On This Day in F1: February 23

Present: Testing Day 3

History: 1958 Juan Manuel Fangio Kidnapped

February 23rd was the last day of testing and once more red flagged due to a drain cover. Instead of 2 sessions, there was one long session with drivers switching off halfway through.

With testing over, there’s only a few days until the first race of the year. The Bahrain Grand Prix will be on Saturday March 1st.

In 1958, February 23rd was not marked by the end of testing, but rather a kidnapping.

In 1957, President Batista of Cuba established the Cuban Grand Prix as a non-Formula One race. Despite it being a non-Formula One race, many F1 drivers did travel to Cuba for the race. The 1957 running had been won by Juan Manuel Fangio.

However, when Fangio returned to Cuba for the second running of the race, it was not as successful as his 1957 run. During practice, Fangio had set the fastest times and was the favorite to win. But on February 23rd - the day before the Grand Prix - Fangio was kidnapped by two men from Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement.

The intention was that Fangio's kidnapping would force Batista to cancel the Cuban Grand Prix and embarrass Batista's government. Despite the kidnapping of Fangio - the 1957 F1 World Champion - Batista ordered that the race happen while the police searched for Fangio. To ensure the race happened, Batista set up:

Roadblocks at intersections

Guards for all airports - private and commercial

Guards for the other drivers

Fangio was handed to the Argentine embassy after the race was finished and Batista's inability to find Fangio's captors was a sign that he was losing his power.

In an interview with the New York Times, Fangio asserted that his kidnappers had treated him kindly.

Instead of Fangio, Stirling Moss would go on to win the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix, but it remains a race marred by tragedy. Cuban driver, Armando Garcia Cifuentes was driving a Ferrari and was inexperienced. Six laps into the race, Cifuentes crashed into the crowd killing seven people and injuring 31 others.

Oates is a gun that Dante stabbed with the arrow out of curiosity it spurs a soul much to his shock. Dante often (reluctantly) puts the now sentient gun on hitman duties although he was often the one being held instead of his Stand. On one mission he and a rather gruesome fellow were sent on an assassination mission to kill the Joestar Group who were on their Egypt, there they successfully shot and killed Mahir El-Kahir (magician’s red) though it fled the scene when Thomas Manuel Polnareff (silver chariot) killed his partner and avenged Mahir.

After a couple more fails Dante decided to lock it up in a box and there he laid for the majority of the final battle so that he could dispose of him after, he got picked up after it by John and later sent to the Fleetwood Foundation. Years Later, it was brought to the town of Morioh via delivery because they thought a gun would be able to get input on an escaped Stand using eagle.

It hasn’t reported back since a small run in with a policeman and the Fleetwoods are currently on the way to retrieve him.

For an object that exists to injure, Oates is surprisingly not that. Often times he’s shooting people because he’s required to which some see as ironic because of it’s larger than life personality (though it by no means has the wannabe casanovaness of his Stand) and surprisingly huge ego. It talks through telepathy which exists as compensation for not having a physical way to talk and being unable to talk via the Stand.

[ Out of Touch ] mainly exists to wield Oates post-it gaining sentience, it’s considered a separate-ish entity from Oates despite being its Stand as its often seen trying to woo women despite the gun’s objections.

OoT’s main ability is to make magic-Stand bullets for it’s user to shoot out, they’re often the “Red Metal Hot” variety though it can do more. It’s often a 50/50 challenge to get those bullets hit it’s target due to the C in range and the sometimes atrocious aim of Out of Touch.

Because it’s a Stand, it is unseen by non-Stand users which means that Yes people do just see a floating gun that shoots invisible bullets that Injures people.

A probably very long ramble about a video game concept I call "Claire de la Lune".

