanting anything to come in between. They were afraid to part ways, to lose each other. They were always one. Always.
While kissing both tiptoe around to the other side into the bedroom. Completly lost into the sensation, Nik's hands on her body, his lips now on throat while she lays her hands on his chest which slowly moving lower and lower.
"Are you sure, Alex? Don't let your sadness control you."
"Oh Nik, I love you and all I need is you. Only you. I need you now, Nik."
"Damn, I love you too. You're my queen, my life, my everything and there's no life without you... I can't live without you, I will die.", he confessed and crystalline tears finally filled his eyes too.
"Don't you dare to die, understood? If you die, I will die with you. So promise me, that you won't die, my soldier."
"I promise, I swear on... The hell with that. I swear on us, rook."
"What? On us? Why swear on us?"
"Yeah, I swear on us. Because there isn't anything I believe in more than us and our true love. You and me, forever. Nothing will seperate us, my love."
To be continued...

Where I Belong
Well, my first Nik Ryder fic in what… two years? And it is naughty sorry not sorry. Anywho, this is basically a rewrite of the 30 diamond scene in Chapter 11. When Nik and MC go to the tower overlooking Lamrian. I always felt like we got ripped off with that scene, so I wrote it the way I think it should’ve gone.
Perma tags: @drstrange46ers

Gazing out upon her new home, her otherworldly home, she feels a strange tugging of contentment. In her heart, she feels at peace here. Whether that is just because she has found her true father, or because of that and Nik.
His strong shoulder bumps hers softly and she sighs out a gentle smile towards him. He covers her hand with his, a relaxed stance overtook his body after he admitted his feelings towards her.
Now the tension between them has lessened for tonight. The bloodwraith is being kept at bay by the ward and the privacy of this tower offers views of Lexie’s new hometown she can relish.
She slips an arm around Nik’s waist, he stiffens for a second and then relaxes. His own arm wraps around her shoulder while he rests his head on top of hers.
“I feel like this has been what’s missing my entire life. I feel like I’ve finally found where I belong.”
A bell rings in the distance. The loud chime rings out over the town, interrupting Lexie.
“We’ll, I’m glad you’ve found it, Rook.” He steps away from her, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. You know I ain’t good with talking about stuff.”
She let her hair down out of its normal braid when she was getting ready for bed so when a breeze blows through the open window of the tower, she wrangles it back behind her ear. Then her blue eyes look up at him, earnest and open.
“It’s not okay, but I’ve forgiven you because you were doing what you thought was best for me.”
Nik nods, gazing down at her with a crooked smile and runs a hand through his hair. Lexie steps up to him and rests her arms on his shoulders, interlocking her hands behind his neck.
“But, I think you could make me feel even better.”
Slowly, she inches her mouth towards his, but as soon as she closes her eyes, he takes over. His mouth meets her in fervent kisses, a hand tangles in her hair and he pushes her back against the wall.
He’s been forcing himself not to give into his desires, but hell, there’s no way he can deny her tonight.
Both sets of hands fumble with the clothes that separate them from what they desire. Nik strips off his pants and his shirt by the time she got her shirt off. Lex hurriedly pushes her pants off, kicking them towards the stairs and then pulls his taut body back against hers. He resumes his deep kisses, losing his tongue with hers, and unclasps her bra, allowing it to fall off.
He leans back, raking his dark, lust filled eyes over her body while he slowly pulls her underwear down. His breath hitches at the sight and he looks back up, being caught by Lexie‘s cocky grin.
“Like what you see there, cupcake?” She tugs on the waistband of his boxers for emphasis, giggling softly.
Nik rolls his eyes good-naturedly, pushing his boxers down in one fell swoop. Her giggles disappear and her eyes train in on his hard manhood.
Smirking in success, he presses his body against hers once more. “I think you like what you see more, cupcake.”
His hands reach under her thighs and pick her up easily, pressing into her, earning moans from both of them. His cock slides in deftly and his eyelids droop from the feeling of her tight walls surrounding him.
“Oh, Nik.” Lexie’s arms wrap around his neck while she kisses him slowly, lovingly, and begins to rock her hips.
A deep groan escapes his lips. His fingers dig into the skin of her thighs and he begins to move his hips in quick, hard thrusts. She begins to let out cries, feeling him so deep inside her. Her hand sticks in his hair, tugging at the brown locks while she feels herself getting closer and closer to her release. Lexie feels the hard stone wall pressing into her skin, the slight pain mixing with the pleasure coming from Nik.
His eyes open and settle on her exquisite face. They trail from her closed eyes, down to her nose, to her lips, past the scar on her jar and settle back on her lidded eyes.
“Look at me, Lex.”
Startled by the brisk tone in his voice, she opens her eyes, meeting his and seeing the dark desire clouding his pupils. Both of them smile, but when Nik begins pounding into her harder, she lets out a loud cry. Overwhelmed by the pure pleasure coursing through her, her eyes begin to slide shut.
“Oh… oh, right there. Yes!” She almost begins screaming, “So close, Nik.”
Her eyes roll back, her fingers dig into his hair, tugging and pulling, but he doesn’t relent. His thrusts are hard, focused and pushing her to her brink.
“Lex, I want you to look at me, sweetheart.”
Her eyes snap open, begging and pleading with him. “Nik, please!”
His thighs burn and he feels the familiar tightness rising up in his core. “Look at me and come for me, baby.”
Lexie keeps her eyes locked on his while her cries ring out in the tower, joining the sounds of their skin meeting roughly and the moans of pleasure.
“Oh fu—“
Then her body clamps around him, her fingers dig into his scalp, and her eyes shut tightly. It pushes his body over the edge with her and he spills his warm seed into her. His hips jerk, he moans erratically and he holds her legs tightly while they both come down from their high.
Their foreheads meet and they look at each other with a satisfied glow, both smiling gently. Her breaths mix with his, their skin melds together with sweat and her legs tremble around his waist.
“That was way better than I imagined.” His deep, gruff voice is quiet, just above a whisper.
“Much better.”
Lexie kisses the tip of his nose before he sets her on the ground. They both gather their clothes, redressing quickly and she takes one more look over her new home.
“Tonight was the best night I’ve had in a long time.” She looks over at Nik, his fingers buttoning up the last bit of his shirt and she smiles, “Thank you for everything. For bringing me here and for tonight.”
A dark blush creeps up her cheeks and he gives her his lopsided grin.
“You’re welcome. Thank you too. You’ve uh…” he pauses and rubs the back of his neck, “You’ve taught me a lot.”
Grabbing his hand, Lexie reaches up and kisses his cheek before dragging him towards the stairs.
“Let’s go get some sleep, Ryder.”

As always, tags in the reblog!
"I've been searching everywhere about this and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. It is a really rare condition." Ivy pulled a huge antique black book up, setting it on the table, opening a marked page. "Apparently, when Alex was attacked and Amy turned, their full powers were activated."
"And that put us in this freaky Friday situation?" Amy asked.
"Seems like it. Your energies were so strong that, when they were liberated into the world, somehow collided and mixed up resulting in the body exchange."
"Yeah yeah, all this is very interesting Ivy but we need a solution."
"Nik! Don't be an asshole!" He blinked. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't get used to Alex's words coming from Amy's body.
"Well, I've only found one possible solution." Ivy seemed a bit uncomfortable, keeping her red eyes glued to the page in front of her. "And I'm not even sure if it's going to work."
"Spill it, Ivy."
"They have to die again at the same time."
"Absolutely not!" Adrian stood, hitting the table with his palms, livid. "Amy's body is a vampire, if she dies, her body will turn into ash. There's no return from that."
"I agree with the bloodsucker." Nik added. "It is too risky."
"Call me that again and you'll see how much of a bloodsucker I can be." Amy noticed the irritated tone in Adrian's voice.
"I would like to see you try it." Nik responded, smugly.
"Is that so?" Adrian's eyes turned crimson as his fangs appeared above his bottom lip.
"Adrian!" Amy called him, softly holding his hand. Instead of relaxing, like he always does with her touch, he tensed up for a moment. After all, it wasn't really her skin that was brushing his.
"I need a moment." He said as he walked out of the conference room door. "If you’ll excuse me." And he disappeared from their sight. Amy sadly stood too, following him.
"I'm going to go talk to him."
"Take your time." Alex said and Amy nodded.
"Adrian." She found him in the lobby, pacing around, anger and frustration twisting his handsome features. "Just ignore him."
"It's not him that troubles me, Amy." He took off his blazer, throwing it somewhere.
"No?"
"Of course not!" He loosened his tie just a bit, looking annoyed and clearly stressed. "It's that damn idea! The risk that entails it is too great!"
"I'm going to do it." Adrian froze and Amy sat on one of the couches, anxiously biting her bottom lip.
"Amy…"
"If Alex agrees, I want to try it." Unconsciously, she looked down at her hands, noticing, once more, that they weren't her own. Instead, she fixed her stare on Adrian's back.
"It's a terrible idea, Amy. You could die."
"I know. But keeping this up isn't an option."
"It is an option. And an excellent alternative if you avoid death." Amy stood and walked in front of him.
"Look at me." She cupped both sides of his face, forcing his gaze at her. "This isn't me, Adrian and you know it. I feel shallow and incomplete. I can't even look at my reflection." She sadly smiled at him. "Since I came back, you haven't been able to kiss me, not once."
"It's not that I don't want to, it's just…" He hesitated.
"It feels wrong, I know. I’m not blaming you." Amy avoided his eyes, self-consciously. "But I miss it. I miss being a bloodkeeper, being with you, my job, my own face, my body." She blinked fast. "I miss the way you used to look at me. So much it hurts." Adrian pulled her into a comforting hug. "I want to experience being a vampire with you and our friends." She sniffed against his shoulder. "I miss me and my life. That's what makes the risk worth it."
"Okay." Adrian closed his eyes, threading his finger through that hair that felt so different from hers. "If that's your decision, then it's okay. I'll be there for you."
"Thank you." She whispers, her voice cracking.
***
"You didn't call me."
