The Weirdly Manipulative Narrative of BBCM Characters

Let's start with the character that is the easiest to explain and whose sympathetic narrative is the easiest to break from:-

#1 - Uther

Part 1 - Ygraine

Uther starts off as this big bad villain who every viewer hates. He kills magic users, is a tyrant, emotionally manipulates Arthur, is a narcissist, a natural liar and so forth.

Then we get to know more about his past and realise that he's just a broken man. Someone who lost his wife due to magic and couldn't handle the loss so he chose the only path he understood as a warrior king- violence and bloodshed.

“ She was my heart, my soul. And you took her from me. ”

But here's the thing.

Uther cheated on his wife.

“I loved your mother. There isn't a day that passes where I don't wish that she were still alive. I could never have done anything to hurt her.”

Yeah, sure Uther.

Now, I'm not saying that Uther didn't care for Ygraine. But cheating (and barely showing any guilt over it later) is not the action of a man who "loved" his wife. Considering the fact that Gorlois was clueless about the infidelity, we have to assume that Ygraine was too.

To prove my point further, let's consider the fact how we all know how much Uther valued tradition and arranged marriages. Is it so hard to assume that he would've married Ygraine for her family standing and pedigree rather than "true love"? Especially since he was a new king who had just conquered all of Camelot.

"Your father betrayed me."

So, then why was he so angry at her death? Why did he remember her so fondly? Why did he always call her the one he loved?

The same reason Jane Seymour was the only one Henry VIII truly loved.

Because she gave him a male heir.

"I'm sorry Arthur. Your father has deceived you as he deceived me."

Like I said, this doesn't mean that Uther didn't love her at all. The pain he feels about her death shows that he obviously did.

But a lot of his pain also comes from guilt.

Ygraine probably lived her last moments feeling the fear that she was going to die, sorrow that she would not get to see her son grow up and betrayed over what fate her husband helped write for her.

"Those few seconds I held you were the most precious of my life."

The most precious moment of her life was also the one tinged with the most sadness.

Uther was not some tragic Romeo. Instead, he was the Othello that let himself be his own downfall. But what sets him apart from his Shakespearean counterpart, what truly makes him the villain is what he did next.

“You showed yourself to be a man of honour. You inherited that trait from your mother.”

Uther destroyed Ygraine's life, her friend's life, her legacy, her kingdom.

Ygraine is shown to be sympathetic to magic from the way Nimueh and Morgause describe her. But he turned her death into a cause of war, killing thousands in the process.

He tore down homes for the magic he used to create his own. Kills children for the sake of the one he sired. He not only rages but actively lies and manipulates as he did with Balinor. He spread propagandas and used Ygraine's death as emotional fodder.

He got Gorlois killed in his fight of hatred, Nimueh's life destroyed, Vivianne to have to hide one of her daughters and Gaius to lose his love and watch people he cares for die. These were all people Ygraine knew and was most probably friends with.

Her brother Tristan was killed and Agravaine reduced to a snivelling villain who Uther barely tried to hold any correspondence with as far as we knew. You could say it was because Uther didn't trust him but the very reason that was true was because Uther sacrificed Ygraine and then had the audacity to blame innocent people for it.

He lied about her sacrifice to not only her subjects but also her son, dishonouring her life and cheapening her death.

No matter how much you try, you can never show Uther in any way, shape or form as "sympathetic". The death of the mother during childbirth was quite a common thing during that time, regardless of magic. How that can be used as a reason or justification for literal GENOCIDE is beyond me.

The Seymour manor was a big, illustrious household that has been around since Jacobean times, and it was big enough to fit the big family alongside the staff, made of gold, pastel colours and with some rooms renovated with the style of the era, having Baroque, Rococo and Regency styles spread all over the house. Jesse loved his house and was his safe place for a long time.

Family

Mother: Alice Seymour, neé Bulstrode

A shy, reserved and quiet woman, she was from a minor pureblood family who was in need of wealth to widen their prestige, and with Alice, named after Queen Victoria’s most beautiful daughter, Princess Alice of Hesse and by Rhine, for she was as beautiful, with golden curls and sweet blue eyes, she quickly enamoured her future husband, Albert Seymour, and the two of them married soon enough at the age of 20, a succesfull marriage that ended up in eight childre, though her last child, whom she was going to name Christopher, died of influenza at the age of four months, which made her more protective of her only son Jesse.

She ensured her daughters married someone of prestige that they liked well enough and thus made her a Grandmother of the Wizarding World.