Uhhh @otherworldlyoddities45 @wishxmexwell @breakcoreboxcat bullying you all into reading this sorry if it sucks

Very quick exposition on a game mechanic: The game has a mechanic called "filling your heart". You can only get the best ending if your heart is at least 3/4 full. You fill your heart by having positive interactions with NPCs, and by befriending people. This is also a game of choices, and all choices affect the ending. The most important choices will be highlighted in green, while non-story changing choices will be red (you see Manuel's two colours are red and green). Important things to interact with/minigames will be a purple crescent moon, while things that trigger random comments with have a yellow crescent moon I DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE IT HOMESTUCK I SWEAR

Ok so like the game itself starts with a cutscene of Manuel and Selene walking down the street. Manuel tells her about the welshman who went to the moon and found out it was made of cheese and brought a bit back down with him. The cutscene closes off on Manuel saying "It's just a story, so don't tell it at school." and Selene laughing. Manuel wakes up at his desk, which is littered with papers, the one in front is a missing poster for Selene, but off to the side is a note from the company he works at "Blight Field & Associates" (Spoiler alert: It's a cover for The Bigger Fish, I want to do more with them and it makes sense for them to have fingers in a lot of pies as it were). He gets up and goes to leave work. In this world, everyone wears a mask, more for aesthetics than for any canon reason. You get an opportunity to look around the town where Manuel lives after he is stopped by someone who only goes by O who explains the basic controls which confuses Manuel since from his perspective O is literally just talking to him, but the explanation is for the player. I like fourth wall breaks like that. Once you get to Selene's room he meets O again, who asks if he really wants to find his daughter, like really really wants to. You can choose yes or no, if you choose no the game ends right there but if you choose yes O opens a portal to the World of Flowers and tells him to go in.

He does, and the first person he meets is a small person wreathed in colourful flowers named Dahlia. She explains she only shows up when something unfortunate is about to take place, then notes that since something unfortunate already happened to him it probably won't be that bad. She goes to leave and you have a very important choice to make, whether to ask her to stay with you or not. O even pops up in the corner as an orchid flower reminding you to keep your heart full. If you ask her to stay with you, she offers to take you into town to meet some people. She takes you to meet her friend Poppy, who runs an apothecary and asks you to find some bottles for her that she "dropped". Once your bring them back, you are alone with Poppy. She gets a bit flirtatious and attempts to get Manuel to stay with her. During this, her form shifts to a faceless woman, which makes Manuel panic. You then get the choice to stay or go. If you stay, the game ends. If you go, you leave the shop and meet Dahlia again who explains that Poppies can be dangerous, and she regrets leaving you alone with her (if you chose to let Dahlia leave you just don't get this dialogue) I do need to add another bit here but for now it's just you walk with Dahlia for a bit before Manuel swears he sees Selene in some trees and runs over, only to find it's O, ready to take him to another world, explaining that what he does in the worlds is important but not explaining further.

The next world is the World of Candy! He begins to head into a city by himself but is knocked over by a guy named Aaron (he's based off Aero bars) who is on roller skates. Another important choice: if you want to, Manuel muses about how he used to roller skate and he always wanted to make time to do so with Selene. Aaron offers to take him later after Aaron does his shift at a cafe. Again you can say yes or no, and again this is an important decision. If you say yes, he was to go to the White Rabbit later, maybe he could get something to eat before they head off. If you say no, Aaron looks a little dejected and skates off to work. Either choice you made you still have a whole day to waste, so you get to explore a bit. You meet a person in the park, Sal (saltwater taffy) who tells Manuel he's still young and has plenty of time. He then offers to play checkers with him, the prize being a story. Of course, you can say no to him, but if you say yes two things can happen. If you win, he tells you the story of Chang'e, or the toad in the moon. If he wins, Manuel tells him the story of when creatures of the night stole the moon and put it in a bog. You can play as many times as you want if you lose so you can hear Sal tell his story. Once you are done playing, you can head to the White Rabbit. (If you chose not to play you just skip right to this, and miss out on filling your heart). Only two people work at White Rabbit, Aaron and Vanny (Her full name is Vanilla, and she's inspired by White Rabbits. They are a Chinese candy I adore they are so good please trust me.) Aaron is a waiter and does drinks, while Vanny is a chef. Aaron roller skates inside because he's just quirky like that. You get the unimportant choice of hot chocolate, apple pie, or nothing. Once you have your snack, Manuel goes off roller skating with Aaron. Once they are done, Aaron heads off home and O comes back, telling Manuel only has two worlds left then he can see his daughter again. Manuel asks why he has to go so far and O just looks very uncomfortable.