"What?" Alex turned to watch Nik's serious profile.
"When you woke up here, you didn't call me." His tone was indifferent but something similar to hurt resounded behind his words.
"I wasn't sure you would believe me. And…" She noticed that Ivy wasn't on the screen, only the open book was on camera, probably to give them privacy and would return in a moment. "Everything that happened before Thomas' attack was too fresh. Still is."
"Alex, I–"
"No. I said not today." She interrupted him. "You already said what you want. In-depth at that." Alex's voice hardened, getting upset. "I can't nor want to handle that talk right now."
"Okay." Nik crossed his arms over his chest. He stood, walking over to the window that overlooked the lobby, watching Alex hugging Raines. He shook his head. Amy was hugging the bloodsucker, not Alex. Either way, the jealousy he felt was way too strong for his liking. "But at some point, we will need to talk about it." She let out an ironic little chuckle.
"You are not going to decide that." Alex stood too, peeking through the same window. She took a second to observe the scene downstairs. Even though it was strange, to say the least, seeing herself having that intimacy with Adrian, she barely knew the guy, but she was happy for them. Adrian and the others had been very kind to her the past few weeks. "Did you notice it? That something was different?"
"Obviously. But I just thought you were pissed off at me."
She smirked despite herself. "I am pissed off at you." Alex watched how Amy and Adrian separated from each other. How his hand cupped her cheek and she covered it with hers, kissing his palm. How close they seemed. And how much she wanted to feel that way. Her gesture was more serious as her mind remembered the night of Mardi Gras. "You really hurt me."
"I know. I–" Before Nik could say anything else, the door opened and Adrian and Amy walked through it.
"My apologies, are we interrupting something?"
"Nothing that can't wait." Alex went closer to the screen. "Ivy, are you there?"
"Coming!" One second later, she sat in front of the pc.
"Are you certain that that's the only possible solution?" Adrian questioned her, standing by Amy.
"As far as I know."
"But it's impossible." Nik crossed his arm, leaning against the window behind him. "They can't actually die."
"But if we make it seem like they did?" Ivy said, going through another book.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, there's a drug that will stop their vital signs, simulating that they are dead. Maybe that's enough to trigger the change." She read a page while talking. "It is still risky because it can actually kill them but a bit safer than wounding them."
Amy looked at Alex. "I'm up to try it if you are."
"Me too. Where can we find this drug, Ivy?"
"It's more like a potion. You need to make it."
"Can you prepare it in your lab?" Amy questioned Adrian and he nodded.
"Yes, I rebuilt them." Ivy's curiosity perked up, looking excited at him.
"You have a lab? Like a vampire lab? You have to let me see it! I–" Adrian smiled at her enthusiasm before Nik interrupted her.
"Ivy. The potion."
"Yeah, right." She clicked on the pc. "I'm sending you the receipt now." Nik opened it on the screen.
"Mh." Adrian read the recipe attentively. "It's complex, no doubt, but possible. I can have it done probably in one or two days." "So, it's decided," Amy said with the same determination that Adrian had seen before she stabbed Gaius. "As soon as Adrian finishes the potion, we will test the theory."

Bound by Destiny II, part 1 ― Chapter 32: The Circumstances (Epilogue)
PAIRING: Kamilah Sayeed x MC (Nadya Al Jamil) RATING: Mature
⥼ MASTERLIST ⥽
⥼ Bound by Destiny II, part 1 ⥽
While struggling with nightmares of lives she’s never lived, a shadow from the past looming over her city, and the proposed idea that her life may just be a little bit too weird to handle alone, Nadya makes sure to tell herself that everything is perfect just the way it is. If only. When the self-proclaimed King of Vampires (and Maker of her sometimes-girlfriend and always-boss, can’t forget that little tidbit) Gaius Augustine returns intent on claiming Manhattan as the throne that was promised, she and her friends find themselves forced into the task of saving the world. But with millennia-old vampires and an Order of hunters on their heels as well as allies hiding catastrophic secrets at their backs… it won’t be an easy task. Too bad destiny didn’t exactly ask for her input.
Bound by Destiny II and the rest of the Oblivion Bound series is an ongoing dramatic retelling project of the Bloodbound series and spin-off, Nightbound. Find out more [HERE].
TAG LIST: @googlesentmehere, @cess02, @hellyeah90sbaby,
*Let me know if you would like to be added to the Destiny II tag list!
⥼ Chapter Summary ⥽
The winds of change blow down the eastern seaboard all the way to New Orleans. While on date night, Taylor and Ryder join Katherine in finding out just how bad things are for their friends abroad.
[READ IT ON AO3]
Tumblr media
Several days earlier...
By the time Taylor takes his fourth lap around the perimeter of their floor, Ryder decides enough is enough. Reaching out to catch his wrist before he can get too far — he pulls the halfling back into the booth and practically on top of his lap. It’s about the only place he doesn’t get any resistance these days.
Not-spoken too soon. Immediately the hunter has his arms full of squirming anxiety with blond hair and, upon closer inspection, a few scraps of skin missing from his bottom lip. Worn away by teeth picking relentlessly.
“Not right now, Nik,” mumbles Taylor restlessly, “I’ve just — I’ve gotta move. Too much energy, you know?”
“Oh, I know. You’ve been doin’ laps in bed all week.”
Taylor’s nose crinkles at that. Not because he feels bad about it or anything, but he knows how little sleep Nik gets as it is and the thought of being yet another thing keeping him awake just drops a cherry on top of his worries.
“… Sorry.”
For both their sakes it’s shrugged off; forgotten. For a lot more than that, too. They can’t afford to get into any argument tonight, no matter how fickle.
“I would’a thought a world-class actor like yourself would be better at playin’ it cool.”
Taylor blinks in surprise. It’s enough to still him for the moment. “I’m totally playing it cool.”
“Sure — and I’m a pixie.” Ryder jerks his chin up and out, motioning for Taylor to give a (subtle) look at the booths around them. Most notably how his constant round-and-round-and-round has them on edge too; shifting weights and too many drinks ordered to quell the jitters even for a crowd as uppity as Persephone’s.
Of course, being Taylor, he’s about as subtle as a freight train, but the point gets got.
“Sorry,” force of habit, “I’m just…”
“Hey, I get it. An’ I know it’s been a bit since you’ve been on a job with me but you’ve got to relax or it’ll all be for nothin’.”
A job; the way he says it so casually. Taylor scoffs.
“This isn’t just any old job Nik — and you know it.”
“Sure I do. But if we don’t treat it like any old payday things tend to go wrong. The pressure…” resting broad, scarred hands on his boyfriend’s trembling shoulders — thumbs pressing deep to try and relieve some of that tension, “will keep ya from makin’ the right calls when and where they need made.”
A few moments of silence and circles of pressure at the young man’s collarbone and eventually—finally—Taylor relaxes. Enough that Ryder can let him sit all on his own, even.
“We’re exactly where we need to be,” the man continues lowly, “nothin’ more we can do but watch and wait.”
But that’s all they’ve been doing; and Taylor has to physically bite his tongue to keep the words from being said. Ryder’s well aware just as Taylor’s well aware and pointing it out doesn’t do either of them any good. If it did then something big would have happened by now.
No word from Cadence. No word from Nadya — or any of them. Just a month of watching the news reports out of New York City getting weirder and more dangerous. A month… and tonight.
Come to Persephone. Just after sunset. Make yourself seen, and whatever you do, under no circumstances are you to approach me. Stay away. For your own good.
I.
Doesn’t exactly take a spy-criminal-mastermind to figure out what has Isadora de la Rosa reaching out for the first time since the Council meeting Cadence had called. Something’s going on, something she can’t say to them in person or via letter or messenger. Something that made her shut down Flechette for ‘temporary renovations’ that definitely weren’t needed at the beginning of the week and kept her from responding to any of the fancy-pants official missives Vera had sent on their behalf under the title of the Smoke.
Ryder reaches for his glass and downs the last dregs of his bourbon with a sigh. “Still think we should’a brought backup.”
“Yeah and I’m still kinda disturbed by that.” It’s not an unreasonable reaction in Taylor’s honest opinion. Since when did Nik Ryder ask for backup?
Since recently, apparently. “I take risks but I know when they’re worth taking. And there’s not a damn thing that could ever be worth takin’ on vampires. Especially ones like Smith was goin’ on about.”
Old, bloodthirsty, powerful and power-craven vampires, to be more specific.
“Ask me nicely and I’ll think about it.”
Together Taylor and Nik whip their heads around so fast they nearly collide — and wouldn’t that have been something. But really, in retrospect, neither man is surprised that the booth behind them is occupied by a familiar cheeky voice.
Katherine slings her arm around the back of her booth, turning to face them with an eyebrow raised and less mirth in her smile than normal; which isn’t saying much. Unlike everyone else around the club (Taylor and Nik excluded; only because they spent their ‘Fancy Party Threads’ budget on more important things this month — like groceries, and Garrus’ rent) she’s kept her leathers on for tonight. Hair tightly woven in a long violet braid kept out of her eyes and with her muddy boots carelessly kicked on top of the shiny chrome table in front of her.
He’s honestly never been so happy to see her in his life.
Well… unless that time… nevermind.
“What,” she glances between them with mild amusement, “don’t tell me you two idiots are surprised. You’re like Tweedledee and Tweedledum without an adult to make sure you don’t burn the place down.”
Ryder groans with the effort of his eye-roll. “You accidentally let one fuckin’ elemental loose on an abandoned warehouse and never hear the end of it.”
“You couldn’t stop a fire elemental on a harbor pi— you know what, no, we’re not doing this right now.”
“You started it!”
“And I’m ending it —” Katherine swings her legs down and stands, cracking her neck side to side, “— especially since you can’t seem to banter and pay attention at the same time.”
They follow the path of her eyes down below, through the iron-wrought ornamental railing to the level below. Between the gambling tables, bar, and dance floor it takes Taylor’s senses a second to adjust and focus on sight over everything else — just one of those not-at-all-cute quirks that came with developing his fae heritage.