Father: Albert Seymour

A rich, handsome and newly pureblood man, he was extroverted, intelligent and had a vision that put him ahead of everyone else. He was sorted into Gryffindor and soon fell in love with his future wife, Alice Bulstrode, whom he courted since the age of fifteen and married soon after graduating, a successful marriage that cured slowly Alice’s speech problems as they grew closer and the pregnancies grew more frequent. He thought that his baby daughter Julia would be the last, but fearing for his son, he asked Alice for one last child, a boy, so they’d have a spare spare were something to happen to Adelaide or Jesse. A son, Christopher, was born, but he was highly sickly and Alice was by then thirty-three. Her body was not the same, after 16 years of constant pregnancies, and soon gave up after the boy contracted influenza, and decided that it was time to place their trust on their firstborn daughter and only son.

Sister nº1: Adelaide Seymour

Intelligent, pragmatic, witty and bold, Adelaide was the firstborn daughter, and, for a long time, the heir to their fortune should Alice not sire a boy, and thus was educated accordingly, and as two more sisters came, she got more clear that she’d be the their... until her brother was born. She never resented him for it, though and helped in his education, and was the one to remove his speech problems later in life. She was a Ravenclaw and eight years older than Jesse. She became a Lesgislator at the Ministry.

Sister nº2: Blanca Seymour

Equally beautiful, shy, aloof and with a sweet demeanour, she was sorted into Hufflepuff and was one of Jesse’s favourite sisters, and he related easily to her, and despite her being six years older than him, the two of them kept a close bond. She later became a tutor for pureblood children

Sister nº3: Clementine Seymour

Smart, beautiful, corageous, ambitious and cunning, she was the first of the famous Seymour sisters to be sorted into Slytherin and chased away the bullies of his sisters and brother, earning a reputation. She later became a Hit Witch and was four years older than Jesse.

Sister nº4: Dana Seymour

The very image of her sister, Dana had an ethereal beauty, and was as cunning, loyal and highly ambitious, if not more than Clementine, She was very much her father’s daughter and overprotective of the youngest sisters and would become Chief Warlock, and was two years younger than Jesse.

Sister nº5: Ellen Seymour

Bold, corageous, independent and always knowing what she wanted, she was sorted into Gryffindor and played Quidditch as a Keeper, she was one of Jesse’s references as a child and always admired her, wishing to be more like her, despite being four years younger than him.

Sister nº6: Nimueh Seymour

Lively, vivacious, cheerful and optimist, with a sweet and loving nature, she grew up as the baby of the family, especially after the death of baby Christopher, overprotected and mostly in the company of her eldest sisters and her brother.

In that moment, she finally noticed him

They chatted often and got to know the other, and she often flirted with him, making him blush easily, and he helped her adapt at Hogwarts and the language, and he opened up about his family. In their sixth year, he expressed his feelings and wish to court her in the annual Christmas party Lady Gray threw and both of them started courting instantly.

They got married two years after graduating and soon after, their first child, a daughter, would be born, and four more would follow.

Nadia was dearly loved by the Seymours and became an honorary member in no time, stealing everyone’s hearts, as well as Jesse would do with the Erblands.

They lived a happy, fulfilled and loving marital life, supportive of each other and their children.

Both boys found amusing and curious how similar they were: both with a shy nature, struggled to speak and had their own ways to vent, alongside with feisty sisters and falling in love with mysterious Ravenclaw women, both boys bonded and became fast friends, often joking that they were the twins, not Jim and Ethel.

Lyle Astor ( @cursebreakerfarrier )

Lyle and Jesse were both rather similar too, though Lyle didn’t struggle with speeches and could come out of his shell more often, but was also shy and had a tendency to blush rather easily. The boys were often mistaken as brothers, thing that amused them both. They respected each other very much and were always a part of each other’s lives

Lysander Mercury ( @slytherindisaster )

Though very different from each other, Lysander helped Jesse with his confidence and speech problems, as well as to wind down and have some fun and even cause some mischief. He was the one who introduced him to some poetry and Quidditch, and Jesse vowed to repay him for it. Though he had to glare and smack him on the back of his head for staring at his sisters

Maxwell Pembroke ( @unfortunate-arrow )

Maxwell helped Jesse be a better Quidditch player and to get in shape, bonding over having younger sisters and being raised by matriarchs. They were fast friends and even after Hogwarts, Jesse supported his friend by going to his matches and cheering for him.

Galen Stagg ( @cursebreakerfarrier )

During his training as Mazoologist, he’d befriend this acquaintance and fellow Mazoologist Galen and bond over many things and exchange tales of their beloved ones, and Jesse’s money would be a great help for him to buy his sanctuary and would work with the Staggs for a long time, both being great friends as adults.

He struggled to keep up with dense and heavy subjects, but thankfully, Nadia was there to help him

During many years, as everyone noticed that Jesse spent time with girls in a ‘non-manly way’, they picked on him, calling him a ‘sissy’

When he walks with Nimueh in his arms, every elder woman and mother come in to him because, ya know, world’s biggest female magnet (a handsome young man with a baby in his arms)