The next world is the World of Insects. Manuel walks out into the middle of what seems to be a rave which causes him to have a complete sensory overload and just shut down, unable to move or talk just trying so hard to shut off his eyes and ears so he can readjust. Someone leads him out, and as he gets his bearings again he finds it's a punk ant named Pon. They give Manuel a bottle of water and let him calm down. Once he recovers, you can either thank Pon or not. If you don't, they ask if you are ok but eventually leave. If you thank them, they assure you it's no problem but what were you doing there if you didn't like loud noises? Here you can choose to say someone told you to go through a portal (Pon responds with "Yeah people do that") or you can say that you just wandered in. This choice isn't too important. Anyways once you two are done talking Pon gives you a pink and green button/pin and goes back inside. You can go explore this place now, eventually meeting a praying mantis named Carnival sitting on a bench. If you have the button from Pon they mention that that's actually their cousin (no they never elaborate on this) and is Pon doing well? If you don't have the pin they offer you a business card for themself advertising "life disposal" In both cases you can keep talking to them and they explain as they work as a last resort for people. They offer this to you. If you accept, the game ends, but the cutscene you get is Manuel running down a hallway towards Selene but it glitches so you don't know if he reached her or not. If you decline they tell you to "live a long life then. I'm always here"

Manuel goes off, but is stopped by a pair of human-looking twins who whistle. This is important: You can follow them or not follow them. If you don't, O stops you and leads you to the next world. If you do however, they lead you into a maze (This lets you bypass the last section) you simply play hide and seek with them in the maze. Once Manuel catches them he finds himself in the White Void (where the Space Worms are created and live when not exploring) where he encounters the Matron Worm who asks him why he is here. You don't get any choices in this segment, Manuel just talks to the Matron Worm about what he's been through. Once they are done talking, Manuel turns around to find O. (We'll come back to this in a second)

*Please note I am debating actually having this in the game* The last world is the World of Puppets. It's full of dolls, all except for two "humans", Daymen and Sharon. They are both usually represented as shadows when not talking to Manuel. not much happens in this segment, honestly it's quite weak for now, I just wanted a reference to songbound (Daymen and Sharon are both songbound who don't fit quite well in the main story)

Anyways! Time for the endings. if you have a full enough heart, you get the good ending. During the final encounter with O, they ask Manuel one last time if he wants to find Selene. They make him confirm it three times before they sigh and tell him to look through the doorway. Once Manuel enters, the screen goes black. A fuzzy cutscene begins where Selene runs up to Manuel and he scoops her up in his arms, touching their foreheads together. The screen fades to black, then the credits roll.

If you have a sort of full heart, you get the in-between ending. O refuses to tell Manuel where Selene is on the ground that he didn't listen to them. He's sent back home, and the game ends on the same scene if began on.

If your heart is empty or just barely full, you get the bad ending. O tells him to go through the door, only to find a giant monstrous mass of tentacles that eats him.

You see, Selene was killed by Manuel's bosses because he wasn't working "hard enough". She was the only way they could really hurt him. O just doesn't want to tell him that.

That's Claire de la Lune! I would really appreciate feedback this is just a baseline and obviously not a full game, it needs a lot more fleshing out but wooo!

These ones can be "Marion" instead of "Mariana" "Karol" instead of "Carolina"

I guess you would also like to know the nicknames of each one of the names I provided you with, or maybe even last names. If you want me to dedicate some posts to that, let me know! For the moment, I hope all of these names are useful for your O.Cs and fanfics. 😉

I used to be a huge fan of European style Power Metal. Much of it bores me these days, but Wind Rose is the exception. With a lower ranged vocalist and epic songs about dwarves, they’re one of the greatest new power metal bands out there.

Okay, I will finally write out my thoughts on ✨Hamilton✨.

IT WAS FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!