Lo and behold — and like she didn’t vanish off the face of the earth for a brief period of time — Isadora de la Rosa crosses the main floor of the club with the same confident stride she does anything. She doesn’t weave in and through the crowd; they part for her because they know it’s their job to. And those who don’t learn. Fast.
Even from this distance he can feel the nervous energy billowing out from her; thick like fog and just as unsettling. It makes Taylor give a full-body shudder. “She’s freaking out,” not that her impassive nonchalance would betray it, but this is Izzy de la Rosa they’re talking about, “like… heart-going-a-mile-a-minute you-know-what-I-mean freaking out.”
Ryder gives his fellow Nighthunter a quick jab with his elbow without looking away. “You get a personal not-invite too?”
“No,” she elbows him back—harder, “but I’ve been keeping tabs on her. Shiny Bentley picked her up outside Flechette about an hour ago… I must’ve beat her here.”
“Not like it’s a long drive.”
“So what’s she been up to for an hour?” asks Taylor, mostly to himself. It earns him two deadpan stares and a flush of shame. Because what else would the city’s most important vampire be doing before a social evening where the club offered everything but blood donors?
“Got it. Carry on.”
Katherine sweeps another look about the floor, focusing on the path Isadora leaves in her wake. “Weird not to see her tailed by… anyone. No guards, not even her daughters.” And her daughters go with her everywhere. That’s just one of those things, you know — facts.
“I’m more interested in who Izzy’s got at her hip, myself.” Ryder comments; and a second look proves him right. It’s hard to catch pairs in the fast-paced movement of dancers, gamblers, drinkers and already-drunks, but she isn’t alone. Whoever keeps up beside her, face obscured from this angle by a wave of dark brown hair, does so easily. A little too easily.
“Can’t get a good look at her…” He trails off. Suddenly, Taylor feels the burning question in his boyfriend’s eyes without fail.
A twitch of his nose — focusing as best he can… but it’s always harder with someone he doesn’t know. Harder still when they aren’t human, or alive for that matter. Finally Taylor exhales, face red from strain while he shakes his head. “I can’t get a read on her.”
Not even when the woman throws back her head in a laugh a little too loud; the kind of laughter that comes from the want—or need—to be seen. To demand it of anyone within earshot. Lilting and sweet and just enough to be heard over the club band.
Her fangs catch in the light of a chandelier overhead. As if they needed confirmation of what she was.
Beside them Katherine’s breath hitches; caught in her throat with an icy grip. Taylor tears away from their target long enough to catch a glimpse, to see if she’s okay, and holy shit she is not okay. “Nik—” She’s white as a sheet, just as fragile too. He can feel her from here, the terror that clings to every bead of sweat on her forehead, then on his own.
Ryder doesn’t even open his mouth before it’s all bottled back up. Kathy’s always been good at that. Even for an empath, Taylor can’t quite understand how she does it. It’s frightening, honestly.
“You know her then.” Ryder isn’t asking. Katherine’s hands tighten on the railing as she nods.
“That’s… fuck…” her shudder cuts her off, makes her start over, “that’s, uh, Priya. Priya Lacroix.”
Wait. “The fashion designer?” Just when Taylor thought he was getting a hang of keeping up with them, too.
“The former member of the Council of New York,” she corrects, “leader of Clan Lacroix.”
Oh. He’s caught up now.
Ryder’s frown deepens. “Didn’t Smith say she was one of the ones who…” He trails off; doesn’t finish the thought — or maybe he can’t.
It’s okay though. They were all there. They know how it would have ended.
The woman Isadora coaxes through a roped-off doorway, a friendly hand resting on her lower back, is in league with the King of Vampires. She sold out Adrian, and Nadya, and Nadya’s girlfriend, and Cadence and all the rest of them; a traitor in the name of power.
Not… the greatest look Isadora’s ever had. But surely there’s a reason… right?
Before the fae attendant can close off access to their private reservation, the woman herself stops and allows herself to take in the opulence of the club for the first time tonight. Not that it looks any different than normal… but everything makes a little more sense when part of her reverent moment includes looking directly up and right at them.
Taylor’s heart catches in his throat. He waits, and watches…
Isadora gives a tiny nod, barely a twitch, before sliding the mask of a smile back in place and joining her guest out of sight.
Like a gunshot Katherine’s up and starting off towards their level’s interior rooms. “Come on,” she snaps at them over her shoulder, “we can cross them if we take the back stairs.”
Taylor and Ryder scramble up to join her. But before he gets too far the hunter doubles back, swallows the rest of his drink in one large gulp, and jogs to catch up.
Tumblr media
The back stairwell is usually restricted to attendants and other staff. Tonight is no different, other than the fact that they have need of it, so restrictions don’t really apply. They approach the locked door and Ryder manages to coax Katherine back, both of them giving the halfling a wide berth to do his work. Sparks at his fingertips, cool to the touch like a glass of water on a hot summer day, iridescent with no-name colors as they fall on the handle and lock. The metal sizzles where they make contact, a thin stream of smoke makes his eyes water.
But he’s been practicing quite a lot recently, and it doesn’t take long before his fae magic overloads any other; cancels it out and allows the door to swing open of its own accord.
“You’re gettin’ better at that,” comments Ryder; and Taylor flushes at the compliment. He takes the lead — always the first to run into danger. Taylor and Kathy keep close behind.
“Lessons with Elric have really been paying off. It’s not all giant black pyres and feeling your horniness before you do.”
“Was that a hint?”
“Surprisingly not this time.”
Beside him Katherine pretends to gag.
It’s a mad rush to the ground level. Hunters stepping back automatically this time, and maybe it’s just Taylor but the second lock doesn’t take nearly as long. He blows the smoke from his index finger like an imaginary blowtorch snuffed out.
Pushing past them both, Kathy pokes her head out first. There’s a stake in her fist that wasn’t there a second ago, aimed and ready, but the tension doesn’t last long before she steps aside. “Now we’re fucked…”
When they join her in the corridor it makes sense. Stretching out from their doorway left and right — it looks almost endless in the dark. He can’t even see the distant lights from the gambling floor. Just another of the illustrious wonders this place is known so well for — and so not the thing they need right now.
“How are we supposed to know where they went?” Taylor looks at each of the closed cherry-wood doors with growing dismay. “We don’t have time for this.”
“No fae magic trick up your sleeve?”
“I don’t have one for everything.”
“You had one for opening the pickle jar.”
Taylor scoffs indignantly. “That—That was a serious issue!”
“Can you two try and take one thing seriously?” snaps Kathy, hissing between clenched teeth. “Lacroix skins her houseboys for fun. This isn’t a dinner date going down.”
Nik really doesn’t like being scolded though.
“Then what is it, All-Knowing Kathy?”
“What the fuck do you think?” When she doesn’t get an answer; “Isadora’s part of the bloodline, don’t you see? Made by Carlo, who was made by someone… I couldn’t find a name in Cade’s research. But Carlo’s Maker was definitely one of the Augustine progeny.”
Butterflies flutter in Taylor’s gut as he thinks over her words. “So… what, Izzy’s on his side because of parents or something?”
Kathy hesitates to answer. Never a good sign. “I don’t know. I don’t — that’s why we need to find out what they’re up to. Now.”
The three of them keep close, in case the hallway is really as magical as it seems, and scour for any sign of… anything. Nik beats them out, pulling them back to him with a whispered “There—” as he points to the only light source around — was that even there before?
Ye olde gas lamp flickers a soft orange glow up ahead. A beacon in the fabricated night. And in front of one door no different than any other door, but for the waves of emotion—cruelty—bitterness—amusement—boredom—hunger—that definitely means they’re in the right place.
The trio hesitates several paces back, using the darkness as a cover while Ryder gives the door a more detailed look-over. “No guards posted,” —odd for a place like this, even Taylor knows that— “but the door doesn’t seem bewitched. If I get us close enough, Taylor, think you could use some of that empathy to hear what’s on the other side?”
If he can’t they’re sorta screwed, so better to try than not. The hunters slip across the hall with practiced stealth and ease; Katherine’s silent steps and Nik’s pretty epic (and definitely show-off-y) barrel roll.
They flank the door and wait—listen—before gesturing at Taylor to join. He just… tip toes over. No parkour needed. Joins Nik on his side and takes a moment to steady his breathing and focus with his eyes closed. They really don’t have a second chance at this.
Slowly the world around him begins to fade. The musty carpeting no longer tickling his nose; unable to taste the dryness of his own mouth. He drowns out three heartbeats all out of sync, the whistle of the air in a vent overhead, the hiss of the lamp above.
“Hey, Rook.”
“I’m kinda focusing.”
“I know. Look at me.”
All the sounds come rushing back like a tidal wave and Taylor opens his eyes a little nauseous for his troubles. He’s glad he did, though. Because for all their banter and mockery and how Ryder refuses to ever ever open a pickle jar for him, there’s just something about the trust, honest and open, that makes the man’s eyes light up from the tiny flame overhead.
“You can do this.”
The sincerity makes his cheeks burn all the way down to his toes. Taylor has to look away for fear of drowning in the combined emotion of them. “Was that ever in doubt?”
“Don’t make me answer that.”
Attempt number two. Closed eyes, heartbeats—whistles—hisses all reduced to something less than white noise. Pushed back until he can force whatever’s left of his senses both inside and out through the door like it’s a sheer curtain instead of solid wood.
Slow, steadily the room comes into view behind his eyelids.
Isadora sets her drink on the arm of her chair. One leg crossed over the other and the liquor in her glass jostles, ice clinking softly, but never spills.
“What your King — and you by association — seem to have a hard time grasping is that down here things are simply done differently. There are rules of decorum. Legalities; traditions of respect that are followed to ensure everyone lives… calmly at the very least.”
“Why would His Majesty give a damn about anyone else’s lives here in this miserable mosquito net of a town?” The woman’s voice pitches with unsung laughter as she speaks. Her fingernails tap-tap-taptaping repetitive on the side table where her martini rests.
