when I look for new clothes it’s 99% of the time because I have a very specific idea of an article of clothing that I’d like, but I find that most times my online searching inevitably lead me to shein or shein-like sites, which is so annoying. like, they’ve had to have stolen the design from *somewhere* you know? and I’d like to not contribute to absolutely horrendous worker conditions and consumption landfills etc etc, thanks.

Idk why people think it's funny to buy shit from shien or temu or whatever slavery-corp is popular at the time just to video themselves laughing at the quality of the products. It's badly made because it's unrelentingly shoved through a production line for a few pennies each garment- this isn't fucking "content" and honestly these rich influencers should feel ashamed to openly admit that they're buying from companies that force their workers into slavery conditions.

thinking about how the rapture-and-bliss…… isn’t really hope. or maybe it is, but it’s hope corrupted, perverted. because it doesn’t give seb and dev hope, only fantasy. it’s escapism. that’s not what hope is, not the same hope that convinced hayward and paige to birth a god, not the same hope that makes carpenter work for a better world despite all her cynicism.
hope in its truest form is a driving, radicalizing force. what the man in the walls sells is the opposite. its victims literally live in a dream. it’s hope stripped of action. it’s forced optimism to the point of destructiveness. and it just drives home the point that no gods in this universe — the biggest metaphors for oppressive systems and capitalism and overconsumption — can take hold of anything good without corrupting it. because a god must feed.

In January 2021 there were less than 200 tumblr employees (source is the tumblr staff member on the guy fieri arg discord server who was confirmed to be tumblr staff. Also I think another staff member posted it on their blog around that time). Unless they’ve mass hired people (it sounded like the size of the team was getting smaller at the time so unlikely) the content moderation team is extremely small. It’s definitely a significant issue that there’s not enough people to run this website properly, but it’s a staffing issue, not a not caring about or agreeing with bigotry issue. That’s also why they rely on terrible ai software to review images and blanket bans of certain tags. There’s straight up not enough people to actually review reports, however if something high profile happens they can act quickly. (Sorry this is a long ask, I just feel this is important information in any discussion about how tumblr is run)
yeah that's fair, it's good to have all the information available. it doesn't change the fact that tumblr has pretty much always had problems with moderation though, like it's never been good at handling harassment and hate speech as far as i remember (and i've used this site since 2011/2012), and that's why i can't in good conscience view tumblr as the like. friendly quirky little family community it markets itself as. i respect that it's not easy to run a website, but it has genuine problems with dealing with those issues (as most social media do) and there's not really anything that can excuse that, and i respect why people are upset about it. having been on the receiving end of both targeted mass harassment and hate speech myself, and having received absolutely no help or support from tumblr when i tried to report it, i can't help but feel pretty fed up with how they manage things in that department. i work in retail, so i get that some issues are due to staffing shortages and the limitations of the company and how it's run, so i don't blame individual tumblr staff members for that any more than i'd blame any individual employee of a company for that company's failures unless they were clearly personally responsible, but at the same time i strongly believe in doing the best you can by your fellow human beings and working to prevent harm wherever possible, and how tumblr handles harassment and hate speech falls way short of that.

i think the vast majority of people (in the culture i live in) are too removed from the origins of our food, i am very pro eating meat but i think we need to appreciate that it came from a living being and be thankful for what they have given us

anyway the beauty of not being straight-sized is that literally nothing i could buy from shein or any other fast fashion sites would fit me, so i’m guilt free in that regard

I changed my Firefox default search engine to not-Google (I went with DuckDuckGo) since 1) they will no longer include Canadian news sources and 2) all you get are sponsored results and AI garbage anyway. It was very easy; go to Settings in Firefox for Android and Default Search is right at the top.
I realize that my Android phone is supporting Google as well, especially since it's a Pixel, but I still think the Apple ecosystem is even more oppressive...

Please don’t @ me next week when I get an updated kindle during prime day
It’s just been so gratifying to read again, even if it’s on a device, but I think I’m reading again BECAUSE it’s on a device and the friction for task-switching is very low
And sometimes the glare off my phone/iPad is too much for my poor eyes, and I’m looking forward to devouring a bunch of books on the beach in September and it will be so much easier to pack if I just bring a kindle instead of like six or eight books (plus my eyes are so delicate I can’t read a book outside and it gives me a headache to read with my (prescription for seeing blurry far away things) sunglasses, for obvious reasons, but if I can have a matte screen with the colors inverted…!)
I just hate Amazon so much and I am so mad to be supporting them but they also have really good e-reader technology and they will be dirt cheap soon AND they’ll give me an extra 20% off for sending my ancient fire tablet to them, so
UGH!!!!!

BOYCOTTING FOR PALESTINE
The Official BDS Boycott Targets
The Updated List is Below:
EUROVISION. IT IS IN OUR TOP PRIORITY TO BOYCOTT EUROVISION
Tumblr media
Consumer Boycotts - a complete boycott of these brands
Axa
Puma
Carrefour
HP
Cevron
Caltex
Israeli produce
Re/max
Ahava
Texaco
Siemens
Sodastream
Organic Boycott Targets - boycotts not initiated by BDS but still complete boycott of these brands
Macdonald's
Dominos
Papa Johns
Burger King
Pizza Hut
Wix
Divestments and exclusion - pressure governments, institutions, investment funds, city councils, etc. to exclude from procurement contracts and investments and to divest from these
Elbit Systems
CAF
Volvo
CAT
Barclays
JCB
intel
HD Hyundai
TKH Security
HikVision
Pressure - boycotts when reasonable alternatives exist, as well as lobbying, peaceful disruptions, and social media pressure.
Google
Amazon
AirBnb
Booking.Com
Expedia
Disney
Teva
Here are some companies that strongly support Israel (but are not Boycott targets). There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and boycotting is a political strategy - not a moral one. If you did try to boycott every supporter of Israel you would struggle to survive because every major company supports Israel (as a result of attempting to keep the US economy afloat), that being said, the ones that are being boycotted by masses and not already on the organic boycott list are coloured red.