I think I actually saw a lot of the cast members going in the stage door, because I was ridiculously early and just hanging around outside. The cast I saw at the Victoria Palace Theatre on Friday night were a lot of understudies, but they were amazing.

The acting

Alex Sawyer as Hamilton had so much swagger compared to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s version (sorry Lin…). He expressed Hamilton’s ambition and cockiness perfectly, getting us to laugh at that, and he also managed the emotional moments.

Jake Halsey-Jones as Philip was hilarious, for example he made a big show of crouching to hug the adults, and he Naruto ran up the stairs

Ashley J Daniels as Thomas Jefferson really engaged and hyped up the audience, for example he got us to clap along.

Joel Montague as King George was also very funny, he held the end note of one of his songs while he pointed his staff all the way around the audience.

Not to be negative, but I didn’t find Shan Ako’s Eliza quite as well-acted. Neither her scream when Philip died nor her gasp at the end had much emotional impact for me.

The singing and rapping

Maya Britto as Angelica was an absolute powerhouse in Satisfied, and exuded that “take no shit” vibe in The Schuyler Sisters and The Reynolds Pamphlet.

Emile Ruddock as Hercules Mulligan knocked it out of the park with his raps, he somehow managed to put so much impact behind every word.

Roshani Abbey opened her mouth as Mariah Reynolds and blew me away, her voice was so rich and seductive.

The choreography

The battle sequences were masterfully done. How is it possible to give something so tragic such beauty?

The reversal of the choreography from Helpless during Satisfied was literally astonishing to witness live.

The duels were very impactful, with the ensemble member holding the bullet and being carried in slow motion towards the victim.

The big numbers where everyone on stage was dancing together made my silly neurodivergent brain tingle!

The staging, lighting, and props

I loved the lighting as if there was an open door lit from within when Hamilton asked Simon-Anthony Rhodes’ Burr to help write essays in Non-Stop.

The use of the balcony was really clever, providing dimension to the set and giving emphasis to the background action.

The dual turntable, oh my god! There was one moment when Hamilton was inside the outer circle, while Angelica and Eliza stood still on it as it turned, and the circle stopped moving them at exactly the right two moments for them to talk with Hamilton. (Also props to the actors, especially the ensemble, for staying balanced while they moved and danced on the turntable in action!)

The use of unnatural lighting colours at key moments, like purple and red, really juxtaposed with the browns of the set and got me to take notice of it.

I genuinely gasped when they brought out an extra staircase on wheels to go in the centre just before the interval. I wasn’t expecting it (despite having seen the Disney+ film), so it thrilled me.

I loved how Shan Ako as Eliza actually set the letters on fire in Burn! As there was minimal action on the rest of the stage, it really brought the focus to her. Oh my god and I’ve just realised that the smoke blurring our view could have been the same way her tears blurred hers.

Shoutout to Manaia Glassey-Ohlson as Washington and Simon-Anthony Rhodes as Burr as well! While nothing specific about their performances stood out to me, they were both still incredible in their roles.

One thing that did confuse me though - there was barely any clapping at the end? They did one curtain call and we gave them a standing ovation, but that was all?? The lights came on and the audience up and left after that. Like come on, at least a couple more bows! Honestly, the performance deserved more than that!

Overall, I just want to watch it again! There was so much going on, meaning I know I missed a lot of it, and it’s the kind of show which you could keep discovering more about. Don’t be a cynic, in this case the hype is well deserved!

The Beach Luxury Club - Sharm: Capodanno '24 con Alex Belli e Federico Fashion Style… E il 3 gennaio 2024 New Year's Reload Show con Umberto Smaila

Le feste di fine anno sono un bel momento per rilassarsi ovunque e comunque. Al The Beach Luxury Club di Sharm El Sheikh, presso Domina Coral Bay, il programma per la fine del 2023 e l'inizio del 2024 è però davvero imperdibile, per chi vuol oziare sotto il sole di giorno, assaggiare piatti d'eccellenza la sera…e la notte godersi musica e divertimento con gli amici.