To her credit, Isadora remains cool and level-headed.
“As I’m to understand it, all of the traditions carried out by our cousins overseas are of his making, are they not?”
“I guess so. I don’t bother slumming it with those gutter rats. If I’m in Europe, I’m launching a new line.”
“Then your Council, we’ll use that as a perfect example.”
“The Council is gone, Izzy darling. The Clans are disbanded, those idiots hiding in the tunnels have been smoked out. There’s only the King’s Realm, now.”
Every word seems to jab into Isadora like an individual knife. The glass in her hand creaks dangerously as she grips it tighter.
“Bully for him then. My point stands.”
“Oh you poor thing… I don’t think you actually get why I’m here, Lady de la Rosa. Which is sad, really, and totally on you for thinking you could get out of choosing sides.”
The other woman shifts, switches her crossed legs and looks down her nose at Isadora; there’s a first time for everything. “I couldn’t give less of a fuck about the way you want things done. Because that’s not how they’re going to stay.”
Isadora’s eyes flash dangerously. “Then enough of your placations. Why are you here, Priya?”
“That’s Princess to you, hag.”
“Ha, don’t make me laugh.”
“I’m not here with a request. I’m here with a command.”
“This is America, if you’ve forgotten. We don’t take kindly to kings here.”
“No, you don’t,” sneers Priya in reply, “but that’s only because you’ve been waiting for the real one and didn’t even know it. The throne is clear and the butt it was made for is finally seated and ready. His Majesty isn’t totally disgusted with the way you’ve been running things down in the South. You’re lucrative, profitable, and your family name inspires loyalty.”
“A concept you aren’t quite acquainted with, as I’m to understand it.”
Priya grinds her teeth together, lips pursed into a thin line.
“You don’t know shit. But since you think you do… let’s make one thing clear. My loyalty is to power. Whoever’s got the most gets my vote.”
“Kings aren’t voted in.”
“It’s a fucking figure of speech. I’m on the winning team, whatever. The more you pull this shit, the less likely that option becomes for you.”
A smart woman; always in control — Isadora leans forward and sets her glass down on the table before them before she plucks her response out of careful words.
“Continue then.”
Priya “hmmphs,” sounds for a moment like she won’t out of pure spite. But she’s here for one reason, and she won’t risk that careful affair she has with the new power in charge.
“The King is choosing to graciously overlook the fact that you should have already come to his Court to swear fealty to him. He likes your family line, or whatever. But it’s a one-time kindness.
“You, Isadora de la Rosa, are duty-bound by blood to serve Gaius Augustine. He’s the founder of your line — of all our lines actually — and when you took over the family business you took on the family oaths with it. You’ll come back with me, to New York, and take a pretty knee. Everything you do will be in his name, for his benefit, and in return you get to keep your weird little… playpen with the mortals until he decides otherwise.”
Ryder’s hand, heavy and warm against the ice in his veins, drags Taylor out of the room and back with the hunters. The man’s face is etched with worry; his expression grim.
“What’s the matter? What are they saying?”
He doesn’t waste time shushing — just focuses back on the vampires with a lump in his throat.
Isadora raises her chin slightly. “And if I do not agree to the King’s… generous offer?”
“Do I really have to spell it out for you? I thought you were supposed to be smart.”
Don’t do it Izzy. He wants to scream; burst in there with Katherine’s stake and just do the thing. But he’s frozen in place. At the mercy of the undecided future of not just the city’s vampires, but New Orleans herself.
“Well,” Priya snaps with impatience, “what’s it gonna be?”
Isadora closes her eyes.

‘Til Death Do We Part - a Nik Ryder x f!MC (Lux) angsty oneshot
A/N: Seeing as I’m a huge sucker for angst (and we all know PB won’t ever actually kill our MC off) , an idea randomly popped into my head and I decided to run with it :-) this is my first ever Choices drabble so please keep that in mind while reading - sorry if it sucks but, alas, here goes nothing!!!
*this takes place promptly after the Nightbound Chapter 15 cliffhanger, I started writing it before the book ended like a year ago now lol & I wasn’t gonna post it at all but, yanno, why not? Full disclosure, it does suck, I am so out of touch when it comes to writing as I haven’t in so long but, gotta start somewhere right? Anyway, here goes!!*
TW: death of a main character, light swearing
Nik’s POV
“But Nik... I’m in love with you.”
Black. Every which way my eyes turned, all I saw was the absence of light.
“But Nik...”
Lux’s voice sounded through the darkness, soft at first, but gradually began to increase in volume - over and over in that strong, yet gentle, always gentle, lilt of hers -
“NIK, NO!”
My eyes screwed open the moment my body collided with the ground, and they were met with a sight that would beseech them until the end of... forever -
“Oh my god, LUX!”
All I could do was watch helplessly as Thomas tossed her lifeless body aside like some child bored with its old ragdoll. All at once, the air left my body, the commotion around me slowed to a standstill, and as I fought to regain at least a fraction of my footing, rolling onto my knees and ignoring the searing pain flooding my body as my mind was hellbent on one goal and one goal only --
“You sonuva bitch, I’ll kill you!” I don’t remember screaming but apparently I did, I do remember seeing nothing but red -- I came back to my senses as the horrible memory from two weeks ago once again resurfaced, my red, swollen eyes refocusing on the dark amber pool of liquid filled to the brim of the glass. I slowly picked my head up and sweeped my gaze around the atmosphere, momentarily forgetting where I was until I laid eyes on the rest of the group beside me that had dragged me out of an endless wallowing bender of despair. I was met with the burning intensity of worried glances that did little to stop the stampede of nausea in the pit of my stomach and the on-going buzz of a headache at the forefront of my mind. All I could do was offer them a stiff shake of my head, the deathgrip around the glass that sat before me increasing. It took everything in me to not hurl it at the nearest wall, how I mustered up enough sheer willpower, I will never fully grasp. I wordlessly excused myself to the rooftop of the Graveyard Shift, praying that they all knew me well enough to leave me be.
The night air and the otherwise beautiful sight of the city did nothing to steel my nerves, but I persisted anyway, crossing the rooftop in long strides until I made it to the ledge and lowered myself into a sitting position. An uncharacteristically humored chuckle left my lips when I thought about how Lux would flip out if she saw me like this right now -- and that innocent inkling broke the floodgates I’d been so desperately trying to keep nailed shut these past few weeks, my back meeting the cool concrete beneath me as unfocused, unseeing eyes steadied on the stretch of sky above me. Lux.. my breath hitched in my throat as her presence occupied my mind, and I swear if I focused hard enough, I could smell the hint of lilac and honeysuckle she always radiated at all given times. I didn’t dare close my eyes as my final memory of her seemed eternally etched into the back of my eyelids, but now, I could see myself flying with her among the stars, doing everything under the moon to keep her laughing that smooth, sweeter than thaumatin laugh I was robbed of hearing for all of eternity while trying my best to keep up with her.
Damnit, Lux.. Damnit! I sat up with a cry, slamming my fist against my thigh until I lost feeling in both, my entire body processing grief in immense amounts by shaking violently enough to make a severe earthquake look like a small hiccup. It’s not fair. It just isn’t goddamn fair. It’s not supposed to hurt this bad. I’ve lost so many before you.. why do you have to be the one that’s it for me? If I can’t even save you, what good am I to anyone else? I rose from my perch and began to pace the ledge, weary fingers raking through unkempt hair as I went over, and over, and over again how I was this close to protecting her, this close to having her up there on that rooftop with me again.
It kills me knowing you died without knowing how I feel the most. I lied to you, Lux. I do love you. I love you so much it terrifies me -- I wasn’t supposed to get this attached, I shouldn’t have, but you make it so hard to stay away, I couldn’t help myself. I.. God, I am so sorry I failed you. I’m sorry, Lux. I am so sorry it’s killing me.

Moving In - Nik Ryder x f!MC
Summary: “You know, most people exchange phone numbers before they move in with together.” “Most people also haven’t been brought together by fighting a murderous bag of bones. Also you already have it...” “Wait what?!” Leah moves in with Nik officially after Chapter 5 of Anything. It goes exactly as expected.
All the links for Anything: Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 (final chapter) | Scared To Live (interlude from Nik’s POV)
Warnings: two people who bicker almost as much as they love each other, some swear words, kissing, mention of trauma and alcohol, overall pretty light-hearted
Tumblr media
“How-” Push. “Much-” Push. “Clothing-” Push. “Do you own?!”
Nik liked to think of himself as physically strong (and he would say he had the abs to prove it). But just how can one box of clothes be so heavy? He was huffing and puffing the entire walk from the moving truck and into the Graveyard Shift, especially when they had to go up a flight of stairs to get to his--no, their apartment.
“I own a normal amount of clothes. Maybe you just need to work out more,” Leah teased as she put down her own box effortlessly on the floor of the living room, stopping to stretch her arms over her head. She had to admit her Fae power of super strength came in handy sometimes and she was thankful that she was now able to summon it even when it wasn’t an emergency.
He snorted. “Chasing monsters keeps me plenty fit, thank you very much. But you sure do own a lot of clothes for someone who loses them like you do.”
Her cheeks burned at the memory of their reunion. “I had to prove it was me!”
“That was really your first instinct?!”
“You complaining about that?”
Nik chuckled and pulled her by the waist, nuzzling her neck. “You know I would never, darlin’.”
Leah rolled her eyes and pecked him on the lips. “I come back and agree to be with you and since then it’s been ‘rook’ or ‘babe’ or ‘sugar’ and now ‘darlin’’. Is that why you’re called Nik...because you’re a...nickname type of guy?”
“Shit, rook; was just tryin’ to be romantic here,” Nik groaned as she laughed a little too hard at her own joke. Any exasperation instantly dissipated once he heard her laugh; he missed it the past three months. She kissed him again, enjoying every moment.
“I know. I just love teasing you.”
“Lil’ shit.”
“Ah, another one, Mr. Nic--hey!” Leah shouted out as Nik suddenly wrapped her up in a bear hug, swinging her around. Her shouts soon turned into laughter, and soon the small apartment was filled with the sound of both of them laughing.