Ogni sera succede qualcosa, grazie ad un calendario di eventi davvero imbattibile. Si parte il 24 dicembre 2023 con un Xmas Dinner Show accompagnato da live music tutto da vivere. E il pranzo di Natale? Al The Beach diventa un Brunch Baywatch Party, ancora accompagnato da live music, per non perdere il ritmo del divertimento. La sera tra Natale e Santo Stefano, il 25/12, ecco uno scatenato Xmas Red Party, accompagnato da un dj set tutto da ballare. Andiamo avanti: venerdì 29 dicembre alla musica live pensa un gruppo d'eccezione, la Shake Point Band.

E per Capodanno? Il top club fondato da Manuel Dallori per l'ultima notte del 2023 propone due appuntamenti diversi: nella storica cornice di The Beach, a due passi dal mare, va in scena la proposta più soft, dedicata a sole 80 persone: è una cena a lume di candela, in un'atmosfera romantica e rilassante. L'immensa Domina Coral Bay Arena, una struttura temporanea e panoramica da ben 800 persone, è invece la location dedicata a chi ha voglia di ballare fino alba con dinner show, party e dj set. Sul palco tanti protagonisti d'eccezione: la band è quella di Alex Belli, modello, attore e personaggio tv davvero molto amato (GF, Isola dei Famosi) mentre a presentare e a fare spettacolo ci pensa Federico Fashion Style, celeberrimo e decisamente chiacchierato hair stylist. Con loro anche un'altra professionista dello spettacolo come Letizia Saquella, pole dancer vincitrice di molte competizioni internazionali.

Sarebbe già abbastanza, ma The Beach Luxury Club per l'inizio del 2024 ha pensato anche a tutti coloro che non si sono goduti a pieno l'ultima di notte dell'anno perché in viaggio… o semplicemente vogliono festeggiare ancora.

Ecco quindi il White Brunch dell'1 gennaio '24, con dj set e musica d'eccellenza. Non solo: il 3 gennaio sul palco della Domina Coral Bay Arena tornano dopo tanti anni Umberto Smaila e la sua band, protagonisti musicale di un New Year's Reload Show tutto da vivere, come sempre eccellente anche dal punto di vista culinario. Capaci di far cantare e scatenare chiunque, simbolo del divertimento più spensierato, Umberto Smaila e i suoi musicisti sul palco creano semplicemente magia.

Buenas dias Santiago

Thursday 23rd November 2023

Yesterday we travelled from our back packer hovel in San Pedro de Atacama to Calama to catch our flight to the Chilean capital of Santiago. The taxi to the airport turned up 45 minutes late so I wasn't in the best of moods as we eventually left back packer central behind and set off on the 60 mile trip across the Atacama desert to the airport at Calama. The Atacama desert is the driest non-polar desert in the world and has been used as a practice area for Mars landings as it most resembles the Martian environment apparently! Some of the scenery on the journey was spectacular, as were the views from the plane as we flew over the spine of the Andes on our way to Santiago.

When we arrived in Santiago our plane was held out on the tarmac for over half an hour before we were eventually bussed to the terminal with me having to use my somewhat basic Spanish to respond to our drivers frantic calls demanding to know where we were as we were late. Despite the panic we eventually met the most miserable bugger we've come across since we landed in South America and he drove us to our hotel in the commercial centre of Santiago. Needless to say he didn't get a tip so I expect he was even more miserable when he got home!

The hotel is well located so we went exploring, had dinner and a few drinks and organised a city tour for today.

We were up and ready in the foyer of our hotel 10 minutes before the guide was supposed to pick us up at 7.50am. He eventually turned up at 8.30am and was very blasé when challenged about being late. "oh, you're in South America now. What do you expect?“. He'd already lost me by then, I was ticking. We then spent the next hour buggering about picking up other tourists from other hotels... tick, tick, tick. He then proceeded to take us very slowly round a few streets in the centre of Santiago. The slowest and most boring tour I've ever been on. Three Brazilians just left at one point, without paying, never to be seen again. I was feeling exactly the same but MM insisted that we stayed the course. At 1pm he said "that's it, finito". A young Australian girl said "what about Bella Vista". At this point his English suddenly became very poor and he appeared not to understand. The young girl persisted and I supported her - tick, tickeddy, tick, tick. Fortunately, a Canadian woman had the flyer with her that supported our position and it transpired that the lazy bugger had missed out about half of the tour. Tick, tick, tick - not happy. He now had nowhere to go, so he spent the next 2 hours doing the things he'd missed but he'd lost the crowd and the atmosphere wasn't great at all. The worst tour I've ever been on, can't wait for the feedback request!

Having said all that Santiago is a nice surprise. After all the 3rd world places we've been to over the past 3 weeks or so it's nice to be somewhere recognisable. Much more like a European city with proper infrastructure, cars that don't look like they've taken part in wacky races, traffic lights, pavement cafes and bars, parks and wide avenues. A pleasant change for a couple of days. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of Chile compares.

After the tour we took the metro red line (very clean, efficient and cheap) from Manuel Montt to Universidad de Santiago to book our bus tickets to and from Valparaiso on the coast, where we'll spend a night before returning to Santiago to take the 10hr overnight bus to Pucon in Patagonia where we'll spend a couple of nights before we head into Argentina.

Weather has been very warm so no need for all the cold and wet weather gear we packed yet.

It'll be good to see the sea tomorrow. We seem to have survived the altitude and the return to sea level reasonably well so hopefully the rest of the trip should be a doddle! We'll see.

Blue Beetle, le film sera là ! Le film Blue Beetle est sorti le mercredi 2 septembre 2023. Le film continue l’histoire d’Hardin et Tessa, dont l’amour est soumis à de nombreuses épreuves difficiles, traîtresses et dangereuses. Ces deux amoureux auront-ils une fin heureuse ? En attendant de savoir si le film a été acclamé par les fans, il y a de bonnes nouvelles : Blue Beetle va sortir ! Cela a été confirmé le 3 septembre 2023 par les deux stars de la série dans une vidéo postée sur le profil Instagram officiel d’Blue Beetle. Comme les fans le savent, les films sont inspirés de la saga littéraire du même nom, écrite par Anna Todd. La série Blue Beetle est composé de 4 livres.

L’intrigue du film Blue Beetle L’amour d’Hardin et Tessa est encore une fois mis à l’épreuve. Ces deux adolescents vont devoir affronter leur passé. Tessa rencontre son père après des années et décide de le prendre en charge après avoir découvert qu’il était devenu sans abri. Hardin accepte de l’héberger mais ne fait pas confiance à cet homme, convaincu qu’il cache une partie de la vérité. Mais ce n’est pas le seul obstacle. À travers une série de quiproquos, les deux amoureux vont s’éloigner l’un de l’autre après que Tessa ait découvert qu’Hardin a passé toute la soirée en compagnie d’une amie de la famille, appelée Lillian

Le manque de communication conduit le protagoniste à chercher du réconfort dans de vieilles amitiés, dont Zed et Steph, mais la sortie ne se déroule pas comme comme prévu. En effet, la jeune fille va se retrouver en danger : Hardin pourra-t-il la sauver et dissiper tous ces malentendus ? Concernant l’intrigue du film, Castille Landon, le réalisateur d’Blue Beetle nous assure qu’il sera fidèle au roman du même nom.

Le casting du film Blue Beetle : qui sera là ? Nous verrons probablement le retour de deux personnages principaux : Héro Fiennes-Tiffin et Josephine Langford, comme Hardin et Tessa, Blue Beetleivement. Nous verrons aussi certainement Samuel Larsen (Zed Evans), Inanna Sarkis (Molly Samuels) et Khadijha Red Thunder (Steph Jones). Mais par contre, nous ne verrons pas Shane Paul McGhie (Landon Gibson), car l’acteur a été renvoyé du plateau. Dylan Sprouse, dont le rôle est Trevor ne revient pas non plus.