Nik finally put her down on the counter with his hands still on her hips. She rested her forehead against his, still in slight disbelief that she was moving in with him. It was only one week before that she crash landed back into his life, and after they talked things out and survived yet another attempt on their lives (he owed her his life...again), she decided to move to New Orleans for good.
The thought of it as their apartment still felt weird to them both; but it was his idea for her to move in with him. Nik remembered giving some half-assed excuse about them being both business and personal partners so it only made sense financially...he ignored that dark voice in his head irrationally sneering at him that if he took his eyes off her for even one second she would disappear again. Leah agreed with his staunch assessment, if only to curb the fear that this was all another weird (but wonderful) dream and she was actually alone in Wyoming. She frowned at the thought of her old life. Nik noticed the pensive look on her face.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
The corner of her right lip quirked upwards without amusement as she shrugged. “Are you sure it’s okay for me to move in? After I’ve been probably the biggest pain in the ass since we met a few months ago?”
“First of all, it was my idea for you to move in; no offense but we’re technically unemployed until a client hires us and I’m in a better position from whoever hired me to protect you,” Nik answered, actually hoping that his honesty wasn’t too offensive. “And second, you’re a pain in the ass...but you’re my pain in the ass and you had your reasons for everything. I love you just the same, okay? So no saying you can’t live here unless you really don’t wanna.”
“I do have student loans to pay off...” Leah grinned. “Gotta love your definition of romance, babe. This pain in the ass loves you too!”
Satisfied and sneaking in one last kiss, the woman jumped off the counter. She tied her hair and rolled her sleeves up. “Now let’s get unpacking!”
.
After a few hours of them unpacking Leah’s things, bickering, and randomly making out (“We’re never gonna get anything done like this, rook!”), the two Nighthunters stood in their now shared bedroom, about to finish up. Nik took out the last piece of clothing: a very familiar velvet, royal purple dress with a gold body chain to go with it. He held it up to her, brow quirked mischievously.
“Any chance I could see you in this again?”
Leah collapsed the last box and put it in the pile with all the others. Her eyes moved to the dress that cost more than half her wardrobe. “Still can’t believe you picked that one out. If we sneak into Persephone again, maybe...”
“How about on a date? A real one.”
“You asking me out, Ryder?”
“What’s it look like, Mendoza?”
She couldn’t help the silly grin on her face, as if she was suddenly a teenage girl talking to her crush for the first time. “I accept. Would this be technically our first date? Because I don’t know whether to count us running from the Bloodwraith...”
“Yes, a real date, rook. But no promises that monsters won’t try to attack us or anything, sorry,” Nik responded, hanging the dress up in their shared closet space.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” She smiled brightly and took a seat on the bed. “We’re really doing this backwards, huh? You know, most people exchange phone numbers before they move in together.”
“Most people also haven’t been brought together by fighting a murderous bag of bones.” Nik turned to her and sheepishly scratched the back of his head. “Also you already have it...”
“Wait what?!”
Nik took a deep breath before speaking again. “First, I wanna say I’m so sorry for this; I shouldn’t have contacted you when it was clear you didn’t wanna talk to me. Katherine offered me your number one night after I asked about you and I wanted to be selfish and take it.”
“So...you called me while I was gone?” Leah asked, her eyebrows coming together in confusion. “But I don’t remember you calling...I mean I had dreams you did a few times, but those weren’t real.”
“Well, one of them wasn’t a dream,” Nik went on. “It was nighttime and you picked up the phone slurrin’ drunk. I remember asking if you were safe, and you said you were home.”
Leah’s cheeks burned and she put her head in her hands. “Oh my God...I really don’t remember anything from that conversation. This is so embarrassing! You must’ve thought I was such an idiot!”
“No, you have nothing to be ashamed of, rook.” Nik cautiously sidled up beside her, resting a hand on the small of her back. “I’m so sorry I didn’t respect your wishes. I’m the wrong one here.”
Leah didn’t pull away, but she also couldn’t look at him. She tried to remember anything from the past three months that didn’t involve alcohol; she could count them all on one hand. “I...I really had a problem. I have a problem. I know that moving and being in a relationship won’t fix everything, but it’s hitting me that I need real help.”
“And I’m with you every step of the way.” He pulled her into a hug, letting her rest her face into his shoulder. “I meant it when I said that I’m with you...”
“To the bitter end,” Leah finished, her voice breaking at the last word. Nik tightened his hold on her, an aching in his chest as he remembered that he once kept that promise; but he never anticipated it to be her bitter end. He closed his eyes and relished in the warmth of her body against his, blocking out the memory of her cold, pale skin and still heart. Eventually he loosened his hold and tilted her chin up to look into her eyes.
“All the ragged parts of me...stitched back together when I’m with you,” he murmured only for her to hear. “I only want the same for you.”
Leah pulled him in for a warm, tender kiss. When they pulled away, a serene smile graced her features; Nik could swear there was something magical about her smile.
“I love you, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings us,” she said, her voice strong and hopeful. Leah could feel her sunny disposition returning day by day, and it showed.
“I love you too, rook.” Nik pulled her to lie down beside him, their fingers intertwined. “What do you wanna do tonight? No jobs. We can go out or stay in, and I promise no snake tequila for either of us.”
Leah snorted and sprang up. “I say we stay in tonight in our apartment. Takeout?”
“You read my mind.”
“And there’s a reality show I’ve been meaning to catch up on...” Leah was already making her way to the living room while Nik followed. She babbled on about how it was a show where an American and a foreigner have to get married within 90 days for a special visa and that itself is, of course, where the drama begins and this season was especially dramatic and blah, blah, blah. Nik snorted at how invested she was in the show while they looked at food places.
The two Nighthunters spent the entire night snuggled up on their couch, talking and eating and canoodling. Leah sighed in satisfaction as sleep eventually took over them, her head resting on Nik’s chest. She finally felt like her life was going somewhere, and all that mattered was that they were in it together.
================================================
A/N: I hope you like yet another fic of me refusing to let these two go onto the next installment just yet! Okay in reality I’ve been writing the first chapter of that and am almost done but med school got weird and my mental health took a dive and COVID-19 happened and blah, blah, blah. Bonus points if you know exactly what reality show Leah is talking about! Any and all comments are greatly appreciated, and I hope you’re all staying safe and healthy 💗

"Nik, I'm back home!!!", Alex, his girlfriend announced in the evening as she entered the apartment which she was sharing with her boyfriend, Nik Ryder. Nik was delighted to see her.
He moved closer to her and wrapped his arms around her to greet her.
"I hope you had a good day, rook. I've been thinking of you all day."
"Really? I'm just tired."
"No wonder you must be tired, you've been running through my mind all day. Do you want to lie down and relax? Or would you like me to make you some tea?", he chuckled.
"No, I'm fine.", she whispered without meeting his eyes.
"Everything all right? Did something happen?"
"No, nothing."
"Come on now, don't lie to me, rook. I know when something's not right. Tell me.", he requested while trying to make eye contact with her.
"Nik, we don't spend much time together anymore which is sad."
"I know, baby, but you've got to understand that both of us have big responsibilities at work. While I protect the city at night, you're handling Lamrian at day. But don't you worry, that's gonna change someday and we'll have all the time we want again like before.", he wasn't sure but still tried to assure his girlfriend.
"Thanks, I hope so too."
Nik kissed her again, more passionately, and caressed her cheek before answering.
"I love you, Alex.", he whispered. While holding her by the hand, he walked inside the living room with his girl, hugging her from time to time.
"Hey rook, are you hungry? I made pasta for dinner."
"Yummy, pasta!!!"
He smiled widely at her cute reaction.
"I know you love pasta. Wait here, let me go prepare everything."
After some time preparing dinner and setting the table, both were seated at the table. Nik served her some pasta, then he served himself. Both silently ate until she spoke.
"You know what day tomorrow will be?", she asked.
"Tomorrow's Friday. Why are you asking?"
"I know it's Friday, but it's a special day."
"What day are you referring to, baby?", he asked her while looking a little puzzleed.
"Think!!"
After a moment of silence, he realized what she was referring to and he smiled gently.
"Of course, tomorrow is your birthday!! You're turning 26. I can't believe it's already been one whole year, rook."
"You remembered my birthday!!"
"Of course, I remembered!! But thanks for reminding me again, I was thinking about it this morning and the past few days. Can't believe it just slipped so easily out of my mind. So yeah, I haven't forgotten your birthday, babe. I love you and it is a special day for you!! I have something prepared for tomorrow, just wait and see, Alex."
"But you still forgot something. Nik, tomorrow isn't only my birthday, but also our very first anniversary. I met you one year ago for the very first time. We may not have been dating at that time then, but don't you think we should celebrate that too?"
"Damn, I forgot about that?! Now, I feel terrible for forgetting the date of our celebration. Sorry, forgive me. I'll make it up to you, I swear. Tomorrow there will be two parties in one!!", he laughed a little, but still felt terrible about forgetting their very first and special day.
Alex was now silent and continued finishing her pasta. But there was something about her silence that bothered him. The past few days were rough for him and decided to confess something.
"Rook, I'm really happy with you and I feel really lucky. I'm not great at math, but we're a perfect match. You're my soulmate. But we haven't been spending so much time together anymore and it's starting to worry me too. I hope you didn't think that I wouldn't notice, but you always looked so busy and tired and there are times when, to be honest, it feels like... like... I'm a bother. Am I imagining this, or do you...?", Nik looked very upset while confessing.
"Oh Nik, you're never a bother. I love you. You're my heart, my soul, my everything."
"Are you serious, rook?"
"Yes, baby."
He sighed in relief before answering back.
"Damn, I was starting to overthink things. It's just that when I see you tired and overworked... I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel pressured by me. Because if that was the case, my love, it would break my heart."
"Oh, I'm so sorry you thought like this. It's not because of you. I'm soooo sorry to make you feel that way. Please forgive me."