Mais il y a aussi une nouvelle de dernière minute : d’autres acteurs ne reviendront pas dans le troisième film, d’où la nécessité d’un renouvellement. Déjà dans Blue Beetle 2, on se rend compte que le père d’Hardin n’est plus joué par Peter Gallagher (Andy Cohen pourquoi es-tu parti ?) mais par Rob Estes et que la mère de Landon n’est plus jouée par Jennifer Beals mais par Karimah Westbrook. Nous verrons également beaucoup de changements dans Blue Beetle. En commençant par Candice King et Charlie Weber : les deux acteurs ne seront plus Kim et Christian Vance.

L’actrice que nous avons appris à aimer dans The Vampire Diaries comme Caroline est enceinte de son deuxième enfant ! Sa grossesse l’empêche donc de retourner sur le plateau pour filmer Blue Beetle. Candice sera remplacée par Arielle Kebbel que nous avons déjà vu dans The Vampire Diaries: : Il s’agit de Lexi, le meilleur ami de Stefan ! Charlie sera remplacé par Stephen Moyer. Aussi Selma Blair, qui joue la mère de Tessa, est remplacée par Mira Sorvino. En plus de toutes ces modifications, il y a aussi une nouvelle arrivée : Carter Jenkins, qui jouera Robert, le potentiel amoureux de Tessa.

La raison de tous ces changements est que le fait de tourner deux films ensemble empêche aussi certains des acteurs principaux de participer à d’autres engagements professionnels ou autres.

“...there’s bad vibes in here. Bad energy,” Summer said, holding the egg. “We’ve gotta clear it up.”

“You’re sure this is a real ritual?” Asked Amina, Summer’s sister, once her fraternal twin and now her twin twin.

“It’s in my book. You put the bad energies into the egg and smash it.”

“Where did you find the egg? Our parents are vegan.”

“I borrowed it from the kids next door.”

“Don’t we typically burn sage for this type of cleansing?”

Summer rolled her eyes. “Burning sage is, like, racist or something? I don’t know! But the book says to use an egg.”

“There are non-appropriative alternatives to sage, Sum.”

Summer grunted again. “But we don’t have any of those, and we’ve got bad vibes we need to clear out.”

“This ritual isn’t from a spellbook you stole from Barnes and Noble, is it?”

Summer eyed 1001 Real Magick Spells: Love, Money, Power, a lavender tome, on her bedside table. “No. Yes.”

“This ritual isn’t approved by our coven…”

“Our coven is boring. They’re, like, a religion. Witch church. This is the real shit.” She rubbed something over the egg. “Do you think the bad energies are in the egg?” Amina shrugged. “Well, then it’s time to banish -” Summer tried to dramatically raise the egg for some book-mandated chants, but it tumbled out of her palm instead and cracked on the floor. “GODDAMNIT!” She kicked the air.

“You made the bad energies wet,” Amina said simply. Summer just groaned and stormed out the door, tracking yolk in her wake.

Manuel was easy to get onboard, which meant Laura was easy to get onboard; Emily found him in programming class, and asked him “you know about ghosts, right?” Emily knew that he had hunted a ghost with Laura, since they wouldn’t shut up about it, but Emily didn’t believe Laura - though, and she couldn’t begin to explain how this worked, she did believe Manuel?

Manuel eagerly agreed, to help keep things safe, of course, and Manuel promised to tell Laura, so that was two.

Summer was also easy, which meant Claire was easy. Emily cornered Summer at lunch, and though she had a backup plan in mind (“you’re the reason I’m a werewolf, you better help, etc etc”) Summer leapt at the chance to do “witch shit”. Claire did not, but she leapt at the chance to go with Summer, and so that was four.

Alice…

Hmm. Alice.

She needed to make her move before or after band, but Alice was first of all distracted by Maddie. Maddie was as tall as Alice, with bowl cut light brown hair and freckles; she wore an olive hoodie and jeans. Alice was, as always, in her red jacket. Alice had finally begun talking to Maddie, after much encouragement from Emily, though Emily knew why Alice was flustered by Maddie and Alice…Alice didn’t know, or chose not to know. She waited for her chance…

“You’re Alice…?” Maddie said.

“Yep, I’m Alice. Maddie?”

“Maddie.”

“Alice.”