"There's nothing to forgive, my love. You mean a lot to me and I'm sorry if I've been annoying to you. You know that you're important to me, I just wanted to clarify that with you. But now everything's fine, you don't have to worry anymore. Now let's just focus on having a great anniversary tomorrow... Okay?", he gently whispered in her ear while caressing her cheek.
"You're not annoying, Nik."
"Thank you, babe. I love you, Alex.", he confessed then planted a quick but gentle kiss on her cheek.
"So, are we good now?"
"Of course, we're good now, my love. There's nothing more in the world I want than to see you smile."
"Thanks, Nik. You're the best."
He smiled, took her hand and pulled her gently to his chest.
"No, you're the best, my dear. You're beautiful inside and out. I'm so lucky to have you in my life. I love you so much."
"Love you too!"
He pulled her even closer to his chest and kissed her hair.
"I'll make sure you have the best day tomorrow."
I feel so lucky with you, Nik.", she confessed which made him smile even more while he caressed her cheek.
"I can say the same for you, Alex, but it's not a thing of luck, it's meant to be. As I said, you are my soulmate, my dream woman, my partner and the love of my life. You're the reason why I get up every day with so much motivation to face the world. Don't ever forget how much you mean to me, okay?", he pulled her to him again and kissed the top of her head, very lovingly. Then he spoke again.
"It's getting late, tomorrow we have a big day, and we need to get some rest. What do you say?"
"I agree! I can't wait for tomorrow."
He let her go and both headed toward their bedroom to sleep. Nik was very excited, he had prepared a surprise party for her. Will he be able to sleep tonight at all with his excitement? Both were looking forward happily for the next day.
Tumblr media
Nik just put the final touches on everything. His planned surprise for his girlfriend must go perfectly. He requested her to come earlier today from Lamrian so they could celebrate together. A knock on the door made his heart beat faster. He ran to the door and opened it, revealing the love of her life who looked more beautiful than ever. A big smile appeared on her face. He was stunned by her beauty. Speechless he couldn't take his eyes off her. Both stepped closer to each other with a tender look in their eyes. While Nik Ryder was wearing a suit, Alex wore an elegant dress with matching high heels.
"Nik...", she suddenly stumbled as she entered, but Nik quickly grabbed her to prevent her from falling.
"Are you all right, darling?", he anxiously asked.
"Yes. Hello, Nik!!", she smiled.
"You look amazing, I like that outfit on you. I can't believe you decided to wear the maroon-colored dress with the golden body chain that I once bought for you. My Maroon Majesty."
"Of course. Thanks!! Nik, you have great taste and I love this dress. By the way, you look very handsome, Nik.", she sweetly giggled.
"Ah thanks, I know I am. But I'm a bit nervous, I want to make this day perfect for you. The truth is that I was dying to see you. Hope you like what I've planned, my rook."
Then Nik leaned forward and kissed her. He caressed her cheeks and pulled her even closer to him. His eyes met hers while whispering in a low tone in the ear.
"I've been waiting all day for this moment. You must be tired because you've been running through my mind all day.", he chuckled then.
"I'm glad to hear it, that makes me happy.", she giggled then too.
Like a true gentleman, the boyfriend helped his girlfriend take off her coat and took her hand to go sit down.
"Please, come on, let's have a wonderful dinner."
Taking her hand in his, they walked to the dining table. Nik seated her by pulling her chair, then he sat down on another chair in front of her. The candles illuminated him and made him look even more handsome. There was a romantic atmosphere and as the two of them gazed at each other, he squeezed her hand tenderly.
The young man hesitated before he continued.
"I know we've been dating for a year now and we've been doing great but... I wanted to tell you something that's been in my head for quite a while and I can't keep it secret..."
"What? What it is?", she suddenly became surprised about the sudden turn. She worried, held her breath and waited for him to continue. He looked very serious at her.
"The truth is that I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you, and I want to know what you think about the idea... I want to know what you think, do you think you'd ever want to marry me?"
"What??!!! But you never wanted to marry, Nik."
"Look dear, I know I told you from the beginning that I wasn't interested in marriage. It's true, but with time some things have changed. I'm surprised by myself too, but... When you find the right person, you change, and in my case... I've found you.", he confessed, gently took her hand and kissed it sweetly which made Alex's heart almost melt.
"Oh, Nik... Am I dreaming or are you saying this?"
"Well, you pushed the wall with the bricks I've built. You just couldn't stay on your goddamn side cuz you're are too stubborn, dear. So I want to marry you someday. Not now, but someday. I want you to be mine and only mine. I get jealous when other people try to flirt or even try to impress you. I want you to be mine only and I only your's. I want you to be my wife one day. But... Not now."
"And what about children?", she teased.
"Uhhh, well. I... Alex, I... I thought..."
"Nik, don't worry. I was just teasing. You've made me already so happy with the marriage confession, dear. Thanks for making this day even more special than before. That's great news and I will patiently wait for the day or night when you will finally propose to me because now I have hope."
"Unless I change my mind."
"No!!! Don't you dare, future husband!!", she warned him which made him laugh.
But let's go ahead and eat.", he suggested, serving her meal first, then himself. Both started eating, looking at you with a satisfied smile and with eyes full of love.
After dinner, it was time for a sweet dessert.
Nik took her hand and led her to a big table decorated with a romantic cake, candles and flowers surrounding it. He gently cut a piece and fed her.
"Mmmhhh, yummy. I feel like I'm in heaven. So creamy.
"Glad you like it."
"Nik, sid Cal help you with the cake?", she raised her eyebrow while staring at him.
"How... How did you know? I mean, I... Yes... Yes, you caught me, rook. Wolf guy helped me with the cake, but I swear I did the rest all by myself.", he panicked which made her just giggle.
"Well, Cal gave a lot of treats so my pretty brain immediately sensed that it was one of his excellent creations. Mmmmh, the buttercream.", she swooned a little.
"Yeah, Cal is great at baking and all. I get it, I get it. Now let's just focus on both of us, okay.", he rolled his eyes. He just wanted to turn their day into something special and only about them.  But Nik was still thankful for Cal's help. He definitely wouldn't have arranged a cake on such short notice since he was already busy with other preparations. Maybe next time he'll order earlier, directly from a cake shop.
After each ate a piece of cake, it was time for the next surprise.
Nik led Alex into their bedroom which was beautifully decorated. She was stunned by the view. It's a room with their bed covered by a romantic canopy and many candles around it. The ceiling had red heart-shaped balloons attached to it and there were red roses spread everywhere. He pulled her into his arms and watched her with tenderness.
"Just for you dear, I have prepared everything.", he whispered and planted a quick kiss on her cheek.
"Nik, this is so romantic. Roses are my favorite flowers. And rose petals on the bed? Wow, so gorgeous!!! Thank you, my sweetheart!!!!"
"Now, shall we spend a little time here alone, my love? After dessert, we could burn some calories together on bed.", he winked.
"I love your playful side, my love."
He took her by the hand and led her towards their double bed. Gently pushing her playfully back, he let her sit on the bed.
"Oh, before I forget... I bought a gift for you."
He opened a gift box for her, revealing a beautifully, bejeweled necklace.
"This is for you, honey. I hope you like it."
"Eeeek, this is so pretty!!! So sparkly!! Thanks, but it looks too expensive."
"Expensive? For the future Duchess of Lamrian?? Hey, you have to accept. I bought it for you only. Don't look at the price but at my love."
"But Nik, I..."
"Rook, please."
"Nik..."
"Look, the price was nothing for me. Remember the six figures I got from protecting you? The million dollars? It was only because of you, that's why I decided to spend them all on you and your happiness. They're yours. It's our money, baby. You're worth it."
"I see, but still."
"Seriously? You know, you're the most stubborn person I have ever met.", he was about to lose his patience.
"Okay, okay, I accept. Sorry, I was just... It's so pretty. So sweet of you, Nik. I suggest that we should invest or save the money for our future. But for now, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, Nik. Thanks, but I sadly have no gift for you right now."
Nik shook his head as he caressed her neck and pulled her close.
"You don't need to give me a gift, because seeing you happy and beeimg with me is my best gift. But just so you know, I'm not done yet with the surprises. You know, I may be a terrible dancer, but I've got great moves in bed.", he winked.
"Oh..."
Later, after a passionate moment in their bedroom, it was time for the last surprise. He lead her outside. Tonight was a beautiful night, the moonlight created the perfect atmosphere for some romance.
He looked her straight in the eyes, holding her hand.
"We're going to a special place, so you gotta close your eyes for a sec?"
Nik waited for her reaction with anticipation, hoping she would trust him and agree to close her eyes. He couldn't contain his happiness and satisfaction by getting her to agree to close the eyes. With closed eyes, she waited for the next step.
"Okay, great! Now hold my hand and just keep walking, keep your eyes closed but don't open them at all until I tell you okay? And most importantly since I know you very well... Don't even peak!!"
"Okay, fine. I won't open my eyes till you allow me, I promise."
He led her a little further and she could feel a gentle breeze on her face. After a few minutes, he suddenly stopped. The sound of birds and a stream of water running were to hear. Alex waited a few seconds, Nik caressed her cheek a little and after a while, he finally told her to open her eyes. A romantic and very beautiful spot in the middle of the forest. A quiet place, with a waterfall running over the stones and making a sound that gave an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. The moonlight illuminated the water and reflected its light. Colorful wildflowers everywhere. The entire place was filled with flowers. The aroma in the air was divine. A very romantic atmosphere perfect for two loving people. On the fresh grass, Alex discovered a blanket.
"We're in the bayou, Nik. Your favorite place on this planet and where we shared our first kiss.", she recognized.
He leaned forward, kissed her softly on the lips, and then whispered.
"That's right, rook. Where we both kissed for the first time. Happy Birthday to you and a very Happy Anniversary to us."
Tumblr media
Later, Alex decided to give her boyfriend a gift too since he worked so hard to make her happy and their day memorable. A little gift for her beloved Nik. Sadly she hadn't bought anything for him and shops were already closed, so she decided to quickly slip into their bedroom and then return to him. Nik was patiently waiting for her in the bayou, not aware of her plan. She finally returned to him with her loyal violin in her hand.
"Should I play for you?"
It caught him by surprise at how unexpected it was. Then he glanced at her face, a look that let her understand how much he liked the idea.
"Yeah, I would love to hear you play."
Nik sat Alex on a large rock near the small river and leaned on the rock himself next to her, with curiosity and expectation in his eyes. He watched her with tender affection, waiting.
The way Alex played her instrument touched a deep cord in him as if he seemed to be transported in his world by the melody. Even though she played a romantic song, she noticed that the rhythm was more slow and melancholy now. He looked at her with adoration and admiration, enjoying her music fully. Until finally, he whispered.
"You're the most beautiful woman on earth and I love you."

Not Love (Nik x MC)
So after this chapter I had to write a fic. Because of Nik's reaction to MC saying she's in love with someone there is amazing, and I have to write his thoughts.
So here it is! Unedited, as usual! Tbh I'm not really happy with it, but whatever. XD
Dedicated to you, @mariaoz ! Maybe this fic will drive you closer to the dark side. ;)
Tagging also the sweet @choices-fam and my new friend, @desiree-0816 ! Thank you for your wonderful support! =)
If anyone else wants to be tagged, just comment below! Just don't forget to say whether to all my fics or only to specific ships! =)
Pairing: Nik x F!MC (Alex)
Summary: After Alex confesses that she's in love with someone, Nik takes some time to think it over.
---------
I think I'm in love with someone here.
Those words seared themselves in his mind. Nik didn't know what to do, their ghost worse than the specters he met aboard the ship.
Why did those words affect him so much?
The door closed behind him, and Nik breathed a sigh of relief. He finally had time to himself, time without Alex. A moment of clarity.
He started pacing, not bothering to turn on the light in the dark room. It was vast and antique- the polish almost as ancient as Lady Fate. The air was cold to the touch, like a haunting melody attempting to enter his mind.
But it couldn't, because the words Alex said still echoed in his head. I think I'm in love with someone here.
Nik cursed. He was supposed to protect Alex from the world of night, but how could he? She had too much power on him if only one sentence made him lose his focus.
He didn't know how to react to that news. The knowledge that Alex could have feelings for someone, let alone him, rooted Nik to the spot. But somehow, the option for it to be Cal, or even one of the girls, gave him the urge to shoot an arrow right in their heart.
He especially hated Alex's relationship with Cal. It was impossible to miss the hunger in his gaze when he saw her. In those moments it was almost like he was a wolf chasing after his prey.
Nik closed his eyes. He forced himself to calm down, but slowly his thoughts drifted to Alex. The taste on her lips, like a mixture of night and day. Her determination and will to fight, eyes shining like the burning fire inside her.
Maybe... she really could...love him?
Nik opened his eyes, and looked down at his clenched hand. He frowned. Was he really hoping that she...
And if she did... what did that mean for him? Could he also...
Nik shook his head. No. It couldn't be. This feeling, his protective need to protect her was only that. Yes, he could never imagine life without Alex, but that didn't mean anything.
Nik sighed. He would figure this out in the morning.
And then a knock sounded on the door, and Nik strode hesitantly toward the door.
And when he opened it, there stood Alex.

Oneshot: Nik x MC
Tumblr media
*some gang bonding time after the current storyline*
“Mphff..”
She winced at the grunt and tried shoving the sound away. Her fingers went right through something, or, wait, did that something slipped through her fingers?
The growl came again, this time a tone lower. She opened her eyes to find her cheek pressed to something squishy. Also, she was facing some man. He shifted and looked at her.
“Who... are you?” he choked.
She giggled. His face looked funny with all the sand stuck to it and some greens in his hair. Even more amusing was trying to reach out for him. Her fingers kept going through something over and over, yet her own hand she couldn’t see at all.
“No idea.” Her voice came out hoarse. She smiled. “And you?”
The man grinned. “Same.”
Now the whole thing sounded even funnier to her. She reached out to him. Or thought she did.
“Wrong– hand,” he choked through his laughter.
She joined in and looked down to where he was pointing. Indeed, her right hand has all this time lay quite still. And the man was to her right too, their fingers interlaced, he was clutching her hand.
“Why?” She giggled again.
“Woke up like that.” He squeezed her fingers a little.
“Ok,” she nodded to herself and scrambled to sit up. She didn’t let go of his hand and crawled a bit closer. “Guess, we are not supposed to then.”
“Huh?”
“Like it’s not allooowed,” she leaned down closer to his face. “Or something.”
He shrugged his shoulders and also sat up.
“No complains here.”
They exchanged a glance and burst out laughing again. She felt tears in the corners of her eyes. Wiping those, she realised she also had sand stuck to her face.
“So...?”
“So?”
“Oh, hey, you’ve got a pendant!” He suddenly reached out and tugged the chain up to her eyes.
“There is a word.”
“What does it say?”
“Nik...” Suspicious, she squinted at the pendant a bit longer. “Is that my name? Maaan, that’s lame. Sounds too much of a male name.”
“I think that’s my name,” he interrupted.
“Oh...” She blinked. “Then you must have mine!” And with that she pounced and tackled him into the sand. Straddled his chest as her fingers slipped down the collar and under his shirt. “A-ha!” She tugged our a matching pendant and read, “Mirabel... I still have a pretty dumb name.”
He chuckled and reached out to brush a strand of hair from her eyes.
“Well, you do have a pretty face.”
She giggled.
“Oh, I know.” He grinned. “Let’s shorten it! Say, Mira?”
She beamed and nodded enthusiastically.
A few steps away Katherine rolled her eyes.
“That’s enough wolfsbane smoke for both of them.” She glanced at Cal sitting on the rock nearby. “And to think only werewolves were affected... How come you are holding on ok when they are,” she pointed at the silly giggling couple, “like that. Ugh. Just listening to them gives me cavity.”
p.s. who wants in on the nightbound fics taglist? ;)

Warning: Mention of death // Angst // Fluff
Pairings: Adrian Raines X MC // Nik Ryder X MC
Words: 1.300
Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3 // Part 4 // Part 5 // Part 6
As always, tags in the reblog!
"Are you nervous?" Adrian asked, attentively looking at Amy. They were in a private room of his lab, where two beds had been set up for her and Alex. It was a small space but it had everything they could possibly need to assist them if there was a problem.
"A little." He smiled at her, compassionate and supportive.
"Everything will be fine. I promise." He tried to reassure her… And himself. "Even Ryder gave his approval." He added, with a slightly sarcastic tone.
"Because Nik is such an expert in the potion terrain,” Alex commented as Nik rolled his eyes while Amy let out a small chuckle.
“There are many things you still don’t know about me, rook.”
“If you say so.” Both women walked to the beds, looking at each other for a moment, before sitting on the mattresses. Amy took Alex’s hand, squeezing it. “I hope this works,” Alex said, her eyes fixed on the woman in front of her. Fixed on her own face. Alex returned the gesture.
“Me too.” Amy sighed. “Drinks on me if it does.” Alex giggled and Amy let a little smile out.
“You got yourself a deal.” They stood in silence until Adrian, gently clearing his throat, called their attention.
“If you are both ready, we may start.” He pointed to the scientists in the door who were carrying two identical glasses with the potion. Amy looked at Alex again and she nodded.
“We are.” As the liquid ran down Amy's throat, Adrian closely observed her. Amy, from Alex's body, looked at him as she was lying down. She winked at him although her smile was small and nervous. He walked over to her.
"I'll be right here." He knelt beside her and gently kissed her forehead. "Waiting for you."
"You've been doing that a lot lately." Adrian chuckled, holding her hand.
"I don’t mind." His fingers softly caress her hair.
“A man who doesn't mind waiting?” She leaned on his touch. “How did I get so lucky?” He softly chuckled again and sweetly smiled at her.
“You are worth any wait, Amy.” She blinked slowly and heavily. “And, believe me, I’m the lucky one.”
"Debatable." His hand cupped her right cheek, softly brushing with his thumb the soft skin under it. “Adrian… If this doesn't work, if anything happens…”
“I won't let anything bad happen to you, Amy. Not ever again.” Her eyes slowly drifted close as the potion quickly kicked on.
“I just don't want you to feel guilty.” She whispered as her breathing became shallow and her heartbeat slowed down drastically, her skin pale and a bit cooler as he tried to ignore the similarities with the night in the Met, ignoring his fear of losing her again.
“I won't be feeling anything more than happiness when you wake up.” With a small move of her head, she nodded. “And you will wake up sound and safe, Amy.” He said, desperately trying to believe his own words. “I promise.”
"See you soon." She said in a barely audible murmur.
"See you soon." He repeated as her hand went limp in his hold. He kissed her knuckles and reluctantly freed her hand, standing up.

Nik watched warily while Alex took the potion. He knew it was the right decision, and so far the only possible solution they had found, but, at the end of the day, he wasn’t ecstatic about it. He watched how her lips touched the glass and how in one fast motion, the liquid had disappeared. She lay on the mattress, and after one second of hesitation, he sat beside her. Amy and Adrian were softly speaking beside them so he just focused on her. “Alex…” With a little hesitation, he guided his hand towards hers, taking it as gently as possible. “I will be watching over you, rook.”
“Because you have to?”
“‘Cause… You are important to me.” He noticed the tiny smile that lifted the corners of her lips and the light squeeze of her fingers around his.
“Glad to hear it.” She sighed deeply, her head falling to the side as her eyelids felt heavy like she hadn't slept in days. “I know there's a lot we need to talk about… And that a lot has happened lately but… I’m glad you are here, Nik.”
“There’s no other place in the world I would prefer to be, Alex.” Her eyes were finally closed and her whole body seemed drained, looking vulnerable as the day that Thomas attacked her. He stood, almost at the same time as Raines, and walked beside him to the chairs in front of the beds.
A few minutes later, Nik cut the silence. "You know, I didn't know vampires could be so... sappy," Adrian smirked at Nik's words.