“Yeah.”

“Yep.”

“You’re new here?”

“Yeah, we just moved up from Gates County.”

“Gates County? I’m from Centralia.”

“Gwinnett.”

“Wow.”

“Wow…” Maddie fumbled for something in her bag, and the two of them left their ‘talking’ phase. That was Emily’s window.

She came over, still thinking over her strategy. Wait, Alice would be too flustered around Maddie; Emily waved her over instead, and Alice squinted and came over - halfway there, she swiveled around and waved to Maddie, who was still looking through her bag, so Alice walked backwards a few steps before turning to face Emily. “Em?”

“There’s a pack event tonight. We’re going to a haunted house and…trying to…exorcize the spirits…with…prayer?”

“The pack.”

“Yes, not like there’s any other way to exorcize the spirits. Definitely not anything…occult-y going on here.”

“Where’s the house?”

“A couple blocks from my house. We’re holding the exorcism at 6, maybe 6:30 if anyone’s running late.”

“Alright…”

“You can confirm for the exorcism on Discord, it’s in the events.”

“Alright…”

Dr. Valley - her first name was Jacqueline, and she went by Jack - was an older woman with sandy hair, a worn face, and a long, white jacket. According to Sjöberg, she was a doctor on the surface - namely, part of the campus’ medical staff. She had an “office” down here, but it was just a bed and a table of equipment set apart from a stone chamber by carpeted room dividers, which she presided over the couple days a week she was usually in. Today, that was an exam.

“This teeth situation, it’s normal?” She grunted.

“All my life,” Eliza replied.

Valley let down the magnifying glass. “You don’t exactly have a good medical history.”

“I was born, I went into stasis for a bit, I woke up.”

“Short and sweet. Next.”

Eliza stepped outside the “office”, where only Melissa waited in line.

“Hi,” Eliza said.

“Hi,” Melissa stepped inside, but backtracked right out. “What’d she say to you? Getting enough blood?”

“The ghost didn’t hurt me. Thanks for asking.”

“Right, the ghost you and Laura saw. How’s Laura doing?”

“What do you care about Laura?”

“I don’t,” Melissa said, stepping into the doctor’s office.

Returning to her room, Eliza found Malphas perched on her desk; Malphas told her Sjöberg wanted to speak to her, so Eliza went right back out and walked over to Sjöberg’s office.

“Miss Ortega has contacted us to ask if you would like to accompany her to a case tonight,” Sjöberg said. “Some manner of seance.”

“I’ll go help Wolfgirl. Me and Malphas will -”

“I would prefer if Malphas remained here, due to his current awkward condition. If you are to go, you must retrieve the pendant from Lensa, and you must find someone to accompany you. A member of staff.” Sjöberg said the last part more insistently.

Eliza agreed, and she found Lensa. Her pendant was off, and the goatwoman with daisies strung around her horns was leaning down by a cage in the zoo, trying to untangle a hoop snake.

“Hey, Goatdoc,” Eliza waved. “Can I have your pendant for the night…?”

Lensa nodded gently, and fed the disconnected hoop snake an Almond Joy bar - with the wrapper still on - before reaching into her vest’s stitched-on pockets and pulling out the pendant.

“Thanks,” Eliza said. “Are you busy tonight? I need someone to go with me, someone from staff…”

“There is only one pendant,” the goatperson said. “I believe everyone else is busy. Besides…”

Jainaba walked in from the other side of the cage. “What did I just get drafted into?”

Emily arranged her gear: the Ouija board, for one. The rest…was her phone. She didn’t have a “spirit box”, so she downloaded an app for it…she couldn’t borrow her family’s digital camera, so she was going to use her phone…

There wasn’t an app for how to explain what she wanted to happen, though. How she didn’t really care about the creepy house. How she hoped she could contact…

Sigh.

Emily zipped up her hoodie - it was thick, since it was a chilly mid-September night - and stepped outside, gear in her backpack. She walked over to the house: looked over its two stories, its dark windows, the peeling paint on its porch and the stones neatly placed all around its edges.

She stood alone on the street, and she waited.