"Of course we can. We are not nighthunters after all." He crossed his arms over his chest, never looking away from the two women.
"C'mon Raines, I did my homework." Adrian turned his focus to him and lifted his brow. "Your past precedes you, pal."
"It might. I won't deny that I have done … dreadful things in my past. Things I'm not proud of, but I deeply regret them." For a moment, Nik saw pain and regret in his face. He wondered if he had the same expression when he talked about his own past. “But I changed. I left all that behind me.”
"Does she know?" Nik asked with a head gesture referring to Amy.
"Most of it." Nik nodded, pensive. “She’s a Bloodkeeper. I wouldn’t be able to hide my past from her even if I wanted to.” He smiled, looking proud of Amy. "And I don’t want to. She deserves honesty." For a moment the only sound in the lab room was the distant noise of the machines from the other part of the lab. Both Amy's and Alex's heartbeats had slowed to a near stop. “Does Alex know about your private conversation with the Fate?” Nik narrowed his eyes with suspicion and Adrian smirked. “I did my homework as well.” He considered Raines' words, assessing his answer.
“No. She didn’t say much.”
“I see.” Adrian looked at the timer that had been set up above the beds. Only forty minutes had passed and the nerves were settling in by the second.
Nik stood, taking a few steps around. “Goddammit.” He said, frustrated, stopping in front of Alex's body. “This is torture.”
“I agree.” Adrian put his hands together, tightly, until he sighed and relaxed again. “But unfortunately, there's nothing we can do right now. Just wait.”
“I know that,” Nik said with clear irritation in his voice. “You seem calm, tho.”
“I'm terrified,” Adrian responded with such sincerity that Nik turned to watch him, surprised, as the vampire walked to the side of Amy's bed with a complex look in his eyes. “It's the second time that I have to watch Amy unconscious for hours desperately wanting that she will be okay. The second time I'm scared to lose her.” A deep sigh escaped him. “Feeling powerless to help her.”
“...I understand the sentiment.” Nik put his bow against the wall, near to him but lowering his ward for the first time. “If Alex doesn't wake up…” He ran his fingers through his hair. “I really hurt her, you know? I need to fix it.” He trailed off, with regret. “I can't lose her. Not again.”
“It seems our concerns are similar.” Adrian took off his blazer and loosened the tie around his neck.
“Looks like it.” Seconds turned to minutes and minutes to hours as time slowly passed. According to Ivy, the minimum waiting time was five hours, and the maximum time was eight hours. If the clock marked more, the results could be catastrophic.

Beautiful Imperfections Part 1 (Nik x MC)
[Note: Nightbound is just too good to not make a fic or ten fics for and while I love all the LI’s in the book (seriously, its a little insane how great they all are), my Nik inspiration was alive and kicking this afternoon which resulted in me hurrying to put my random and scattered thoughts on paper and try to rearrange them to make something actually decent. Did I succeed? Maybe. Probably... hopefully?]
[Summary: Every scar has a story to go along with it. Nik finally tells Sam some of his own. Part 2 is in the works!]
[Song Inspiration: Elegy- Nathan Matthew David.]
Tumblr media
It’s still well into the night, but my brain is working the graveyard shift, so I’m wide awake. Everything’s quiet. Outside the single barred window the sky is still black with the world and its troubles being muted until sunrise. It’s a short-lived standstill, I know, but I’ll take anything I can get at this point. Being hunted by a bloodthirsty creature has more cons than it does pros.
Moonlight casts into the room, causing the skin of Nik’s bare torso to glow like smooth marble and the usually sharp features of his face to be softened as he lays silently underneath me. With my knees on either side of his hips, I watch his chest rise and fall, rise and fall, counting each breath in and each exhale out to counterattack the anxiety that threatens to choke what little life is left in me. And even though his draws are deep due to sleep, he doesn’t make a sound. If I wasn’t looking down at him I wouldn’t even know he was here.
It’s the one time I get to see him like this. Untroubled. Unmoving. Bare. No mask to hide behind or opponent to impress with cunning wordplay. Not the Nighthunter Nik, but my Nik, hidden demons and all.
Here, in the solitude of his bedroom with him pressed up against me and the heat from last night still tingling up my spine, I’ve never felt safer, even with all of my flaws on display. I trust him more than anyone else.
You shouldn’t, utters the annoying voice in the back of my head.
“The Prince of Swords… he knows more than he says, and the dark in him is strong. But he won’t leave your side.”
My eyebrows knit together as I stare down at Nik.
“Don’t trust the jealous boy.”
Desperate for something to ground me, I reach out and gently brush my fingers along a long, deep scar just under his collarbone. Nik’s eyes snap open. Within moments he has my wrist gripped between his large fingers and away from his skin.
“What are you doing?” He asks me curiously, cautiously. Sleep still tints his voice but his eyes are alert and watchful.
“Nothing but sinless things, I promise.” I smirk at him.
“Nothing is sinless when it comes to you, Samantha.” His voice is teasing as he guides my fingers back to his chest, pressing my palm over his steady heart.
“Sam,” I correct, causing him to smile smugly up at me.
I brush my fingertips over the mark again, tracing the mangled tissue lightly before grazing it with my nails. Nik doesn’t say anything, just watches me. His eyes flit over my face as if taking every detail to memory. I should feel vulnerable. I’m exposed, straddling him with nothing but a sheet clinging low to my waist. His skin burns against my own with nothing there to separate us. I should want to hide myself, but I don’t.
“What’s it from?” I ask him.
He doesn’t answer right away and I’m about to ask a second time when he says, “Skin-walker. One of my earlier jobs. It was posing as a coyote, trying to lure a little boy from his front yard into the woods. I intervened, it attacked.”
“How’d you know it was a skin-walker if it was posing as a coyote?”
“Some monsters can change their appearance but no monster can change its eyes.”
I point to another spot. Three round wounds positioned close together, each the size of two of my fingers combined. “And these?”
“I have a goblin to thank for those,” Nik tells me as he rests his palms on my hips, gripping them softly. “He was more difficult to track down. He’d been terrorizing the town by stealing their dogs and leaving their bones behind, thought he was being funny. He knew I was around so he hid himself well… for a time. The asshole was living down in the sewers. It was close enough to the city to come and go whenever he pleased but hidden well enough for them to never find him.” He rubs his thumb over the marks. “Turns out goblins have pretty sharp nails and they aren’t afraid to use them.”
Before I can ask him about another, he suddenly sits up so we’re nose to nose. His gaze drops to my lips. “Are we playing twenty questions now?” Nik teases.
“Maybe. If you want to.”
“I want to do many things with you, Samantha, but silly games is not one of them.” His voice grows deep, husky, and I find myself subconsciously tightening my legs around his hips in anticipation.
I wind my hand across his broad shoulder and around his neck to grip the hair at his nape a little too tightly in my fist. Nik sucks in a sharp breath. “But I like playing games,” I whisper against his lips. The hunger in his eyes makes his smile seem almost predatory.
My other hand wanders greedily. Tracing the veins up his muscled arm, feeling the tight skin of his back, dipping teasingly low on his waist and over his hip bone until my fingers meet another scar. Newer. Deeper. The skin still red and raw and sensitive.
“Bloodwraith,” I whisper. His eyes soften as he tightens his arms around me. The memory comes to mind, sharp and blinding like a photo being snapped. One minute he was there next to me, and the next he wasn’t. Blood warming my hands as I reached for him. Someone screaming, and it wasn’t until later that I realized it was me. Raised voices telling me to do something though I couldn’t understand what. I hold Nik close to my chest.
We don’t say anything for a while then. Enjoying the feel, the scent, the heat of each other. I rest my chin against his shoulder and press my lips into his throat as I say, “They’re beautiful.”
He snorts. “Hardly.”
I pull back to grip his chin between my fingers and force his gaze to meet my own. “Every one of these scars is proof that you lived through something you probably shouldn’t have. Wounds don’t become scars unless you survive.” I press my lips to his. “They’re beautiful.”

“What the hell is this, Rook?” Nik asked her, holding the glass she had passed him in front of his blue eyes, looking at it suspiciously.
“Don’t look at it that way! It’s my signature drink!” She happily said, sitting on the couch next to him.
“It’s bright pink.” He swirled it watching how the liquid inside shimmered. “And sparkly.”
“Edible glitter.” He arched one brow. “Don’t be such a baby! You drink colourful and sparkling drinks at the ‘Graveyard Shift’ all the time.” She pointed out, rolling her eyes.
“Yeah, cause Garrus loves them. I’m happy enough with my snake tequila.”
“Just try the damn drink, Ryder.”
“Fine, fine…” He brought the glass towards his lips, noticing her expectanted gaze on him, taking a sip. Instantly his mouth twisted in disgust and his eyes widened in horror. “God, that’s terrible! It’s like drinking 'My little pony’!” He stood up and rushed to the kitchen, grabbing a bottle of tequila and drinking a long swig of it.
Alex narrowed her eyes trying to act offended until, seeing him throw the drink in the sink like it was the most dangerous venom in the world, she burst into laughter.
“Are you trying to kill me? You know there are easier ways, right? Less… Disgusting ways.” He said with a nauseated grimace.
“Don’t be dramatic, Nik.” She stood up and went to the kitchen with him, hugging him from behind. “You know I love you.”
“Honestly, Rook, you have a very strange way of showing it.” She chuckled and stood on her tiptoes to kiss his nape.
“At least I show them.” She whispered in his ear, her breath ticklish on his skin.
“That was a low blow, Alex.” He turned and picked her up, sitting her on the counter.
“I know.” She said with a mischievous smile.
“You’re very cruel.” Nik muttered, holding her waist.
“Yes, it keeps me young.” She joked and he chuckled before kissing her deeply. Her arms on his neck and her legs around his hips, pulling him closer.
“You want to see how much I love you?” His mouth kissing her shoulder moving the neckline of her top out of the way.
“Show me.” Before she knew, he was holding her in his arms, effortlessly carrying her towards the bedroom.
